Abstract

Electrons are accelerated to nonthermal energies at shocks in space and astrophysical environments. While shock drift acceleration (SDA) has been considered a key process of electron acceleration at Earth?s bow shock, it has also been recognized that SDA needs to be combined with an additional stochastic process to explain the observed power-law energy spectra. Abstract

We present a comprehensive revisited experimental high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption spectrum of ammonia, NH, covering for the first time the full 5.4-10.8 eV energy-range, with absolute cross sections determined. The calculations on the vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths were performed using the equation-of-motion coupled cluster method restricted to single and double excitation levels and used to help reanalyze the observed Rydberg structures in the photoabsorption spectrum. The VUV spectrum reveals several new features that are not previously reported in the literature, with particular reference to the vibrational progressions of the (D'1EX'1A1′), the (F'1EX'1A1′), and the (G'1A2X'1A1′) absorption bands. In addition, new Rydberg members have been identified in nda11a2″D'′′1A2X'1A1′, where n > 3 has not been reported before as well as in nde1a2″F'1EX'1A1′ and in nsa1 1a2″G'1A2X'1A1′. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of ammonia in the Earth's atmosphere (0-50 km).

211. The SMART Theory and Modeling Team: An Integrated Element of Mission Development and Science Analysis

Abstract

When targeting physical understanding of space plasmas, our focus is gradually shifting away from discovery-type investigations to missions and studies that address our basic understanding of processes we know to be important. For these studies, theory and models provide physical predictions that need to be verified or falsified by empirical evidence. Within this paradigm, a tight integration between theory, modeling, and space flight mission design and execution is essential. NASA's Magnetospheric MultiScale (MMS) mission is a pathfinder in this new era of space research. The prime objective of MMS is to understand magnetic reconnection, arguably the most fundamental of plasma processes. In particular, MMS targets the microphysical processes, which permit magnetic reconnection to operate in the collisionless plasmas that permeate space and astrophysical systems. More specifically, MMS will provide closure to such elemental questions as how particles become demagnetized in the reconnection diffusion region, which effects determine the reconnection rate, and how reconnection is coupled to environmental conditions such as magnetic shear angles. Solutions to these problems have remained elusive in past and present spacecraft missions primarily due to instrumental limitations - yet they are fundamental to the large-scale dynamics of collisionless plasmas. Owing to the lack of measurements, most of our present knowledge of these processes is based on results from modern theory and modeling studies of the reconnection process. Proper design and execution of a mission targeting magnetic reconnection should include this knowledge and have to ensure that all relevant scales and effects can be resolved by mission measurements. The SMART mission has responded to this need through a tight integration between instrument and theory and modeling teams. Input from theory and modeling is fed into all aspects of science mission design, and theory and modeling activities are tailored to SMART needs during mission development and science analysis. In this presentation, we will present an overview of SMART theory and modeling team activities. In particular, we will provide examples of science objectives derived from state-of-the art models, and of recent research results that continue to be utilized in SMART mission development.

Abstract

Absolute differential cross sections (DCSs) for electron interaction with BF3 molecules have been measured in the impact energy range of 1.5-200 eV and recorded over a scattering angle range of 15°-150°. These angular distributions have been normalized by reference to the elastic DCSs of the He atom and integrated by employing a modified phase shift analysis procedure to generate integral cross sections (ICSs) and momentum transfer cross sections (MTCSs). The calculations of DCSs and ICSs have been carried out using an independent atom model under the screening corrected additivity rule (IAM-SCAR). The present elastic DCSs have been found to agree well with the results of IAM-SCAR calculation above 20 eV, and also with a recent Schwinger multichannel calculation below 30 eV. Furthermore, in the comparison with the XF3 (X = B, C, N, and CH) molecules, the elastic DCSs reveal a similar angular distribution which are approximately equal in magnitude from 30 to 200 eV. This feature suggests that the elastic scattering is dominated virtually by the 3-outer fluorine atoms surrounding the XF3 molecules. The vibrational DCSs have also been obtained in the energy range of 1.5-15 eV and vibrational analysis based on the angular correlation theory has been carried out to explain the nature of the shape resonances. Limited experiments on vibrational inelastic scattering confirmed the existence of a shape resonance with a peak at 3.8 eV, which is also observed in the vibrational ICS. Finally, the estimated elastic ICSs, MTCSs, as well as total cross sections are compared with the previous cross section data available. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The electronic state spectroscopy of carbonyl sulphide, COS, has been investigated using high resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy in the energy range of 4.0-10.8 eV. The spectrum reveals several new features not previously reported in the literature. Vibronic structure has been observed, notably in the low energy absorption dipole forbidden band assigned to the (4π←3π) (¹Δ←¹Σ+) transition, with a new weak transition assigned to (¹Σ-←¹Σ+) reported here for the first time. The absolute optical oscillator strengths are determined for ground state to ¹Σ+ and ¹π transitions. Based on our recent measurements of differential cross sections for the optically allowed (¹Σ+ and ¹π) transitions of COS by electron impact, the optical oscillator strength f0 value and integral cross sections (ICSs) are derived by applying a generalized oscillator strength analysis. Subsequently, ICSs predicted by the scaling are confirmed down to 60 eV in the intermediate energy region. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of carbonyl sulphide in the upper stratosphere (20-50 km). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

As a sequel paper to our study of the elastic scattering for electron collisions with phosphorus trifluoride, PF₃ molecules, we report absolute inelastic differential and integral cross sections (DCS and ICS) of vibrational excitations for the compound fundamental vibrational modes v₁₃ (v₁ + v₃), v₂₄ (v₂ + v₄), and their sum in the impact energy range of 2.0-10 eV and over a scattering angle range of 20⁰ -130⁰. The measured angular distributions of scattered electron intensities for the present inelastic scattering are normalized to the elastic peak intensity corresponding to the DCSs of He. These vibrational excitation measurements demonstrate the presence of resonances around 2 eV and also around 6-10 eV. In addition, a generalized oscillator strength analysis is applied to derive oscillator strength f₀-values and (unscaled Born) ICSs from the corresponding DCSs measured for the low-lying optically allowed 8a₁ → 7e (σ*)excitation band, which is assigned as the Jahn-Teller splitting and 8a₁⁻¹→ 4s Rydberg transition at impact energies of 100, 200, and 300 eV, over a scattering angle range of 1.0⁰ -15⁰. The f₀-values obtained in the present study are compared with the results of previous photoabsorption and pseudo-optical measurements. The unscaled Born ICSs are compared with the binary-encounter f-scaled Born ICSs estimated over a wide impact energy region from the excitation thresholds.

Abstract

This study investigated the parasites fauna of four freshwater ornamental fish species in aquarium shops of Macapá, Amapá State, in addition to survey the commercialized fish species and sanitary conditions of aquarium shops. Different native and non-native ornamental fish species were found in aquarium shops, mainly Poecilidae. We examined 30 specimens of Xiphophorus maculatus, 30 Danio rerio, 30 Paracheirodon axelrodi, and 30 Corydoras ephippifer for parasites. Of the 120 fish examined, 22.5% were parasitized by one or more species and a total of 438 parasites were collected and identified. Parasites such as: Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Monogenea, undermined Digenea metacercariae, Acanthostomum sp. metacercariae, Camallanus spp., Bothriocephalus acheilognathi and Echinorhynchus sp. infected the hosts examined. Endoparasites in the larval stage showed the greatest diversity and Camallanus spp. was found in all hosts species examined. Paracheirodon axelrodi (43.3%) was the most parasitized host, while C. ephippifer (6.7%) was the least parasitized. Despite the low ectoparasites level, six species of endoparasites was observed, demonstrating that prophylactic and quarantine procedures were not fully adequate. Therefore, failures in prophylactic procedures on any link in the production industry of ornamental fish may cause parasite transmission to ornamental fish captured in different environments and localities.
