Abstract

The article presents tips on music playing from several music teachers. Piano Pedagogue Frances Clark advices musicians to have as much opportunities they can have in playing in front of the public as having sufficient public performance in a year would be able to help in reducing the frightening experience among student musicians. Concert Pianist and pedagogue Leopold Godowsky stated that weight, relaxation and economy of motion are among the key elements of technique or interpretation and mechanism in piano playing. Concert pianist Leon Fleisher believes that it is advisable to take a progressive approach in learning by focusing on elements like rhythm or harmonic structures first.

Abstract

The article highlights the Queen Elisabeth Competition, an event for pianists in Brussels that started in 1937. Several famous pianists including Leon Fleisher, Maria Tipo, and Philippe Entremont, are honorees of this competition. The competition in the year 1999 have attracted 207 applicants, 155 of whom are participants. Eighteen-year old Alexander Moutouzkine of Russia, have impressed the audience with his wonderful performance. Several award winners who were eliminated in the first round included Filipo Gamba, a finalist at the Van Cliburn in 1997, and Luiza Borac, prize winner of the 1998 Gina Bachauer Competition. Vitaly Samoshko, the most experienced among the 12 finalist, got the first prize. Alexander Ghindin, a Russian, got the second prize.

''IT'S hard to believe, isn't it?'' the pianist Leon Fleisher said during a recent discussion about the impending Carnegie Hall debut recital of his former student Jonathan Biss. It is indeed difficult to think of Mr. Biss, whose concert is on Friday evening, as a debutant of any sort. At 30, he has been active in New York's musical life for more than a decade as recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber player. His reputation as an eloquent interpreter with a powerful technique has been underscored by recordings for EMI Classics and Wigmore Hall Live, and his elegant writing about music, both on his blog and on other music sites, has established him as one of his generation's most serious musical thinkers.
