Accurate estimation of state-of-charge and state-of-health is extremely important for the lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles. First, this article proposes an online parameter identification method based on joint forgetting factor recursive least squares-adaptive extended Kalman filter and calculate state-of-charge by adaptive extended Kalman filter in real time. Through simulation tests, the minimum error of this method is 0.45 %, which verifies its high accuracy. Then an improved firefly algorithm solved the particle dilution problem is combined with particle filter to estimate state-of-health for the first time. Compared with particle filter, the estimation accuracy of improved firefly algorithm optimized particle filter is better in the experiment, its estimated error is as low as 0.79 % and predicted cycles is consistent with the failure cycles in test. In addition, the convergence of the algorithm is verified by the experiment.

Despite 40 years of control efforts, onchocerciasis (river blindness) remains one of the most important neglected tropical diseases, with 17 million people affected. The etiological agent, Onchocerca volvulus, is a filarial nematode with a complex lifecycle involving several distinct stages in the definitive host and blackfly vector. The challenges of obtaining sufficient material have prevented high-throughput studies and the development of novel strategies for disease control and diagnosis. Here, we utilize the closest relative of O. volvulus, the bovine parasite Onchocerca ochengi, to compare stage-specific proteomes and host-parasite interactions within the secretome. We identified a total of 4260 unique O. ochengiproteins from adult males and females, infective larvae, intrauterine microfilariae, and fluid from intradermal nodules. In addition, 135 proteins were detected from the obligate Wolbachiasymbiont. Observed protein families that were enriched in all whole body extracts relative to the complete search database included immunoglobulin-domain proteins, whereas redox and detoxification enzymes and proteins involved in intracellular transport displayed stage-specific overrepresentation. Unexpectedly, the larval stages exhibited enrichment for several mitochondrial-related protein families, including members of peptidase family M16 and proteins which mediate mitochondrial fission and fusion. Quantification of proteins across the lifecycle using the Hi-3 approach supported these qualitative analyses. In nodule fluid, we identified 94 O. ochengisecreted proteins, including homologs of transforming growth factor-β and a second member of a novel 6-ShK toxin domain family, which was originally described from a model filarial nematode (Litomosoides sigmodontis). Strikingly, the 498 bovine proteins identified in nodule fluid were strongly dominated by antimicrobial proteins, especially cathelicidins. This first high-throughput analysis of an Onchocercaspp. proteome across the lifecycle highlights its profound complexity and emphasizes the extremely close relationship between O. ochengiand O. volvulus. The insights presented here provide new candidates for vaccine development, drug targeting and diagnostic biomarkers.

Podoconiosis and leprosy are Neglected Tropical Diseases associated with low quality of life, social stigma and isolation of affected people and families. Despite the substantial social burden it imposes, podoconiosis has largely been ignored in the global health literature until recently unlike leprosy. This study assessed and compared the quality of life and social impact of podoconiosis with that of leprosy among affected households and neighborhoods in North West Cameroon.

The development of the human filaria Loa loa(Dirofilariinae, Onchocercidae), previously studied in monkeys, was studied using the non permissive hosts-mice and jirds. The development proved to be rapid: moult 3 occurred on day J8 post-inoculation, the adult stage was reached on day 25 and measured at that time 3-3.5 mm in length. As in the other filarioids, the female genital apparatus developed during the fourth stage.

The availability of a safe macrofilaricidal drug would help to accelerate onchocerciasis elimination. A trial was conducted in Cameroon to evaluate the effects of a subcutaneous injectable long-acting formulation of ivermectin (LAFI) on the microfilariae (mf) and adult stages of Onchocerca ochengi. Ten zebu cattle naturally infected with the parasite were injected subcutaneously with either 500 mg (group A, N= 4), or 1000 mg long-acting ivermectin (group B, N= 4) or the vehicle (group C, N= 2). Skin samples were collected from each animal before, and 6, 12, and 24 months after treatment to measure microfilarial densities (MFDs). Nodules excised before, and 6 and 12 months after treatment were examined histologically to assess the adult worms’ viability and reproductive status. Blood samples were collected at pre-determined time-points to obtain pharmacokinetic data. Before treatment, the average O. ochengiMFDs were similar in the three groups. Six months after treatment, all animals in groups A and B were free of skin mf, whereas those in group C still showed high MFDs (mean = 324.5 mf/g). Only one ivermectin-treated animal (belonging to group A) had skin mf 12 months after treatment (0.9 mf/g). At 24 months, another animal in group A showed skin mf (10.0 mf/g). The histologic examination of nodules at 6 and 12 months showed that LAFI was not macrofilaricidal but had a strong effect on embryogenesis. The new LAFI regimen might be an additional tool to accelerate the elimination of human onchocerciasis in specific settings.

A new cationic polythiophene derivative poly[3‐(1,1′‐dimethyl‐4‐piperidinemethylene)thiophene‐2,5‐diyl chloride] (PDPMT‐Cl) is synthesized and applied as a colorimetric and fluorometric probe for the detection of iodide ion and anionic surfactants with high selectivity and sensitivity. Upon adding iodide ion or anionic surfactant into the aqueous solution of PDPMT‐Cl, the maximum absorption of the polymer is blue‐shifted with a naked‐eye color change from red‐violet to yellow, signifying that iodide ion or anionic surfactants can cause the dissociation of PDPMT‐Cl aggregates. More sensitive results are obtained in the fluorometric detection to iodide ion or anionic surfactant, thereinto, the detection limit to surfactants can be extended to the order of 10−9M.

Des données entomologiques de base ont été recueillies dans les villages de Zinga et Boali-Chutes, en République Centrafricaine (RCA) en prévision de l’évaluation de l’impact à long terme du traitement par l’ivermectine sous directives communautaires (TIDC). Les déterminations morphologiques révèlent que les simulies capturées dans les deux sites appartiennent au sous-groupe Sou/Sq. À Boali, la nuisance était assez élevée avec une moyenne de 243 piqûres/homme/jour, le taux de parturité moyen de 61,6% et le potentiel annuel de transmission (PAT) brut de 8259 larves infectantes d’onchocerques par homme et par an. En outre, le nombre moyen de larves infectantes pour 1000 pares était de 177. À Zinga, on notait une moyenne de 191 piqûres/ homme/jour, un taux de parturité moyen de 51,6% et un PAT brut de 3422; quant au nombre moyen de larves infectantes pour 1000 pares, il était de 86. En conclusion, les capacités vectrices et les indices entomologiques enregistrés sont caractéristiques de zones à forte transmission onchocerquienne. Reste que certaines des larves infectantes récoltées peuvent être d’origine animale, d’où la nécessité de leur identification pour situer le niveau réel de la transmission.

The possibility of concomitant immunity and its potential mechanisms in Onchocerca volvulus infection were examined by analyzing cytokine and antibody responses to infective larval (third-stage larvae [L3] and molting L3 [mL3]), adult female worm (F-OvAg), and skin microfilaria (Smf) antigens in infected individuals in a region of hyperendemicity in Cameroon as a function of age. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell interleukin 5 (IL-5) responses to F-OvAg and Smf declined significantly with age (equivalent to years of exposure to O. volvulus). In contrast, IL-5 secretion in response to L3 and mL3 remained elevated with increasing age. Gamma interferon responses to L3, mL3, and F-OvAg were low or suppressed and unrelated to age, except for responses to Smf in older subjects. IL-10 levels were uniformly elevated, regardless of age, in response to L3, mL3, and F-OvAg but not to Smf, for which levels declined with age. A total of 49 to 60% of subjects had granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor responses to all O. volvulus antigens unrelated to age. Analysis of levels of stage-specific immunoglobulin G3 (IgG3) and IgE revealed a striking, age-dependent dissociation between antibody responses to larval antigens (L3 and a recombinant L3-specific protein, O. volvulus ALT-1) which were significantly increased or maintained with age and antibody responses to F-OvAg, which decreased. Levels of IgG1 to L3 and F-OvAg were elevated regardless of age, and levels of IgG4 increased significantly with age, although not to O. volvulus ALT-1, which may have unique L3-specific epitopes. Immunofluorescence staining of whole larvae showed that total anti-L3 immunoglobulin levels also increased with the age of the serum donor. The separate and distinct cytokine and antibody responses to adult and infective larval stages of O. volvulus which are age related are consistent with the acquisition of concomitant immunity in infected individuals.

ABSTRACTThis paper reports on the role played by the indigenous fruit tree species, Dacryodes edulis(safou), in four communities in Southern Cameroon. Safou is originally a forest species but has now almost completed the shift on to the farm, where it is particularly planted in association with cocoa and coffee plantations. Its oil-rich fruit are an important item in local diets and are widely marketed. The income is particularly important to women and its timing coincides with the need to pay school fees and associated costs. The reasons why different farmers plant safou are very complex and change over time. Extension services could help farmers obtain greater benefits from this resource by promoting participatory domestication and providing advice on tree management and fruit storage and processing.

α″-Fe16N2 thin films have been prepared by facing-target sputtering. Their structures, magnetic properties and thermal stability were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). It was found that the saturation magnetization (Ms) of α″-Fe16N2 decreases with increasing temperature, and at about 523 K, a sudden change was observed, which can be attributed to the decomposition of α″-Fe16N2 into α-Fe and γ′-Fe4N.

ABSTRACTAntigen-specific interleukin-5 (IL-5), gamma interferon (IFN-γ), and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) responses in individuals living in an area of hyperendemicity for onchocerciasis in Cameroon were examined. In both the PI and the INF, Th2 responses against all the antigens tested were dominant. However, in the PI group as a whole, there was an enhanced Th2 response against the larval antigens and the adult male and adult female antigens, and a Th1 response in a subgroup of the PI (27 to 54.5%) against L3, mL3, and M-OvAg antigens was present. While the PI produced significantly higher levels of GM-CSF against L3, mL3, and M-OvAg antigens than the INF, there was no difference in the GM-CSF responses of the groups against the other antigens. The present study indicated that, in comparison to the INF, the PI have distinct larva-specific and adult male-specific cytokine responses, thus supporting the premise that immunological studies of the PI would lead to the identification of immune mechanisms and the target genes that play a role in protective immunity.

In North Cameroon, the vector of Onchocerca volvulus (causative agent of human onchocerciasis) also transmits 2 filariae of animals: O. ochengi from cattle and O. ramachandrini from wart hogs. In order to assess the qualitative and quantitative roles of these ‘animal filariae’ in the epidemiology of O. volvulus, the transmission of the 3 parasites was measured in 2 villages and related to the endemicity of human onchocerciasis. In Galim, a cattle-farming Guinea savanna village where wild animals are rare, the overwhelming majority of all filarial infections found in the Simulium damnosum s.l. vectors throughout the year were O. ochengi (89%). The remaining infections were mainly O. volvulus (10·5%), and a few O. ramachandrini (0·5%). In Karna, a crop-farming Sudan savanna village where cattle are rare, but wild animals common, flies were also more frequently infected with animal filariae than with the human parasite. In the dry season, when nomadic cattle are present, 54% of all infections were O. ochengi, 36% O. volvulus and 10% O. ramachindrini. In the rainy season, when the cattle move away, flies were mainly infected with O. ramachandrini (52% of all infections) and secondly with O. volvulus (48%). In Karna, the relationship between the Annual Transmission Potential (ATP) of O. volvulus and its prevalence in the human population conformed to other onchocerciasis foci, in that a moderate ATP led to hyperendemic onchocerciasis. In Galim, however, a 7-fold higher O. volvulus-ATP (caused by a very high biting rate of the flies) contrasted with a strikingly low endemicity of onchocerciasis. Since, at the same time, in Galim the transmission of O. ochengi (measured on man) was very high (15000 L3/fly collector/year), we hypothesize that the reduced endemicity of onchocerciasis in Galim is due to ‘natural heterologous vaccination’ by the large annual number of O. ochengi-L3, inoculated into man by anthropo-boophilic S. damnosum s.l. The importance of micro-epidemiology for the understanding of the interlinkage of human and animal onchocerciasis is discussed.

A total of 230 water buffaloes were sampled for the determination of the epidemiological situation of Babesia orientalisinfection in Hubei Province, using the latex agglutination test. This serological test revealed that 74.7% of the collected sera were positive for antibodies against B. orientalisin endemic areas. In contrast, only 1.79% of water buffaloes were positive in non-epidemic areas. The incidence of the infection was substantially higher in older than in younger animals. The results were analysed using mathematical model and indicated that these areas were in a stable situation.

Objective. This study examined the prevalence of thinness, overweight, and obesity in Cameroon children ranging from 8 to 15 years old using several published references as evaluation tools. Methods. A stratified sample was used with eleven schools randomly selected, and data from 2689 children (52.2% girls) ranging from 8 to 15 years were analyzed. Weight and height were recorded and BMI was calculated. BMI cutoffs used to define nutritional status grades included two international and three national published indices which were compared to our database-derived cutoffs. Results. A prevalence of 9.5% thinness and 12.4% overweight including 1.9% obesity according to international references was detected. A 2.2% low-weight-for-age, 5.7% low-height-for-age, and 5.2% low-weight-for-height were identified. Overall, there were significant differences using calculations based on our database versus published reference values and between boys versus girls. Conclusions. This study demonstrates that prevalence of thinness, overweight, and obesity is similar to that of other leading-emerging countries reported within the last decade, yet it is still lower than prevalence in developed countries. Ethnic background and social environment have impact on prevalences, highlighting the importance of evaluating the Cameroon population based on locally derived database.

Cordia platythyrsaBaker is known for its medicinal value. This paper deals with a phytochemical investigation of this species, from which cordioxime (1), a new dioxime γ-lactam has been isolated. Its structure was determined by comprehensive analyses of its 1H and 13C NMR, COSY, HMQC, and HMBC spectroscopic, and HREIMS data. The remaining two known compounds were identified as β-sitosterol, and β-sitosterol glucopyranoside.
