Abstract

The thermoacoustic response of carbon nanotube (CNT) thin films at frequencies ranging from 300 Hz up to 100 kHz has been studied in a variety of gaseous mediums. Theoretical derivations show that the sound pressure generated by CNT thin films is approximately proportional to the inverse of the heat capacity of the gas within the audible frequency range of human hearing, which is consistent with the experimental results in argon, air, and helium. For large size CNT films, a decrease in sound pressure is observed within a higher frequency range in air, which is attributed to the destructive interference of sound waves in the near field zone according to the theoretical calculations. Abstract

Simultaneous decoration of the flux line positions at opposite sides of single-crystal Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO) high-Tc superconductors by the Bitter technique enables the reduction of finite electrical resistance. The primary problem in the application of high-Tc copper oxide superconductors is the movement of the magnetic flux lines such as vortice wanderings, which produce finite electric resistance. The simultaneous decoration quantifies vortice wandering as the lines pass through BSCCO materials. This pins the flux lines to the crystal lattice, reducing the electrical resistance of the material.

228. Hard Carbon Nanotube Sponges for Highly Efficient Cooling viaMoisture Absorption–Desorption Process

Abstract

Heat dissipation is a serious limitation for increasingly miniaturized and functionalized electronics, resulting in the continuous need for developing highly efficient cooling methods. Here, utilizing the strong van der Waals force between super-aligned carbon nanotubes (SACNTs), a self-supported three-dimensional (3D) CNT/CaCl2radiator with a more outstanding cooling performance than Al cooling fins was designed. Unlike the soft CNT sponges, these 3D structures could sustain a high pressure of 4.5 MPa with a small compression of 10% and thus are defined as hard CNT sponges. Hard CNT sponges show a 44.3% higher cooling efficiency than commercial Al cooling fins at a humidity of 50% due to the massive latent heat of water combining with the high thermal conductivity of CNTs and the high emissivity of the composites. The self-adjusting moisture absorption–desorption process could dissipate heat by water evaporation when electronics work at high power and spontaneously absorb moisture to regenerate the sponges at the standby mode of electronics. Besides, hard CNT sponges possess a much lower density (0.98–1.70 g cm–3) than aluminum (2.7 g cm–3). This high-performance cooler provides an alternative thermal management method for electronics.

231. Efficient Fabrication of Carbon Nanotube Micro Tip Arrays by Tailoring Cross-Stacked Carbon Nanotube Sheets

Abstract

Carbon nanotube (CNT) micro tip arrays with hairpin structures on patterned silicon wafers were efficiently fabricated by tailoring the cross-stacked CNT sheet with laser. A blade-like structure was formed at the laser-cut edges of the CNT sheet. CNT field emitters, pulled out from the end of the hairpin by an adhesive tape, can provide 150 μA intrinsic emission currents with low beam noise. The nice field emission is ascribed to the Joule-heating-induced desorption of the emitter surface by the hairpin structure, the high temperature annealing effect, and the surface morphology. The CNT emitters with hairpin structures will greatly promote the applications of CNTs in vacuum electronic devices and hold the promises to be used as the hot tips for thermochemical nanolithography. More CNT-based structures and devices can be fabricated on a large scale by this versatile method.

Abstract

Despite many efforts to fabricate high-aspect-ratio atomic force microscopy (HAR-AFM) probes for high-fidelity, high-resolution topographical imaging of three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured surfaces, current HAR probes still suffer from unsatisfactory performance, low wear-resistivity, and extravagant prices. The primary objective of this work is to demonstrate a novel design of a high-resolution (HR) HAR AFM probe, which is fabricated through a reliable, cost-efficient benchtop process to precisely implant a single ultrasharp metallic nanowire on a standard AFM cantilever probe. The force-displacement curve indicated that the HAR-HR probe is robust against buckling and bending up to 150 nN. The probes were tested on polymer trenches, showing a much better image fidelity when compared with standard silicon tips. The lateral resolution, when scanning a rough metal thin film and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SW-CNTs), was found to be better than 8 nm. Finally, stable imaging quality in tapping mode was demonstrated for at least 15 continuous scans indicating high resistance to wear. These results demonstrate a reliable benchtop fabrication technique toward metallic HAR-HR AFM probes with performance parallel or exceeding that of commercial HAR probes, yet at a fraction of their cost.

Abstract

The synthesis of massive arrays of monodispersed carbon nanotubes that are self-oriented on patterned porous silicon and plain silicon substrates is reported. The approach involves chemical vapor deposition, catalytic particle size control by substrate design, nanotube positioning by patterning, and nanotube self-assembly for orientation. The mechanisms of nanotube growth and self-orientation are elucidated. The well-ordered nanotubes can be used as electron field emission arrays. Scaling up of the synthesis process should be entirely compatible with the existing semiconductor processes, and should allow the development of nanotube devices integrated into silicon technology., Growing organized carbon nanotubes on large-scale surfaces is important for obtaining scaled-up functional devices for use as scanning probes and sensors (1-5), as field emitters (6-11), and in nanoelectronics (12).
