The long-lasting X-ray plateau emission in long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) shows observational evidence for ongoing energy injection, which may be from magnetar spindown due to energy released via either magnetic dipole (MD) or gravitational wave (GW) radiation. In this paper, by systematically analyzing the {\em Swift}/XRT light curves detected before 2018 July, we find 45 light curves with a measured redshift that monotonically decay as a smooth broken power law. By assuming that the central engines of these GRBs are newly born magnetars, we measure the braking index $n$ of putative millisecond magnetars, due to MD and GW radiations. The inferred braking indices are not close to 3 or 5, but range between them with a normal distribution ($n_{\rm c}=4.02\pm 0.11$). We define a dimensionless parameter $\Re$, which is the ratio between the MD and GW components, and find that the energy released via magnetar spindown in most GRBs of our sample is dominated by GW radiation for $P_0=3$ ms and $\epsilon=0.005$ and 0.01. On the other hand, we find that $\Re$ and the braking index $n$ seem to be anticorrelated within a large systematic error at $t=0$, but depend on the values of the parameters $P_0$ and $\epsilon$. These results suggest that the contribution of GW radiation cannot be ignored, and that a larger braking index leads to GWs dominating the energy released during magnetar spindown if indeed magnetars are operating in some long GRBs., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. Dual-energy (DE) chest radiographs provide greater diagnostic information than standard radiographs by separating the image into bone and soft tissue, revealing suspicious lesions which may otherwise be obstructed from view. However, acquisition of DE images requires two physical scans, necessitating specialized hardware and processing, and images are prone to motion artifact. Generation of virtual DE images from standard, single-shot chest radiographs would expand the diagnostic value of standard radiographs without changing the acquisition procedure. We present a Multi-scale Conditional Adversarial Network (MCA-Net) which produces high-resolution virtual DE bone images from standard, single-shot chest radiographs. Our proposed MCA-Net is trained using the adversarial network so that it learns sharp details for the production of high-quality bone images. Then, the virtual DE soft tissue image is generated by processing the standard radiograph with the virtual bone image using a cross projection transformation. Experimental results from 210 patient DE chest radiographs demonstrated that the algorithm can produce high-quality virtual DE chest radiographs. Important structures were preserved, such as coronary calcium in bone images and lung lesions in soft tissue images. The average structure similarity index and the peak signal to noise ratio of the produced bone images in testing data were 96.4 and 41.5, which are significantly better than results from previous methods. Furthermore, our clinical evaluation results performed on the publicly available dataset indicates the clinical values of our algorithms. The radiation mechanism of the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) remains an open question. Although their spectra are usually well fitted with the empirical Band function, which is widely believed to be fully non-thermal and interpreted as an optically thin synchrotron emission, accumulating evidence shows that a thermal component actually exists. In this paper, a multi-color blackbody (mBB) model is proposed for the time-integrated spectrum of GRB 081221 by assuming a power-law distribution of the thermal luminosities with temperature, which manifests photospheric emissions from a different radius and/or angle. The effects of the minimum temperature $kT_{\min }$, the maximum temperature $kT_{\max }$ and the power law index $m$ of the luminosity distribution of an mBB are discussed. The fitting to the time-integrated spectrum during the bright phase (from 20s to 30s since the trigger) of GRB 081221 by the mBB model yields $kT_{\min }$ = $4.4\pm 0.3$ keV, $kT_{\max }$ = 57.0 $_{-1.4}^{+1.6}$ keV, and $m=-0.46_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$. When the time bin is small enough, the time-resolved spectra of GRB 081221 are well fitted with a series of single-temperature blackbodies. Our results imply the prompt emission of GRB 081221 is dominated by the photosphere emission and its time-integrated spectrum is a superposition of pure blackbody components at different times, indicating that some empirical Band spectra may be interpreted as mBB if the temperature is widely distributed., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ, 23 pages, 6 figures

A newly-born magnetar is thought to be central engine of some long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We investigate the evolution of the electromagnetic (EM) emission from the magnetic dipole (MD) radiation wind injected by spin-down of a newly-born magnetar via both quadrupole gravitational-wave (GW) and MD radiations. We show that the EM luminosity evolves as $L_{\rm em}\propto (1+t/\tau_c)^{\alpha}$, and $\alpha$ is $-1$ and $-2$ in the GW and MD radiation dominated scenarios, respectively. Transition from the GW to MD radiation dominated epoch may show up as a smooth break with slope changing from $-1$ to $-2$. If the magnetar collapses to a black hole before $\tau_c$, the MD radiation should be shut down, then the EM light curve should be a plateau followed by a sharp drop. The expected generic light curve in this paradigm is consistent with the canonical X-ray light curve of {\em Swift} long GRBs. The X-ray emission of several long GRBs are identified and interpreted as magnetar spin-down via GW or MD, as well as constrain the physical parameters of magnetar. The combination of MD emission and GRB afterglows may make the diversity of the observed X-ray light curves. The spectral evolution and spectral lag behavior of 92 bright pulses from 84 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by the Fermi GBM telescope are studied. These pulses can be classified into hard-to-soft pulses (H2S, 64/92), H2S-dominated-tracking pulses (21/92), and other tracking pulses (7/92). We focus on the relationship between spectral evolution and spectral lags of H2S and H2S-dominated-tracking pulses. %in hard-to-soft pulses (H2S, 64/92) and H2S-dominating-tracking (21/92) pulses. The main trend of spectral evolution (lag behavior) is estimated with $\log E_p\propto k_E\log(t+t_0)$ (${\hat{\tau}} \propto k_{\hat{\tau}}\log E$), where $E_p$ is the peak photon energy in the radiation spectrum, $t+t_0$ is the observer time relative to the beginning of pulse $-t_0$, and ${\hat{\tau}}$ is the spectral lag of photons with energy $E$ with respect to the energy band $8$-$25$ keV. For H2S and H2S-dominated-tracking pulses, a weak correlation between $k_{{\hat{\tau}}}/W$ and $k_E$ is found, where $W$ is the pulse width. We also study the spectral lag behavior with peak time $t_{\rm p_E}$ of pulses for 30 well-shaped pulses and estimate the main trend of the spectral lag behavior with $\log t_{\rm p_E}\propto k_{t_p}\log E$. It is found that $k_{t_p}$ is correlated with $k_E$. We perform simulations under a phenomenological model of spectral evolution, and find that these correlations are reproduced. We then conclude that spectral lags are closely related to spectral evolution within the pulse. The most natural explanation of these observations is that the emission is from the electrons in the same fluid unit at an emission site moving away from the central engine, as expected in the models invoking magnetic dissipation in a moderately-high-$\sigma$ outflow., Comment: 58 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. Two-episode emission components separated by quiescent gaps in the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been observed in the {\em Swift} era, but there is a lack of spectral information due to the narrow energy band of the {\em Swift}/Burst Alert Telescope. In this paper, a systematic analysis of the spectral and temporal properties of the prompt emission of 101 {\em Fermi}/Gamma-ray Burst Monitor detected long GRBs show the existence of two-episode emission components in the light curves, with quiescent times of up to hundreds of seconds. We focus on investigating the differences of those two emission episodes. We find that the light curves of the two emission components exhibit different behavior, e.g., a soft emission component that either precedes or follows the main prompt emission or that the intensity of the two emission episodes are comparable with each other. No statistically significant correlation in the duration of the two emission episodes can be claimed. We define a new parameter $\varepsilon$ as the ratio of the peak flux of the first and second emission episodes and find that a higher $\varepsilon$ corresponds to a larger fluence. The preferred spectral model in our analysis is a cutoff power-law model for most GRBs. The distribution of $E_p$ for episodes I and II range from tens of keV to 1000 keV with a lognormal fit and there are no significant differences between them. Moreover, we do not find significant relationships between $\varepsilon$ and $E_p$ for the two emission episodes. The favored progenitor model for Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) with Supernova (SN) association is the core collapse of massive stars. One possible outcome of such a collapse is a rapidly spinning, strongly magnetized neutron star ("magnetar"). We systematically analyze the multi-wavelength data of GRB/SN associations detected by several instruments before 2017 June. Twenty GRB/SN systems have been confirmed via direct spectroscopic evidence or a clear light curve bump, as well as some spectroscopic evidence resembling a GRB-SN. We derive/collect the basic physical parameters of the GRBs and the SNe, and look for correlations among these parameters. We find that the peak brightness, $\rm ^{56}Ni$ mass, and explosion energy of SNe associated with GRBs are statistically higher than other Type Ib/c SNe. A statistically significant relation between the peak energy of GRBs and the peak brightness of their associated SNe is confirmed. No significant correlations are found between the GRB energies (either isotropic or beaming-corrected) and the supernova energy. We investigate the energy partition within these systems and find that the beaming-corrected GRB energy of most systems is smaller than the SN energy, with less than 30\% of the total energy distributed in the relativistic jet. The total energy of the systems is typically smaller than the maximum available energy of a millisecond magnetar ($2\times 10^{52}$ erg), especially if aspherical SN explosions are considered. We compare the mass cooling rates and cumulative cooled-down masses predicted by several semi-analytical (SA) cooling models with cosmological hydrodynamical simulations performed using the AREPO code (ignoring processes such as feedback and chemical enrichment). The SA cooling models are the new GALFORM cooling model introduced in Hou et al. (2017), along with two earlier GALFORM cooling models and the L-GALAXIES and MORGANA cooling models. We find that the predictions of the new GALFORM cooling model are generally in best agreement with the simulations. For halos with $M_{\rm halo}\lesssim 3\times 10^{11}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$, the SA models predict that the timescale for radiative cooling is shorter than or comparable to the gravitational infall timescale. Even though SA models assume that gas falls onto galaxies from a spherical gas halo, while the simulations show that the cold gas is accreted through filaments, both methods predict similar mass cooling rates, because in both cases the gas accretion occurs on similar timescales. For halos with $M_{\rm halo}\gtrsim 10^{12}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$, gas in the simulations typically cools from a roughly spherical hot gas halo, as assumed in the SA models, but the halo gas gradually contracts during cooling, leading to compressional heating. SA models ignore this heating, and so overestimate mass cooling rates by factors of a few. At low redshifts halo major mergers or a sequence of successive smaller mergers are seen in the simulations to strongly heat the halo gas and suppress cooling, while mergers at high redshifts do not suppress cooling, because the gas filaments are difficult to heat up.
