207. Engineering Design Pedagogy: A Performance Analysis

Abstract

Cornerstone design courses have become a major part of engineering curricula, where students with different personality types and learning styles work together to design, develop, build, and demonstrate the functionality of a prototype within the duration of a term. This study analyzes student and team performance against gender, personality types, and learning styles in a second-year engineering design course. Further, the correlations between several assessment mechanisms are studied, and the effects of three different instructional design approaches on students' performance are explored. Data have been collected on student performance and psychometrics, including marks, gender, personality type, and learning style from 2001 to 2018. To identify students' personality types and learning styles, Myers-Briggs Type Indicators (MBTI) and Neil Fleming's Learning VARK tests were administered. To evaluate students' performance in the course, a number of assessment mechanisms have been defined. Several statistical methods are used to analyze data, and to determine correlation between datasets. Over nearly two decades of marks, gender, MBTI, and VARK data for 2637 students are presented for an engineering design course. The results demonstrated that there was no significant difference in performance across most assessments based on gender or gender distribution on a team. A better performance was observed from VK bimodal and quadmodal learning styles in most assessment mechanisms. Further, certain MBTI groups, namely, judging types outperformed their peers in engineering design assessments, with interesting interplay between MBTI dimensions for specific assessments and team dynamics. Traditional assessment mechanisms, such as engineering notebook and design proposals, are shown to be good predictors of student success. Lastly, scaffolded design activities and front-loading of lecture content were shown to be beneficial for student learning. There is negligible performance difference between female and male students in the engineering design course. Students whose preferred learning styles align with the assessment themes showed better performance in the course. The outcomes of this paper can be readily applied by instructors for design of assessment mechanisms, course materials, team formation, and instructional design.

Abstract

Research infrastructures play a key role in launching a new generation of integrated long-Term, geographically distributed observation programmes designed to monitor climate change, better understand its impacts on global ecosystems, and evaluate possible mitigation and adaptation strategies. The pan-European Integrated Carbon Observation System combines carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG; CO 2 , CH 4 , N 2 O, H 2 O) observations within the atmosphere, terrestrial ecosystems and oceans. High-precision measurements are obtained using standardised methodologies, are centrally processed and openly available in a traceable and verifiable fashion in combination with detailed metadata. The Integrated Carbon Observation System ecosystem station network aims to sample climate and land-cover variability across Europe. In addition to GHG flux measurements, a large set of complementary data (including management practices, vegetation and soil characteristics) is collected to support the interpretation, spatial upscaling and modelling of observed ecosystem carbon and GHG dynamics. The applied sampling design was developed and formulated in protocols by the scientific community, representing a trade-off between an ideal dataset and practical feasibility. The use of open-Access, high-quality and multi-level data products by different user communities is crucial for the Integrated Carbon Observation System in order to achieve its scientific potential and societal value.

Abstract

The present paper is devoted to the numerical approximation of an abstract stochastic nonlinear evolution equation in a separable Hilbert space {$\mathrm{H}$}. Examples of equations which fall into our framework include the GOY and Sabra shell models and { a class of nonlinear heat equations.} The space-time numerical scheme is defined in terms of a Galerkin approximation in space and a { semi-implicit Euler--Maruyama scheme in time}. {We prove the convergence in probability of our scheme by means of an estimate of the error on a localized set of arbitrary large probability.} Our error estimate is shown to hold in a more regular space $\mathrm{V}_{\beta}\subset \mathrm{H}$ with $\beta \in [0,\frac14)$ and { that the explicit rate of convergence of our scheme depends on this parameter $\beta$. }

Abstract

This article is devoted to study stochastic lattice dynamical systems driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in(1/2,1)$. First of all, we investigate the existence and uniqueness of pathwise mild solutions to such systems by the Young integration setting and prove that the solution generates a random dynamical system. Further, we analyze the exponential stability of the trivial solution.

Abstract

Families of $N$ interacting curves are considered, with long range, mean field type, interaction. A family of curves defines a 1-current, concentrated on the curves, analog of the empirical measure of interacting point particles. This current is proved to converge, as $N$ goes to infinity, to a mean field current, solution of a nonlinear, vector valued, partial differential equation. In the limit, each curve interacts with the mean field current and two different curves have an independence property if they are independent at time zero. This set-up is inspired from vortex filaments in turbulent fluids, although for technical reasons we have to restrict to smooth interaction, instead of the singular Biot-Savart kernel. All these results are based on a careful analysis of a nonlinear flow equation for 1-currents, its relation with the vector valued PDE and the continuous dependence on the initial conditions.

Abstract

We study a modified three-dimensional incompressible anisotropic Navier-Stokes equations. The modification consists in the addition of a power term to the nonlinear convective one. This modification appears naturally in porous media when a fluid obeys the Darcy-Forchheimer law instead of the classical Darcy law. We prove global in time existence and uniqueness of solutions without assuming the smallness condition on the initial data. In the present paper we study a stochastic evolution equation for shell (SABRA \& GOY) models with pure jump \levy noise $L=\sum_{k=1}^\infty l_k(t)e_k$ on a Hilbert space $\h$. Here $\{l_k, k\in \mathbb{N}\}$ is a family of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) real-valued pure jump \levy processes and $\{e_k, k\in \mathbb{N}\}$ is an orthonormal basis of $\h$. We mainly prove that the stochastic system has a unique invariant measure. For this aim we show that if the \levy measure of each component $l_k(t)$ of $L$ satisfies a certain order and a non-{degeneracy} condition and is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure, then the Markov semigroup associated {with} the unique solution of the system has the strong Feller property. If, furthermore, each $l_k(t)$ satisfies a small deviation property, then 0 is accessible for the dynamics independently of the initial condition. Examples of noises satisfying our conditions are a family of i.i.d tempered \levy noises $\{l_k, k\in \mathbb{N}\}$ and $\{l_k=W_k\circ G_k + G_k, k\in \mathbb{N} \}$ where $\{G_k, k \in \mathbb{N}\}$ (resp., $\{W_k, k\in \mathbb{N}\}$) is a sequence of i.i.d subordinator Gamma (resp., real-valued Wiener) processes with \levy density $f_G(z)=(\vartheta z)^{-1} e^{-\frac z\vartheta} \mathds{1}_{z>0}$.
