Search

The origin of rovibrational H_2 emission in the central galaxies of cooling flow clusters is poorly understood. Here we address this issue using data from our near-infrared spectroscopic survey of 32 of the most line luminous such systems, presented in the companion paper by Edge et al. (2002). We consider excitation by X-rays from the surrounding intracluster medium, UV radiation from young stars, and shocks. The v=1-0 K-band lines with upper levels within 10^4 K of the ground state appear to be mostly thermalised (implying gas densities above ~10^5 cm^-3), with excitation temperatures typically exceeding 2000K, as found earlier by Jaffe, Bremer and van der Werf (2001). Together with the lack of strong v=2-0 lines in the H-band, this rules out UV fluorescence. Using the CLOUDY photoionisation code, we deduce that the H_2 lines can originate in a population of dense clouds, exposed to the same hot (T~50000K) stellar continuum as the lower density gas which produces the bulk of the forbidden optical line emission in the H-alpha luminous systems. This dense gas may be in the form of self-gravitating clouds deposited directly by the cooling flow, or may instead be produced in the high-pressure zones behind strong shocks. Furthermore, the shocked gas is likely to be gravitationally unstable, so collisions between the larger clouds may lead to the formation of globular clusters., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures; to appear in MNRAS alongside Edge et al. We present a large sample of H- and K-band spectra of 32 optically line luminous central cluster galaxies. We find significant rovibrational H_2 emission in 23 of these galaxies as well as H recombination and/or [FeII] emission in another 5. This represents a fourfold increase in the number of molecular line detections known. A number of the detections are of extended emission (5-20 kpc). In several objects we find significant [SiVI] emission that appears to correlate with the strength of high ionization lines in the optical (e.g. [OIII]). This comprehensive sample builds on previous work and confirms that warm (1000-2500K) molecular hydrogen is present wherever there is ionized material in the cores of cooling flows and in most cases it also coincides with CO molecular line emission., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures; to appear in MNRAS alongside Wilman et al. The Las Campanas Observatory and Anglo--Australian Telescope Rich Cluster Survey (LARCS) is a panoramic imaging and spectroscopic survey of an X-ray luminosity-selected sample of 21 clusters of galaxies at 0.07

The X-ray galaxy cluster sample from the REFLEX Cluster Survey, which covers the X-ray brightest galaxy clusters detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey in the southern sky, is used to construct the X-ray luminosity function of clusters in the local Universe. With 452 clusters detected above an X-ray flux-limit of 3 10^(-12) erg s^(-1) cm^(-2) in 4.24 sr of the sky, this sample is the most comprehensive X-ray cluster sample with a well documented selection function, providing the best current census of the local X-ray galaxy cluster population. We present the detections of CO line emission in the central galaxy of sixteen extreme cooling flow clusters using the IRAM 30m and the JCMT 15m. These detections of CO(1-0), CO(2-1), CO(3-2) and CO(4-3) are consistent with the presence of a substantial mass of warm molecular gas (10^9-11.5Mo) within 50kpc radius of the central galaxy. We present limits on thirteen other galaxies in similarly extreme cooling flow clusters. These results are consistent with the presence of a massive starburst in the central galaxy which warms a population of cold gas clouds producing both optical and NIR emission lines and significant CO line emission. Curiously, our CO detections are restricted to the lower radio power central galaxies. These are the first detections of molecular gas in a cooling flow other than NGC1275 in the Perseus cluster. As four of our targets have firm limits on their dust mass from SCUBA and the rest have crude limits from IRAS, we can calculate gas-to-dust ratios. Simple analysis indicates that the best secondary indicatorof molecular gas is optical line luminosity. We have observed the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in a sample of five moderate-redshift clusters with the Ryle Telescope, and used them in conjunction with X-ray imaging and spectral data from ROSAT and ASCA to measure the Hubble constant. This sample was chosen with a strict X-ray flux limit using both the BCS and NORAS cluster catalogues to be well above the surface-brightness limit of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, and hence to be unbiased with respect to the orientation of the cluster. This controls the major potential systematic effect in the SZ/X-ray method of measureing H0. Taking the weighted geometric mean of the results and including the main sources of random error, namely the noise in the SZ measurement, the uncertainty in the X-ray temperatures and the unknown ellipticity of the clusters, we find H0 = 59 +8/-7 km/s/Mpc assuming a standard CDM model with Omega_M = 1.0, Omega_Lambda = 0.0, or H0 = 65 +8/-7 km/s/Mpc if Omega_M = 0.3, Omega_Lambda = 0.7., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We describe the construction of an X-ray flux-limited sample of galaxy clusters, the REFLEX survey catalogue, to be used for cosmological studies. The survey is based on the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and on extensive follow-up observations conducted in the frame of an ESO key program. In the paper we document the process by which the primary cluster candidate catalogue is constructed prior to the optical follow-up observations. We describe the reanalysis of the RASS source catalogue which enables us to impose a proper flux limit cut to the X-ray source list without introducing a severe bias against extended sources. We discuss the correlation of the X-ray and optical (COSMOS) data to find galaxy density enhancements at the RASS X-ray source positions and the further evaluation of the nature of these cluster candidates. Based also on the results of the follow-up observations we provide a statistical analysis of the completeness and contamination of the final cluster sample and show results on the cluster number counts. The final sample of identified X-ray clusters reaches a flux limit of 3e-12 erg s-1 cm-2 in the 0.1 - 2.4 keV band and comprises 452 clusters. The results imply a completeness of the REFLEX cluster sample well in excess of 90% and a contamination by non-cluster X-ray sources of less than 9%, an accuracy sufficient for the use of this cluster sample for cosmological tests., Comment: 24 pages, 31 figures, submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

We describe the design and current status of a new X-ray cluster survey aimed at the compilation of a statistically complete sample of very X-ray luminous (and thus, by inference, massive), distant clusters of galaxies. The primary goal of the MAssive Cluster Survey (MACS) is to increase the number of known massive clusters at z>0.3 from a handful to hundreds. Upon completion of the survey, the MACS cluster sample will greatly improve our ability to study quantitatively the physical and cosmological parameters driving cluster evolution at redshifts and luminosities poorly sampled by all existing surveys. To achieve these goals we apply an X-ray flux and X-ray hardness-ratio cut to select distant cluster candidates from the ROSAT Bright Source Catalogue. Starting from a list of more than 5,000 X-ray sources within the survey area of 22,735 square degrees we use positional cross-correlations with public catalogues of Galactic and extragalactic objects, reference to APM colours, visual inspection of Digitized Sky Survey images, extensive CCD imaging, and finally spectroscopic observations with the University of Hawaii's 2.2m and the Keck 10m telescopes to compile the final cluster sample. We discuss in detail the X-ray selection procedure and the resulting selection function, and present model predictions for the number of distant clusters expected to emerge from MACS. We have extracted over 400 clusters, covering more than 2 decades in mass, from three simulations of the TCDM cosmology. This represents the largest, uniform catalogue of simulated clusters ever produced. The clusters exhibit a wide variety of density-profiles. Only a minority are well-fit in their outer regions by the widely used density profile of Navarro, Frenk & White (1977). Others have steeper outer density profiles, show sharp breaks in their density profiles, or have significant substructure. If we force a fit to the NFW profile, then the best-fit concentrations decline with increasing mass, but this is driven primarily by an increase in substructure as one moves to higher masses. The measured temperature-mass relations for properties measured within a sphere enclosing a fixed overdensity all follow the self-similar form, T\propto M^{2/3}, however the normalisation is lower than in observed clusters. The temperature-mass relations for properties measured within a fixed physical radius are significantly steeper then this. We present J, H and K-band spectroscopy of Cygnus A, spanning 1.0-2.4 micron in the rest-frame and hence several rovibrational H2, H recombination and [FeII] emission lines. The lines are spatially extended by up to 6kpc from the nucleus, but their distinct kinematics indicate that the three groups (H, H2 and [FeII]) are not wholly produced in the same gas. The broadest line, [FeII]1.644, exhibits a non-gaussian profile with a broad base (FWHM=1040 km/s), perhaps due to interaction with the radio source. Extinctions to the line-emitting regions substantially exceed earlier measurements based on optical H recombination lines. Hard X-rays from the quasar nucleus are likely to dominate the excitation of the H2 emission. The results of Maloney, Hollenbach and Tielens (1996) are thus used to infer the total mass of gas in H2 v=1-0 S(1)-emitting clouds as a function of radius, for gas densities of 10^3 and 10^5 cm^-3, and stopping column densities N_H=10^22-10^24 cm^-2. Assuming azimuthal symmetry, at least 2.3E8 Msun of such material is present within 5kpc of the nucleus, if the line-emitting clouds see an unobscured quasar spectrum. Alternatively, if the bulk of the X-ray absorption to the nucleus inferred by Ueno et al. (1994) arises in a circumnuclear torus, the implied gas mass rises to 10^10 Msun. The latter plausibly accounts for 10^9 yr of mass deposition from the cluster cooling flow, for which Mdot \simeq 10 Msun/yr within this radius., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures; to appear in MNRAS

We present a low-flux extension of the X-ray selected ROSAT Brightest Cluster Sample (BCS) published in Paper I of this series. Like the original BCS and employing an identical selection procedure, the BCS extension is compiled from ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) data in the northern hemisphere (dec > 0 deg) and at high Galactic latitudes (|b| > 20 deg). It comprises 100 X-ray selected clusters of galaxies with measured redshifts z < 0.3 (as well as seven more at z > 0.3) and total fluxes between 2.8 x 10-12 erg cm-2 s-1 and 4.4 x 10-12 erg cm-2 s-1 in the 0.1-2.4 keV band (the latter value being the flux limit of the original BCS). The extension can be combined with the main sample published in 1998 to form the homogeneously selected extended BCS (eBCS), the largest and statistically best understood cluster sample to emerge from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey to date. The nominal completeness of the combined sample (defined with respect to a power law fit to the bright end of the BCS log N-log S distribution) is relatively low at 75 per cent (compared to 90 per cent for the high-flux sample of Paper I). However, just as for the original BCS, this incompleteness can be accurately quantified, and thus statistically corrected for, as a function of X-ray luminosity and redshift. In addition to its importance for improved statistical studies of the properties of clusters in the local Universe, the low-flux extension of the BCS is also intended to serve as a finding list for X-ray bright clusters in the northern hemisphere which we hope will prove useful in the preparation of cluster observations with the next generation of X-ray telescopes such as Chandra or XMM-Newton., Comment: 4 pages + 1 table, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. In this paper we use state-of-the-art N-body hydrodynamic simulations of a cosmological volume of side 100Mpc to produce many galaxy clusters simultaneously in both the standard cold dark matter (SCDM) cosmology and a cosmology with a positive cosmological constant (LCDM). We have performed simulations of the same volume both with and without the effects of radiative cooling, but in all cases neglect the effects of star formation and feedback. With radiative cooling clusters are on average five times less luminous in X-rays than the same cluster simulated without cooling. We report the discovery of highly distorted X-ray emission associated with the nearby cluster Zw1718.1-0108, one of whose dominant members is the powerful radio galaxy 3C353. This cluster has been missed by previous X-ray cluster surveys because of its low Galactic latitude (b = 19.5deg), despite its brightness in the hard X-ray band (2-10 keV flux of 1.2E-11 erg/s/cm2). Our optical CCD image of the central part of the cluster reveals many member galaxies which are dimmed substantially by heavy Galactic extinction. We have measured redshifts of three bright galaxies near the X-ray emission peak and they are all found to be around z=0.028. The ASCA GIS and ROSAT HRI images show three aligned X-ray clumps embedded in low surface-brightness X-ray emission extended by about 30 arcmin. The averaged temperature measured with ASCA is kT=4.3+/-0.2 keV, which appears to be hot for the bolometric luminosity 1.1E+44 erg/s, when compared to the temperature-luminosity correlation of galaxy clusters. The irregular X-ray morphology and evidence for a non-uniform temperature distribution suggest that the system is undergoing a merger of substructures. Since the sizes and luminosities of the individual clumps are consistent with those of galaxy groups, Zw1718.1-0108 is interpreted as an on-going merger of galaxy groups in a dark matter halo forming a cluster of galaxies and thus is in a transition phase of cluster formation., Comment: 8 pages; MNRAS in press

We are conducting a multi-wavelength (radio, optical, and X-ray) observational campaign to classify, morphologically and physically, a sample of 55 flat-spectrum radio sources dominated by structure on kpc-scales. This sample contains 22 compact-/medium-sized symmetric object candidates, a class of objects thought to be the early stages of the evolution of radio galaxies. The vast majority of the remaining objects have core-plus-one-sided-jet structures, half of which present sharply bent jets, probably due to strong interactions with the interstellar medium of the host galaxies. Once the observational campaign is completed, we will constrain evolutionary theories of radio galaxies at their intermediate stages and possibly understand the physics of the hypothesized narrow line region in active galactic nuclei, given our advantageous statistical position., Comment: 7 pages, 0 figures, conference proceedings to be published in New Astronomy Reviews

In this paper, we investigate the effect of cooling on the X-ray properties of galaxy clusters. We have performed N-body, hydrodynamical simulations both with and without the effects of radiative cooling, but neglecting the effects of star formation and feedback. We show that radiative cooling produces an inflow of high-entropy gas from the outer parts of the cluster, thus \emph{raising} the cluster temperature and \emph{decreasing} the X-ray luminosity. With radiative cooling clusters are on average three to five times less luminous in X-rays than the same cluster simulated without cooling. However, we do not produce a large constant-density core in either the gas or the dark matter distributions. Our results contradict previous work in which cooling raises the X-ray luminosity and deposits an unreasonably large amount of mass in the central cluster galaxy. We achieve this by selecting our numerical resolution in such a way that a reasonable fraction of the baryonic material cools and by decoupling the hot and cold gas in our simulations, a first step towards modelling multiphase gas. We emphasise that globally cooling a sensible amount of material is vital and the presence or absence of massive central concentrations of cold baryonic material has a dramatic effect upon the resultant X-ray properties of the clusters., Comment: 14 pages, accepted to MNRAS, substantially revised from previous version

We give a general description of the optical observing strategy of the ROSAT-ESO Flux-Limited X-ray (REFLEX) cluster survey. This presently includes 460 clusters of galaxies selected from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey in the Southern hemisphere, to a flux limit of 3 10^{-12} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2}. Redshifts are now measured for 95% of this sample. Work is in progress to complete this coverage, and then extend the sample to fainter fluxes. A few highlights on the large-scale distribution of REFLEX clusters and their clustering properties are also discussed., Comment: Latex; 12 pages with colour PS figures. We present new spectra of dominant galaxies in X-ray selected clusters, which combine with our previously published spectra to form a sample of 256 dominant galaxies in 215 clusters; 177 of these are members of the ROSAT Brightest Cluster Sample. 27% of the central dominant galaxies have emission-line spectra, all but 5 with line intensity ratios typical of cooling flow nebulae. A further 6% show only [NII] with H-alpha in absorption. We find no evidence for an increase in the frequency of line emission with X-ray luminosity. Purely X-ray selected clusters at low redshift have a higher probability of containing line emission. The more H-alpha luminous galaxies have larger emission-line regions and show a higher ratio of Balmer to forbidden line emission, although there is a continuous trend of ionization behaviour across four decades in H-alpha luminosity. Galaxies with the more luminous line emission show a significantly bluer continuum, whereas lower-luminosity and [NII]-only line emitters have continua that differ little from those of non-line emitting dominant galaxies. Values of the Balmer decrement in the more luminous systems commonly imply intrinsic reddening of E(B-V)~0.3, and when this is corrected for, the excess blue light can be characterized by a population of massive young stars, which can also provide sufficient photoionization to produce the observed H-alpha luminosity. The lower H-alpha luminosity systems show a higher ionization state and few massive stars, requiring instead the introduction of a harder source of photoionization., Comment: 50 pages with 18 postscript figures and 8 tables. We present results from ASCA and ROSAT HRI observations of the powerful radio galaxy 4C+55.16 at redshift 0.24. Extended soft X-ray emission is imaged by the ROSAT HRI. The X-ray brightness profile is sharply peaked on the radio galaxy, characteristic of a strong cooling flow. The X-ray spectrum obtained from ASCA is consistent with multi-phase intracluster gas. There is evidence for an absorbed cool component as well as ambient cluster medium in the ASCA spectrum. A spectral fit, taking a cooling-flow component into account, gives a temperature of kT=5.4(+1.4/-0.9) keV, metal abundance 0.5(+/-0.1)Zsun, excess absorption on the cool component, nH=4.9(+3.4/-1.3)E+21 cm-2, and an absorption-corrected bolometric luminosity of 2.2E+45 erg/s (H0=50km/s/Mpc, q0=0.5). The mass deposition rate is estimated to be about 1100 Msun/yr from the spectral analysis, in good agreement with that derived from imaging analysis of the ROSAT data when corrected for absorption. We tentatively identify a blue feature, seen about 15 arcsec from the centre of the radio galaxy in a published optical image, as a gravitationally-lensed arc. The inferred lensing mass is consistent with the gravitational mass derived from the X-ray data. The best-estimate of the redshift of the lensed object is 1.5(>0.7). All the observed properties suggest that the environment of 4C+55.16 is similar to known massive cooling flow clusters. We present 850-um observations with the SCUBA submillimetre (sub-mm) camera of the central galaxies in seven concentrated clusters of galaxies at redshifts between 0.19 and 0.41. We detect sub-mm emission from the central galaxies in the rich clusters A1835 and A2390, and present upper limits for the central galaxies in the remaining five clusters. The two galaxies which we detect both exhibit unusually blue UV-optical colours and lie in clusters which contain massive cooling flows, >1000 Mo/yr. Moreover, both galaxies host relatively strong radio sources. Focusing on these two systems, we present new and archival radio-optical observations to provide a detailed view of their spectral energy distributions. Our analysis indicates that sub-mm emission from the central galaxy of A1835 can be best understood as arising from dust, heated either by vigorous star formation or an obscured active galactic nucleus. For the central galaxy of A2390, the sub-mm flux is marginally consistent with an extrapolation of the centimetre-millimetre emission from the luminous radio source that lies in its core; although we cannot rule out an excess flux density from dust emission comparable to that seen in A1835. We present a 90 per cent flux-complete sample of the 201 X-ray brightest clusters of galaxies in the northern hemisphere (dec > 0 deg), at high Galactic latitudes (|b| > 20 deg), with measured redshifts z < 0.3 and fluxes higher than 4.4 x 10^(-12) erg cm^(-2) s^{-1) in the 0.1-2.4 keV band. The sample, called the ROSAT Brightest Cluster Sample (BCS), is selected from ROSAT All-Sky Survey data and is the largest X-ray selected cluster sample compiled to date. In addition to Abell clusters, which form the bulk of the sample, the BCS also contains the X-ray brightest Zwicky clusters and other clusters selected from their X-ray properties alone. Effort has been made to ensure the highest possible completeness of the sample and the smallest possible contamination by non-cluster X-ray sources. X-ray fluxes are computed using an algorithm tailored for the detection and characterization of X-ray emission from galaxy clusters. These fluxes are accurate to better than 15 per cent (mean 1 sigma error). We find the cumulative log N-log S distribution of clusters to follow a power law k S^(-alpha) with alpha=1.31 (+0.06)(-0.03) (errors are the 10th and 90th percentiles) down to fluxes of 2 x 10^(-12) erg cm^(-2) s^(-1), i.e. considerably below the BCS flux limit. Although our best-fitting slope disagrees formally with the canonical value of -1.5 for a Euclidean distribution, the BCS log N-log S distribution is consistent with a non-evolving cluster population if cosmological effects are taken into account., Comment: Table 3, listing the sample, is supplied as a separate PS file. Based on the ROSAT All-Sky Survey we have conducted a large redshift survey as an ESO key programme to identify and secure redshifts for the X-ray brightest clusters found in the southern hemisphere. We present first results for a highly controlled sample for a flux limit of 3 10-12 erg/s/cm+2 comprising 475 clusters (87% with redshifts). This is the first part of a study of the detailed X-ray properties of the cores of nearby clusters. We have used the flux-limited sample of 55 clusters of Edge et al. (1990) and archival and proprietary data from the {\it ROSAT} observatory. In this paper an X-ray spatial analysis based on the surface-brightness-deprojection technique is applied to the clusters in the sample with the aim of studying their cooling flow properties. We determine the fraction of cooling flows in this sample to be 70-90 percent and estimate the contribution of the flow region to the cluster X-ray luminosity. We show that the luminosity within a strong cooling flow can account for up to 70 percent of a cluster X-ray bolometric luminosity. Our analysis indicates that about 40 percent of the clusters in the sample have flows depositing more than 100 \Msunpyr throughout the cooling region and that these possibly have been undisturbed for many Gyr, confirming that cooling flows are the natural state of cluster cores. New cooling flows in the sample are presented and previously ambiguous ones are clarified. We have constructed a catalogue of some intracluster medium properties for the clusters in this sample. The profiles of the mass deposited from cooling flows are analyzed and evidence presented for the existence of breaks in some of the profiles. Comparison is made to recent optical and radio data. We cross-correlate our sample with the Green Bank, NVSS and FIRST surveys and to the volume-limited sample of brightest cluster galaxies presented by Lauer and Postman (1994). Although weak trends exist, no strong correlation between optical magnitude or radio power of the brightest cluster galaxy and the strength of the flow is found., Comment: 20 pages with figures included. We present a deep UBI CCD survey using the Palomar 5-m telescope of a sample of high X-ray luminosity, distant clusters selected from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. The 10 clusters lie at z=0.22-0.28, an era where evolutionary effects have been reported in the properties of cluster galaxy populations. Our clusters thus provide a well-defined sample of the most massive systems at these redshifts to quantify the extent and variability of these evolutionary effects. Moreover, by concentrating on a narrow redshift range, we can take advantage of the homogeneity of our sample to combine the catalogues from all the clusters to analyse the bulk properties of their populations. The core regions of these clusters ontain only a small proportion of star-forming galaxies, and they therefore do not exhibit a `Butcher-Oemler' effect. Focusing on the redder cluster galaxies we find that their integrated luminosity is well correlated with the cluster X-ray temperatures, and hence with cluster mass. Furthermore, the typical UV-optical colours of the elliptical sequences in the clusters exhibit a small cluster-to-cluster scatter, <=2%, indicating that these galaxies are highly homogeneous between clusters. However, at fainter magnitudes we observe an increase in the range of mid-UV colours of galaxies possessing strong 4000A breaks. In the light of the apparent decline in the S0 populations of z>=0.4 clusters (Dressler et al. 1997), and in view of the luminosities and colours of this population, we propose that they may be the progenitors of the S0 population of local rich clusters, caught in the final stage before they become completely quiescent. The topology of the observable Universe is not yet known. The most significant observational sign of a non-trivial topology would be multiple images (``ghosts'') of a single object at (in general) different sky positions and redshifts. It is pointed out that the previous search by Gott (1980) for ghost images of the Coma cluster can be extended by using highly X-ray luminous clusters of galaxies. This is likely to be more efficient than with other astrophysical objects viewable on these scales since (1) X-ray clusters would be at least as easy to identify if viewed from other angles as any other objects and (2) the X-ray emitting thermally heated gas is likely to be simpler than for other objects. Possibilities that the highly luminous cluster RXJ~1347.5-1145 ($z=0\.45$) has a ``ghost image'' at lower redshift are analysed. It is noted that RXJ~1347.5-1145, the Coma cluster and the cluster CL~09104+4109 form nearly a right angle ($\approx 88\deg$) with arms of nearly identical length ($970h^{-1}$ and $960h^{-1}$ Mpc respectively) for $\Omega_0=1, \lambda_0=0$ curvature ($h\equiv H_0/100 kms^{-1} Mpc^{-1}$). This is a clue that the three clusters could be ghost images of one and the same cluster, for a hypertoroidal topology. We present and discuss the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of the ROSAT Brightest Cluster sample (BCS), an X-ray flux limited sample of clusters of galaxies in the northern hemisphere compiled from ROSAT All-Sky Survey data. The BCS allows the local cluster XLF to be determined with unprecedented accuracy over almost three decades in X-ray luminosity and provides an important reference for searches for cluster evolution at higher redshifts. We find the significance of evolution in both the XLF amplitude and in the characteristic cluster luminosity L_X^star to be less than 1.8 sigma within the redshift range covered by our sample thereby disproving previous claims of strong evolution within z < 0.2., Comment: LaTeX using AAS style file, 1 table, 5 PostScript figures. We present the results from a detailed ASCA/ROSAT X-ray study of three distant, massive cooling flows; Zwicky 3146 (z=0.291), Abell 1835 (z=0.252) and E1455+223 (Zwicky 7160; z=0.258). Using multiphase models fitted to the ASCA spectra, we determine values for the temperature, metallicity, luminosity and cooling rates in the clusters. These results are combined with deprojection analyses of the ROSAT images to provide detailed constraints on the mass distributions in the systems, and on the properties of their cooling flows. The spectral and imaging data identify these clusters as the three most-massive cooling flows known, with mass deposition rates of ~ 1400, 2300, and 1500 solar masses per year, respectively. We highlight the need for multiphase models to consistently model the spectral and imaging X-ray data, and discuss the importance of using these models in X-ray determinations of the cluster masses. We also present results from an extensive optical study of the clusters and report the discovery of a gravitational arc in Abell 1835. The lensing data provide an indepenent constraint on the distribution of mass in the cluster, in good agreement with the results from the mutliphase (although not single-phase) X-ray analysis. We present measurements of the galaxy distributions in Abell 1835 and E1455+223 and relate these to the distributions of the total mass. The ASCA spectra place firm constraints on the column density of intrinsic X-ray absorbing material in the clusters. Abell 1835 and E1455+223 exhibit large intrinsic column densities associated with their cooling flows. These clusters also exhibit significant amounts of reddening in the optical spectra of their central galaxies. The data for Zwicky 3146 indicate lower lower levels of X-ray absorption and reddening. We present an essentially complete, all-sky, X-ray flux limited sample of 242 Abell clusters of galaxies (six of which are double) compiled from ROSAT All-Sky Survey data. Our sample is uncontaminated in the sense that systems featuring prominent X-ray point sources such as AGN or foreground stars have been removed. The sample is limited to high Galactic latitudes ($|b| \geq 20^{\circ}$), the nominal redshift range of the ACO catalogue of $z \leq 0.2$, and X-ray fluxes above $5.0 \times 10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 0.1 -- 2.4 keV band. Due to the X-ray flux limit, our sample consists, at intermediate and high redshifts, exclusively of very X-ray luminous clusters. Since the latter tend to be also optically rich, the sample is not affected by the optical selection effects and in particular not by the volume incompleteness known to be present in the Abell and ACO catalogues for richness class 0 and 1 clusters. We present the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of the ROSAT Brightest Cluster Sample (BCS), an X-ray selected, flux limited sample of 172 clusters of galaxies at $z\leq 0.3$ compiled from ROSAT All-Sky Survey data. While the bulk of the BCS consists of Abell clusters, the sample also contains Zwicky clusters and purely X-ray selected systems. The BCS-XLF represents the best determination of the local X-ray luminosity function for galaxy clusters and thus provides an important reference for evolutionary studies. For the BCS itself, we find no convincing evidence for cluster evolution within a redshift of $z=0.3$. We present the analysis of pointed ROSAT PSPC observations of five of the most luminous, intermediate redshift ($0.1 < z < 0.15$) clusters of galaxies detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. The PSPC data are combined with optical CCD images and spectra to examine the relationship between clusters and their central cluster galaxies (CCGs). Abell 1068, Abell 1361 and Abell 1664 contain three of the most optically line-luminous CCGs known. The PSPC X-ray data show that these galaxies lie at the centres of massive (200 -- 400 solar masses per year) cooling flows. The alignment between CCGs and their host clusters has been investigated. For those clusters with cooling flows, the position angles of the X-ray emission from the clusters and the optical emission from the CCGs agrees within 5 degrees. For the one probable non-cooling flow cluster in the sample, Abell 2208, the alignment is significantly poorer. We examine the evidence for intrinsic X-ray absorption in the clusters. The X-ray spectra for Abell 1068 and Abell 1664 show that the cooling flows in these clusters are intrinsically absorbed by equivalent hydrogen column densities $\geq 10^{21} atom cm$^{-2}$. The optical spectra of the CCGs in these clusters exhibit substantial intrinsic reddening, at levels consistent with the X-ray absorption results if standard dust to gas ratios are assumed., Comment: MNRAS accepted. 15 pages compressed, uuencoded postscript including figures and tables.

We report the discovery with the Keck telescope of two new multiply-imaged arcs in the luminous X-ray cluster A2219 ($z=0.225$). The brighter arc in the field is red and we use spectroscopic and photometric information to identify it as a $z \sim 1$ moderately star-forming system. The brightness of this arc implies that it is formed from two merging images of the background source, and we identify possible candidates for the third image of this source. The second giant arc in this cluster is blue, and while fainter than the red arc it has a similarly large angular extent (32 arcsec). This arc comprises three images of a single nucleated source -- the relative parities of the three images are discernible in our best resolution images. The presence of several bright multiply imaged arcs in a single cluster allows detailed modelling of the cluster mass distribution, especially when redshift information is available. We present a lensing model of the cluster which explains the properties of the various arcs, and we contrast this model with the optical and X-ray information available on the cluster. We uncover significant differences between the distributions of mass and X-ray gas in the cluster. We suggest that such discrepancies may indicate an on-going merger event in the cluster core, possibly associated with a group around the second brightest cluster member. We report the serendipitous discovery of a giant grvitational arc in the Abell Supplementary cluster S295 during optical follow-up observations of clusters detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. The cluster has a redshift z=0.3007 and a velocity dispersion of about 900 km/sec. Using a non-parametric procedure developed by Kaiser \& Squires (1993), we analyse the statistical image distortions of faint field galaxies to $I\ls25.5$ in two distant X-ray luminous clusters 1455+22 ($z_{cl}=0.26$) and 0016+16 ($z_{cl}=0.55$) to derive two dimensional projected mass distributions for the clusters. The mass maps of 1455+22 and 0016+16 are presented at effective resolutions of 135 kpc and 200 kpc respectively (for $H_o$=50 kms sec$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, $q_o=0.5$) with a mean signal to noise per resolution element of 17 and 14. We compare our 2-D mass distributions on scales up to $\sim$1 Mpc with those defined by the spatial distribution of colour-selected cluster members and from deep high resolution X-ray images of the hot intracluster gas. Despite the different cluster morphologies, one being cD-dominated and the other not, in both cases the form of the mass distribution derived from the lensing signal is strikingly similar to that traced by both the cluster galaxies and the hot X-ray gas. We find some evidence for a greater central concentration of dark matter with respect to the galaxies.
