The vanishing of the Higgs quartic coupling at a high energy scale may be explained by Intermediate Scale Supersymmetry, where supersymmetry breaks at $(10^9$-$10^{12})$ GeV. The possible range of supersymmetry breaking scales can be narrowed down by precise measurements of the top quark mass and the strong coupling constant. On the other hand, nuclear recoil experiments can probe Higgsino or sneutrino dark matter up to a mass of $10^{12}$ GeV. We derive the correlation between the dark matter mass and precision measurements of standard model parameters, including supersymmetric threshold corrections. The dark matter mass is bounded from above as a function of the top quark mass and the strong coupling constant. The top quark mass and the strong coupling constant are bounded from above and below respectively for a given dark matter mass. We also discuss how the observed dark matter abundance can be explained by freeze-out or freeze-in during a matter-dominated era after inflation, with the inflaton condensate being dissipated by thermal effects., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

Reheating is a process where the energy density of a dominant component of the universe other than radiation, such as a matter component, is transferred into radiation. It is usually assumed that the temperature of the universe decreases due to cosmic expansion even during the reheating process, in which case the maximal temperature of the universe is much higher than the reheat temperature. We point out that the temperature of the universe during reheating may in fact increase in well-motivated scenarios. We derive the necessary conditions for the temperature to increase during reheating and discuss concrete examples involving a scalar field. The standard model Higgs quartic coupling vanishes at $(10^{9}-10^{13})$ GeV. We study $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$ theories that incorporate the Higgs Parity mechanism, where this becomes the scale of Left-Right symmetry breaking, $v_R$. Furthermore, these theories solve the strong CP problem and predict three right-handed neutrinos. We introduce cosmologies where $SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge interactions produce right-handed neutrinos via the freeze-out or freeze-in mechanisms. In both cases, we find the parameter space where the lightest right-handed neutrino is dark matter and the decay of a heavier one creates the baryon asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis. A theory of flavor is constructed that naturally accounts for the lightness and stability of the right-handed neutrino dark matter, while maintaining sufficient baryon asymmetry. The dark matter abundance and successful natural leptogenesis require $v_R$ to be in the range $(10^{10}-10^{13})$ GeV for freeze-out, in remarkable agreement with the scale where the Higgs quartic coupling vanishes, whereas freeze-in requires $v_R \gtrsim 10^9$ GeV. The allowed parameter space can be probed by the warmness of dark matter, precise determinations of the top quark mass and QCD coupling by future colliders and lattice computations, and measurement of the neutrino mass hierarchy., Comment: 46 pages, 16 figures

$SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ gauge symmetry requires three right-handed neutrinos ($ N _i $), one of which, $N_1$, can be sufficiently stable to be dark matter. In the early universe, $ W _R $ exchange with the Standard Model thermal bath keeps the right-handed neutrinos in thermal equilibrium at high temperatures. $N_1$ can make up all of dark matter if they freeze-out while relativistic and are mildly diluted by subsequent decays of a long-lived and heavier right-handed neutrino, $N_2$. We systematically study this parameter space, constraining the symmetry breaking scale of $SU(2)_R$ and the mass of $N_1$ to a triangle in the $(v_R,M_1)$ plane, with $v_R = (10^6 - 3 \times 10^{12})$ GeV and $M_1 = (2\, {\rm keV} - 1 \, {\rm MeV)}$. Much of this triangle can be probed by signals of warm dark matter, especially if leptogenesis from $N_2$ decay yields the observed baryon asymmetry. The minimal value of $v_R$ is increased to $10^8 \, {\rm GeV}$ for doublet breaking of $SU(2)_R$, and further to $10^9 \, {\rm GeV}$ if leptogenesis occurs via $N_2$ decay, while the upper bound on $M_1$ is reduced to 100 keV. In addition, there is a component of hot $N_1$ dark matter resulting from the late decay of $N_2 \rightarrow N_1 \ell^+ \ell^-$ that can be probed by future cosmic microwave background observations. Interestingly, the range of $v_R$ allows both precision gauge coupling unification and the Higgs Parity understanding of the vanishing of the Standard Model Higgs quartic at scale $v_R$. Axion cold dark matter from standard misalignment typically requires a decay constant $f_a~\gtrsim~10^{11}$ GeV. Kinetic misalignment and parametric resonance easily allow lower values of $f_a$ when the radial Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking field takes large initial values. Here, we consider the effects of inflation on kinetic misalignment and parametric resonance. We assume that the initial PQ field value is determined by quantum fluctuations, and is set by the Hubble parameter during inflation, $H_I$, and the PQ field mass. PQ field oscillations begin before or after the completion of reheating after inflation at a temperature $T_R$. We determine the range of $f_a$ and the inflationary parameters $(H_I, T_R)$ consistent with axion dark matter for a quartic potential for the PQ field. We find that $4\times 10^8$ GeV $< f_a < 10^{11}$ GeV can consistently produce axion dark matter. A significant portion of the allowed parameter space predicts rare kaon decays, $K_L \rightarrow (\pi^0 + \rm{missing \; energy})$, and/or suppression of structure formation on small scales., Comment: 40 pages, 6 figures

In the conventional misalignment mechanism, the axion field has a constant initial field value in the early Universe and later begins to oscillate. We present an alternative scenario where the axion field has a nonzero initial velocity, allowing an axion decay constant much below the conventional prediction from axion dark matter. This axion velocity can be generated from explicit breaking of the axion shift symmetry in the early Universe, which may occur as this symmetry is approximate.

Adding an axion-like particle (ALP) to the Standard Model, with a field velocity in the early universe, simultaneously explains the observed baryon and dark matter densities. This requires one or more couplings between the ALP and photons, nucleons, and/or electrons that are predicted as functions of the ALP mass. These predictions arise because the ratio of dark matter to baryon densities is independent of the ALP field velocity, allowing a correlation between the ALP mass, $m_a$, and decay constant, $f_a$. The predicted couplings are orders of magnitude larger than those for the QCD axion and for dark matter from the conventional ALP misalignment mechanism. Detection of electron recoils by dark matter (DM) may reveal the structure of the dark sector. We consider a scenario where a heavier DM particle inelastically scatters off an electron and is converted into a lighter DM particle. A small mass difference between the two DM particles is transferred into electron recoil energy. We investigate the DM-electron interaction mediated by a massive dark photon and evaluate the inelastic DM scattering rate, taking account of the atomic structure. It is found that the scattering rate is significantly enhanced because of the small mass splitting, which allows for a small momentum transfer matched with the size of the electron wave function. We consider a cosmological scenario where a relativistic particle and a stable massive particle are simultaneously produced from the decay of a late-decaying particle after Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis but before matter-radiation equality. The relativistic and massive particles behave as dark radiation and warm dark matter, respectively. Due to a common origin, the warmness and abundances are closely related. We refer to the models that lead to such a scenario as Common Origin of Warm and Relativistic Decay Products (COWaRD). We show that COWaRD predicts a correlation between the amount of dark radiation and suppression of the large scale structure, which can be tested in future precision cosmology observations. We demonstrate that COWaRD is realized, as an example, in a class of supersymmetric axion models and that future observations by the next generation Cosmic Microwave Background, Large Scale Structure, and 21-cm surveys can reveal the structure of the theory., Comment: Version accepted for publication. 22 pages + 2 appendices and references

Supersymmetric Twin Higgs models have a discrete symmetry for which each Standard Model particle and its supersymmetric partner have a corresponding state that transforms under a mirror Standard Model gauge group. This framework is able to accommodate the non-discovery of new particles at the LHC with the naturalness of the electroweak scale. We point out that supersymmetric Twin Higgs models also provide a natural dark matter candidate. We investigate the possibility that a twin bino-like state is the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle and find that its freeze-out abundance can explain the observed dark matter abundance without fine-tuning the mass spectrum of the theory. We investigate the possibility that the Peccei-Quinn phase transition occurs at a temperature far below the symmetry breaking scale. Low phase transition temperatures are typical in supersymmetric theories, where symmetry breaking fields have small masses. We find that QCD axions are abundantly produced just after the phase transition. The observed dark matter abundance is reproduced even if the decay constant is much lower than $10^{11}$ GeV. The produced axions tend to be warm. For some range of the decay constant, the effect of the predicted warmness on structure formation can be confirmed by future observations of 21 cm lines. An exact parity replicates the Standard Model giving a Mirror Standard Model, SM $\leftrightarrow$ SM$'$. This "Higgs Parity" and the mirror electroweak symmetry are spontaneously broken by the mirror Higgs, $\left\langle H'\right\rangle = v' \gg \left\langle H\right\rangle$, yielding the Standard Model Higgs as a Pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone Boson of an approximate $SU(4)$ symmetry, with a quartic coupling $\lambda_{SM}(v') \sim 10^{-3}$. Mirror electromagnetism is unbroken and dark matter is composed of $e'$ and $\bar{e}'$. Direct detection may be possible via the kinetic mixing portal, and in unified theories this rate is correlated with the proton decay rate. With a high reheat temperature after inflation, the $e'$ dark matter abundance is determined by freeze-out followed by dilution from decays of mirror neutrinos, $\nu' \rightarrow \ell H$. Remarkably, this requires $v' \sim (10^8 - 10^{10})$ GeV, consistent with the Higgs mass, and a Standard Model neutrino mass of $(10^{-2} - 10^{-1})$ eV, consistent with observed neutrino masses. The mirror QCD sector exhibits a first order phase transition producing gravitational waves that may be detected by future observations. Mirror glueballs decay to mirror photons giving dark radiation with $\Delta N_{\rm eff} \sim 0.03 - 0.4$. The Affleck-Dine mechanism creates the baryon asymmetry of the universe from an angular motion of a complex scalar field. The mechanism is efficient and allows for a low reheating temperature of the universe if the scalar field has a flat potential along its radial direction. We consider a possibility where the scalar field is a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson arising from spontaneous breaking of an approximate global symmetry, so that the flatness of the potential is naturally understood. We construct a concrete realization of the idea based on chiral symmetry breaking in an SU(N) gauge theory. The Peccei-Quinn mechanism can be consistently incorporated into the model. Scalar fields in the minimal supersymmetric standard model may have large field values during inflation. Because of approximate global symmetry, it is plausible that the phase directions of them are nearly massless during inflation and obtain quantum fluctuations, which may be the origin of the cosmic perturbations. If perturbations are produced through Q-ball formation, baryon asymmetry and dark matter can be consistently generated. Significant baryon and dark matter isocurvature perturbations are produced, but they are predicted to nearly compensate each other. The lepton asymmetry is much larger than the baryon asymmetry. A new class of supersymmetric Twin Higgs (TH) models where new gauge symmetry is responsible for the TH mechanism is reviewed. In this class of models the Higgs mass is naturally in agreement with the LHC measurement while the electroweak symmetry breaking is realised without excessive tuning despite of strong lower bounds on masses of supersymmetric particles set by the LHC. An exact spacetime parity replicates the $SU(2) \times U(1)$ electroweak interaction, the Higgs boson $H$, and the matter of the Standard Model. This "Higgs Parity" and the mirror electroweak symmetry are spontaneously broken at scale $v' = \left\langle{H'} \right\rangle \gg \left\langle{H}\right\rangle$, yielding the Standard Model below $v'$ with a quartic coupling that essentially vanishes at $v'$: $\lambda_{SM}(v') \sim 10^{-3}$. The strong CP problem is solved as Higgs parity forces the masses of mirror quarks and ordinary quarks to have opposite phases. Dark matter is composed of mirror electrons, $e'$, stabilized by unbroken mirror electromagnetism. These interact with Standard Model particles via kinetic mixing between the photon and the mirror photon, which arises at four-loop level and is a firm prediction of the theory. Physics below $v'$, including the mass and interaction of $e'$ dark matter, is described by $\textit{one fewer parameter}$ than in the Standard Model. The vanishing of the Higgs quartic coupling of the Standard Model at high energies may be explained by spontaneous breaking of Higgs Parity. Taking Higgs Parity to originate from the Left-Right symmetry of the $SO(10)$ gauge group, leads to a new scheme for precision gauge coupling unification that is consistent with proton decay. We compute the relevant running of couplings and threshold corrections to allow a precise correlation among Standard Model parameters. The scheme has a built-in solution for obtaining a realistic value for $m_b/m_\tau$, which further improves the precision from gauge coupling unification, allowing the QCD coupling constant to be predicted to the level of 1 % or, alternatively, the top quark mass to 0.2 %. Future measurements of these parameters may significantly constrain the detailed structure of the theory. We also study an $SO(10)$ embedding of quark and lepton masses, showing how large neutrino mixing is compatible with small quark mixing, and predict a normal neutrino mass hierarchy.
