220. Performing Arabic at the learned societies of Beirut, 1846–1869

Abstract

This dissertation focuses on the learned societies of Beirut and studies the emergence of the Arabic language as a topic of discourse in the early Nahḍa period. Through the lens of language performance theory and standard language ideology, it traces the revival of an Arabic Standard Language Ideology during the middle decades of the nineteenth-century in Beirut. Based on textual analysis of society lectures and previously unused sources, this study proposes a new reading of the learned societies of Beirut and presents a nuanced account of Arabic usage amid the local emerging elite. The study first describes the approach taken toward Arabic at Majma‘ al-Tahdhīb (the Refinement Assembly, est. 1846). It then focuses on speeches delivered at al- Jam‘iyya al-Sūriyya li-’ktisāb al-‘Ulūm wa-l-Funūn (the Syrian Society of Arts and Sciences, est. 1847) and the position of the society amid a quasi-global network of oriental societies. Next, it highlights the concerted effort of local Beiruti Arabs in the 1850s to re-purpose the esoteric genre of taqrīẓ (poetic endorsement) and to promote classical Arabic poetry through publications funded by al-‘Umda al-Adabiyya li-Ishhār al-Kutub al-‘Arabiyya (the Literary Association for Publicizing Arabic Books, est. 1858). The dissertation concludes by analyzing highly-stylized, eloquent speeches, and odes performed at al-Jam‘iyya al-‘Ilmiyya al-Sūriyya (the Syrian Learned Society, est. 1868). Looking at these five learned-society projects in Beirut that ran from 1846 to 1869, I outline how the burgeoning Beiruti elite positioned Classical Arabic (al- ‘Arabiyya) as the language standard for their nineteenth-century reading of tamaddun (civilization). I suggest that they customized the tradition of Arabic language performance to redefine performative spaces and the new media of print. This essay also investigates the role of social networks in the region and with the global community of orientalists in advancing al-‘Arabiyya as the appropriate language standard. The conclusions prompt a revisiting of the narrative on language simplification during the early Nahḍa in Beirut, in light of the interests of local elites and orientalists in promoting a classicized, idealized Arabic language

Abstract

Aims Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) has improved diagnostic and management strategies in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) by expanding our appreciation for the diverse phenotypic expression. We sought to characterize the prevalence and clinical significance of a recently identified accessory left ventricular (LV) muscle bundle extending from the apex to the basal septum or anterior wall (i.e. apical-basal). Methods and results CMR was performed in 230 genotyped HCM patients (48 ± 15 years, 69% male), 30 genotype-positive/phenotype-negative (G+/P−) family members (32 ± 15 years, 30% male), and 126 controls. Left ventricular apical-basal muscle bundle was identified in 145 of 230 (63%) HCM patients, 18 of 30 (60%) G+/P− family members, and 12 of 126 (10%) controls (G+/P− vs. controls; P < 0.01). In HCM patients, the prevalence of an apical-basal muscle bundle was similar among those with disease-causing sarcomere mutations compared with patients without mutation (64 vs. 62%; P = 0.88). The presence of an LV apical-basal muscle bundle was not associated with LV outflow tract obstruction (P = 0.61). In follow-up, 33 patients underwent surgical myectomy of whom 22 (67%) were identified to have an accessory LV apical-basal muscle bundle, which was resected in all patients. Conclusion Apical-basal muscle bundles are a unique myocardial structure commonly present in HCM patients as well as in G+/P− family members and may represent an additional morphologic marker for HCM diagnosis in genotype-positive status

Abstract

The Crown's failures over disclosure, in serious cases, have served to highlight concerns over the public funding of the defence in criminal cases. July saw the publication of an urgent short report by the Justice Select Committee 1 and August a highly critical High Court judgment quashing government attempts to reduce funding in paper-heavy cases. 2 Yet the High Court judgment is a procedural victory for the Law Society that says nothing about the underlying cost-cutting issue and the report of the Select Committee, though full of useful information, has recommendations that are bland. The recommendation which matters is that there should be a full and thereafter regular review of the funding arrangements. 3 The Lord Chancellor has been promising the initial review for some time, but it has not taken place. The professions must set about preparing a fully researched bid for a new and better resourced funding method at both crime "lower" 4 and Crown Court level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A renewed interest in trace elements (TE), as micronutrients as well as potentially toxic elements, and new options for multi-element analysis has led to an increased number of scientists engaging in TE studies. Accreditation, certification and quality control of TE analyses often applies only to the last step in the sample chain when prepared samples are sent to the laboratory for digestion/extraction and subsequent analysis. However, all stages of the chain from initial sampling to final analysis require an understanding of the specific challenges involved in TE studies and an awareness of the contamination risks as well as approaches to limit these. Contamination can potentially be introduced during all stages of handling and preparation of plant samples, e.g. through dust and the materials that make up the different work surfaces, tools and containers used. Milling devices originally used during preparation of two sets of archived herbage samples were tested to indicate the degree of contamination that can arise from milling. For example, some of the milling devices tested showed effects on several TE concentrations while also increasing the variability between samples. A titanium knife mill which was included for comparison gave the best results, showing no measurable contamination by TE of primary interest, while it allowed a high throughput of samples. To enhance the quality of data on TE in bulky plant material such as herbage and to ensure future usability of newly archived samples, we suggest that field handbooks and sample preparation protocols (where needed) are revised to include precautions against TE contamination in all handling steps. This will ensure reliable data on concentrations of micronutrients and potential toxic TE in plant material.

Abstract

Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) can present with altered brain structure and deficits in cognitive function similar to aging. Yet, the interaction between age-related brain changes and brain development in MDD remains understudied. In a cohort of adolescents and adults with and without MDD, we assessed brain aging differences and associations through a newly developed tool quantifying normative neurodevelopmental trajectories.
