Abstract

RoomShift is a room-scale dynamic haptic environment for virtual reality, using a small swarm of robots that can move furniture. RoomShift consists of nine shape-changing robots: Roombas with mechanical scissor lifts. These robots drive beneath a piece of furniture to lift, move and place it. By augmenting virtual scenes with physical objects, users can sit on, lean against, place and otherwise interact with furniture with their whole body; just as in the real world. When the virtual scene changes or users navigate within it, the swarm of robots dynamically reconfigures the physical environment to match the virtual content. Abstract

Recognizing and understanding conversational groups, or F-formations, is a critical task for situated agents designed to interact with humans. F-formations contain complex structures and dynamics, yet are used intuitively by people in everyday face-to-face conversations. Prior research exploring ways of identifying F-formations has largely relied on heuristic algorithms that may not capture the rich dynamic behaviors employed by humans. We introduce REFORM (REcognize F-FORmations with Machine learning), a data-driven approach for detecting F-formations given human and agent positions and orientations. REFORM decomposes the scene into all possible pairs and then reconstructs F-formations with a voting-based scheme. We evaluated our approach across three datasets: the SALSA dataset, a newly collected human-only dataset, and a new set of acted human-robot scenarios, and found that REFORM yielded improved accuracy over a state-of-the-art F-formation detection algorithm. We also introduce symmetry and tightness as quantitative measures to characterize F-formations. 203. PufferBot: Actuated Expandable Structures for Aerial Robots

Abstract

We present PufferBot, an aerial robot with an expandable structure that may expand to protect a drone's propellers when the robot is close to obstacles or collocated humans. PufferBot is made of a custom 3D-printed expandable scissor structure, which utilizes a one degree of freedom actuator with rack and pinion mechanism. We propose four designs for the expandable structure, each with unique characterizations for different situations. Finally, we present three motivating scenarios in which PufferBot may extend the utility of existing static propeller guard structures. Abstract

In this paper, we present a new theoretical model for the dielectrophoresis (DEP) process of the single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). We obtain a different frequency interval for the alignment of wide energy gap semiconductor SWCNTs which shows a considerable difference with the prevalent model. For this, we study two specific models namely, the spherical model and the ellipsoid model to estimate the frequency interval. Then, we perform the DEP process and use the obtained frequencies (of spherical and ellipsoid models) for the alignment of the SWCNTs. Our empirical results declare the theoretical prediction, i.e., a crucial step toward the realization of carbon nanotube field-effect transistor (CNT-FET) with the DEP process based on the ellipsoid model.

205. Additively manufactured hybrid anisotropic pentamode metamaterials

Abstract

Pentamode metamaterials are a type of extremal designer metamaterials which are able to demonstrate high rigidity in one direction and extremely high compliance in other directions. Pentamodes can, therefore, be considered as building blocks of exotic materials with any arbitrarily selected thermodynamically admissible elasticity tensor. The pentamode lattices can then be envisioned to be combined to construct intermediate extremal materials such as quadramodes, trimodes, and bimodes. In this study, we constructed several primary types of anisotropic pentamode lattices (with midpoint positioning of 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, and 42% of the main unit cell diagonal) and then combined them mutually to explore the dependence of elastic properties of hybrid pentamodes on those of individual constructing lattices. Several anisotropic individual and hybrid pentamode lattice structures were produced using MultiJet Additive Manufacturing technique and then mechanically tested under compression. Finite element models were also created using COMSOL Multiphysics package. Two-component hybrid pentamode lattices composed of individual lattices with extensively different (as large as of 2 order of magnitudes) FOM ratios were constructed and analysed. It was demonstrated that it is possible to design and construct composite intermediate extremal materials with arbitrary eigen values in the elastic tensor. It is concluded that the elastic E, shear G, and bulk moduli B of the hybrid structure are the superpositions of the corresponding moduli of the individual lattice structures. The Poisson's ratio of the hybrid pentamode structure equals that of individual structure with higher Poisson's ratio. The yield stress of the hybrid pentamode lattice structure depends on the elastic moduli of the constructing lattice structures as well as yield stress of the weaker lattice structure.

Abstract

The proliferation of fast, dense, byte-addressable nonvolatile memory suggests that data might be kept in pointer-rich "in-memory" format across program runs and even process and system crashes. For full generality, such data requires dynamic memory allocation, and while the allocator could in principle "rolled into" each data structure, it is desirable to make it a separate abstraction. Toward this end, we introduce recoverability, a correctness criterion for persistent allocators, together with a nonblocking allocator, Ralloc, that satisfies this criterion. Ralloc is based on the LRMalloc of Leite and Rocha, with three key innovations. First, we persist just enough information during normal operation to permit correct reconstruction of the heap after a full-system crash. Our reconstruction mechanism performs garbage collection (GC) to identify and remedy any failure-induced memory leaks. Second, we introduce the notion of filter functions, which identify the locations of pointers within persistent blocks to mitigate the limitations of conservative GC. Third, to allow persistent regions to be mapped at an arbitrary address, we employ position-independent (offset-based) pointers for both data and metadata. Experiments show Ralloc to be performance-competitive with both Makalu, the state-of-the-art lock-based persistent allocator, and such transient allocators as LRMalloc and JEMalloc. In particular, reliance on GC and offline metadata reconstruction allows Ralloc to pay almost nothing for persistence during normal operation.

Abstract

Smoking is not only a preventable cause of significant systemic disease but also affects the follicular growth cycle and fiber pigmentation. Ambient tobacco smoke exposure results in nicotine accumulation in hair follicles and the hair shaft. This review summarizes the evidence on the association between smoking and hair health, as denoted by alopecia and premature hair graying (PHG). In July 2020, a review of the literature using PubMed/MEDLINE and CINAHL databases identified 32 studies investigating the relationship between smoking, PHG, and alopecia (androgenetic alopecia and frontal fibrosing alopecia). The prevalence of hair loss and PHG is more prevalent in smokers than nonsmokers. Smoking is associated with negative effects on hair health as evidenced in PHG and alopecia. Smoking status should be assessed in patients who are presenting to their dermatologist for evaluation of alopecia and PHG.

Abstract

The interactions between proteins and chlorogenic acid (CGA) have gained significant attention in recent years, not only as a promising approach to modify the structural and techno-functional properties of proteins but also to enhance their bioactive potential in food systems. These interactions can be divided into covalent (chemical or irreversible) and non-covalent (physical or reversible) linkages. Mechanistically, CGA forms covalent bonds with nucleophilic amino acid residues of proteins by alkaline, free radical, and enzymatic approaches, leading to changes in protein structure and functionality, such as solubility, emulsification properties, and antioxidant activity. In addition, the protein–CGA complexes can be obtained by hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, and van der Waals forces, each offering unique advantages and outcomes. This review highlights the mechanism of these interactions and their importance in modifying the structural, functional, nutritional, and physiological attributes of animal- and plant-based proteins. Moreover, the potential applications of these protein–CGA conjugates/complexes are explored in various food systems, such as beverages, films and coatings, emulsion-based delivery systems, and so on. Overall, this literature review provides an in-depth overview of protein–CGA interactions, offering valuable insights for future research to develop novel protein-based food and non-food products with improved nutritional and functional characteristics.

Abstract

Background: Patients with cancer often have to make complex decisions about treatment, with the options varying in risk profiles and effects on survival and quality of life. Moreover, inefficient care paths make it hard for patients to participate in shared decision-making. Data-driven decision-support tools have the potential to empower patients, support personalized care, improve health outcomes and promote health equity. However, decision-support tools currently seldom consider quality of life or individual preferences, and their use in clinical practice remains limited, partly because they are not well integrated in patients’ care paths. Aim and objectives: The central aim of the 4D PICTURE project is to redesign patients’ care paths and develop and integrate evidence-based decision-support tools to improve decision-making processes in cancer care delivery. This article presents an overview of this international, interdisciplinary project. Design, methods and analysis: In co-creation with patients and other stakeholders, we will develop data-driven decision-support tools for patients with breast cancer, prostate cancer and melanoma. We will support treatment decisions by using large, high-quality datasets with state-of-the-art prognostic algorithms. We will further develop a conversation tool, the Metaphor Menu, using text mining combined with citizen science techniques and linguistics, incorporating large datasets of patient experiences, values and preferences. We will further develop a promising methodology, MetroMapping, to redesign care paths. We will evaluate MetroMapping and these integrated decision-support tools, and ensure their sustainability using the Nonadoption, Abandonment, Scale-Up, Spread, and Sustainability (NASSS) framework. We will explore the generalizability of MetroMapping and the decision-support tools for other types of cancer and across other EU member states. Ethics: Through an embedded ethics approach, we will address social and ethical issues. Discussion: Improved care paths integrating comprehensive decision-support tools have the potential to empower patients, their significant others and healthcare providers in decision-making and improve outcomes. This project will strengthen health care at the system level by improving its resilience and efficiency.

247. Cholinesterase Inhibitory Activity of Paeoniflorin: Molecular Dynamics Simulation, and In Vitro Mechanistic Investigation

Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a neurological disorder, is one of the major reasons for memory loss in the world. AD is characterized by a sequela of cognitive and functional decline caused by brain cell degeneration. Paeoniflorin is a monoterpenoid glycoside found in plants of the Paeoniaceae family, which are known for their medicinal properties including dementia. In this project, we report actions of paeoniflorin on the two related cholinesterases (ChE): acetylChE (AChE) and butyrylChE (BuChE). Paeoniflorin, in a dose-dependent (maximum inhibition at 1 mg/mL) manner, inhibited both AChE (0.06–1 mg/mL) and BuChE (0.007–1 mg/mL) enzymes with maximum inhibition of AChE enzyme at 90.3 ± 1.4%, while 99.4 ± 0.3% for BuChE enzyme. The EC50 value for the inhibitory effect of the compound against AChE was 0.52 mg/mL (0.18–1.52), while against BuChE was 0.13 mg/mL (0.08–0.21). The observed ani-ChE action was like an effect also mediated by the known ChE blocker physostigmine. Molecular interactions between paeoniflorin and both ChE enzymes were additionally sought via molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations for 100 ns, that showed paeoniflorin interacted with the active-site gorge of AChE and BuChE via hydrogen bonds and water bridging with the many amino acids of the AChE and BuChE enzymes. This study presents the ChE inhibitory potential of paeoniflorin against both AChE and BuChE enzymes. With this kind of inhibitory activity, the chemical can potentially increase ACh levels and may have use in the treatment of dementia of AD.

Abstract

In this research, we present an expanded hp-method for solving time delay optimal control (TDOC) problems, applicable to issues with both smooth and nonsmooth solutions. The method discretizes the time domain using an adaptive grid with unknown switch points. Subsequently, we use the operational integration matrix to approximate the problem’s state variable derivative. Next, we approximate the state and control variables using the Legendre–Gauss–Lobatto points and Legendre spectral collocation. This formulation transforms the original problem into a nonlinear programming problem, solvable using relevant techniques. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method, we solve numerical examples and compare the obtained results with those of several exiting methods.
