Previous modelling and observational studies have shown discrepancies in the interannual relationship of winter surface air temperature (SAT) between Arctic and East Asia, stimulating the debate about whether Arctic change can influence midlatitude climate. This study uses two sets of coordinated experiments (EXP1 and EXP2) from six different atmospheric general circulation models. Both EXP1 and EXP2 consist of 130 ensemble members, each of which in EXP1 (EXP2) was forced by the same observed daily varying sea ice and daily varying (daily climatological) sea surface temperature (SST) for 1982–2014 but with different atmospheric initial conditions. Large spread exists among ensemble members in simulating the Arctic–East Asian SAT relationship. Only a fraction of ensemble members can reproduce the observed deep Arctic warming–cold continent pattern which extends from surface to upper troposphere, implying the important role of atmospheric internal variability. The mechanisms of deep Arctic warming and shallow Arctic warming are further distinguished. Arctic warming aloft is caused primarily by poleward moisture transport, which in conjunction with the surface warming coupled with sea ice melting constitutes the surface-amplified deep Arctic warming throughout the troposphere. These processes associated with the deep Arctic warming may be related to the forcing of remote SST when there is favorable atmospheric circulation such as Rossby wave train propagating from the North Atlantic into the Arctic. The Arctic is of fundamental importance in the climate system because of the key atmospheric and oceanic feedbacks that occur here. Added to this, global warming has caused intense changes in Arctic climate, with a rise in temperatures during recent decades that is close to twice that of other regions. These rapid changes are a challenge to communities already at risk from many other aspects that have to do with society as whole, in particular with regard to economic and political factors, as well as climatic effects. Loss of sea ice is particularly relevant, with a direct and immediate effect on Arctic communities, in the form of potential increased shipping (and attendant risks) as well as the complex issues involved in Arctic oil and gas exploration, together with effects on fisheries and marine mammals. The ARCPATH project addresses these issues by focusing on changes that will happen in the near future, with the overarching goal of fostering responsible and sustainable development. As well as considering specific aspects of climate and sea-ice changes, the project will focus on socio-economic changes in specific coastal communities in Iceland, Greenland and northern Norway. The project thus needs to take into account both natural and social science perspectives. ARCPATH will focus on knowledge gaps in: 1) improving Arctic climate prediction by reducing uncertainties originating from changes in sea ice and the ocean; 2) increasing understanding and reducing uncertainties regarding how changes in climate interact with many factors relating to local communities, including the development of local and international adaptation measures; and 3) supplying this knowledge as potential pathways to action through innovative adaptation plans for responsible development. Based on the long-term reanalysis datasets and the multivariate copula method, this study reveals that the frequency of summer hot drought events (SHDEs) over northeastern China (NEC) shows interdecadal variations during 1925–2010. It is revealed that the summer sea surface temperature (SST) over the North Atlantic has a significant positive correlation with the frequency of SHDEs over NEC on the decadal time scale, indicating a potential influence of the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO). Further analyses indicate that during the positive phases of the AMO, the warming SST over the North Atlantic can trigger a stationary Rossby wave originating from the North Atlantic, which splits into two wave trains propagating along two different routes. One is a zonally orientated wave train that resembles the Silk Road pattern, whereas the other is an arching wave train that resembles the polar–Eurasian pattern. A negative (positive) phase of the Silk Road pattern (polar–Eurasian pattern) may result in the weakened westerly wind along the jet stream, the downward vertical motion, and the anomalous positive geopotential center over NEC, providing favorable conditions for precipitation deficiency and high temperature and resulting in increased SHDEs. Thus, the Silk Road pattern and the polar–Eurasian pattern serve as linkages between the AMO and SHDEs over northeastern China in summer on the interdecadal time scale. Model simulations from CAM4 perturbed with warmer SST in the North Atlantic show precipitation deficiency and high temperature conditions over northeastern China in summer, supporting the potential impacts of the North Atlantic SST on SHDEs over northeastern China. Early studies have suggested a linkage between the surface warming over the Barents-Kara Seas and the strength of the Siberian high in boreal winter. Here, we show that the linkage is not stable, and with an apparent interdecadal change in the late-1990s. Coinciding with Arctic surface warm anomalies in recent decades (1997–2017), the Siberian high has been significantly intensified, the East Asian jet stream has expanded westward, and an apparent Rossby wave has propagated from the Arctic to East Asia, suggesting an atmospheric teleconnection between midlatitudes and Arctic. In contrast, midlatitude atmospheric circulation anomalies coinciding with Arctic surface warm anomalies were barely statistically significant during 1979–1996. The associated strong anomalous ascending/descending motions and divergent/convergent upper troposphere air masses over the Arctic-Eurasian sector seem to have favored the midlatitude-Arctic linkage during 1997–2017. We further hypothesize that Arctic mid-tropospheric warming plays a crucial role for the linkage between midlatitudes and Arctic in boreal winter. Multi-model simulations support this, and also point to internal atmospheric variability as the cause for the interdecadal shift in the strength of the midlatitude-Arctic linkage. This study reveals an intensified influence of December Arctic Oscillation (AO) on the subsequent January surface air temperature (SAT) over Eurasia and North Africa in recent decades. The connection is statistically insignificant during 1957/58-1979/80 (P1), which becomes statistically significant during 1989/90-2011/12 (P2). The possible causes are further investigated. Associated with positive December AO during P2, significant anomalous anticyclone emerges over the central North Atlantic, which is accompanied with significant westerly and easterly anomalies along 45°−65°N and 20°−40°N, respectively. This favors the significant influence of December AO on the subsequent January SAT and atmospheric circulation over Eurasia and North Africa via triggering the North Atlantic tripole sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly that persists into the subsequent January. By contrast, the December AO-related anomalous anticyclone during P1 is weak and is characterized by two separate centers located in the eastern and western North Atlantic. Correspondingly, the westerly and easterly anomalies over the North Atlantic Ocean are weak and the-related tripole SST anomaly is not well formed, unfavorable for the persistent impact of the December AO into the subsequent January. Further analyses indicate that the different anomalous anticyclone associated with the December AO over the North Atlantic may be induced by the strengthened synoptic-scale eddy feedbacks over the North Atlantic, which may be related to the interdecadal intensification of the storm track activity. Additionally, the planetary stationary wave related to the December AO propagates from surface into upper stratosphere at mid-latitudes during P2, which further propagates downward to the troposphere and causes anomalous atmospheric circulation in the subsequent January. A number of observational and modeling studies have shown a co-relationship between higher than normal sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the North Atlantic and increased summer precipitation over India. However, discrepancies among the models make the robustness of the results debatable. This study examines the connections between the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) and the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) in 66 “Historical” runs of 22 coupled models that were part of the fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). Diverse results are obtained, and correlation coefficients between the AMO and ISM range from − 0.39 to 0.66. Only 10 out of 66 members (~ 15%) show a positive correlation statistically significant at the 90% level (> 0.42), close to the observation (0.5). The models with positive AMO-ISM correlations show an AMO-related atmospheric teleconnection that involves an extratropical-tropical SST gradient in the North Pacific, as well as a more regional temperature difference between the Indian subcontinent and the tropical Indian Ocean. In comparison, the models with negative correlations fail to capture these teleconnections. Moreover, the models with higher climatological precipitation over the tropical Atlantic and warmer climatological SST in the tropical Atlantic and the North Pacific relative to multi-member ensemble, as well as a weak westerly jet, perform better at reproducing the observed teleconnections. The simulated responses of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) to volcanic forcings are controversial, and some mechanisms of these responses are not clear. We investigate the impacts of volcanic forcing on the ENSO using a long-term simulation covering 1400-1999 as simulated by the Bergen Climate Model (BCM) and a group of simulations performed with the Community Atmosphere Model version 4.0 (CAM4) and the BCM’s ocean component Miami Isopycanic Coordinated Ocean Model (MICOM). The analysis of the long-term BCM simulation indicates that ENSO has a negative-positive-negative response to strong tropical volcanic eruptions (SVEs), which corresponds to the different stages of volcanic forcing. In the initial forcing stage, a brief and weak La Niña-like response is caused by the cooling along the west coast of the South American continent and associated enhancement of the trade winds. In the peak forcing stage, westerly wind anomalies are excited by both reduced east-west sea level pressure gradients and weakened and equatorward shifted tropical convergence zones. These westerly wind anomalies extend to the equatorial eastern Pacific, leading to an El Niño-like response. At the same time, easterly wind anomalies west of 120°E and strong cooling effects can promote a discharged thermocline state and excite an upwelling Kelvin wave in the western Pacific. In the declining forcing stage, forced by the recovered trade winds, the upwelling Kelvin wave propagates eastward and reaches the equatorial eastern Pacific. Through the Bjerknes feedback, a strong and temporally extended La Niña-like response forms. Additional CAM4 simulations suggest a more important role of the surface cooling over the Maritime Continent and surrounding ocean in shaping the westerly wind anomalies over the equatorial central-eastern Pacific and the easterly wind anomalies west of 120° E, which are key to causing the El Niño-like responses and subsequent La Niña-like responses, respectively. The MICOM sensitivity simulations confirm that SVE-induced tropical atmospheric circulation anomalies play a dominant role in regulating post-eruption ENSO evolution in the observation, while the influences of anomalous buoyance forcing (heat and freshwater fluxes) are secondary. Therefore, SVEs play an important role in modulating the ENSO evolution. Compared with proxy data, the simulated El Niño-like responses and subsequent La Niña-like responses are consistent with the reconstructed ENSO responses to SVEs. However, the simulated initial brief La Niña-like response, which is reproduced by most models, is seen in only one proxy dataset and is absent in most of the reconstructed ENSOs and those observed. ERα (estrogen receptor alpha) exerts nuclear genomic actions and membrane-initiated non-genomic effects. The mutation of aspartic acid into alanine in vitro revealed the critical role of aspartic acid 258 (corresponding to mouse amino acid site 262) of ERα for non-nuclear function. Our previous in vitro study revealed that this mutation blocked estrogen's non-genomic effects on vascular endothelial H2S release. Here, we studied the in vivo role of the aspartic acid 262 of ERα in the reproductive system and in the vascular tissue. We generated a mouse model harboring a point mutation of the murine counterpart of this aspartic acid into alanine (ERαD262A). Our results showed that the ERαD262A females are fertile with standard hormonal serum levels, but the uterine development and responded with estrogen and follicular development are disrupted. In line with our previous study, we found that the rapid dilation of the aorta was abrogated in ERαD262A mice. In contrast to the previously reported R264-ERα mice, the classical estrogen genomic effector SP1/NOS3/AP1 and the nongenomic effectors p-eNOs, p-AKT, and p-ERK were disturbed in the ERαD262A aorta. Besides, the serum H2S concentration was decreased in ERαD262A mice. Together, ERαD262A mice showed compromised both genomic and non-genomic actions in response to E2. These data showed that aspartic acid 262 of ERα are important for both genomic and non-genomic effects of E2. Our data provide a theoretical basis for further selecting an effective non-genomic mouse model and provide a new direction for developing estrogen non-genomic effect inhibitors. Global ocean hindcast simulations for the period 1871–2009 have been run with the ocean-sea ice component of the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM-O), forced by an adjusted version of the Twentieth Century Reanalysis version 2 data set (20CRv2 data set), as well as by the commonly used second version of atmospheric forcing data set for the Coordinated Ocean-ice Reference Experiments phase-II (CORE-II) for the period 1948–2007 (hereafter CORE.v2 data set). The simulated Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) in the 20CR and the CORE simulations have comparable variability as well as mean strength during the last three decades of the integration. The simulated AMOC undergoes, however, distinctly different evolutions during the period 1948–1970, with a sharply declining strength in CORE but a gradual increase in 20CR. Sensitivity experiments suggest that differences in the wind forcing between CORE and 20CR have major impact on the simulated AMOCs during this period. It is furthermore found that differences in the air temperature between the two data sets do contribute to the differences in AMOC, but to a much lesser degree than the wind. An additional factor for the diverging AMOC in the two decades following 1948 is the inevitable switching of atmospheric forcing fields in 1948 in the CORE.v2-based runs due to the cyclic spin-up procedure of the ocean model. The latter is a fundamental issue for any ocean hindcast simulation. The ocean initial state mainly influence the actual value but to a lesser degree also the temporal evolution (variability) of AMOC. It may take about two decades for the AMOC to adjust to a new atmospheric state during the spin-up, although a dynamically balanced ocean initial state tends to reduce the adjustment time and the magnitude of the deviation, implying that an ocean model run with atmospheric forcing fields extending back in time, like 20CRv2, can be used to extend the reliable duration of CORE-type of simulations. Despite the fact that the Arctic Oscillation (AO) has reached a more neutral state and a global-warming hiatus has occurred in winter since the late 1990s, the Arctic sea ice cover (ASIC) still shows a pronounced decrease. This study reveals a close connection ( R = 0.5) between the extratropical sea surface temperature (ET-SST) and ASIC in winter from 1994 to 2013. In response to one positive (negative) unit of deviation in the ET-SST pattern, the ASIC decreases (increases) in the Barents-Kara Seas and Hudson Bay (the Baffin Bay and Bering Sea) by 100-400 km2. This relationship might be maintained because of the impact of warming extratropical oceans on the polar vortex. Positive SST anomalies in the midlatitudes of the North Pacific and Atlantic (around 40°N) strengthen the equatorward planetary wave propagation, whereas negative SST anomalies in the high latitudes weaken the upward planetary wave propagation from the lower troposphere to the stratosphere. The former indicates a strengthening of the poleward meridional eddy momentum flux, and the latter implies a weakening of the poleward eddy heat flux, which favors an intensified upper-level polar night jet and a colder polar vortex, implying a stronger-than-normal polar vortex. Consequently, an anomalous cyclone emerges over the eastern Arctic, limiting or encouraging the ASIC by modulating the mean meridional heat flux. In this paper, the authors use NCEP reanalysis and 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) data to document the strengthened relationship between the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) and winter Arctic Oscillation (AO) on the interannual time scale with a comparison of 1950-70 and 1983-2012. Their connection was statistically insignificant during 1950-70, whereas it was statistically significant during 1983-2012. The latter significant connection might be attributed to the East Asian jet stream (EAJS) upstream extension: the EAJS signal is relatively confined to the western North Pacific before the 1970s, whereas it extends westward toward East Asia after the 1980s. This upstream extension leads to the rearrangement of eastward-propagating Rossby waves with a much wider horizontal structure, thereby bonding the EAWM and the AO. Furthermore, the authors present observational evidence and model simulations demonstrating that the reduction of autumn Arctic sea ice cover (ASIC) is responsible for the strengthened EAWM-AO relationship after the 1980s by producing the EAJS upstream extension. After the 1980s, a strong anticyclonic anomaly over the polar ocean and anomalous easterly advection over northern Eurasia are generated by the near-surface heating over the Barents-Kara (B-K) Seas caused by the reduction of ASIC. This further induces cold anomalies over northern Eurasia, altering the meridional temperature gradient between the midlatitude and tropical region and consequently leading to westward penetration of the EAJS. The winter extreme precipitation over South China (SC) experiences a large year‐to‐year variability, causing uncertainty in its prediction. Here, we find that the boreal winter sea ice concentration (SIC) in the Okhotsk Sea can serve as a precursor to the following winter's extreme precipitation frequency (EPF) over SC, which has important implications for its prediction. Further analysis reveals that the Okhotsk Sea SIC anomalies help to reinforce North Pacific Oscillation‐like atmospheric variability over the North Pacific, which induces the development of El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO)‐like SST anomalies in the equatorial eastern Pacific. The ENSO may act as a "power amplifier" to boost the impact of the Okhotsk Sea winter SIC anomalies on the following winter EPF over SC via a positive atmosphere–ocean feedback process. Our findings suggest that the Okhotsk Sea SIC may act as a potential precursor for the winter EPF over SC leading by about 1 year, and further improve our understanding of extratropical‐tropical interactions and aid predictability of winter extreme precipitation over SC. We investigate the uncertainty (i.e., inter-model spread) in future projections of the boreal winter climate, based on the forced response of ten models from the CMIP5 following the RCP8.5 scenario. The uncertainty in the forced response of sea level pressure (SLP) is large in the North Pacific, the North Atlantic, and the Arctic. A major part of these uncertainties (31%) is marked by a pattern with a center in the northeastern Pacific and a dipole over the northeastern Atlantic that we label as the Pacific–Atlantic SLP uncertainty pattern (PA∆SLP). The PA∆SLP is associated with distinct global sea surface temperature (SST) and Arctic sea ice cover (SIC) perturbation patterns. To better understand the nature of the PA∆SLP, these SST and SIC perturbation patterns are prescribed in experiments with two atmospheric models (AGCMs): CAM4 and IFS. The AGCM responses suggest that the SST uncertainty contributes to the North Pacific SLP uncertainty in CMIP5 models, through tropical–midlatitude interactions and a forced Rossby wavetrain. The North Atlantic SLP uncertainty in CMIP5 models is better explained by the combined effect of SST and SIC uncertainties, partly related to a Rossby wavetrain from the Pacific and air-sea interaction over the North Atlantic. Major discrepancies between the CMIP5 and AGCM forced responses over northern high-latitudes and continental regions are indicative of uncertainties arising from the AGCMs. We analyze the possible dynamic mechanisms of these responses, and discuss the limitations of this work. Instrumental records since the mid-1990s show that the correlation between the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) becomes non-significant or even negative. This seems to disagree with that the AMO is positively correlated with the ISM illustrated by most of previous studies, and implies an unstable connection between AMO and ISM. Given the limitation of the length of instrumental records and the substantial human impacts, what causes this instability, specially whether it originates from natural variability in climate system, is unclear. Here the pre-industrial and historical simulations from a Community Earth System Model Large Ensemble (CESM-LE) project are used to investigate this issue. The results suggest that the AMO–ISM connection variability is predominated by internal climatic processes, and an unstable connection occurs in the 1800-year pre-industrial simulation, which is positive in some decades but negative or neutral in some other decades. A regression analysis based on the selected decades when the AMO–ISM connection is positive and when it is negative suggests the substantial role of natural SST variability in the subtropical western North Pacific in modulating the linkage of the AMO with the ISM. The warm SST anomalies lead to higher pressure and easterly anomalies over the western subtropical Pacific, and then a convergence over South Asia and subsequently more precipitation in India, thus a significant positive AMO–ISM correlation; opposite anomalies are true for the significant negative correlation periods. This study provides a new insight into the AMO–ISM connection, in that the connection itself is unstable in the natural climate system and subjective to the modulation of subtropical western North Pacific SST. The extreme Arctic sea ice minima in the twenty-first century have been attributed to multiple factors, such as anomalous atmospheric circulation, excess solar radiation absorbed by open ocean, and thinning sea ice in a warming world. Most likely it is the combination of these factors that drives the extreme sea ice minima, but how the factors rank in setting the conditions for these events has not been quantified. To address this question, the sea ice budget of an Arctic regional sea ice–ocean model forced by atmospheric reanalysis data is analyzed to assess the development of the observed sea ice minima. Results show that the ice area difference in the years 2012, 2019, and 2007 is driven to over 60% by the difference in summertime sea ice area loss due to air–ocean heat flux over open water. Other contributions are small. For the years 2012 and 2020 the situation is different and more complex. The air–ice heat flux causes more sea ice area loss in summer 2020 than in 2012 due to warmer air temperatures, but this difference in sea ice area loss is compensated by reduced advective sea ice loss out of the Arctic Ocean mainly caused by the relaxation of the Arctic dipole. The difference in open water area in early August leads to different air–ocean heat fluxes, which distinguishes the sea ice minima in 2012 and 2020. Further, sensitivity experiments indicate that both the atmospheric circulation associated with the Arctic dipole and extreme storms are essential conditions for a new low record of sea ice extent. Instrumental records suggest multidecadal variability in Arctic surface temperature throughout the twentieth century. This variability is caused by a combination of external forcing and internal variability, but their relative importance remains unclear. Since the early twentieth century Arctic warming has been linked to decadal variability in the Pacific, we hypothesize that the Pacific could impact decadal temperature trends in the Arctic throughout the twentieth century. To investigate this, we compare two ensembles of historical all-forcing twentieth century simulations with the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM): (1) a fully coupled ensemble and (2) an ensemble where momentum flux anomalies from reanalysis are prescribed over the Indo-Pacific Ocean to constrain Pacific sea surface temperature variability. We find that the combined effect of tropical and extratropical Pacific decadal variability can explain up to ~ 50% of the observed decadal surface temperature trends in the Arctic. The Pacific-Arctic connection involves both lower tropospheric horizontal advection and subsidence-induced adiabatic heating, mediated by Aleutian Low variations. This link is detected across the twentieth century, but the response in Arctic surface temperature is moderated by external forcing and surface feedbacks. Our results also indicate that increased ocean heat transport from the Atlantic to the Arctic could have compensated for the impact of a cooling Pacific at the turn of the twenty-first century. This study demonstrates that assimilating SST with an advanced data assimilation method yields prediction skill level with the best state-of-the-art systems. We employ the Norwegian Climate Prediction Model (NorCPM)—a fully-coupled forecasting system—to assimilate SST observations with the ensemble Kalman filter. Predictions of NorCPM are compared to predictions from the North American Multimodel Ensemble (NMME) project. The global prediction skill of NorCPM at 6- and 12-month lead times is higher than the averaged skill of the NMME. A new metric is introduced for ranking model skill. According to the metric, NorCPM is one of the most skilful systems among the NMME in predicting SST in most regions. Confronting the skill to a large historical ensemble without assimilation, shows that the skill is largely derived from the initialisation rather than from the external forcing. NorCPM achieves good skill in predicting El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) up to 12 months ahead and achieves skill over land via teleconnections. However, NorCPM has a more pronounced reduction in skill in May than the NMME systems. An analysis of ENSO dynamics indicates that the skill reduction is mainly caused by model deficiencies in representing the thermocline feedback in February and March. We also show that NorCPM has skill in predicting sea ice extent at the Arctic entrance adjacent to the north Atlantic; this skill is highly related to the initialisation of upper ocean heat content. In this study, we investigate the influence of low-frequency solar forcing on the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) by analyzing a four-member ensemble of 600-year simulations performed with HadCM3 (Hadley Centre Coupled Model, version 3). We find that the EAWM is strengthened when total solar irradiance (TSI) increases on the multidecadal time scale. The model results indicate that positive TSI anomalies can result in the weakening of Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, causing negative sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the North Atlantic. Especially for the subtropical North Atlantic, the negative SST anomalies can excite an anomalous Rossby wave train that moves from the subtropical North Atlantic to the Greenland Sea and finally to Siberia. In this process, the positive sea-ice feedback over the Greenland Sea further enhances the Rossby wave. The wave train can reach the Siberian region, and strengthen the Siberian high. As a result, low-level East Asian winter circulation is strengthened and the surface air temperature in East Asia decreases. Overall, when solar forcing is stronger on the multidecadal time scale, the EAWM is typically stronger than normal. This study investigates the robustness of hydroclimate impacts in Asia due to major drivers of climate variability in the Pacific Ocean, namely the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Composite analyses are carried out on a tree ring-based Palmer Drought Severity Index as well as on a long coupled global climate model control experiment. El Niño (La Niña) has a robust impact on wet (dry) conditions in West Asia and dry (wet) conditions in South Asia. For the PDO, impacts are found throughout the Asia domain. However, identifying the robust signals due to PDO from these analyses is more challenging due to the limited lengths of the data. Results indicate that West Asia (South and Southeast Asia) experiences wet (dry) conditions during periods of positive PDO. For East Asia, there is indication that positive (negative) PDO is associated with wet (dry) conditions around and southward of 30°N and dry (wet) conditions north of this latitude. This result is consistent with the current understanding of the role of PDO in the “southern-flood northern-drought” phenomenon in China. We suggest that specific extreme events or periods have regional impacts with strong intensities that cannot be fully explained through the composite analysis of ENSO, PDO, or any combination thereof. Two such examples are shown to illustrate this: the Strange Parallel Drought (1756-1768 CE) and the Great Drought (1876-1878 CE). Additionally, during these climate events, ENSO and PDO can be in phases which are not consistent with the required phases of these drivers that explain the concurrent drought and pluvial conditions in Asia. Therefore, not all historical drought and pluvial events in Northeast Asia and northern China can be related back to ENSO or PDO. Finally, we also examine the dynamical characteristics of the reported hydroclimatic impacts in the global climate model experiment. There is moisture transport into (out of) regions that exhibit wet (dry) conditions in a manner consistent with the various ENSO and PDO composites, thereby providing physical explanation of the index-based results. Early studies suggested that the Aleutian-Icelandic low seesaw (AIS) features multidecadal variation. In this study, the multidecadal modulation of the AIS and associated surface climate by the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) during late winter (February-March) is explored with observational data. It is shown that, in the cold phase of the AMO (AMO|−), a clear AIS is established, while this is not the case in the warm phase of the AMO (AMO|+). The surface climate over Eurasia is significantly influenced by the AMO's modulation of the Aleutian low (AL). For example, the weak AL in AMO|− displays warmer surface temperatures over the entire Far East and along the Russian Arctic coast and into Northern Europe, but only over the Russian Far East in AMO|+. Similarly, precipitation decreases over central Europe with the weak AL in AMO|−, but decreases over northern Europe and increases over southern Europe in AMO|+. The mechanism underlying the influence of AMO|− on the AIS can be described as follows: AMO|− weakens the upward component of the Eliassen-Palm flux along the polar waveguide by reducing atmospheric blocking occurrence over the Euro-Atlantic sector, and hence drives an enhanced stratospheric polar vortex. With the intensified polar night jet, the wave trains originating over the central North Pacific can propagate horizontally through North America and extend into the North Atlantic, favoring an eastward-extended Pacific-North America-Atlantic pattern, and resulting in a significant AIS at the surface during late winter. This study focuses on the climatic impacts of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) as a mode of internal variability. Given the difficulties involved in excluding the effects of external forcing from internal variation, i.e., owing to the short record length of instrumental observations and historical simulations, we assess and compare the AMO and its related climatic impacts both in observations and in the 'Pre-industrial' experiments of models participating in CMIP5. First, we evaluate the skill of the 25 CMIP5 models' 'Historical' simulations in simulating the observational AMO, and find there is generally a considerable range of skill among them in this regard. Six of the models with higher skill relative to the other models are selected to investigate the AMO-related climate impacts, and it is found that their 'Pre-industrial' simulations capture the essential features of the AMO. A positive AMO favors warmer surface temperature around the North Atlantic, and the Atlantic ITCZ shifts northward leading to more rainfall in the Sahel and less rainfall in Brazil. Furthermore, the results confirm the existence of a teleconnection between the AMO and East Asian surface temperature, as well as the late withdrawal of the Indian summer monsoon, during positive AMO phases. Both Arctic sea ice loss and La Niña events can result in cold conditions in midlatitude Eurasia in winter. Since the two forcings sometimes occur simultaneously, determining whether they are independent of each other is undertaken first. The result suggests an overall independence. Considering possible interactions between them, their coordinated impacts on the Northern Hemisphere winter climate are then investigated based on observational data analyses, historical simulation analyses from one coupled model (MPI-ESM-LR) contributing to CMIP5, and atmospheric general circulation model sensitive experiments in ECHAM5. The results show that the impacts of the two forcings are overall linearly accumulated. In comparison with one single forcing, there is intensified cooling response in midlatitude Eurasia along with northern warmer-southern cooler dipolar temperature responses over North America. Despite the additive linearity, additive nonlinearity between the two forcings is identifiable. The nonlinearity causes midlatitude Eurasian cooling weakened by one-tenth to one-fifth as much as their individual impacts in combination. The underlying mechanisms for the weak additive nonlinearity are finally explored by transient adjustment AGCM runs with one single forcing or both the forcings switched on suddenly. The day-to-day evolution of responses suggests that the additive nonlinearity may arise initially from the forced wave dynamics and then be amplified because of the involvement of transient eddy feedbacks. A simple air-sea coupled model, the atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction coupled to a mixed-layer slab ocean model, is employed to investigate the impact of air-sea coupling on the signals of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). A regional coupling strategy is applied, in which coupling is switched off in the extratropical North Atlantic Ocean but switched on in the open oceans elsewhere. The coupled model is forced with warm-phase AMO SST anomalies, and the modeled responses are compared with those from parallel uncoupled AGCM experiments with the same SST forcing. The results suggest that the regionally coupled responses not only resemble the AGCM simulation, but also have a stronger intensity. In comparison, the coupled responses bear greater similarity to the observational composite anomaly. Thus, air-sea coupling enhances the responses of the East Asian winter climate to the AMO. To determine the mechanism responsible for the coupling amplification, an additional set of AGCM experiments, forced with the AMO-induced tropical SST anomalies, is conducted. The SST anomalies are extracted from the simulated AMO-induced SST response in the regionally coupled model. The results suggest that the SST anomalies contribute to the coupling amplification. Abstract: This paper examines the multidecadal variability in the northern North Atlantic and the Arctic. Observations, modeling and paleo data provide evidence of a strong link between the atmospheric and physical oceanographic variability in these northern regions with Atlantic sea surface temperatures farther south as expressed by the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). Air and sea temperatures over the past 100–150years reveal cool periods in the late 1800s to early 1900s and in the 1970s to 1980s with warm periods during the 1920s to 1960s and from the 1990s through to the present, similar to the variability in the AMO index where a positive (negative) AMO index represents warm (cold) periods. Sea-ice extent in the north has also varied at multidecadal scales with the ice retreating during the warm periods and expanding during the cold periods. The presence of multidecadal variability is also suggested from marine sediment paleo data as well as ice-core oxygen isotope data. Observations of biological impacts of the multidecadal variability in the northern regions include a general increase in plankton and fish productivity, as well as expansion of the species distributions northward, in conjunction with the AMO warm periods and the opposite during AMO cold periods. In addition, a review of the mechanisms responsible for the AMO and a brief discussion of the linkages between the multidecadal variability in the northern and southern hemispheres, including between the Arctic and Antarctic, are presented. Digital education emphasizes the use of technology to enhance and transform teaching, promoting the improvement of instructional models. It is poised to become a significant driving force in advancing high-quality educational development. However, numerous practical challenges remain, such as disadvantages of digital technology resources, ethical norms, and professional training. This study aims to examine the advantages, disadvantages, opportunities and challenges of the three Online physical education(OLPE) teaching modes-Edmodo, Zoom and Google Meet-through literature review, case-based empirical method, survey-based empirical method, mathematical statistics analysis and SWOT analysis. It explores the international OLPE teaching concept, aiming to integrate digital sports teaching within the OLPE model with current traditional teaching practices, and to develop a paradigm better aligned with modern educational methods. The results revealed that based on constructivist learning theory and situational learning, technological enhancements, correct ethics, and the integration of OLPE resources could help advance the development of digital-physical education teaching. The study offers valuable insights into the challenges and disadvantages of OLPE in digital education. Soybean ( Glycine max (Linn.) Merr.) is highly suitable as animal feed. The silage quality and microbial characteristics of soybean silage are still unclear. Forage soybean (HN389), at six different growth stages (R2-R7), were used as experimental materials to investigate the changes in fermentation, nutritional quality, and microbial characteristics of semidry silage after 0, 7, 14, 30, and 45 d. As the growth period extended, the content of crude protein (CP) and crude fat (EE) gradually increased, while the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and the acid detergent fiber (ADF) content decreased. The pH value also decreased gradually with fermentation time, accompanied by increases in the proportion of ammonia-N and the content of lactic acid (LA) and acetic acid (AA). In addition, competitive inhibition was observed in the microbial fermentation. With the process of ensiling, Lactobacillus became the dominant bacterial species. The results indicate that the most active stage of fermentation during ensiling occurred within the first 7 days, the fermentation and nutritional quality of the soybean forage were improved, and the optimal mowing stage was the grain stage. Comparison of the microbial abundance showed that all microorganisms entered a stable stage at 30 days of silage. After storage, the dominant bacteria were Lactobacillus , Enterobacter , and Pantoea .

Electrocatalytic coupling of CO and N 2 to synthesize urea under ambient conditions is considered a promising strategy to replace traditional industrial technology. It is crucial to find efficient electrocatalysts that can adsorb and activate N 2 and promote the C-N coupling reaction. Herein, a new two-dimensional porous carbon nitride material with multiactive sites is designed, in which boron and transition metal are embedded. Through a series of screening, B 2 Cr 2 , B 2 Mn 2 , and B 2 Os 2 are predicted to be potential electrocatalysts for urea synthesis. Mechanistic studies are performed on bidentate metal-metal and metal-boron sites, and both NCON and CO mechanisms are explored. The electronic structure analysis shows that there is a strong N 2 chemical adsorption within the bidentate site and that the N≡N bond is significantly activated. A new mechanism where free CO is inserted for C-N coupling within the two-dimensional porous structure is proposed.

Background: Preeclampsia (PE) is the primary cause of perinatal maternal-fetal mortality and morbidity. The exact molecular mechanisms of PE pathogenesis are largely unknown. This study aims to identify the hub genes in PE and explore their potential molecular regulatory network., Methods: We downloaded the GSE148241, GSE190971, GSE74341, and GSE114691 datasets for the placenta and performed a differential expression analysis to identify hub genes. We performed Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), Disease Ontology (DO), Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA), and Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) Analysis to determine functional roles and regulatory networks of differentially expressed genes (DEGs). We then verified the DEGs at transcriptional and translational levels by analyzing the GSE44711 and GSE177049 datasets and our clinical samples, respectively., Results: We identified 60 DEGs in the discovery phase, consisting of 7 downregulated genes and 53 upregulated genes. We then identified seven hub genes using Cytoscape software. In the verification phase, 4 and 3 of the seven genes exhibited the same variation patterns at the transcriptional level in the GSE44711 and GSE177049 datasets, respectively. This article reviews studies on the knowledge transfer theory (KTT) in sport psychology using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method to identify any existing research gaps. This review utilizes a systematic process that involves searching for studies aimed at clarifying the relationship between KTT and crossover selection, promoting crossover development of winter sports, and cultivating outstanding athletes across six different databases. This work provides the foundation for future research on KTT in the field of selection of athletes for professional sports and those intending to showcase KTT's success in the selection of winter sports athletes. In the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), nitrogen (N 2 ) is chemically inert, it is difficult to break the triple bond, and the subsequent protonation step is very challenging. Suitable catalysts with high selectivity and high activity are needed to promote the electrocatalytic NRR. We screen a large number of clusters composed of three metal atoms embedded into a two-dimensional metal nitride, W 2 N 3 , with a N vacancy, and calculate the reaction energetics. The VNiCu cluster has the best catalytic activity among all the catalysts proposed so far. The Fe 3 and Fe 2 Co clusters are excellent catalysts as well. In all cases, spin polarization is needed to observe the catalytic effect. We establish the optimal NRR path and confirm that it remains unchanged in the presence of a solvent. We find three groups of descriptors that can well predict the materials' properties and exhibit linear relationships with the NRR limiting potential.

Aims: This study aims to present an in-depth review of the available literature on the effect of core training on skill-related physical fitness performance among soccer players, as well as to offer suggestions for researchers and coaches., Methods: The data in this study were presented based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline. Using scientific databases and web search engines including Scopus, Ebscohost, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar, researchers collected studies from the published literature. Only 26 of the 84 articles satisfied all the inclusion criteria and were thus included in the systematic review. The quality of each study was determined using the PEDro scale. The scores for 26 studies range between three and six., Results: Core training can improve soccer players' skill-related physical fitness, including their power, speed, balance, and agility., Conclusion: The core is the anatomic and functional center of the body as well as its "engine." All movements emanate from the center of the body and are transmitted to the extremities. The core muscles differ from the limb muscles because they frequently cocontract, thus making the torso hard to the point whereby all the muscles work together to become synergists. Theoretically, a strong core permits the passage of force from the lower body to the upper body with minimal energy loss in the torso. Background: Resistance training has been widely used in various sports and improves competition performance, especially in swimming. Swimming performance is highly dependent on muscle strength, especially short distances. For adolescent athletes, the existing literature has bound to prove that resistance training is undoubtedly bound to improve swimmers' performance., Objectives: This study adopts a systematic literature review to (1) examine the effects of resistance training on the performance of adolescent swimmers, and (2) summarize their training methods and intensity., Methods: The literature search was undertaken in five international databases: the SCOUPS, PubMed, EBSCOhost (SPORTDiscus), CNKL, Web of Science. The searches covered documents in English and Chinese published until 30th December 2020. Electronic databases using various keywords related to "strength training" and "adolescent swimmers" were searched. Sixteen studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria where the data was then systematically reviewed using the PRISMA guideline. Furthermore, the physical therapy evidence database (PEDro) scale was used to measure each study's scientific rigor., Results: This review found that to improve the swimming performance of adolescents, two types of resistance training were used, specifically in water and on land, where both types of training can improve swimming performance. In addition, training with two types of resistance machines were better in the water than with one equipment. Resistance training can improve the swimming performance of adolescent swimmers at 50 m, 100 m, 200 m and 400 m distances. However, most studies only focused on the swimming performance at 50 m and 100 m lengths. A low-intensity, high-speed resistance training programme is recommended for adolescent swimmers to obtain the best training results., Conclusion: Water or land resistance training can improve the swimming performance. Given that both types of exercises have their strengths and weaknesses, combining these methods may enhance the swimmers' performance.
