Abstract We revisit the magneto-hydrodynamics in (2+1) dimensions and confirm that it is consistent with the quasi-normal modes of the (3+1) dimensional dyonic black holes in the most general set-up with finite density, magnetic field and wave vector. We investigate all possible modes (sound, shear, diffusion, cyclotron etc.) and their interplay. For the magneto-hydrodynamics we perform a complete and detailed analysis correcting some prefactors in the literature, which is important for the comparison with quasi-normal modes. For the quasi-normal mode computations in holography we identify the independent fluctuation variables of the dyonic black holes, which is nontrivial at finite density and magnetic field. As an application of the quasi-normal modes of the dyonic black holes we investigate a transport property, the diffusion constant. We find that the diffusion constant at finite density and magnetic field saturates the lower bound at low temperature. We show that this bound can be understood from the pole-skipping point.

We propose the three-dimensional counterpart for Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled with CFT2 bath based on partial reduction. The three-dimensional counterpart is classical AdS gravity with a defect brane which has small fluctuation in transverse direction. We derive full Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity action by considering the transverse fluctuation as a dilaton field. We demonstrate that the fine-grained entropy computed from island formula precisely agrees with that computed from defect extremal surface. Our construction provides a Lorentzian higher dimensional counterpart for Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity glued to a bath and therefore offers a framework to study problems such as black hole information paradox. We reconsider the fermion spectral function in the presence of the Cooper pair condensation and identified the interaction type of complex scalar and fermion, which gives consistent results with the expected s-wave superconductor for the first time. We derive the matrix Riccati equation, which allows the precise calculation of the fermion spectral function. Apart from the gap structure, we studied the effect of the chemical potential and the density and compared it with the BCS theory. We found that two theories give similar results in small chemical potential but very different ones in the high-density case, which we attribute to the correlation effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We first point out that the Laia-Tong model realizes the Lieb lattice in the holographic setup. It generates a flat band of sharp particle spectrum together with a Dirac band of unparticle spectrum. We provided an understanding why the Laia-Tong model’s boundary condition generate a flat band and compared it with the mechanism of “compact localized orbits” in the lattice models to provide a physical reason why Lieb and Laia-Tong model should be identified based on the similarity in the flat band generation mechanism. We then construct a model which opens a gap to the Dirac band so that one can realize a well-separated flat band. We then study the phase transition between the gapped and gapless phases analytically. We also made methodological progress to find a few other possible quantizations and we express the Green functions in any quantization in terms of that in the standard quantization. Perfect tensors describe highly entangled quantum states that have attracted particular attention in the fields of quantum information theory and quantum gravity. In loop quantum gravity, the natural question arises whether SU(2) invariant tensors, which are fundamental ingredients of the basis states of spacetime, can also be perfect. In this work, we present a number of general constraints for the layout of such invariant perfect tensors (IPTs) and further describe a systematic and constructive approach to check the existence of an IPT of given valence. We apply our algorithm to show that no qubit encoding of valence 6 can be described by an IPT and close a gap to prove a no-go theorem for invariant perfect qubit encodings. We also provide two alternative proofs for the non-existence of 4-valent qubit IPTs which has been shown in [1-2]. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study a simple extension of the original Hartnoll, Herzog and Horowitz (HHH) holographic superfluid model with two nonlinear scalar self-interaction terms λ|ψ|4 and τ|ψ|6 in the probe limit. Depending on the value of λ and τ, this setup allows us to realize a large spectrum of holographic phase transitions which are 2nd, 1st and 0th order as well as the “cave of wind” phase transition. We speculate the landscape pictures and explore the near equilibrium dynamics of the lowest quasinormal modes (QNMs) across the whole phase diagram at both zero and finite wave-vector. We find that the zero wave-vector results of QNMs correctly present the stability of the system under homogeneous perturbations and perfectly agree with the landscape analysis of homogeneous configurations in canonical ensemble. The zero wave-vector results also show that a 0th order phase transition cannot occur since it always corresponds to a global instability of the whole system. The finite wave-vector results show that under inhomogeneous perturbations, the unstable region is larger than that under only homogeneous perturbations, and the new boundary of instability match with the turning point of condensate curve in grand canonical ensemble, indicating a new explanation from the subsystem point of view. Within the framework of holography, the Einstein-Maxwell action with Dirichlet boundary conditions corresponds to a dual conformal field theory in presence of an external gauge field. Nevertheless, in many real-world applications, e.g., magnetohydrodynamics, plasma physics, superconductors, etc. dynamical gauge fields and Coulomb interactions are fundamental. In this work, we consider bottom-up holographic models at finite magnetic field and (free) charge density in presence of dynamical boundary gauge fields which are introduced using mixed boundary conditions. We numerically study the spectrum of the lowest quasi-normal modes and successfully compare the obtained results to magnetohydrodynamics theory in 2 + 1 dimensions. Surprisingly, as far as the electromagnetic coupling is small enough, we find perfect agreement even in the large magnetic field limit. Our results prove that a holographic description of magnetohydrodynamics does not necessarily need higher-form bulk fields but can be consistently derived using mixed boundary conditions for standard gauge fields. We study the relationship between many-body quantum chaos and energy dynamics in holographic quantum field theory states dual to the simply-spinning Myers-Perry-AdS5 black hole. The enhanced symmetry of such black holes allows us to provide a thorough examination of the phenomenon of pole-skipping, that is significantly simpler than a previous analysis of quantum field theory states dual to the Kerr-AdS4 solution. In particular we give a general proof of pole-skipping in the retarded energy density Green’s function of the dual quantum field theory whenever the spatial profile of energy fluctuations satisfies the shockwave equation governing the form of the OTOC. Furthermore, in the large black hole limit we are able to obtain a simple analytic expression for the OTOC for operator configurations on Hopf circles, and demonstrate that the associated Lyapunov exponent and butterfly velocity are robustly related to the locations of a family of pole-skipping points in the energy response. Finally, we note that in contrast to previous studies, our results are valid for any value of rotation and we are able to numerically demonstrate that the dispersion relations of sound modes in the energy response explicitly pass through our pole-skipping locations. We study N = 2 supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with com- plex fermions at non-zero background charge. Motivated by multi-charge supersymmetric black holes, we propose a new N = 2 SYK model with multiple U(1) symmetries, integer charges, and a non-vanishing supersymmetric index, realizing features not present in known SYK models. In both models, a conformal solution with a super-Schwarzian mode emerges at low temperatures, signalling the appearance of nearly AdS2/BPS physics. However, in contrast to complex SYK, the fermion scaling dimension depends on the background charge in the conformal limit. For a critical charge, we find a high to low entropy phase transition in which the conformal solution ceases to be valid. This transition has a simple interpretation– the fermion scaling dimension violates the unitarity bound. We offer some comments on a holographic interpretation for supersymmetric black holes. In this work, we study the real-time dynamics of the charged hairy black hole with the time-dependent source of scalar field in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The numerical results reveal a novel descalarization mechanism. In order to obtain the hairy black hole as the initial data for the quench process, we first analyze the quasi-normal modes of the massive complex scalar field on the Reissner-Nordström anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole background. We find the dominant unstable modes for large and small RN-AdS black holes come from the zero-damped modes and AdS modes, respectively. Then, the unstable RN-AdS black holes are perturbed to trigger the transition to hairy black holes. With the hairy black hole in hand, we specify a time dependent scalar source for the system. As the source is turned on, the electric charge, energy and scalar condensation of the system start to oscillate with the entropy increasing monotonically. Finally, with the decay of the scalar source, the system gradually settles down to a new state. Interestingly, the final state of the evolution could be a hairy black hole with less scalar condensation, a RN-AdS black hole or a Schwarzschild-AdS black hole, which depends on the quench strength. However, as long as the quench strength is large enough, the system always loses all the electric charge and converges to the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Motivated by the results of Dynamical Mean Field Theory, we study the two-point function of fermions moving in a charged black brane background in AdSd+1 in the limit of large d. We observe the emergence of a locally critical form of the fermion self-energy, with a strongly constrained range of possible scaling behaviors at large d. Novelties compared to the analysis in d = 3, 4 include an enlarged regime of temperatures where the results apply, and the analytical tractability of the calculations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider anisotropic black holes in the context of holographic renormalization group (RG) flows. We construct an a-function that is stationary at the boundary and the horizon and prove that it is also monotonic in both the exterior and the interior of the black hole. In spite of the reduced symmetry, we find that the “radial” null energy condition is sufficient to ensure the existence of this monotonic a-function. After constructing the a-function, we explore a holographic anisotropic p-wave superfluid state as a concrete example and numerical testing grounds. In doing so, we find that the a-function exhibits nontrivial oscillations in the trans-IR regime while preserving monotonicity. We find evidence that such oscillations appear to drive the trans-IR flow into nontrivial fixed points. We conclude by briefly discussing how our work fits into both the broader program of holographic RG flow and quantum information approaches to probing the black hole interior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A number of recent works have argued that quantum complexity, a well-known concept in computer science that has re-emerged recently in the context of the physics of black holes, may be used as an efficient probe of novel phenomena such as quantum chaos and even quantum phase transitions. In this article, we provide further support for the latter, using a 1-dimensional p-wave superconductor — the Kitaev chain — as a prototype of a system displaying a topological phase transition. The Hamiltonian of the Kitaev chain manifests two gapped phases of matter with fermion parity symmetry; a trivial strongly-coupled phase and a topologically non-trivial, weakly-coupled phase with Majorana zero-modes. We show that Krylov-complexity (or, more precisely, the associated spread-complexity) is able to distinguish between the two and provides a diagnostic of the quantum critical point that separates them. We also comment on some possible ambiguity in the existing literature on the sensitivity of different measures of complexity to topological phase transitions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The celebrated holographic entanglement entropy triggered investigations on the connections between quantum information theory and quantum gravity. An important achievement is that we have gained more insights into the quantum states. It allows us to diagnose whether a given quantum state is a holographic state, a state whose bulk dual admits semiclassical geometrical description. The effective tool of this kind of diagnosis is holographic entropy cone (HEC), an entropy space bounded by holographic entropy inequalities allowed by the theory. To fix the HEC and to prove a given holographic entropy inequality, a proof-by-contraction technique has been developed. This method heavily depends on a contraction map f, which is very difficult to construct especially for more-region (n ≥ 4) cases. In this work, we develop a general and effective rule to rule out most of the cases such that f can be obtained in a relatively simple way. In addition, we extend the whole framework to relative homologous entropy, a generalization of holographic entanglement entropy that is suitable for characterizing the entanglement of mixed states.

Abstract A supersolid is a system that presents long-range order and shear rigidity as a solid but which also supports a non-dissipative superflow as a superfluid. From an effective perspective, supersolids are identified with phases of matter that break spontaneously translational invariance together with a global U(1) symmetry. By using this symmetry prescription, we build a holographic bottom-up model for supersolids and we start the investigation of its thermodynamic and mechanical properties. More precisely, we analyze the behaviour of the critical temperature, the condensate, the shear modulus and the viscosity across all the phase diagram. Finally, we successfully compare our results with a simple Ginzburg-Landau model for supersolids deriving some universal physical correlations between the observables mentioned above.

Abstract Within the framework of AdS/CFT duality, excited states of the conformal field living at the global AdS boundary of a four-dimensional spacetime Einstein gravity are investigated analytically in the probe limit where the field equations are linearized. At asymptotically large values, the threshold chemical potential for the appearance of excited condensate states are discrete, equal spacing, with the gap approaches zero logarithmically in the limit T → 0. Remarkably, numerical results show that, this behavior applies even for states as low as for the first or the second excited state of the condensate. This is especially significant on the liquid side of the black hole van der Waals-like phase transition (small or zero topological charge) where there seems to be no gap between the ground state and the first excited state at zero temperature. We postulate that, at the exact limit T = 0 where the gap is zero, the spectrum of threshold chemical potentials becomes continuous, all excited states of the condensate are activated above a finite chemical potential, suggesting a new quantum phase transition as a function of the chemical potential. Previous studies have largely missed this continuous spectrum of excited states in the T → 0 limit. This fact should be taken into account carefully in AdS/CFT duality studies.

Abstract We investigate the properties of the holographic entanglement entropy of the systems in which the U(1) or the translational symmetry is broken spontaneously. For this purpose, we define the entanglement density of the strip-subsystems and examine both the first law of entanglement entropy (FLEE) and the area theorem. We classify the conditions that FLEE and/or the area theorem obey and show that such a classification may be useful for characterizing the systems. We also find universalities from both FLEE and the area theorem. In the spontaneous symmetry breaking case, FLEE is always obeyed regardless of the type of symmetry: U(1) or translation. For the translational symmetry, the area theorem is always violated when the symmetry is weakly broken, independent of the symmetry breaking patterns (explicit or spontaneous). We also argue that the log contribution of the entanglement entropy from the Goldstone mode may not appear in the strongly coupled systems.

Abstract We analyze the error correcting properties of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, with errors that correspond to erasures of subsets of fermions. We study the limit where the number of fermions erased is large but small compared to the total number of fermions. We compute the price of the quantum error correcting code, defined as the number of physical qubits needed to reconstruct whether a given operator has been acted upon the thermal state or not. By thinking about reconstruction via quantum teleportation, we argue for a bound that relates the price to the ordinary operator size in systems that display so-called detailed size winding [1]. We then find that in SYK the price roughly saturates this bound. Computing the price requires computing modular flowed correlators with respect to the density matrix associated to a subset of fermions. We offer an interpretation of these correlators as probing a quantum extremal surface in the AdS dual of SYK. In the large N limit, the operator algebras associated to subsets of fermions in SYK satisfy half-sided modular inclusion, which is indicative of an emergent Type III1 von Neumann algebra. We discuss the relationship between the emergent algebra of half-sided modular inclusions and bulk symmetry generators.

Abstract In semi-classical systems, the exponential growth of the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) is believed to be the hallmark of quantum chaos. However, on several occasions, it has been argued that, even in integrable systems, OTOC can grow exponentially due to the presence of unstable saddle points in the phase space. In this work, we probe such an integrable system exhibiting saddle-dominated scrambling through Krylov complexity and the associated Lanczos coefficients. In the realm of the universal operator growth hypothesis, we demonstrate that the Lanczos coefficients follow the linear growth, which ensures the exponential behavior of Krylov complexity at early times. The linear growth arises entirely due to the saddle, which dominates other phase-space points even away from itself. Our results reveal that the exponential growth of Krylov complexity can be observed in integrable systems with saddle-dominated scrambling and thus need not be associated with the presence of chaos.

Abstract We study a strongly interacting, fermionic fluid in the presence of an applied magnetic field using a holographic framework. At low temperatures, translation symmetry is spontaneously broken and the resulting phase is a striped Hall fluid. Due to the magnetic field, an electric field applied parallel to the stripes causes the stripes to slide, a phenomenon we coin “Hall sliding.” We also investigate the magneto-transport of the system in the presence of an explicit translation symmetry-breaking lattice which pins the stripes. Electrical properties are well represented by a hydrodynamical model, which gives us further insight into particle-like cyclotron and pseudo-Goldstone excitations we observe. The DC conductivities obey a novel semi-circle law, which we derive analytically in the translationally invariant ground state at low temperature.

Abstract We study the condensation of a charged scalar field in a (3 + 1)-dimensional asymptotically AdS background in the context of Einsteinian cubic gravity, featuring a holographic superconductor with higher curvature corrections corresponding to a CFT with a non-vanishing value of the stress tensor three-point function t 4. As it was previously noticed for higher dimensional Gauss-Bonnet theory, we observe that the critical temperature of the superconducting phase transition is lowered as the higher curvature coupling grows.

Abstract Partial reduction is a Karch-Randall reduction for only part of the AdS region between finite tension brane and zero tension brane. This is interesting in AdS/BCFT where the AdS bulk contains a defect brane. We employ partial reduction for a AdS bulk with a brane evolving as a 2d Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology and demonstrate the equivalence between defect extremal surface and island formula for a large subregion fine grained entropy in boundary CFT. We then move to higher dimensions and demonstrate the existence of 4d massless graviton on AdS4 brane in partial reduction. We also propose a partial reduction for a 4d FRW cosmology at defect brane and obtain the Newton constant by computing boundary entropy.

Abstract We investigate the formation of topological defects in the course of a dynamical phase transition with different boundary conditions in a ring from AdS/CFT correspondence. According to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, quenching the system across the critical point to symmetry-breaking phase will result in topological defects — winding numbers — in a compact ring. By setting two different boundary conditions, i.e., Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions for the spatial component of the gauge fields in the AdS boundary, we achieve the holographic superfluid and holographic superconductor models, respectively. In the final equilibrium state, different configurations of the order parameter phases for these two models indicate a persistent superflow in the holographic superfluid, however, the holographic superconductor lacks this superflow due to the existence of local gauge fields. The two-point correlation functions of the order parameter also behave differently. In particular, for holographic superfluid the correlation function is a cosine function depending on the winding number. The correlation function for the holographic superconductor, however, decays rapidly at short distances and vanishes at long distance, due to the random localities of the gauge fields. These results are consistent with our theoretical analysis.

Abstract We present a gravity dual of local operator quench in a two-dimensional CFT with conformal boundaries. This is given by a massive excitation in a three-dimensional AdS space with the end of the world brane (EOW brane). Due to the gravitational backreaction, the EOW brane gets deformed in a nontrivial way. We show that the energy-momentum tensor and entanglement entropy computed from the gravity dual and from the BCFT in the large c limit match perfectly. Interestingly, this comparison avoids the folding of the EOW brane in an elegant way.

Abstract In this paper, we revisit a “relatively local” model proposed in [1], where locality and dimensionality of space only emerges from the entanglement structure of the state the system is in. Various quantities such as butterfly velocity/entanglement speed can be defined similarly, at least in the regime where locality is well defined and a light cone structure emerges in the correlation between sites. We find that the relations observed between them in local models [2] are not respected. In particular, we conjecture that the hierarchy of the interaction over different distances provides different “layers” of light cones. When long range interactions are sufficiently suppressed, the effective light cones are dominated by linear behaviour with little remnant of non-locality. This could potentially be used as a physical smoking gun for emergent locality in non-local models.

Abstract The recent study of holographic superconductors has shown the emergence of a Kasner universe behind the event horizon. This paper serves to add to the discussion by introducing two modifications to the holographic superconductor model: an axion field term and an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) coupling term. We first discuss the effect the modification parameters have on the condensate then explore the black hole interior dynamics. Features previously identified in the interior are found in the model presented, including the collapse of the Einstein-Rosen bridge, Josephson oscillations and Kasner inversions/transitions. However, we find that by increasing the EMS coupling parameter, the collapse does not occur near the axion-Reissner-Nordström horizon and the oscillations are no longer present; the geometry entering into a Kasner regime after a large-r collapse instead.

Abstract In this study, we analyze the dynamical stability of the D3-D7 model dual to a holographic conductor with a constant current under an external electric field. We particularly focus on the stability around the parameter region where the multivalued relation between the external electric field and the current is shown due to nonlinear conductivity. The dynamical stability of the states can be analyzed by considering linear perturbations in the background states and computing the quasinormal modes. In the multivalued region, we find that the states in one branch with a low electric current can be dynamically unstable. The turning point in the J–E characteristic coincides with the stability switching. Further, we also find that the perturbations around the unstable states can become stable with finite wavenumber. In other words, the perturbations in the background states become static at a critical wavenumber, implying the existence of inhomogeneous steady states with current filaments.

Abstract In this paper, we make a systematical and in-depth exploration on the phase structure and the behaviors of butterfly velocity in an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axions (EMDA) model. Depending on the model parameter, there are two kinds of mechanisms driving quantum phase transition (QPT) in this model. One is the infrared (IR) geometry to be renormalization group (RG) unstable, and the other is the strength of lattice deformation leading to some kind of bifurcating solution. We also find a novel QPT in the metal phases. The study on the behavior of the butterfly velocity crossing QPT indicates that the butterfly velocity or its first derivative exhibiting local extreme depends on the QPT mechanism. Further, the scaling behaviors of the butterfly velocity in the zero-temperature limit confirm that different phases are controlled by different IR geometries. Therefore, the butterfly velocity is a good probe to QPT and it also provides a possible way to study QPT beyond holography.

Abstract Recent advances in AdS/CFT holography have suggested that the near-horizon dynamics of black holes can be described by random matrix systems. We study how the energy spectrum of a system with a generic random Hamiltonian matrix affects its early and late time thermalization behaviour using the spectral form factor (which captures the time-dependence of two-point correlation functions). We introduce a simple statistical framework for generating random spectra in terms of the nearest neighbor spacing statistics of energy eigenvalues, enabling us to compute the averaged spectral form factor in a closed form. This helps to easily illustrate how the spectral form factor changes with different choices of nearest neighbor statistics ranging from the Poisson to Wigner surmise statistics. We suggest that it is possible to have late time oscillations in random matrix models involving β-ensembles (generalizing classical Gaussian ensembles). We also study the form factor of randomly coupled oscillator systems and show that at weak coupling, such systems exhibit regular decaying oscillations in the spectral form factor making them interesting toy models for gravitational wave echoes. We speculate on the holographic interpretation of a system of coupled oscillators, and suggest that they describe the thermalization behaviour of a black hole geometry with a membrane that cuts off the geometry at the stretched horizon.

Abstract We study the competition between the p-wave and the p+ip superfluid solutions in a holographic model with applied magnetic field intensity H. We find that when H is turned on, both the grand potential and the critical temperature of the p+ip solution are shifted, while the p-wave solution is only slightly affected. Combining the effect of H and back reaction parameter b, we build H − T phase diagrams with a slit region of p+ip phase. The zero (or finite) value of H at the starting point of the slit region is related to second (or first) order of the p-wave phase transition at zero magnetic intensity, which should be universal in systems with degenerate critical points (spinodal points) at zero magnetic field.

Abstract In this work, we compute the entanglement entropy in continuous icMERA tensor networks for large N models at strong coupling. Our results show that the 1/N quantum corrections to the Fisher information metric (interpreted as a local bond dimension of the tensor network) in an icMERA circuit, are related to quantum corrections to the minimal area surface in the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. Upon picking two different non-Gaussian entanglers to build the icMERA circuit, the results for the entanglement entropy only differ at subleading orders in 1/G N , i.e., at the structure of the quantum corrections in the bulk. The fact that the large N part of the entropy can be always related to the leading area term of the holographic calculation is very suggestive. These results, constitute the first tensor network calculations at large N and strong coupling simultaneously, pushing the field of tensor network descriptions of the emergence of dual spacetime geometries from the structure of entanglement in quantum field theory.

Abstract We investigate the low-energy dynamics of systems with pseudo-spontaneously broken U(1) symmetry and Goldstone phase relaxation. We construct a hydrodynamic framework which is able to capture these, in principle independent, effects. We consider two generalisations of the standard holographic superfluid model by adding an explicit breaking of the U(1) symmetry by either sourcing the charged bulk scalar or by introducing an explicit mass term for the bulk gauge field. We find agreement between the hydrodynamic dispersion relations and the quasi-normal modes of both holographic models. We verify that phase relaxation arises only due to the breaking of the inherent Goldstone shift symmetry. The interplay of a weak explicit breaking of the U(1) and phase relaxation renders the DC electric conductivity finite but does not result in a Drude-like peak. In this scenario we show the validity of a universal relation, found in the context of translational symmetry breaking, between the phase relaxation rate, the mass of the pseudo-Goldstone and the Goldstone diffusivity.

Abstract The final (close to the singularity) dynamical behavior of the metric inside black holes with massive charged scalar or vector hair is analyzed for general anisotropic and inhomogeneous initial conditions. These solutions are relevant to a holographic realization of superconductivity. It is shown that the dynamics falls within the scope of the “cosmological billiard” description and that in both cases, the corresponding hyperbolic billiard region has infinite volume so that the system ultimately settles down to a final Kasner regime. For massive vector hair, the conclusion holds because the longitudinal mode plays the same role as a scalar field. There exists, however, a measure-zero subset of solutions characterized by vanishing longitudinal modes that exhibit a chaotic behavior with an infinite number of BKL oscillations as one goes to the singularity.

Abstract In this paper, we study the fine structure of entanglement in holographic two-dimensional boundary conformal field theories (BCFT) in terms of the spatially resolved quasilocal extension of entanglement entropy — entanglement contour. We find that the boundary induces discontinuities in the contour revealing hidden localization-delocalization patterns of the entanglement degrees of freedom. Moreover, we observe the formation of “islands” where the entanglement contour vanishes identically implying that these regions do not contribute to the entanglement at all. We argue that these phenomena are the manifestation of the entanglement islands recently discussed in the literature. We apply the entanglement contour proposal to the recently discussed BCFT black hole models reproducing the Page curve — moving mirror model and the pair of BCFT in the thermofield double state. From the viewpoint of entanglement contour, the Page curve also carries the imprint of strong delocalization caused by dynamical entanglement islands.

Abstract Homes’ law, ρ s = Cσ DC T c , is a universal relation of superconductors between the superfluid density ρ s at zero temperature, the critical temperature T c and the electric DC conductivity σ DC at T c . Experimentally, Homes’ law is observed in high T c superconductors with linear-T resistivity in the normal phase, giving a material independent universal constant C. By using holographic models related to the Gubser-Rocha model, we investigate how Homes’ law can be realized together with linear-T resistivity in the presence of momentum relaxation. We find that strong momentum relaxation plays an important role to exhibit Homes’ law with linear-T resistivity.

Abstract We consider the theory of N free Dirac fermions with a uniformly winding mass, me iqx , in two spacetime dimensions. This theory (which describes for instance a superconducting current in an N-channel wire) has been proposed to have a higher-spin gravity with scalar matter as the large-N dual. To order m 2, however, thermodynamic quantities in it can be computed using standard general relativity instead. Here, we consider the question if the same is true for the entanglement entropy (EE). By comparing results obtained on two sides of the duality, we find that general relativity indeed accounts correctly for the EE of an interval to order m 2 (and all orders in q).

Abstract We investigate the breakdown of magneto-hydrodynamics at low temperature (T) with black holes whose extremal geometry is AdS2×R2. The breakdown is identified by the equilibration scales (ω eq , k eq) defined as the collision point between the diffusive hydrodynamic mode and the longest-lived non-hydrodynamic mode. We show (ω eq , k eq) at low T is determined by the diffusion constant D and the scaling dimension ∆(0) of an infra-red operator: ω eq = 2πT∆(0), k eq 2 $$ {k}_{\mathrm{eq}}^2 $$ = ω eq /D, where ∆(0) = 1 in the presence of magnetic fields. For the purpose of comparison, we have analytically shown ∆(0) = 2 for the axion model independent of the translational symmetry breaking pattern (explicit or spontaneous), which is complementary to previous numerical results. Our results support the conjectured universal upper bound of the energy diffusion D ≤ ω eq / k eq 2 ≔ v eq 2 τ eq $$ D\le {\omega}_{\mathrm{eq}}/{k}_{\mathrm{eq}}^2:= {v}_{\mathrm{eq}}^2{\tau}_{\mathrm{eq}} $$ where v eq := ω eq /k eq and τ eq := ω eq − 1 $$ {\omega}_{\mathrm{eq}}^{-1} $$ are the velocity and the timescale associated to equilibration, implying that the breakdown of hydrodynamics sets the upper bound of the diffusion constant D at low T.

Abstract Holevo information is an upper bound for the accessible classical information of an ensemble of quantum states. In this work, we use Holevo information to investigate the ensemble theory interpretation of quantum gravity. We study the Holevo information in random tensor network states, where the random parameters are the random tensors at each vertex. Based on the results in random tensor network models, we propose a conjecture on the holographic bulk formula of the Holevo information in the gravity case. As concrete examples of holographic systems, we compute the Holevo information in the ensemble of thermal states and thermo-field double states in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. The results are consistent with our conjecture.

Abstract We study the anisotropic properties of dynamical quantities: direct current (DC) conductivity, butterfly velocity, and charge diffusion. The anisotropy plays a crucial role in determining the phase structure of the two-lattice system. Even a small deviation from isotropy can lead to distinct phase structures, as well as the IR fixed points of our holographic systems. In particular, for anisotropic cases, the most important property is that the IR fixed point can be non-AdS2 × ℝ2 even for metallic phases. As that of a one-lattice system, the butterfly velocity and the charge diffusion can also diagnose the quantum phase transition (QPT) in this two-dimensional anisotropic latticed system.

Abstract Haar integrals over the unitary group contain subleading terms that are needed for unitarity. We study analogous effects in the time evolution operators of JT gravity and Brownian SYK. In JT gravity with bulk matter we find an explanation for the first sub-leading terms, and in Brownian SYK we find configurations that can explain the full series. An important role is played by slightly off-shell modes that are exponentially amplified by chaos.

Abstract We study the connection between many-body quantum chaos and energy dynamics for the holographic theory dual to the Kerr-AdS black hole. In particular, we determine a partial differential equation governing the angular profile of gravitational shock waves that are relevant for the computation of out-of-time ordered correlation functions (OTOCs). Further we show that this shock wave profile is directly related to the behaviour of energy fluctuations in the boundary theory. In particular, we demonstrate using the Teukolsky formalism that at complex frequency ω ∗ = i2πT there exists an extra ingoing solution to the linearised Einstein equations whenever the angular profile of metric perturbations near the horizon satisfies this shock wave equation. As a result, for metric perturbations with such temporal and angular profiles we find that the energy density response of the boundary theory exhibit the signatures of “pole-skipping” — namely, it is undefined, but exhibits a collective mode upon a parametrically small deformation of the profile. Additionally, we provide an explicit computation of the OTOC in the equatorial plane for slowly rotating large black holes, and show that its form can be used to obtain constraints on the dispersion relations of collective modes in the dual CFT.

Abstract Defect extremal surface is defined by extremizing the Ryu-Takayanagi formula corrected by the quantum defect theory. This is interesting when the AdS bulk contains a defect brane (or string). We introduce a defect extremal surface formula for reflected entropy, which is a mixed state generalization of entanglement entropy measure. Based on a decomposition procedure of an AdS bulk with a brane, we demonstrate the equivalence between defect extremal surface formula and island formula for reflected entropy in AdS3/BCFT2. We also compute the evolution of reflected entropy in evaporating black hole model and find that defect extremal surface formula agrees with island formula.

Abstract We study the breakdown of diffusive hydrodynamics in holographic systems dual to neutral dilatonic black holes with extremal near horizon geometries conformal to AdS2 × R2. We find that at low temperatures by tuning the effective gauge coupling constant in the infra-red, the lowest non-hydrodynamic mode, which collides with the charge diffusive mode and sets the scales at which diffusive hydrodynamics breaks down, could be either an infra-red mode or a slow mode, resulting in different scaling behaviors of the local equilibrium scales. We confirm that the upper bound for the charge diffusion constant is always satisfied using the velocity and timescale of local equilibration from the pole collision. We also examine the breakdown of hydrodynamics at general temperature and find that the convergence radius has nontrivial dependence on temperature, in addition to the effective gauge coupling constant.

Abstract We discuss the physics of momentum diffusion in a charged plasma. Following the holographic strategy outlined in [1] we construct an open effective field theory for the low-lying modes of the conserved currents. The charged plasma is modeled holographically in terms of a Reissner-Nordström-AdS d+1 black hole. We analyze graviton and photon fluctuations about this background, decoupling in the process the long-lived momentum diffusion mode from the short-lived charged transport mode. Furthermore, as in the aforementioned reference, we argue that the dynamics of these modes are captured by a set of designer scalars in the background geometry. These scalars have their gravitational coupling modulated by an auxiliary dilaton with long-lived modes being weakly coupled near the spacetime asymptopia. Aided by these observations, we obtain the quadratic effective action that governs the fluctuating hydrodynamics of the charge current and stress tensor, reproducing in the process transport data computed previously. We also point out an interesting length scale lying between the inner and outer horizon radii of the charged black hole associated with Ohmic conductivity.

Inspired by the universal operator growth hypothesis, we extend the formalism of Krylov construction in dissipative open quantum systems connected to a Markovian bath. Our construction is based upon the modification of the Liouvillian superoperator by the appropriate Lindbladian, thereby following the vectorized Lanczos algorithm and the Arnoldi iteration. This is well justified due to the incorporation of non-Hermitian effects due to the environment. We study the growth of Lanczos coefficients in the transverse field Ising model (integrable and chaotic limits) for boundary amplitude damping and bulk dephasing. Although the direct implementation of the Lanczos algorithm fails to give physically meaningful results, the Arnoldi iteration retains the generic nature of the integrability and chaos as well as the signature of non-Hermiticity through separate sets of coefficients (Arnoldi coefficients) even after including the dissipative environment. Our results suggest that the Arnoldi iteration is meaningful and more appropriate in dealing with open systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the planar anti-de Sitter black hole in the p-wave holographic superconductor model. We identify a critical coupling value which determines the type of phase transition. Beyond the horizon, at specific temperatures flat spacetime emerges. Numerical analysis close to these temperatures demonstrates the appearance of a large number of alternating Kasner epochs. The Rényi entropies as a generalization of the entanglement entropy imply much more information. We analytically calculate the Rényi entropies (with a spherical entangling surface) by means of a class of neutral hyperbolic black holes with scalar hair as a one-parameter generalization of the MTZ black hole. The zeroth-order and third-order phase transitions of black holes lead to discontinuity of the Rényi entropies and their second derivatives, respectively. From the Rényi entropies that are analytic at n = ∞, we can express the entanglement spectrum as an infinite sum in terms of the Bell polynomials. We show that the analytic treatment is in agreement with numerical calculations for the low-lying entanglement spectrum in a wide range of parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the nearly critical behaviour of holographic superfluids at finite temperature and chemical potential in their probe limit. This allows us to examine the coupled dynamics of the full complex order parameter with the charge density of the system. We derive an effective theory for the long wavelength limit of the gapless and pseudo-gapped modes by using analytic techniques in the bulk. We match our construction with Model F in the classification of Hohenberg and Halperin and compute the complex dissipative kinetic transport coefficient in terms of thermodynamics and black hole horizon data. We carry out an analysis of the corresponding modes and argue that at finite density the dispersion relations are discontinuous between the normal and the broken phase. We study critical phenomena at a tricritical point associated with a chiral phase transition which emerges in the D3/D7 model in the presence of a finite baryon number density and an external magnetic field. We numerically determine critical exponents related to the thermodynamic quantities and correlation functions. We find that the values of the critical exponents agree with the mean-field values. The scaling relations between the critical exponents are satisfied, implying that the scaling hypothesis for the free energy and the correlation functions hold. Our results indicate that the critical phenomena at the tricritical point in the D3/D7 model are well described by the conventional Landau theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We derive the leading dissipative corrections of holographic superfluids at finite temperature and chemical potential by employing our recently developed techniques to study dissipative effects in the hydrodynamic limit of holographic theories. As part of our results, we express the incoherent conductivity, the shear and the three bulk viscosities in terms of thermodynamics and the black hole horizon data of the dual bulk geometries.
