Abstract

Semi-arid vegetation is predominant in Mexico, and the Tehuacan-Cuicatlan Biosphere Reserve is considered one of the most biodiverse semiarid protected areas in the country. The objectives of our study were to evaluate the diversity of ground-dwelling birds through the opportunistic use of camera traps set for monitoring mammal species, and to determine the relationship between bird diversity and 4 environmental variables (distance to rivers, tree cover, shntb cover, and environmental heterogeneity) and 5 anthropogenic variables (distance to roads, human settlements, and agricultural zones, and numbers of cows, donkeys, goats, and people) within the La Canada region, located inside this reserve. We used bird records from 93 camera-trapping stations taken over the period 2011-2016. In order to evaluate the relationship of bird diversity with environmental variables, a subgroup of 36 camera traps was selected and analyzed using generalized linear models. We recorded a total of 30 bird species in > 1,368 photographic records collected over 33,000 camera-trap-days. These birds belonged to 14 orders, 22 families, and represented 23% of the total number of species known to occur in La Canada. A Clench species accumulation model estimated 38.5 ground-dwelling birds. Record frequency varied significantly among vegetation types and was greater in the crassicaule scrub and tropical deciduous forest (79% of the records). The diversity indices were higher closer to the rivers, and in areas with greater tree coverage and low human activity. High environmental heterogeneity positively influenced the higher diversity of ground-dwelling birds compared to that of sites al greater distance from water bodies or with little vegetation cover. Noninvasive techniques, such as camera-trapping, could be a complementary method for evaluating ground-dwelling bird activity, occupancy, and habitat use. We also recommend that similar opportunistic data of considerable biological and ecological value be published rather than simply archived. Received 28 November 2019. Accepted 1 October 2021. Abstract

A gap in the proof of the main result in reference [1] in our original submission propagated into the constructions presented in the first version of our manuscript. In this version we give an alternative proof for the existence of Riemannian metrics with positive Ricci curvature on an infinite subfamily of closed, simply-connected smooth manifolds with a cohomogeneity two torus action and recover some of our original results. Namely, we show that, for each $n\geqslant 1$, there exist infinitely many spin and non-spin diffeomorphism types of closed, smooth, simply-connected $(n+4)$-manifolds with a smooth, effective action of a torus $T^{n+2}$ and a metric of positive Ricci curvature invariant under a $T^{n}$-subgroup of $T^{n+2}$. As an application, we show that every closed, smooth, simply-connected $5$- and $6$-manifold admitting a smooth, effective torus action of cohomogeneity two supports metrics with positive Ricci curvature., Comment: 11 pages, to appear in Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society

We study closed three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces with a lower Ricci curvature bound in the $\mathsf{CD}^*(K,N)$ sense, focusing our attention on those with positive or nonnegative Ricci curvature. First, we show that a closed three-dimensional $\mathsf{CD}^*(2,3)$-Alexandrov space must be homeomorphic to a spherical space form or to the suspension of $\mathbb{R}P^2$. Abstract

We report the first record of Bronzed Cowbird (Molothrus aeneus) brood parasitism on the year-round resident Golden-crowned Warbler (Basileuterus culicivorus). Our observations represent the 105th known host species for this cowbird species and the ninth known host species from the Family Parulidae. Our assignment of these records to the true host list are based on observations of a pair of Golden-crowned Warblers feeding caterpillars to a Bronzed Cowbird fledgling in a shade coffee plantation in Zentla, Veracruz, Mexico. Abstract

The sum of products of random variables arises in many applications, particularly in wireless communications. However, the analytical derivation of essential statistics, such as the probability density function and cumulative distribution function, still purveys significant challenges. The objective of this work is to derive exact formulations for the density and distribution of the sum of an arbitrary N instances, each comprising $L_{n}, n\in \{1,2,\ldots ,N\}$ products of independent Rayleigh-distributed variates. This renders our exact formulations rather flexible to comprise different fading scenarios. Based on our findings, we investigate the performance of a communication system employing a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) by deriving key metrics, such as outage probability and average bit error rate. Also, we employ the central limit theorem to approximate the sum of envelope products and performance metrics. In addition, we conduct an asymptotic analysis to deepen our understanding of the system’s performance. Specifically, we obtain simple closed-form expressions for all the metrics derived here. Our analytical results are validated through Monte Carlo simulations.

We complete the equivariant classification of closed, simply connected cohomogeneity one topological manifolds in dimensions $5$, $6$, and $7$ and obtain topological characterizations of these spaces. However, minimal attention has centered on the essential needs that influence their daily experiences in college. This qualitative study explored the experiences of male students of color in community college. Findings revealed various environmental challenges experienced by these men, including food and housing insecurities. Implications for institutional responsibility are extended.

Abstract

Background: Neutrophils are granulocytes with essential antimicrobial effector functions and short lifespans. During infection or sterile inflammation, emergency granulopoiesis leads to release of immature neutrophils from the bone marrow, serving to boost circulating neutrophil counts. Steady state and emergency granulopoiesis are incompletely understood, partly due to a lack of genetically amenable models of neutrophil development. Methods: We optimised a method for ex vivo production of human neutrophils from CD34+ haematopoietic progenitors. Using flow cytometry, we phenotypically compared cultured neutrophils with native neutrophils from donors experiencing emergency granulopoiesis, and steady state neutrophils from non-challenged donors. We carry out functional and proteomic characterisation of cultured neutrophils and establish genome editing of progenitors. Results: We obtain high yields of ex vivo cultured neutrophils, which phenotypically resemble immature neutrophils released into the circulation during emergency granulopoiesis. Cultured neutrophils have similar rates of ROS production and bacterial killing but altered degranulation, cytokine release and antifungal activity compared to mature neutrophils isolated from peripheral blood. These differences are likely due to incomplete synthesis of granule proteins, as demonstrated by proteomic analysis. Conclusion: Ex vivo cultured neutrophils are genetically tractable via genome editing of precursors and provide a powerful model system for investigating the properties and behaviour of immature neutrophils.
