Star-forming gas clouds are strongly magnetized, and their ionization fractions are high enough to place them close to the regime of ideal magnetohydrodyamics on all but the smallest size scales. In this review we discuss the effects of magnetic fields on the star formation rate (SFR) in these clouds, and on the mass spectrum of the fragments that are the outcome of the star formation process, the stellar initial mass function (IMF). Current numerical results suggest that magnetic fields by themselves are minor players in setting either the SFR or the IMF, changing star formation rates and median stellar masses only by factors of ~2−3 compared to non-magnetized flows. However, the indirect effects of magnetic fields, via their interaction with star formation feedback in the form of jets, photoionization, radiative heating, and supernovae, could have significantly larger effects. We explore evidence for this possibility in current simulations, and suggest avenues for future exploration, both in simulations and observations.

We study the influence of star formation on magnetic field in galaxies. Two approaches have been used to describe this mechanism. The first one uses some averaged approximate kinematic characteristics that appear in the galactic dynamo equations. We use the so-called no-z model that takes into account the fact that galactic disks are quite thin and hence we can consider only the field components that are parallel to the plane of the galaxy. We also use the equation that describes the evolution of magnetic helicity, which can be important for galaxies with intensive star formation. The second approach uses the dynamo equations with random coefficients, which are useful for describing magnetic fields in galaxies with rapidly changing kinematic parameters. Both methods yield similar results: if the surface star formation rate is small, the magnetic field evolution does not change very much. If the surface star formation rate is more than five times higher than in the Milky Way, the field decays.

From molecular clouds to protoplanetary discs, non-ideal magnetic effects are important in many astrophysical environments. Indeed, in star and disc formation processes, it has become clear that these effects are critical to the evolution of the system. The efficacy of non-ideal effects is, however, determined by the complex interplay between magnetic fields, ionizing radiation, cosmic rays, microphysics, and chemistry. In order to understand these key microphysical parameters, we present a one-dimensional non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics code and apply it to a model of a time-dependent, oblique, magnetic shock wave. By varying the microphysical ingredients of the model, we find that cosmic rays and dust play a major role, and that, despite the uncertainties, the inclusion of microphysics is essential to obtain a realistic outcome in magnetic astrophysical simulations. The properties of dust in the interstellar medium (ISM) nearest the Sun are poorly understood because the low column densities of dust toward nearby stars induce little photometric reddening, rendering the grains largely undetectable. Stellar polarimetry offers one pathway to deducing the properties of this diffuse material. Here we present multi-wavelength aperture polarimetry measurements of seven bright stars chosen to probe interstellar polarization near the edge of the Local Hot Bubble (LHB) – an amorphous region of relatively low-density interstellar gas and dust extending ∼70–150 pc from the Sun. The measurements were taken using the HIgh Precision Polarimetric Instrument (HIPPI) on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope. HIPPI is an aperture stellar polarimeter with a demonstrated sensitivity of 4.3 parts-per-million (ppm). Of the stars observed two are polarized to a much greater degree than the others; they have a wavelength of maximum polarization (λmax) of ∼550 ± 20 nm – similar to that of stars beyond the LHB – and we conclude that they are in the wall of the LHB. The remaining five stars have polarizations of ∼70–160 ppm, of these four have a much bluer λmax, ∼350 ± 50 nm. Bluer values of λmax may indicate grains shocked during the evolution of the Loop I Superbubble. The remaining star, HD 4150 is not well fit by a Serkowski curve, and may be intrinsically polarized. We analyse an all-sky compilation of 13 data sources with optical interstellar linear polarization for 3871 Gaia DR2 and Hipparcos stars within 500 pc, which do not exhibit a considerable intrinsic polarization. These data are analysed together with five 3D maps and models of the reddening E (B − V). We consider variations of the polarization degree P, position angle θ, and polarization efficiency P / E (B − V) with Galactic coordinates, distance R, and dereddened colour. P shows a maximum at the Gould Belt mid-plane. P / R drops in the Local Bubble by several times defining a boundary of the Bubble at P  = 0.1 per cent. All the data sources of the reddening, except Lallement et al. show a drop of P / E (B − V) in the Bubble. A significant number of stars with a too high P / E (B − V), where the reddening is taken from Arenou et al. Drimmel et al. or Lallement et al. either reject the Serkowski's limit P / E (B − V) < 9.3 per cent per mag or manifest a systematic underestimation of the reddening by these data sources. The spatial- and colour-dependent variations of P and E (B − V) outside the Bubble compensate each other, resulting in a nearly constant P / E (B − V). A giant envelope of aligned dust dominates at middle and high latitudes outside the Bubble. The Markkanen's cloud, the North Polar Spur, and some other filaments are parts of this envelope. We explore how the velocity gradient technique (VGT) can be applied to absorbing media in the case of 13CO 2–1 emission. The VGT is a new way to trace magnetic fields in the plane of the sky using only spectroscopic observations. We apply the VGT to magnetohydrodynamic turbulence simulations that have been post-processed to include 13CO 2–1 emission and we calculate the velocity centroid gradients. We find that the velocity centroid gradients trace the projected magnetic field in media with different 13CO abundances, densities and optical depths. Our study opens up the possibility of using velocity centroid gradients to trace magnetic fields in molecular clouds using 13CO emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The stellar mass spectrum is an important property of the stellar cluster and a fundamental quantity to understand our Universe. The fragmentation of diffuse molecular cloud into stars is subject to physical processes such as gravity, turbulence, thermal pressure, and magnetic field. Aims. The final mass of a star is believed to be a combined outcome of a virially unstable reservoir and subsequent accretion. We aim to clarify the roles of different supporting energies, notably the thermal pressure and magnetic field, in determining the stellar mass. Methods. Following our previous studies, we performed a series of numerical experiments of stellar cluster formation inside an isolated molecular clump. We investigated whether any characteristic mass is introduced into the fragmentation processes by changing the effective equation of state (EOS) of the diffuse gas, that is to say gas whose density is below the critical density at which dust becomes opaque to its radiation, and the strength of the magnetic field. Results. The EOS of the diffuse gas, including the bulk temperature and polytropic index, does not significantly affect the shape of the stellar mass spectrum. The presence of magnetic field slightly modifies the shape of the mass spectrum only when extreme values are applied. Conclusions. This study confirms that the peak of the initial mass function is primarily determined by the adiabatic high-density end of the EOS that mimics the radiation inside the high-density gas. Furthermore, the shape of the mass spectrum is mostly sensitive to the density PDF and the magnetic field likely only a secondary role. We present the results from the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA) observations of the ground- and excited-state OH masers (1.7- and 6.0-GHz lines) at high spatial and velocity resolution towards the high-mass star-forming region G351.417 |$+$| 0.645. We obtained accurate spatial gradient magnetic fields from 21 and 23 Zeeman pairs at ground and excited states, respectively, providing magnetic field measurements between −6.4 and +4.4 mG. In addition, we verify the reliability of magnetic field strengths measured from previous lower resolution observations. We found that OH maser features at 1665- and 6035-MHz reveal the same trend of a reversal of magnetic field which we attribute, based on recent infrared observations to cloud fragmentation. In comparison with previous LBA observations 11 yr prior, we identify several matched Zeeman pairs. We found no significant changes of magnetic field strengths, directions, or radial velocities from the matched Zeeman pairs between these two epochs (although there were small internal proper motions). This implies quite stable physical conditions in this region. Moreover, we also analysed the physical conditions from the coincidence of OH maser features from different transitions based on current OH maser models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Cosmic rays (CRs) and magnetic fields are dynamically important components in the Galaxy, and their energy densities are comparable to that of the turbulent interstellar gas. The interaction of CRs and Galactic magnetic fields (GMF) produces synchrotron radiation clearly visible in the radio regime. Detailed measurements of synchrotron radiation averaged over the line-of-sight (LOS), so-called synchrotron emissivities, can be used as a tracer of the CR density and GMF strength. Aims. Our aim is to model the synchrotron emissivity in the Milky Way using a three-dimensional dataset instead of LOS-integrated intensity maps on the sky. Methods. Using absorbed HII regions, we measured the synchrotron emissivity over a part of the LOS through the Galaxy, changing from a two-dimensional to a three-dimensional view. Performing these measurements on a large scale is one of the new applications of the window opened by current low-frequency arrays. Using various simple axisymmetric emissivity models and a number of GMF-based emissivity models, we were able to simulate the synchrotron emissivities and compare them to the observed values in the catalog. Results. We present a catalog of low-frequency absorption measurements of HII regions, their distances and electron temperatures, compiled from literature. These data show that the axisymmetric emissivity models are not complex enough, but the GMF-based emissivity models deliver a reasonable fit. These models suggest that the fit can be improved by either an enhanced synchrotron emissivity in the outer reaches of the Milky Way or an emissivity drop near the Galactic center. Conclusions. Current GMF models plus a constant CR density model cannot explain low-frequency absorption measurements, but the fits improved with slight (ad hoc) adaptations. Context. The analysis of the full-sky Planck polarization data at 850 μm revealed unexpected properties of the E- and B-mode power spectra of dust emission in the interstellar medium (ISM). The positive cross-correlations over a wide range of angular scales between the total dust intensity, T, and both E and (most of all) B modes has raised new questions about the physical mechanisms that affect dust polarization, such as the Galactic magnetic field structure. This is key both to better understanding ISM dynamics and to accurately describing Galactic foregrounds to the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In particular, in the quest to find primordial B modes of the CMB, the observed positive cross-correlation between T and B for interstellar dust requires further investigation towards parity-violating processes in the ISM. Aims. In this theoretical paper we investigate the possibility that the observed cross-correlations in the dust polarization power spectra, and specifically the one between T and B, can be related to a parity-odd quantity in the ISM such as the magnetic helicity. Methods. We produce synthetic dust polarization data, derived from 3D analytical toy models of density structures and helical magnetic fields, to compare with the E and B modes of observations. We present several models. The first is an ideal fully helical isotropic case, such as the Arnold-Beltrami-Childress field. Second, following the nowadays favored interpretation of the T–E signal in terms of the observed alignment between the magnetic field morphology and the filamentary density structure of the diffuse ISM, we design models for helical magnetic fields wrapped around cylindrical interstellar filaments. Lastly, focusing on the observed T–B correlation, we propose a new line of interpretation of the Planck observations advocating the presence of a large-scale helical component of the Galactic magnetic field in the solar neighborhood. Results. Our analysis shows that: I) the sign of magnetic helicity does not affect E and B modes for isotropic magnetic-field configurations; II) helical magnetic fields threading interstellar filaments cannot reproduce the Planck results; and III) a weak helical left-handed magnetic field structure in the solar neighborhood may explain the T–B correlation seen in the Planck data. Such a magnetic-field configuration would also account for the observed large-scale T–E correlation. Conclusions. This work suggests a new perspective for the interpretation of the dust polarization power spectra that supports the imprint of a large-scale structure of the Galactic magnetic field in the solar neighborhood. Context. The 30 Dor C superbubble is unique for its synchrotron X-ray shell, as well as being the first superbubble to be detected in TeV γ-rays, though which is the dominant TeV emission mechanism, leptonic or hadronic, is still unclear. Aims. We aim to use new Chandra observations of 30 Dor C to resolve the synchrotron shell in unprecedented detail and to estimate the magnetic (B) field in the postshock region, a key discriminator between TeV γ-ray emission mechanisms. Methods. We extracted radial profiles in the 1.5–8 keV range from various sectors around the synchrotron shell and fitted these with a projected and point spread function convolved postshock volumetric emissivity model to determine the filament widths. We then calculated the postshock magnetic field strength from these widths. Results. We find that most of the sectors were well fitted with our postshock model and the determined B-field values were low, all with best fits ≲20 μG. Upper limits on the confidence intervals of three sectors reached ≳30 μG though these were poorly constrained. The generally low B-field values suggests a leptonic-dominated origin for the TeV γ-rays. Our postshock model did not provide adequate fits to two sectors. We find that one sector simply did not provide a clean enough radial profile, while the other could be fitted with a modified postshock model where the projected profile falls off abruptly below ~0.8 times the shell radius, yielding a postshock B-field of 4.8 (3.7–11.8) μG which is again consistent with the leptonic TeV γ-ray mechanism. Alternatively, the observed profiles in these sectors could result from synchrotron enhancements around a shock–cloud interaction as suggested in previous works. Conclusions. The average postshock B-field determined around the X-ray synchrotron shell of 30 Dor C suggests the leptonic scenario as the dominant emission mechanism for the TeV γ-rays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies of the diffuse parts of molecular clouds have revealed the presence of parallel, ordered low-density filaments termed striations. Flows along magnetic field lines, Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities and hydromagnetic waves are amongst the various formation mechanisms proposed. Through a synergy of observational, numerical, and theoretical analysis, previous studies singled out the hydromagnetic waves model as the only one that can account for the observed properties of striations. Based on the predictions of that model, we develop here a method for measuring the temporal evolution of striations through a combination of molecular and dust continuum observations. Our method allows us to not only probe temporal variations in molecular clouds but also estimate the strength of both the ordered and fluctuating components of the magnetic field projected on the plane of the sky. We benchmark our new method against chemical and radiative transfer effects through 2D magnetohydrodynamic simulations coupled with non-equilibrium chemical modelling and non-local thermodynamic equilibrium line radiative transfer. We find good agreement between theoretical predictions, simulations, and observations of striations in the Taurus molecular cloud. We find a value of |$\rm {27 \pm 7} ~\rm {\mu G}$| for the plane-of-sky magnetic field, in agreement with previous estimates via the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, and a ratio of fluctuating to ordered component of the magnetic field of ∼10 per cent. We use the polaris radiative transfer code to generate predictions of the two main observables directly sensitive to the magnetic field morphology and strength in filaments: dust polarization and gas Zeeman line splitting. We simulate generic gas filaments with power-law density profiles assuming two density-field strength dependencies, six different filament inclinations, and nine distinct magnetic field morphologies, including helical, toroidal, and warped magnetic field geometries. We present idealized spatially resolved dust polarization and Zeeman-derived field strengths and directions maps. Under the assumption that dust grains are aligned by radiative torques, dust polarization traces the projected plane-of-the-sky magnetic field morphology. Zeeman line splitting delivers simultaneously the intensity-weighted line-of-sight field strength and direction. We show that linear dust polarization alone is unable to uniquely constrain the 3D field morphology. We demonstrate that these ambiguities are ameliorated or resolved with the addition of the Zeeman directional information. Thus, observations of both the dust polarization and Zeeman splitting together provide the most promising means for obtaining constraints of the 3D magnetic field configuration. We find that the Zeeman-derived field strengths are at least a factor of a few below the input field strengths due to line-of-sight averaging through the filament density gradient. Future observations of both dust polarization and Zeeman splitting are essential for gaining insights into the role of magnetic fields in star- and cluster-forming filaments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the interactions of energetic hadronic particles (cosmic ray protons) with photons and baryons in protogalactic environments, where the target photons are supplied by the first generations of stars to form in the galaxy and the cosmological microwave background, while the target baryons are the interstellar and circumgalactic medium. We show that pair-production and photo-pion processes are the dominant interactions at particle energies above 1019 eV, while proton-proton (pp) interaction pion-production dominates at the lower energies in line with expectations from, for example γ-ray observations of star-forming galaxies and dense regions of our own galaxy's interstellar medium. We calculate the path lengths for the interaction channels and determine the corresponding rates of energy deposition. We have found that protogalactic magnetic fields and their evolution can significantly affect the energy transport and energy deposition processes of cosmic rays. Within a Myr after the onset of star-formation the magnetic field in a protogalaxy could attain a strength sufficient to confine all but the highest energy particles within the galaxy. This enhances the cosmic ray-driven self-heating of the protogalaxy to a rate of around 10−24 erg cm−3 s−1 for a galaxy with strong star-forming activity that yields one core collapse supernova event per year. This heating power exceeds even that due to radiative emission from the protogalaxy's stellar populations. However, in a short window before the protogalaxy is fully magnetized, energetic particles could stream across the galaxy freely, delivering energy into the circumgalactic and intergalactic medium. Supersonic isothermal turbulence establishes a network of transient dense shocks that sweep up material and have a density profile described by balance between ram pressure of the background fluid versus the magnetic and gas pressure gradient behind the shock. These rare, densest regions of a turbulent environment can become Jeans unstable and collapse to form pre-stellar cores. Using numerical simulations of magnetogravoturbulence, we describe the structural properties of dense shocks, which are the seeds of gravitational collapse, as a function of magnetic field strength. In the regime of a weak magnetic field, the collapse is isotropic. Strong magnetic field strengths lead to significant anisotropy in the shocked distribution and collapse occurs preferentially parallel to the field lines. Our work provides insight into analysing the magnetic field topology and density structures of young protostellar collapse, which the theory presented here predicts are associated with large-scale strong shocks that persist for at least a freefall time. We explore the structure of magnetic field lines in and around filaments in simulations of molecular clouds undergoing global, multiscale gravitational collapse. In these simulations, filaments are not in a static equilibrium, but are long-lived flow structures that accrete gas from their environment and direct it towards clumps embedded in the filament or at the nodes at the conjunction with other filaments. In this context, the magnetic field is dragged by the collapsing gas, so its structure must reflect the flow that generates the filament. Around the filament, the gas is accreted on to it, and the magnetic lines must then be perpendicular to the filament. As the gas density increases, the gas flow changes direction, becoming almost parallel to the filament, and magnetic lines also tend to align with it. At the spine of the filament, however, magnetic lines become perpendicular again since they must connect to lines on the opposite side of the filament, resulting in 'U'-shaped magnetic structures, which tend to be stretched by the longitudinal flow along the filament. Magnetic diffusive processes, however, allow the gas to continue to flow. Assuming a stationary state in which the ram pressure of the flow balances the magnetic tension, the curvature of the field lines is determined by the diffusion rate. We derive an expression relating the curvature of the field lines to the diffusive coefficient, which may be used to observationally determine the nature of the diffusive process. Context. Magnetic fields play a very important role in the evolution of galaxies through their direct impact on star formation and stellar feedback-induced turbulence. However, their co-evolution with these processes has still not been thoroughly investigated, and the possible effect of the initial conditions is largely unknown. Aims. This Letter presents the first results from a series of high-resolution numerical models, aimed at deciphering the effect of the initial conditions and of stellar feedback on the evolution of the galactic magnetic field in isolated Milky Way-like galaxies. Methods. The models start with an ordered magnetic field of varying strength, either poloidal or toroidal, and are evolved with and without supernova feedback. They include a dark matter halo, a stellar and a gaseous disk, as well as the appropriate cooling and heating processes for the interstellar medium. Results. Independently of the initial conditions, the galaxies develop a turbulent velocity field and a random magnetic field component in under 15 Myr. Supernova feedback is extremely efficient in building a random magnetic field component up to large galactic heights. However, a random magnetic field emerges even in runs without feedback, which points to an inherent instability of the ordered component. Conclusions. Supernova feedback greatly affects the velocity field of the galaxy up to large galactic heights, and helps restructure the magnetic field up to 10 kpc above the disk, independently of the initial magnetic field morphology. On the other hand, the initial morphology of the magnetic field can accelerate the development of a random component at large heights. We present an implementation of the Hall term in the non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics equations into the adaptive-mesh-refinement code RAMSES to study its impact on star formation. Recent works show that the Hall effect heavily influences the regulation of the angular momentum in collapsing dense cores, strengthening or weakening the magnetic braking. Our method consists of a modification of the two-dimensional constrained transport scheme. Our scheme shows convergence of second order in space and the frequency of the propagation of whistler waves is accurate. We confirm previous results, namely that during the collapse, the Hall effect generates a rotation of the fluid with a direction in the mid-plane that depends on the sign of the Hall resistivity, while counter-rotating envelopes develop on each side of the mid-plane. However, we find that the predictability of our numerical results is severely limited. The angular momentum is not conserved in any of our dense core-collapse simulations with the Hall effect: a large amount of angular momentum is generated within the first Larson core, a few hundred years after its formation, without compensation by the surrounding gas. This issue is not mentioned in previous studies and may be correlated to the formation of the accretion shock on the Larson core. We identify a counterpart to a Galactic supershell in diffuse radio polarization, and use this to determine the magnetic fields associated with this object. GSH 006 − 15 + 7 has perturbed the polarized emission at 2.3 GHz, as observed in the S-band Polarization All Sky Survey (S-PASS), acting as a Faraday screen. We model the Faraday rotation over the shell, and produce a map of Faraday depth over the area across it. Such models require information about the polarized emission behind the screen, which we obtain from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), scaled from 23 to 2.3 GHz, to estimate the synchrotron background behind GSH 006 − 15 + 7. Using the modelled Faraday thickness, we determine the magnitude and the plane-of-the-sky structure of the line-of-sight magnetic field in the shell. We find a peak line-of-sight field strength of $$|B_\parallel |_\text{peak}=2.0^{+0.01 }_{ -0.7}\, \mu$$ G. Our measurement probes weak magnetic fields in a low-density regime (number densities of $${\sim }0.4\,$$ cm−3) of the ISM, thus providing crucial information about the magnetic fields in the partially-ionized phase. Observations of extended gamma-ray emission around Galactic cosmic-ray (CR) sources can be used as novel probes of interstellar magnetic fields. Using very high energy gamma-ray data from the HAWC Observatory, we place constraints on the properties of the magnetic turbulence within ≈25 pc from Geminga. We inject and propagate individual CR electrons in 3D realizations of turbulent magnetic fields, calculate the resulting gamma-ray emission, and compare with HAWC measurements of this region. We find that HAWC data are compatible with expectations for Kolmogorov or Kraichnan turbulence and can be well fitted for reasonable coherence lengths and strengths of the turbulence, despite implying a CR diffusion coefficient significantly smaller than those suggested by Galactic CR propagation codes. The best fit is found for a coherence length L c ≈ 1 pc and a magnetic field strength $$B_{\rm rms} \approx 3\, \mu$$ G, and the preferred value for L c increases with B rms. Moreover, the apparent lack of strong asymmetries in the observed emission allows us to constrain the coherence length to L c ≲ 5 pc in this region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present very-high-resolution 1D MHD simulations of the late-stage supernova remnants (SNRs). In the post-adiabatic stage, the magnetic field has an important and significant dynamical effect on the shock dynamics, the flow structure, and hence the acceleration and emission of cosmic rays. We find that the tangential component of the magnetic field provides pressure support that to a fair degree prevents the collapse of the radiative shell and thus limits the total compression ratio of the partially or fully radiative forward shock. A consequence is that the spectra of cosmic rays would not be as hard as in hydrodynamic simulations. We also investigated the effect on the flow profiles of the magnetic-field inclination and a large-scale gradient in the gas density and/or the magnetic field. A positive density gradient shortens the evolutionary stages, whereas a shock obliquity lowers the shock compression. The compression of the tangential component of the magnetic field leads to its dominance in the downstream region of post-adiabatic shocks for a wide range of orientation of the upstream field, which may explain why one preferentially observes tangential radio polarization in old SNRs. As most cosmic rays are produced at late stages of SNR evolution, the post-adiabatic phase and the influence of the magnetic field during it are most important for modeling the cosmic-ray acceleration at old SNRs and the gamma-ray emission from late-stage SNRs interacting with clouds. We develop a semi-analytic model to investigate how accretion on to wide low-mass binary stars can result in a close high-mass binary system. The key ingredient is to allow mass accretion while limiting the gain in angular momentum. We envision this process as being regulated by an external magnetic field during infall. Molecular clouds are made to collapse spherically with material either accreting on to the stars or settling in a disc. Our aim is to determine what initial conditions are needed for the resulting binary to be both massive and close. Whether material accretes, and what happens to the binary separation as a result, depends on the relative size of its specific angular momentum, compared to the specific angular momentum of the binary. When we add a magnetic field we are introducing a torque to the system that is capable of stripping the molecular cloud of some of its angular momentum, and consequently easing the formation of high-mass binaries. Our results suggest that clouds in excess of 1000 M⊙ and radii of 0.5 pc or larger, can easily form binary systems with masses in excess of 25 M⊙ and separations of order 10 R⊙ with magnetic fields of order 100 $\mu$ G (mass-to-flux ratios of order five). Observations show that galaxies and their interstellar media are pervaded by strong magnetic fields with energies in the diffuse component being at least comparable to the thermal and even as large or larger than the turbulent energy. Such strong magnetic fields prevent the formation of stars because patches of the interstellar medium are magnetically subcritical. Here we present the results from global numerical simulations of strongly magnetized and self-gravitating galactic discs, which show that the buoyancy of the magnetic field due to the Parker instability leads at first to the formation of giant filamentary regions. These filamentary structures become gravitationally unstable and fragment into $${\sim }10^5 \,\mathrm{M}_{\odot }$$ clouds that attract kpc long coherent filamentary flows that build them into giant molecular clouds (GMCs). Our results thus provide a solution to the long-standing problem of how the transition from sub- to supercritical regions in the interstellar medium proceeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Currently, detection of the primordial gravitational waves using the B-mode of cosmic microwave background (CMB) is primarily limited by our knowledge of the polarized microwave foreground emissions. Improvements of the foreground analysis are therefore necessary. As we revealed in an earlier paper, the E-mode and B-mode of the polarized foreground have noticeably different properties, both in morphology and frequency spectrum, suggesting that they arise from different physicalprocesses, and need to be studied separately. Aims. I study the polarized emission from Galactic loops, especially Loop I, and mainly focus on the following questions: Does the polarized loop emission contribute predominantly to the E-mode or B-mode? In which frequency bands and in which sky regions can the polarized loop emission be identified? Methods. Based on a well known result concerning the magnetic field alignment in supernova explosions, a theoretical expectation is established that the loop polarizations should be predominantly E-mode. In particular, the expected polarization angles of Loop I are compared with those from the real microwave band data of WMAP and Planck. Results and conclusions. The comparison between model and data shows remarkable consistency between the data and our expectations at all bands and for a large area of the sky. This result suggests that the polarized emission of Galactic Loop I is a major polarized component in all microwave bands from 23 to 353 GHz, and a considerable part of the polarized foreground likely originates from a local bubble associated with Loop I, instead of the far more distant Galactic emission. This result also provides a possible way to explain the E-to-B excess problem by contribution of the loops. We report the detection of a new Galactic bubble at the interface between the halo and the Galactic disc. We suggest that the nearby Lupus complex and parts of the Ophiuchus complex constitute the denser parts of the structure. This young bubble, ≲3 Myr old, could be the remnant of a supernova and it expands inside a larger HI loop that has been created by the outflows of the Upper Scorpius OB association. An HI cavity filled with hot X-ray gas is associated with the structure, which is consistent with the Galactic chimney scenario. The X-ray emission extends beyond the west and north-west edges of the bubble, suggesting that hot gas outflows are breaching the cavity, possibly through the fragmented Lupus complex. Analyses of the polarised radio synchrotron and of the polarised dust emission of the region suggest the connection of the Galactic centre spur with the young Galactic bubble. A distribution of HI clumps that spatially corresponds well to the cavity boundaries was found at VLSR ≃−100 km s−1. Some of these HI clumps are forming jets, which may arise from the fragmented part of the bubble. We suggest that these clumps might be "dripping" cold clouds from the shell walls inside the cavity that is filled with hot ionised gas. It is possible that some of these clumps are magnetised and were then accelerated by the compressed magnetic field at the edge of the cavity. Such a mechanism would challenge the Galactic accretion and fountain model, where high-velocity clouds are considered to be formed at high Galactic latitude from hot gas flows from the Galactic plane. Aims. The aims of this work are to test the feasibility of observing dust polarization at frequencies lower than 50 GHz, which is the optically thinner part of the modified black body spectrum, and to clarify whether or not the polarization mechanism is identical or similar to that for (sub)millimeter observations. Methods. We performed the new Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) full polarization observations at 40–48 GHz (6.3–7.5 mm) towards the nearby (d= 147 ± 3.4 pc) Class 0 young stellar object (YSO) IRAS 16293–2422, and compared these with the previous Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations. We observed the quasar J1407+2827, which is weakly polarized and can be used as a leakage term calibrator for <9 GHz observations, to gauge the potential residual polarization leakage after calibration. Results. We did not detect Stokes Q, U, and V intensities from the observations of J1407+2827, and constrain (3σ) the residual polarization leakage after calibration to be ≲0.3%. Limited by thermal noise, we only detected linear polarization from one of the two binary components of our target source, IRAS 16293–2422 B. The measured polarization percentages range from less than one percent to a few tens of percent. The derived polarization position angles from our observations are in excellent agreement with those detected from the previous observations of the SMA, implying that on the spatial scale we are probing (~50–1000 au), the physical mechanisms for polarizing the continuum emission do not vary significantly over the wavelength range of ~0.88–7.5 mm. Conclusions. We hypothesize that the observed polarization position angles trace the magnetic field, which converges from large scale to an approximately face-on rotating accretion flow. In this scenario, magnetic field is predominantly poloidal on >100 au scales, and becomes toroidal on smaller scales. However, this interpretation remains uncertain due to the high dust optical depths at the central region of IRAS 16293–2422 B and the uncertain temperature profile. We suggest that dust polarization at wavelengths comparable or longer than 7 mm may still trace interstellar magnetic field. Future sensitive observations of dust polarization in the fully optically thin regime will have paramount importance for unambiguously resolving the magnetic field configuration. Star formation started as a cosmic process soon after the big bang and still continues in the Milky Way, although at a decreasing rate. The formation of dense interstellar clouds, their fragmentation and eventual collapse lead to the birth of stars. The nearby clouds provide the highest resolution for the study of this process. The progress is closely following the improvement of the infrared and radio-wavelength facilities that enables us to follow even the earliest stages of the star-formation process inside molecular clouds. On the other hand, modern numerical simulations can take into account most of the relevant physics and often provide a more direct access into the general principles of star formation. The comparison of observations and simulations is therefore essential. In this paper, will discuss star formation in the solar neighbourhood, concentrating on the prestellar phases leading up to the formation of protostars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

I present our observations and modeling of the 1.3 mm and 3.18 mm dust continuum emission in Class 0 protostars, from the IRAM-PdBI CALYPSO survey. We show that most protostars are better reproduced by models including a disk-like dust continuum component contributing to the flux at small scales, but less than 25% of these candidate protostellar disks are resolved at radii >60 au, which favors magnetized models of rotating protostellar collapse for disk formation (Maury et al. 2019). I also present new ALMA observations of the molecular line emission in the IRAM04191 protostar, suggesting a small counter-rotating disk is detected in this young low-luminosity solar-type protostar. Finally, I show our ALMA observations of the magnetic field topology in the B335 protostar, which when compared to the typical output from protostellar collapse models, suggest the magnetic field might be responsible for constraining the disk size to remain very small in this protostar (Maury et al. 2018). Recent Planck observations have revealed some of the important statistical properties of synchrotron and dust polarization, namely, the B to E mode power and temperature–E (TE) mode cross-correlation. In this paper, we extend our analysis in Kandel et al. that studied the B to E mode power ratio for polarized dust emission to include TE cross-correlation and develop an analogous formalism for synchrotron signal, all using a realistic model of magnetohydrodynamical turbulence. Our results suggest that the Planck results for both synchrotron and dust polarization can be understood if the turbulence in the Galaxy is sufficiently sub-Alfvénic. Making use of the observed poor magnetic field–density correlation, we show that the observed positive TE correlation for dust corresponds to our theoretical expectations. We also show how the B to E ratio as well as the TE cross-correlation can be used to study media magnetization, compressibility, and level of density–magnetic field correlation. A dynamo mechanism driven by differential rotation when stars merge has been proposed to explain the presence of strong fields in certain classes of magnetic stars. In the case of the high-field magnetic white dwarfs (HFMWDs), the site of the differential rotation has been variously thought to be the common envelope, the hot outer regions of a merged degenerate core or an accretion disc are formed by a tidally disrupted companion that is subsequently accreted by a degenerate core. We have shown previously that the observed incidence of magnetism and the mass distribution in HFMWDs are consistent with the hypothesis that they are the result of merging binaries during common envelope evolution. Here, we calculate the magnetic field strengths generated by common envelope interactions for synthetic populations using a simple prescription for the generation of fields and find that the observed magnetic field distribution is also consistent with the stellar merging hypothesis. We use the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test to study the correlation between the calculated and the observed field strengths and find that it is consistent for low envelope ejection efficiency. We also suggest that the field generation by the plunging of a giant gaseous planet on to a white dwarf may explain why magnetism among cool white dwarfs (including DZ white dwarfs) is higher than among hot white dwarfs. In this picture, a super-Jupiter residing in the outer regions of the white dwarf's planetary system is perturbed into a highly eccentric orbit by a close stellar encounter and is later accreted by the white dwarf. We present numerical experiments aimed to study the correlation between the magnetic field strength, B, and the density, n, in the cold atomic interstellar medium (CNM). We analyse 24 magnetohydrodynamic models with different initial magnetic field intensities (B0 = 0.4, 2.1, 4.2, and 8.3 $\mu$ G) and/or mean densities (2, 3, and 4 cm−3), in the presence of driven and decaying turbulence, with and without self-gravity, in a cubic computational domain with 100 pc by side. Our main findings are as follows: (i) For forced simulations that reproduce the main observed physical conditions of the CNM in the solar neighbourhood, a positive correlation between B and n develops for all the B0 values. (ii) The density at which this correlation becomes significant (≲30 cm−3) depends on B0 but is not sensitive to the presence of self-gravity. (iii) The effect of self-gravity, when noticeable, consists of producing a shallower correlation at high densities, suggesting that, in the studied regime, self-gravity induces motions along the field lines. (iv) Self-gravitating decaying models where the CNM is subsonic and sub-Alfvénic with β ≲ 1 develop a high-density positive correlation whose slopes are consistent with a constant β(n). (v) Decaying models where the low-density CNM is subsonic and sub-Alfvénic with β > 1 show a negative correlation at intermediate densities, followed by a high-density positive correlation. Aims. Ambipolar diffusion can cause a velocity drift between ions and neutrals. This is one of the non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) effects proposed to enable the formation of large-scale Keplerian disks with sizes of tens of au. To observationally study ambipolar diffusion in collapsing protostellar envelopes, we compare here gas kinematics traced by ionized and neutral molecular lines and discuss the implication on ambipolar diffusion. Methods. We analyzed the data of the H13CO+ (3–2) and C18O (2–1) emission in the Class 0 protostar B335 obtained with our ALMA observations. We constructed kinematical models to fit the velocity structures observed in the H13CO+ and C18O emission and to measure the infalling velocities of the ionized and neutral gas on a 100 au scale in B335. Results. A central compact (~1′′–2′′) component that is elongated perpendicular to the outflow direction and exhibits a clear velocity gradient along the outflow direction is observed in both lines and most likely traces the infalling flattened envelope. With our kinematical models, the infalling velocities in the H13CO+ and C18O emission are both measured to be 0.85 ± 0.2 km s−1 at a radius of 100 au, suggesting that the velocity drift between the ionized and neutral gas is at most 0.3 km s−1 at a radius of 100 au in B335. Conclusions. The Hall parameter for H13CO+ is estimated to be ≫1 on a 100 au scale in B335, so that H13CO+ is expected to be attached to the magnetic field. Our non-detection or upper limit of the velocity drift between the ionized and neutral gas could suggest that the magnetic field remains rather well coupled to the bulk neutral material on a 100 au scale in this source, and that any significant field-matter decoupling, if present, likely occurs only on a smaller scale, leading to an accumulation of magnetic flux and thus efficient magnetic braking in the inner envelope. This result is consistent with the expectation from the MHD simulations with a typical ambipolar diffusivity and those without ambipolar diffusion. On the other hand, the high ambipolar drift velocity of 0.5–1.0 km s−1 on a 100 au scale predicted in the MHD simulations with an enhanced ambipolar diffusivity by removing small dust grains, where the minimum grain size is 0.1 μm, is not detected in our observations. However, because of our limited angular resolution, we cannot rule out a significant ambipolar drift only in the midplane of the infalling envelope. Future observations with higher angular resolutions (~0. ′′1) are needed to examine this possibility and ambipolar diffusion on a smaller scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deriving the Faraday rotation measure (RM) of quasar absorption line systems, which are tracers of high-redshift galaxies intervening background quasars, is a powerful tool for probing magnetic fields in distant galaxies. Statistically comparing the RM distributions of two quasar samples, with and without absorption line systems, allows one to infer magnetic field properties of the intervening galaxy population. Here, we have derived the analytical form of the probability distribution function (PDF) of RM produced by a single galaxy with an axisymmetric large-scale magnetic field. We then further determine the PDF of RM for one random sight line traversing each galaxy in a population with a large-scale magnetic field prescription. We find that the resulting PDF of RM is dominated by a Lorentzian with a width that is directly related to the mean axisymmetric large-scale field strength 〈B0〉 of the galaxy population if the dispersion of B0 within the population is smaller than 〈B0〉. Provided that RMs produced by the intervening galaxies have been successfully isolated from other RM contributions along the line of sight, our simple model suggests that 〈B0〉 in galaxies probed by quasar absorption line systems can be measured within ≈50 per cent accuracy without additional constraints on the magneto-ionic medium properties of the galaxies. Finally, we discuss quasar sample selection criteria that are crucial to reliably interpret observations, and argue that within the limitations of the current data base of absorption line systems, high-metallicity damped Lyman-α absorbers are best suited to study galactic dynamo action in distant disc galaxies. To contribute to the understanding of the magnetic field's influence on the segregation of cold neutral medium (CNM) in the solar neighbourhood we analyse magnetohydrodynamic simulations that include themain physical characteristics of the local neutral atomic interstellar medium. The simulations have a continuous solenoidal Fourier forcing in a periodic box of 100 pc per side and an initial uniform magnetic field (B0) with intensities ranging between ~0.4 and ~8 μG. Our main results are as follows. (i) The CNM mass fraction diminishes with the increase in magnetic field intensity. (ii) There is a preferred alignment between CNM structures and B in all our B0 range but the preference weakens as B0 increases. It is worth noticing that this preference is also present in two-dimensional projections making an extreme angle (0 or π/2) with respect to B0 and it is only lost for the strongest magnetic field when the angle of projection is perpendicular to B0. (iii) The aforementioned results are prevalent despite the inclusion of self-gravity in our continuously forced simulations with a mean density similar to the average value of the solar neighbourhood. (iv) Given a fixed B0 and slightly higher mean densities, up to double, the effects of self-gravity are still not qualitatively significant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We made R-band polarization measurements of 234 stars towards the direction of the MBM 33-39 cloud complex. The distance of theMBM33--39 complexwas determined as 120±10 pc using polarization results and near-infrared photometry from the 2MASS survey. The magnetic field geometry of the individual clouds inferred from our polarimetric results reveals that the field lines are in general consistent with the global magnetic field geometry of the region obtained from previous studies. This implies that the clouds in the complex are permeated by the interstellar magnetic field. Multi-wavelength polarization measurements of a few stars projected on to the complex suggest that the size of the dust grains in these clouds is similar to those found in the normal interstellar medium of the Milky Way. We studied a possible formation scenario of the MBM 33-39 complex by combining the polarization results from our study with those from the literature and by identifying the distribution of ionized, atomic and molecular (dust) components of material in the region. Context. The interstellar medium (ISM) is now widely acknowledged to display features ascribable to magnetized turbulence. With the public release of Planck data and the current balloon-borne and ground-based experiments, the growing amount of data tracing the polarized thermal emission from Galactic dust in the submillimetre provides choice diagnostics to constrain the properties of this magnetized turbulence. Aims. We aim to constrain these properties in a statistical way, focussing in particular on the power spectral index βB of the turbulent component of the interstellar magnetic field in a diffuse molecular cloud, the Polaris Flare. Methods. We present an analysis framework based on simulating polarized thermal dust emission maps using model dust density (proportional to gas density nH) and magnetic field cubes, integrated along the line of sight (LOS), and comparing these statistically to actual data. The model fields are derived from fractional Brownian motion (fBm) processes, which allows a precise control of their one- and two-point statistics. The parameters controlling the model are (1)–(2) the spectral indices of the density and magnetic field cubes, (3)–(4) the RMS-to-mean ratios for both fields, (5) the mean gas density, (6) the orientation of the mean magnetic field in the plane of the sky (POS), (7) the dust temperature, (8) the dust polarization fraction, and (9) the depth of the simulated cubes. We explore the nine-dimensional parameter space through a Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis, which yields best-fitting parameters and associated uncertainties. Results. We find that the power spectrum of the turbulent component of the magnetic field in the Polaris Flare molecular cloud scales with wavenumber as k−βB with a spectral index βB = 2.8 ± 0.2. It complements a uniform field whose norm in the POS is approximately twice the norm of the fluctuations of the turbulent component, and whose position angle with respect to the north-south direction is χ0 ≈−69°. The density field nH is well represented by a log-normally distributed field with a mean gas density 〈nH〉≈40 cm−3 $\left\langle{n_{\mathrm{H}}}\right\rangle \approx 40\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ 〈 n H 〉 ≈ 40   cm − 3 , a fluctuation ratio σnH/〈nH〉≈1.6 $\sigma_{{n_{\mathrm{H}}}}/\langle{n_{\mathrm{H}}}\rangle\approx 1.6$ σ n H / 〈 n H 〉 ≈ 1.6 , and a power spectrum with an index βn=1.7−0.3+0.4 $\beta_n=1.7^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ β n = 1.7 − 0.3 + 0.4 . We also constrain the depth of the cloud to be d ≈ 13 pc, and the polarization fraction p0 ≈ 0.12. The agreement between the Planck data and the simulated maps for these best-fitting parameters is quantified by a χ2 value that is only slightly larger than unity. Conclusions. We conclude that our fBm-based model is a reasonable description of the diffuse, turbulent, magnetized ISM in the Polaris Flare molecular cloud, and that our analysis framework is able to yield quantitative estimates of the statistical properties of the dust density and magnetic field in this cloud. Context. Efforts to compare polarization measurements with synthetic observations from magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) models have previously concentrated on the scale of molecular clouds. Aims. We extend the model comparisons to kiloparsec scales, taking into account hot shocked gas generated by supernovae and a non-uniform dynamo-generated magnetic field at both large and small scales down to 4 pc spatial resolution. Methods. We used radiative transfer calculations to model dust emission and polarization on top of MHD simulations. We computed synthetic maps of column density NH, polarization fraction p, and polarization angle dispersion S, and studied their dependencies on important properties of MHD simulations. These include the large-scale magnetic field and its orientation, the small-scale magnetic field, and supernova-driven shocks. Results. Similar filament-like structures of S as seen in the Planck all-sky maps are visible in our synthetic results, although the smallest scale structures are absent from our maps. Supernova-driven shock fronts and S do not show significant correlation. Instead, S can clearly be attributed to the distribution of the small-scale magnetic field. We also find that the large-scale magnetic field influences the polarization properties, such that, for a given strength of magnetic fluctuation, a strong plane of the sky mean field weakens the observed S, while strengthening p. The anticorrelation of p and S, and decreasing p as a function of NH are consistent across all synthetic observations. The magnetic fluctuations follow an exponential distribution, rather than Gaussian characteristic of flows with intermittent repetitive shocks. Conclusions. The observed polarization properties and column densities are sensitive to the line-of-sight distance over which the emission is integrated. Studying synthetic maps as the function of maximum integration length will further help with the interpretation of observations. The effects of the large-scale magnetic field orientation on the polarization properties are difficult to be quantified from observations solely, but MHD models might turn out to be useful for separating the effect of the large-scale mean field. Modern observatories of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) have collected over 104 events with energies above 10 EeV, whose arrival directions appear to be nearly isotropically distributed. On the other hand, the distribution of matter in the nearby Universe - and therefore presumably also that of UHECR sources - is not homogeneous. This is expected to leave an imprint on the angular distribution of UHECR arrival directions, though deflections by cosmic magnetic fields can confound the picture. In this work, we investigate quantitatively this apparent inconsistency. To this end we study observables sensitive to UHECR source inhomogeneities but robust to uncertainties on magnetic fields and the UHECR mass composition. We show, in a rather model-independent way, that if the source distribution tracks the overall matter distribution, the arrival directions at energies above 30 EeV should exhibit a sizeable dipole and quadrupole anisotropy, detectable by UHECR observatories in the very near future. Were it not the case, one would have to seriously reconsider the present understanding of cosmic magnetic fields and/or the UHECR composition. Also, we show that the lack of a strong quadrupole moment above 10 EeV in the current data already disfavours a pure proton composition, and that in the very near future measurements of the dipole and quadrupole moment above 60 EeV will be able to provide evidence about the UHECR mass composition at those energies. We present a large suite of simulations of the formation of low-mass star clusters. Our simulations include an extensive set of physical processes - magnetohydrodynamics, radiative transfer, and protostellar outflows - and span a wide range of virial parameters and magnetic field strengths. Comparing the outcomes of our simulations to observations, we find that simulations remaining close to virial balance throughout their history produce star formation efficiencies and initial mass function (IMF) peaks that are stable in time and in reasonable agreement with observations. Our results indicate that small-scale dissipation effects near the protostellar surface provide a feedback loop for stabilizing the star formation efficiency. This is true regardless of whether the balance is maintained by input of energy from largescale forcing or by strong magnetic fields that inhibit collapse. In contrast, simulations that leave virial balance and undergo runaway collapse form stars too efficiently and produce an IMF that becomes increasingly top heavy with time. In all cases, we find that the competition between magnetic flux advection towards the protostar and outward advection due to magnetic interchange instabilities, and the competition between turbulent amplification and reconnection close to newly formed protostars renders the local magnetic field structure insensitive to the strength of the large-scale field, ensuring that radiation is always more important than magnetic support in setting the fragmentation scale and thus the IMFpeak mass. The statistics ofmultiple stellar systems are similarly insensitive to variations in the initial conditions and generally agree with observations within the range of statistical uncertainty. The polarization properties of radio sources at very low frequencies (<200 MHz) have not been widely measured, but the new generation of low-frequency radio telescopes, including the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR: a Square Kilometre Array Low pathfinder), now gives us the opportunity to investigate these properties. In this paper, we report on the preliminary development of a data reduction pipeline to carry out polarization processing and Faraday tomography for data from the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey (LOTSS) and present the results of this pipeline from the LOTSS preliminary data release region (10h45m-15h30m right ascension, 45°-57° declination, 570 square degrees). We have produced a catalog of 92 polarized radio sources at 150 MHz at 4:03 resolution and 1 mJy rms sensitivity, which is the largest catalog of polarized sources at such low frequencies. We estimate a lower limit to the polarized source surface density at 150 MHz, with our resolution and sensitivity, of 1 source per 6.2 square degrees. We find that our Faraday depth measurements are in agreement with previous measurements and have significantly smaller errors. Most of our sources show significant depolarization compared to 1.4 GHz, but there is a small population of sources with low depolarization indicating that their polarized emission is highly localized in Faraday depth. We predict that an extension of this work to the full LOTSS data would detect at least 3400 polarized sources using the same methods, and probably considerably more with improved data processing. We investigate collisions between giant molecular clouds (GMCs) as potential generators of their internal turbulence. Using magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of self-gravitating, magnetized, turbulent GMCs, we compare kinematic and dynamic properties of dense gas structures formed when such clouds collide compared to those that form in non-colliding clouds as self-gravity overwhelms decaying turbulence. We explore the nature of turbulence in these structures via distribution functions of density, velocity dispersions, virial parameters, and momentum injection. We find that the dense clumps formed from GMC collisions have higher effective Mach number, greater overall velocity dispersions, sustain near-virial equilibrium states for longer times, and are the conduit for the injection of turbulent momentum into high density gas at high rates. The motion of diamagnetic dust particles in interstellar magnetic fields is studied numerically with several different sets of parameters. Two types of behaviour are observed, depending on the value of the critical number R, which is a function of the grain inertia, the magnetic susceptibility of the material and of the strength of rotation braking. If R ≤ 10, the grain ends up in a static state and perfectly aligned with the magnetic field, after a few braking times. If not, it goes on precessing and nutating about the field vector for a much longer time. Usual parameters are such that the first situation can hardly be observed. Fortunately, in the second and more likely situation, there remains a persistent partial alignment that is far from negligible, although it decreases as the field decreases and as R increases. The solution of the complete equations of motion of grains in a field helps understanding the details of this behaviour. One particular case of an ellipsoidal forsterite silicate grain is studied in detail and shown to polarize light in agreement with astronomical measurements of absolute polarization in the infrared. Phonons are shown to contribute to the progressive flattening of extinction and polarization towards long wavelengths. The measured dielectric properties of forsterite qualitatively fit the Serkowski peak in the visible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We extend the use of the Tsallis statistic to measure the differences in gas dynamics relative to the mean magnetic field present from natural eddy-type motions existing in magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) turbulence. The variation in gas dynamics was estimated using the Tsallis parameters on the incremental probability distribution function of the observables (intensity and velocity centroid) obtained from compressible MHD simulations. We find that the Tsallis statistic is susceptible to the anisotropy produced by the magnetic field, even when anisotropy is present the Tsallis statistic can be used to determine MHD parameters such as the Sonic Mach number.We quantize the goodness of the Tsallis parameters using the coefficient of determination to measure the differences in the gas dynamics. These parameters also determine the level of magnetization and compressibility of the medium. To further simulate realistic spectroscopic observational data, we introduced smoothing, noise, and cloud boundaries to the MHD simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We simulate the propagation of cosmic rays at ultra-high energies, ≳1018 eV, in models of extragalactic magnetic fields in constrained simulations of the local Universe. We use constrained initial conditions with the cosmological magnetohydrodynamics code ENZO. The resulting models of the distribution of magnetic fields in the local Universe are used in the CRPROPA code to simulate the propagation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. We investigate the impact of six different magneto-genesis scenarios, both primordial and astrophysical, on the propagation of cosmic rays over cosmological distances. Moreover, we study the influence of different source distributions around the Milky Way. Our study shows that different scenarios of magneto-genesis do not have a large impact on the anisotropy measurements of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. However, at high energies above the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK)-limit, there is anisotropy caused by the distribution of nearby sources, independent of the magnetic field model. This provides a chance to identify cosmic ray sources with future full-sky measurements and high number statistics at the highest energies. Finally, we compare our results to the dipole signal measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory. All our source models and magnetic field models could reproduce the observed dipole amplitude with a pure iron injection composition. Our results indicate that the dipole is observed due to clustering of secondary nuclei in direction of nearby sources of heavy nuclei. A light injection composition is disfavoured, since the increase in dipole angular power from 4 to 8 EeV is too slow compared to observation by the Pierre Auger Observatory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The interstellar medium (ISM) is a magnetized system in which transonic or supersonic turbulence is driven by supernova explosions. This leads to the production of intermittent, filamentary structures in the ISM gas density, whilst the associated dynamo action also produces intermittent magnetic fields. The traditional theory of random functions, restricted to secondorder statistical moments (or power spectra), does not adequately describe such systems. We apply topological data analysis (TDA), sensitive to all statistical moments and independent of the assumption of Gaussian statistics, to the gas density fluctuations in a magnetohydrodynamic simulation of the multiphase ISM. This simulation admits dynamo action, so produces physically realistic magnetic fields. The topology of the gas distribution, with and without magnetic fields, is quantified in terms of Betti numbers and persistence diagrams. Like the more standard correlation analysis, TDA shows that the ISM gas density is sensitive to the presence of magnetic fields. However, TDA gives us important additional information that cannot be obtained from correlation functions. In particular, the Betti numbers per correlation cell are shown to be physically informative. Magnetic fields make the ISMmore homogeneous, reducing the abundance of both isolated gas clouds and cavities, with a stronger effect on the cavities. Remarkably, the modification of the gas distribution by magnetic fields is captured by the Betti numbers even in regions more than 300 pc from the mid-plane, where the magnetic field is weaker and correlation analysis fails to detect any signatures of magnetic effects. Magnetic fields play important roles in many astrophysical processes. However, there is no universal diagnostic for the magnetic fields in the interstellarmedium (ISM) and each magnetic tracer has its limitation. Any new detection method is thus valuable. Theoretical studies have shown that submillimetre fine-structure lines are polarized due to atomic alignment by ultraviolet photon-excitation, which opens up a new avenue to probe interstellar magnetic fields. We will, for the first time, perform synthetic observations on the simulated threedimensional ISM to demonstrate the measurability of the polarization of submillimetre atomic lines. The maximum polarization for different absorption and emission lines expected from various sources, including star-forming regions are provided. Our results demonstrate that the polarization of submillimetre atomic lines is a powerful magnetic tracer and add great value to the observational studies of the submilimetre astronomy. The origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) remains elusive. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are among the best candidates able to meet the stringent energy requirements needed for particle acceleration to such high energies. If UHECRs were accelerated by the central engine of GRB 221009A, it might be possible to detect secondary photons and neutrinos as the UHECRs travel from the source to the Earth. Here, we attempt to interpret some of the early publicly available data connected to this burst. If the reported early GeV-TeV detection was produced by secondary emission from UHECRs, it probably indicates that UHECRs reached energies >1021 eV and that GRB 221009A exploded inside a magnetic void with intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) strength B ≤ 3 × 10−16 G. In order to understand the entire energy deposition mechanism, we propose to search existing and future Fermi -LAT data for secondary emission arriving over larger spatial scales and longer time-scales. This strategy might help clarify the origin of UHECRs, constrain the IGMF strength along this line of sight, and start to quantify the fraction of magnetic voids around GRBs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
