Background: Oral mucositis is an acute adverse reaction with high incidence during radiotherapy. Severe oral mucositis can seriously affect patients' quality of life and compliance with radiotherapy. The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for severe oral mucositis and to develop a nomogram for predicting severe oral mucositis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods: One hundred and ninety patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma were retrospectively screened in this study. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the best predictors of severe oral mucositis. A nomogram was constructed based on the factors. Finally, the discriminative ability of the nomogram was evaluated. Results: Four independent factors predicting severe oral mucositis were identified: age, N stage, the cycle of induction chemotherapy, and dose-volumetric parameter V40 (%) of oral cavity. The area under the receiver of operating characteristic curve of the nomogram was 0.759 (95% confidence interval: 0.691–0.827). Conclusions: A predictive nomogram for severe oral mucositis was established and validated in this study. The nomogram provides a reliable and practical model for clinically predicting the probability of severe oral mucositis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma before intensity-modulated radiation therapy. China has accumulated multiple practices and experiences in building and enhancing malaria surveillance and response system. As China's engagement into global health has gathered stronger momentum than ever, China together with the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute and WHO has organised five sessions of the International Forum on Surveillance-Response System Leading to Tropical Diseases Elimination during 2012–2020, in which malaria elimination has always been one of the hottest topics. In this study, the roles of international network on the surveillance and response system were explored to achieve a global malaria-free goal. China's approach to malaria elimination has demonstrated significance of global collaboration on taking joint prevention and control, and building a worldwide institutional-based network. World Health Organization (WHO) certified China malaria-free on June 30, 2021, which brightens the goal of global malaria elimination efforts. China contributed its unique innovations to the global community: Artemisinin, discovered by Tu Youyou, has saved millions of lives globally; the "1-3-7" norm developed in 2012, has been adapted in the local contexts of countries in the Southeast Asia and Africa. How to the targets of Global Technical Strategy for Malaria (GTS) 2016−2030. By looking into the malaria control phase, towards elimination phase from 1960 to 2011 in sub-Saharan Africa and China, we found that the gap in malaria burden will widen unless the interventions in Africa are enhanced. It is imperative to identify the key China–Africa cooperation areas on malaria control and elimination, so that synergized efforts could be pooled together to help African countries achieve the elimination goal. The practices from China malaria control and elimination efforts could be leveraged to fast-track malaria elimination efforts in Africa, which makes it possible that the China's journey of malaria elimination extends to Africa. Metal elements are present in the human body, and their levels in the blood have important impacts on health. In this study, 2488 Chinese individuals were included in a genome-wide association study of 21 serum metal levels, with approximately 179,000 East Asian individuals in a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, and 628,000 Europeans in a two-sample MR analysis. We identified two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs35691438 and rs671 that were significantly associated with serum copper levels (SCLs). The bidirectional two-sample MR analysis in the East Asian population showed that gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase levels have a causal effect on SCLs. SCLs have causal effects on six outcomes, namely risks of esophageal varix, glaucoma, sleep apnea syndrome, and systemic lupus erythematosus, white blood cell count, and usage of drugs affecting bone structure and mineralization. The two-sample MR analyses in the European population showed causal effects of erythrocyte copper levels on risks of carpal tunnel syndrome and compression fracture. Our results provide original insights into the causal relationship between blood metal levels and multiple human phenotypes. A genome-wide association study in a Chinese population identifies SNPs associated with serum copper levels. In two recent articles a method has been described for calculating the total energy of large molecules. The method is called the kernel energy method (KEM) and requires knowledge of the crystal structure of interest. Calculations are simplified by adopting the approximation that a full molecule could be represented by smaller kernels of atoms. The KEM was illustrated with peptides ranging in size from 4 to 19 amino acid residues, and was found to deliver accurate results. The use of the KEM does not depend upon a particular choice of basis functions and is applicable across quantum computational methods of differing levels of accuracy. These earlier investigations suggested that the KEM could be used to calculate the ab initio quantum mechanical energy of proteins. An application has been made with the protein insulin, composed of 51 aa. Accurate KEM Hartree--Fock energies are obtained for the separate A and B chains of insulin and for their composite structure in the full insulin molecule. A limited basis is used to make possible calculation of the full insulin molecule, which can be used as a standard of accuracy for the KEM calculation. The KEM result obtained is [E.sub.KEM] = -21104.7656 a.u. It differs from a full molecule Hartree--Fock result by only 0.000002%. The solvent molecules can be treated effectively as a separate kernel. The KEM result for the fully solvated insulin molecule is [E.sub.KEM] = -26275.4127 a.u., differing from the full molecule Hartree--Fock result by as little as 0.000023%.
