Abstract

The goal of this research is to conduct an empirical study on the effects of the segregation of high‐skilled workers—workers with a university degree—on cities' labour productivity. Using data for US metropolitan areas, we find evidence of a positive impact. Exploring possible mechanisms, we find that clusters of high‐skilled workers produce positive spillovers on high‐skilled workers' productivity that more than compensate for the low‐skilled workers' loss in productivity due to their exclusion. The latter is particularly valid in cities specialized in industries where the complementarity between these two kinds of workers in the city's production function is low, like technology or science. Abstract

Background: There is a need for novel treatments for neuroblastoma, despite the emergence of new biological and immune treatments, since refractory pediatric neuroblastoma is still a medical challenge. Phyto cannabinoids and their hemisynthetic derivatives have shown evidence supporting their anticancer potential. The aim of this research was to examine Phytocannabinoids or hemisynthetic cannabinoids, which reduce the SHSY-5Y, neuroblastoma cell line’s viability. Methods: Hexane and acetyl acetate extracts were produced starting with Cannabis sativa L. as raw material, then, 9-tetrahidrocannabinol, its acid counterpart and CBN were isolated. In addition, acetylated derivatives of THC and CBN were synthesized. The identification and purity of the chemicals was determined by High Performance Liquid Chromatography and 1H y 13C Magnetic Nuclear Resonance. Then, the capacity to affect the viability of SHSY-5Y, a neuroblastoma cell line, was examined using the resazurin method. Finally, to gain insight into the mechanism of action of the extracts, phytocannabinoids and acetylated derivatives on the examined cells, a caspase 3/7 determination was performed on cells exposed to these compounds. Results: The structure and purity of the isolated compounds was demonstrated. The extracts, the phytocannabinoids and their acetylated counterparts inhibited the viability of the SHSY 5Y cells, being CBN the most potent of all the tested molecules with an inhibitory concentration of 50 percent of 9.5 µM. Conclusion: Each of the evaluated molecules exhibited the capacity to activate caspases 3/7, indicating that at least in part, the cytotoxicity of the tested phytocannabinoids and their hemi-synthetic derivatives is mediated by apoptosis.

Abstract

The unstoppable adoption of cloud and fog computing is paving the way to developing innovative services, some requiring features not yet covered by either fog or cloud computing. Simultaneously, nowadays technology evolution is easing the monitoring of any kind of infrastructure, be it large or small, private or public, static or dynamic. The fog-to-cloud computing (F2C) paradigm recently came up to support foreseen and unforeseen services demands while simultaneously benefiting from the smart capacities of the edge devices. Inherited from cloud and fog computing, a challenging aspect in F2C is security provisioning. Unfortunately, security strategies employed by cloud computing require computation power not supported by devices at the edge of the network, whereas security strategies in fog are yet on their infancy. Put this way, in this paper we propose Software Defined Network (SDN)-based security management architecture based on a master/slave strategy. The proposed architecture is conceptually applied to a critical infrastructure (CI) scenario, thus analyzing the benefits F2C may bring for security provisioning in CIs.

Abstract

Differentiable digital signal processing is a technique in which signal processing algorithms are implemented as differentiable programs used in combination with deep neural networks. The advantages of this methodology include a reduction in model complexity, lower data requirements, and an inherently interpretible intermediate representation. In recent years, differentiable audio synthesizers have been applied to a variety of tasks, including voice and instrument modelling, synthesizer control, pitch estimation, source separation, and parameter estimation. Yet despite the growing popularity of such methods, the implementation of differentiable audio synthesizers remains poorly documented, and the simple formulation of many synthesizers belies their complex optimization behaviour. To address this gap, this tutorial offers an introduction to the fundamentals of differentiable synthesizer programming. The tutorial will centre around practical demonstrations, which participants can follow using an accompanying suite of Jupyter notebooks. All tutorial content will be documented in an accompanying web book, and all tutorial materials and dependencies will be fully open source and accessible for free online. Prior experience with writing Python 3 code is assumed, and a basic knowledge of PyTorch is beneficial though not strictly required. The tutorial is targeted at music and audio researchers and engineers with a grounding in the basics of digital signal processing and machine learning. Abstract

Introduction: Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is the main cause of maternal morbidity and mortality globally, but it is far more important in non‐developed countries. PPH represents 25% of all maternal deaths worldwide. Women with von Willebrand disease (VWD) and other inherited haemorrhagic disorders are at increased risk of PPH. Our aim was to establish a probable association of severe PPH in women with a history of haemostatic abnormalities. Methods: An observational, controlled study of adult women with a one or more episodes of severe PPH requiring treatment in an intensive care unit or >10 units of blood products during the 24‐hour period after diagnosis and their controls. The tests performed were blood cell count, blood group, renal, viral, liver function and haemostatic tests, fibrinogen, activity of the plasma factors and specific test to diagnose and classify VWD. Results: We included 124 women with 133 PPH events and their controls. The median age at the first event was 25.5 years old. Results were significantly different between the groups in terms of fibrinogen concentration, VWF:Ag, VWF:RCo and FVIII. A specific diagnosis was established in 69 (55.6) and 4 (3.2%) patients in the PPH group and controls, respectively. Of 61 patients with VWD, 57 had type 1, two had type 2A, and another two had type 2B. Conclusion: Our results show a relationship between PPH and inherited haemostatic disorders. VWD was the most frequent diagnosis. Appropriate and opportune diagnosis before pregnancy of inherited haemostatic disorders may be important to effectively prevent and treat PPH. Abstract

Responding to recent concerns about the reliability of the published literature in psychology and other disciplines, we formed the X-Phi Replicability Project (XRP) to estimate the reproducibility of experimental philosophy (osf.io/dvkpr). Drawing on a representative sample of 40 x-phi studies published between 2003 and 2015, we enlisted 20 research teams across 8 countries to conduct a high-quality replication of each study in order to compare the results to the original published findings. We found that x-phi studies – as represented in our sample – successfully replicated about 70% of the time. We discuss possible reasons for this relatively high replication rate in the field of experimental philosophy and offer suggestions for best research practices going forward.

247. Propuesta de creación de la Reserva Natural Municipal El Chuval en el Municipio de El Retén, Magdalena, Colombia

Abstract

Colombia se ha comprometido a nivel internacional a realizar acciones que conduzcan al país hacia el desarrollo sostenible, específicamente a proteger los recursos naturales. En línea con esta apuesta, la presente investigación propone la construcción de la Reserva Natural El Chuval, en el municipio El Retén, Magdalena. Para la construcción de dicha Reserva se realiza un diagnóstico que indica las principales características del Chuval, se identifican posibles riesgos para la conservación de sus valores ambientales, y se complementa el análisis con una propuesta de manejo que se enmarca en la metodología de Agendas Ambientales Locales desarrollada por la ONU. Pese a que el municipio es consciente de la relevancia ambiental del Chuval, aún no se han tomado decisiones definitivas para proteger esta zona, razón por la cual, la presente investigación busca llenar un vacío en el ordenamiento territorial del municipio, que fortalezca la protección de la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta.
