Background: Although inhibitors of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system can slow the progression of diabetic kidney disease, the residual risk is high. Whether nuclear 1 factor (erythroid-derived 2)–related factor 2 activators further reduce this risk is unknown. Methods: We randomly assigned 2185 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and stage 4 chronic kidney disease (estimated glomerular filtration rate [GFR], 15 to < 30 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 of body-surface area) to bardoxolone methyl, at a daily dose of 20 mg, or placebo. The primary composite outcome was end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or death from cardiovascular causes. Results: The sponsor and the steering committee terminated the trial on the recommendation of the independent data and safety monitoring committee; the median follow-up was 9 months. A total of 69 of 1088 patients (6%) randomly assigned to bardoxolone methyl and 69 of 1097 (6%) randomly assigned to placebo had a primary composite outcome (hazard ratio in the bardoxolone methyl group vs. the placebo group, 0.98; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.70 to 1.37; P=0.92). In the bardoxolone methyl group, ESRD developed in 43 patients, and 27 patients died from cardiovascular causes; in the placebo group, ESRD developed in 51 patients, and 19 patients died from cardiovascular causes. A total of 96 patients in the bardoxolone methyl group were hospitalized for heart failure or died from heart failure, as compared with 55 in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.32 to 2.55; P < 0.001). Estimated GFR, blood pressure, and the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio increased significantly and body weight decreased significantly in the bardoxolone methyl group, as compared with the placebo group. Conclusions: Among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and stage 4 chronic kidney disease, bardoxolone methyl did not reduce the risk of ESRD or death from cardiovascular causes. Comumente, as ferramentas são desenvolvidas em diferentes momentos, por equipes diferentes e sem que haja preocupação com integração. Como resultado, as organizações têm que lidar com problemas de integração para permitir a devida comunicação entre as ferramentas e apoiar o processo de medição de software. Um fator chave para a integração de aplicações é garantir que elas compartilhem um entendimento comum do significado dos termos e serviços trocados. Em outras palavras, é importante que haja integração não só no nível sintático das aplicações, mas também no nível semântico. Entre os instrumentos utilizados para atribuição de semântica, as ontologias são reconhecidas como um importante meio para apoiar a integração semântica de aplicações. Elas podem ser usadas como uma interlíngua a fim de mapear os conceitos e serviços usados pelas diferentes aplicações. Considerando esse cenário, este trabalho explora a utilização de ontologias de domínio e de tarefa de medição de software na integração de ferramentas para apoiar o processo de medição de software. Para isso, é proposta uma abordagem baseada em objetivos para o levantamento de requisitos para integração de ferramentas de apoio à medição de software. Para avaliar a abordagem proposta, ela foi utilizada para integrar ferramentas visando apoiar o processo de medição de software em uma organização de desenvolvimento de software real.

"Gentes y Gentecillas" (1 ), novela de Carlos Luis Fallas, presenta como escenario una zona de trabajo situada en la region atlantica de Costa Rica. En esa hacienda, en Pejibaye, se desarrollanin los sucesos que comprenden la mayor parte de las acciones de la novela y ahi estara presente el trajinar cotidiano, en una pintura ambiental de Ia region que veni establecer una hacienda para el cultivo del cafe. Vemos en el libro la vida saturada por pequeiios acontecimientos de los que llegan a trabajar en Pejibaye, los unicos moradores de esa zona. Pero no todo sucede en ese poblado, en la parte segunda de la novela el autor nos traslada a otra zona de trabajo situada tambien en la misma region. En un cerro situado en la Milla 48 se realiza un trabajo de excavacion.

The nearby BL Lacertae (BL Lac) object Markarian~421 (Mkn~421) at a red shift z=0.031 was observed to undergo strong TeV Gamma-ray outbursts in the observational periods from December 1999 until May 2001. The time averaged energy spectrum is well described by a power law with an exponential cut-off energy at 3.6(+0.4-0.3)_{stat}(+0.9-0.8)_{sys} TeV. The energy spectra derived for different average flux levels ranging from 0.5 to 10 * 10^{-11}ph/cm**2/s follow a clear correlation of photon index and flux level. Generally, the energy spectra are harder for high flux levels. From January to April 2001 Mkn~421 showed rapid variability (doubling time as short as 20 minutes), accompanied with a spectral hardening with increasing flux level within individual nights. For two successive nights (MJD 51989-51991, March 21-23,2001), this correlation of spectral hardness and change in flux has been observed within a few hours. The cut-off energy for the Mkn~421 TeV spectrum remains within the errors constant for the different flux levels and differs by 2.6+/-0.6_stat+/-0.6_sys TeV from the value determined for Mkn~501. This indicates that the observed exponential cut-off in the energy spectrum of Mkn~421 is not solely caused by absorption of multi-TeV photons by pair-production processes with photons of the extragalactic near/mid infrared background radiation., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Astronomy&Astrophysics

International audience; Most of the EU member states along the Northeast Atlantic coastline have developed different fish-based indices to assess the ecological status of transitional waters due to the Water Framework Directive. To be valid, each method should show a good correlation with a gradient of human pressures. In order to define a comparable view of what should be “good ecological status”, we performed an intercalibration of seven fish-based indices according to a common pressure index. Anthropogenic pressures were assessed by expert knowledge and best available pressure data. Nearly 170 estuaries from Portugal to Germany and Northern Ireland, where fish data existed, were qualified with 15 candidate pressure indicators. Only the indicators that showed a good regression to the biological assessment were selected. A set of 8 indicators assessing habitat degradation, contamination and dissolved oxygen composed the final common pressure index. The biological response is expressed as an Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR: score ranging between 0 and 1) divided into five quality classes. However, the seven methods differ regarding the boundary setting between these classes. Linear regressions were used to show the correlation between the common pressure index and the EQR obtained for each estuary. All the seven fish-based indices displayed a significant pressure-response relationship. A harmonisation band for the class boundaries was defined using the bias to the median value for all methods obtained on the common pressure index scale. A multi-rater Kappa analysis controlled the agreements between all methods in the attribution of a quality class. All methods showed significant trend in EQR values decrease with an increasing pressure value. All methods were able to discriminate between good or better and moderate or worst status. This intercalibration process enabled the comparison of EQR values despite very different ecological assessment strategies, monitoring regime and type of estuary.

En el presente trabajo describimos la síntesis y caracterización del nuevo complejo acuosoluble [Ru(Cl)2(DMSO)2(PySO3Na)2] donde [PySO3Na] es el ligando piridina p-sulfonato de sodio. Este complejo fue sintetizado por adición lenta del ligando a una solución metanólica del complejo cis-[Ru(Cl)2(DMSO)4] bajo reflujo y atmósfera inerte. Este nuevo complejo fue caracterizado utilizando las técnicas de FT-IR y RMNH1. El nuevo complejo mostró ser activo en la reacción catalitica de hidroformilación de 1-hexeno, sin embargo, no resultó ser muy activo en una prueba preliminar de hidroformilación catalítica con nafta real en medio bifásico. También se llevó a cabo la optimización de parámetros como tiempo, temperatura, presión y relación sustrato/catalizador usando 1-hexeno como sustrato. El sistema mostró pérdida de actividad durante las pruebas de reuso del catalizador, sin embargo mostró actividad en presencia de tiofeno y de mercurio metálico. Temperature, pressure, and substrate/catalyst ratio were studied with 1-hexene substrate. Catalysis with metallic particles was tested with a mercury drop trial giving negative results. The reuse of the aqueous phase in several reactions under the same experimental conditions showed loss of catalytic activity after the second reuse. In this work, we describe the synthesis and characterization of a new water soluble [RhCl(CO)(PySO3Na)2], complex (1); where [PySO3Na] is the sodium salt of p-sulfonated pyridine ligand. Complex (1) was obtained in methanol, reacting the dried sodium salt of p-sulfonated pyridine ligand with [Rh(Cl)(CO)2]2 complex under inert atmosphere. Complex (1) was characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR techniques. Complex (1) was active in the catalytic hydroformylation of 1-hexene and real naphtha in a biphasic (water/toluene) system. The effects of reaction time, temperature and syngas pressure were studied with 1-hexene as a substrate. Formation of metallic particles was tested with a mercury drop trial, giving negative results. Reuse of the aqueous phase for several times under the same conditions showed little catalytic activity loss. Flight activity of foragers of four colonies of Plebeia remota (Holmberg, 1903) was registered from December 1998 to December 1999, using an automated system (photocells and PLC system). The colonies originated from two different regions: Cunha, state of São Paulo, and Prudentópolis, state of Paraná, Brazil. Flight activity was influenced by different climatic factors in each season. In the summer, the intensity of the correlations between flight activity and climatic factors was smaller than in the other seasons. During the autumn and winter, solar radiation was the factor that most influenced flight activity, while in the spring, this activity was influenced mainly by temperature. Except in the summer, the various climatic factors similarly influenced flight activity of all of the colonies. Flight activity was not affected by geographic origin of the colonies. Information concerning seasonal differences in flight activity of P. remota will be useful for prediction of geographic distribution scenarios under climatic changes.

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) aims at achieving good ecological status (GES) for surface water bodies throughout Europe, by 2015. Consequently European countries are currently developing and intercalibrating methods based on biological, hydromorphological and physico-chemical quality elements for the assessment of their transitional waters, including fishes. The present work focuses on the response of fish indicators and indices to anthropogenic pressures and natural factors. For doing that, datasets from the Basque and Portuguese estuaries, in the North East Atlantic, have been used. Hence, biological data from fish (and in some cases, crustaceans), together with different types of pressure (population, industry, ports, dredging, global pressures, pollution, channeling, etc.) and hydromorphological data (flow, estuary volume, depth, intertidal surface, residence time, etc.) have been analyzed. Together with fish assemblages composition and individual metrics (richness, trophic composition, etc.), two fish indices (Basque AFI and Portuguese EFAI) have been investigated. Additionally, the response of five fish indices (AFI, EFAI, ELFI, TFCI, Z-EBI) were tested on a common dataset, within Portuguese estuaries, to check the time lag in the metrics’ response to different human pressures and the variability in the strength of responses to those pressures. This work also focuses on the sensitivity analysis of two European fish-based indices (French ELFI and British TFCI) to changes in their respective metric scores through their observed dynamic range. Sensitivity analyses were run simulating different scenarios of metric score changes, taking into consideration the relationship between metrics. This allowed the metrics with stronger influence in the index score and the resulting water body classification to be highlighted. Importantly, the identification of the most influential metrics could help to guide management efforts in terms of achieving GES by 2015. In general, the fish metrics and indices tested responded to anthropogenic pressures in the Atlantic estuarine sites, yet at the individual metrics level environmental chemical quality was the main driver for observed differences. Also, some metrics did not respond to pressures as expected, which is most likely related to sampling gear efficiency, namely the low capture efficiency of diadromous species with beam trawl. The cause-effect relationship study emphasized that fish-based indices developed to assess the water quality of estuarine systems did not detect all the pressures with the same sensitivity in terms of strength and time-lag, and gave more importance to some pressures, namely chemical pollution. The fish-based indices developed to assess the water quality of estuarine systems do not allow the individualization of pressure effects, which may constitute a problem to put forward the correct specific measures for management and rehabilitation of estuaries. On the other hand, some indices also do not seem relevant, in a short time, to detect changes of the ecological quality which may constitute a handicap for management or an indication for their restructuring. The sensitivity analysis indicates that a number of estuarine resident taxa, a number of estuarine-dependent marine taxa, a number of benthic invertebrate feeding taxa and a number of piscivorous taxa have the greatest influence on the TFCI classification. For the French index ELFI, the most influential metrics are mainly DT (total density) and DB (density of benthic species), followed by RT (total richness). These results suggest a high sensitivity of the quality indication provided by these indices on richness related aspects of the fish assemblages. Management should therefore prioritize efforts to conserve or restore estuarine attributes underpinning abundance and ecological diversity, for example the diversity of fish habitats, food resources and shelter or the hydrological integration between coastal and transitional waters.

However, it was possible to calculate most of the indices on most of the available data, thus showing their relative adaptability. The indication of extreme values for quality (high or bad) was rare and the results of the indices often differed. This shows that the assessment of quality using fish indicators is extremely dependent on the assessment tool, the sampling gear used and the type of transitional water body. Despite this, some common patterns in the diagnostics could be found hence requiring a possible intercalibration of the tested indices.

International audience; Multi-metric indices are widely used in water quality assessments since they often provide integrative and more holistic perspectives. Fish-based indices have been proposed worldwide, especially in Europe due to the implementation of Water Framework Directive (WFD). It is expected that these indices and their respective metrics reflect human pressures and may be useful recognising specific measures for management and rehabilitation. However, in the paste few years a wide diversity of indices have been proposed, which have considerable differences in what concerns their ability to evaluate cause-effects relationships between the state of fish assemblages and human pressures. In the present study we evaluate the strength of cause-effect relationships based on ecological census and published literature of the fish-based indices that have been proposed in the context of WFD. For each index, their metrics were evaluated and scored in what regards their sensitiveness to several human pressures and the expected time-lag in their respective response. Most of the metrics are influenced by several human pressures, being difficult to identify cause-effect relationships. For the majority of the indices the metrics used to evaluate certain pressures are expected to give indications in a medium or long-term basis, which clearly collides with the assessment and management schedule commitments in the scope of WFD.

RuCl2(DMSO)2(NC5H4CO2Na-3)2 is very soluble in the ionic liquid (IL) 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [(BMIM)BF4]. The complex was prepared by reacting RuCl2(DMSO)4 with NC5H4CO2Na-3, sodium nicotinate, in toluene, and was characterized by spectroscopic methods. The complex catalyzes the hydrogenation of 1-hexene (600 psi H2, 100 C) in a two-phase system consisting of cyclohexane/[(BMIM)BF4] with 75% conversion in 24 h and modest substrate isomerization. Fish sampling was carried out using several gears in 2009 and 2010. The objectives were twofold: (i) to test the adaptability of fish indices to different gears and different types of transitional waters; and (ii) to compare the behaviour of the indices with regard to their level of agreement. Five out of the six tested indices were gear-specific and all were specific to some type(s) of transitional waters and have particular data needs. Therefore calculating the indices on a common dataset raised many difficulties, especially regarding the determination of appropriate reference condition values. However, taking some reasonable assumptions it was possible to calculate most of the indices on the majority of the available data, thus showing their relative adaptability. The indication of extreme values for quality (high or bad) was relatively rare and the results of the indices often differed: when used outside of their initial framework, geographical limits or with different sampling methods, fish indices' results are highly uncertain. This shows that the assessment of quality using fish indicators highly depends on the assessment tool, the sampling methodology and the type of transitional water. Despite these results, some statistically significant correlations between pairs of indices' results were found, indicating the possibility of intercalibration between some of the tested indices. This work corresponds to the first step of WISER WP4.4 Deliverable 2. In a second step, some fish metrics in the indices tested here will be selected for a more in depth study: the effect of several natural sources of variability on these metrics will be studied and uncertainty will be quantified along the assessment process, from the sampling to final EQS formulation using WiserBugs software.

The complex was characterized by FT-IR, MS, 1H and 13C NMR and showed catalytic activity for olefin hydroformylation (1-hexene, cyclohexene and 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene as model olefins; 600 psi synthesis gas (pCO/pH2 = 1); 100 C; 24 h; toluene). Apresenta-se um caso clínico referente a doente de 35 anos, do sexo masculino sem antecedentes pessoais relevantes, admitido no serviço de urgência por quadro de toracalgia e tosse produtiva com alterações electrocardiográficas sugestivas de pericardite. Inicialmente admitido pelo Serviço de Cardiologia, com melhoria do quadro clínico após terapêutica anti- -inflamatória; contudo, no internamento houve como intercorrência pneumonia de provável etiologia bacteriana, complicada por derrame pleural. Após a alta,foi referenciado à consulta de pneumologia, onde se manteve o estudo etiológico do derrame persistente, tendo vindo a complicar-se o seu quadro com alterações das cavidades cardíacas e múltiplos nódulos pulmonares, sugestivos de endocardite subaguda com embolização séptica pulmonar. Internado no serviço de Pneumologia e submetido a videotoracoscopia, foi-lhe diagnosticado angiossarcoma cardíaco com metastização pulmonar. Assistiu-se a uma rápida evolução do quadro clínico, quase fulminante, com falência cardíaca e óbito do doente sem ter iniciado radioterapia ou quimioterapia adjuvante.

O notável incremento, verificado nas últimas décadas, nas demandas sociais sobre o ambiente e sobre os recursos naturais, bem como as significativas mudanças na produção e transmissão do conhecimento científico e tecnológico tornaram inadiável a realização de amplo diagnóstico sobre a formação dos geólogos nas universidades brasileiras. A formação dos geólogos nas universidades brasileiras assim como o ensino nos cursos de Graduação em Geologia no Brasil tornaram necessários para formação de geólogos para o mercado de trabalho. Finalmente, As diretrizes Curriculares para cursos de Graduação em Geologia e Engenharia Geológica, os conteúdos pedagógicos são fundamentais para o delineamento do perfil do egresso.

Fish has been recently recognized as a suitable vertebrate model and represents a promising alternative to mammals for studying mechanisms of tissue mineralization and unravelling specific questions related to vertebrate bone formation. The recently developed Sparus aurata (gilthead seabream) osteoblast-like cell line VSa16 was used to construct a cDNA subtractive library aimed at the identification of genes associated with fish tissue mineralization. Suppression subtractive hybridization, combined with mirror orientation selection, identified 194 cDNA clones representing 20 different genes up-regulated during the mineralization of the VSa16 extracellular matrix. One of these genes accounted for 69% of the total number of clones obtained and was later identified as theS. aurata osteopontin-like gene. The 2138-bp full-length S. aurata osteopontin-like cDNA was shown to encode a 374 amino-acid protein containing domains and motifs characteristic of osteopontins, such as an integrin receptor-binding RGD motif, a negatively charged domain and numerous post-translational modifications (e.g. phosphorylations and glycosylations). The common origin of mammalian osteopontin and fish osteopontin-like proteins was indicated through an in silico analysis of available sequences showing similar gene and protein structures and was further demonstrated by their specific expression in mineralized tissues and cell cultures. Accordingly, and given its proven association with mineral formation and its characteristic protein domains, we propose that the fish osteopontin-like protein may play a role in hard tissue mineralization, in a manner similar to osteopontin in higher vertebrates.

O aumento do número de casos da infecção pelo VIH traduz a importância de reflectir sobre a complexidade e dimensão que esta problemática ocupa no contexto social actual, na sua vertente bio-psico-social. Neste sentido, afigurou-se pertinente partilhar a experiência e reflexões de uma equipa de enfermagem de um serviço de Medicina, que diariamente cuida de pessoas infectadas/afectadas pelo VIH/SIDA. O presente artigo pretende assim traduzir a reflexão acerca de algumas das preocupações, dificuldades e expectativas desta equipa de enfermagem, relativamente à sua prática, assim como reflectir sobre a integração dos doentes infectados pelo VIH na comunidade e nos serviços de saúde em geral.

Flight activity of Melipona bicolor bicolor, coming from Cunha (23º05'S, 44º55'W), Atlantic Forest, was studied in ten colonies, and in two periods: from July to September 1993 and from August to September 1995. The colonies were grouped in weak, medium and strong, according to the diameter of the combs, which can provide a good idea of the number of cells built. 855 observations were accomplished for 5 minutes, every half-hour, from 8 to 18 hours. The total number of bees that entered and left the hive and the number of bees that arrived with mud, pollen and resin, besides the number that went out with debris in that period were counted. It was also registered the temperature and the relative humidity of the air. The total external activity, as well as pollen collection, was maximum in the first hours of the morning, mainly in strong colonies. Weak colonies moved their maximum activity approximately to 12 hours. Pollen collection declined gradually, while mud and resin collection rose; removal of debris was greater in the beginning of the morning and in the end of the afternoon. Flight activity increased as relative humidity of the air rose, being optimum for strong colonies in the range between 80%-89%, and for the weakest colonies between 70%-79%. The minimum temperature observed for exit of the bees was 11ºC, with optimum temperatures ranging between 17ºC and 22ºC. The results showed that the general state of the colony influences the different strategies of food collection and that these bees should be adapted to environments of high relative humidity as the Atlantic forest. A atividade de vôo de Melipona bicolor bicolor, proveniente de Cunha (23º05'S, 44º55'W), Mata Atlântica, foi estudada em dez colônias, em dois períodos: de julho a setembro de 1993 e de agosto a setembro de 1995. As colônias foram agrupadas em fracas, médias e fortes, segundo o diâmetro dos favos de cria, que pode fornecer uma idéia do número de células de cria construídas. Foram realizadas 855 observações durante 5 minutos, a cada meia hora, das 8 às 18 horas, quando era contado o número total de abelhas que entravam e saíam, o número de abelhas que chegava com barro, pólen e resina, além do número que saía com detritos das colméias naquele período. Foram também registradas a temperatura e a umidade relativa do ar. A atividade externa total, assim como a coleta de pólen, foi máxima nas primeiras horas da manhã, principalmente nas colônias fortes. Colônias fracas deslocaram a atividade máxima para as 12 horas, aproximadamente. A coleta de pólen declinou gradualmente, enquanto a coleta de barro e de resina se elevou; a eliminação de detritos foi maior no início da manhã e no final da tarde. A atividade de vôo esteve positivamente correlacionada com a umidade relativa do ar, sendo ótima para colônias fortes na faixa entre 80%-89% de umidade relativa, e para as mais fracas entre 70%-79%. Quanto à temperatura, o limite mínimo observado para saída das abelhas foi de 11°C; com temperaturas ótimas entre 17°C e 22°C. Os resultados evidenciam que o estado geral da colônia influencia as diferentes estratégias de coleta de alimento, e que essas abelhas devem estar adaptadas a ambientes de alta umidade relativa como a Mata Atlântica.

Using air showers induced by TeV gamma-rays from Mrk 501, the radial distribution of Cherenkov light is investigated. The shower geometry is reconstructed from the stereoscopic shower images obtained with the telescopes of the HEGRA IACT system. The time profiles of Cherenkov images of cosmic-ray showers and of gamma-ray showers are investigated, using data gathered with the HEGRA system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes during the 1997 outbursts of Mrk 501. Photon arrival times are shown to vary across the shower images. The dominant feature is a time gradient along the major axis of the images. The gradient varies with the distance between the telescope and the shower core, and is maximal for large distances. The time profiles of cosmic-ray showers and of gamma-ray showers differ in a characteristic fashion. The main features of the time profiles can be understood in terms of simple geometrical models.
