Abstract

Recent prediction of Akaishi and Yamazaki on the strongly bound kaonic nuclear states with remarkably narrow widths have generated a lot of physics interests and the states have been studied and discussed intensively [1]. The fundamental motivation behind such intense study was that on one hand they could give us the excellent opportunities to investigate dense and cold hadronic systems in which quarks may be deconfined and the partial restoration of the chiral symmetry is expected to occur in a large scale [2], on the other hand the existence itself with such narrow width is extremely peculiar and interesting. Since then, the states have been studied in a series of experiments at BNL [3], KEK [4,5], GSI [6] and LNF [7]. We have recently reported an indication of a strange tribaryon state, S+, with a width Γ < 23 MeV/c2, in the neutron time of flight (TOF) spectrum of the 4He(Kstop− , n) reaction in the KEK-PS E471 which was the first experiment at KEK-PS to search for the deeply bound narrow K−ppn (T=0) state [4]. In order to confirm the state, S+, and search for other possible total isospin T=0/1 tribaryonic states, we have re-measured the neutron energy spectrum from 4He(Kstop− , n) reaction in the KEK-PS E549 experiment with the upgraded setup with which TOF resolution was improved 1.5 times and the statistics was increased 6 times. However, in the neutron spectra, we find such a smooth momentum distribution that we conclude the state either not so strong to stick out of the inclusive background or too broad to form a peak. Abstract

Breakup reactions were used to study the ground-state configuration of the neutron-rich isotope 23O. The 22O fragments produced in one-nucleon removal from 23O at 938 MeV/nucleon in a carbon target were detected in coincidence with de-exciting λ rays, allowing to discern between 22O ground-state and excited-states contributions. From the comparison of exclusive experimental momentum distributions for the one-neutron removal channel to theoretical momentum distributions calculated in an Eikonal model for the knockout process, and spin and parity assignment of Iπ = 1/2+ was deduced for the 23O ground state. Abstract

New intense muon beams with flux several orders of magnitude higher than at present muon facilities would allow many novel experimental studies that were until now statistically not feasible. The investigation of the nuclear properties of short-lived nuclei using muonic atom spectroscopy would become possible. In this paper, the recent progress of a feasibility study at RIKEN-RAL muon facility using the cold hydrogen film method to produce radioactive muonic atoms is being reported. Abstract

The goal of the DEAR (DAΦNE Exotic Atom Research) experiment is the precision measurement of the Kα line shift and width, due to the strong interaction, in kaonic hydrogen and the first similar measurement in kaonic deuterium. The final aim is a precision determination of the antikaon-nucleon isospin dependent scattering lengths, in order to obtain the kaon nucleon sigma terms. In the first phase of the experiment, dedicated to the calibration and optimization of the setup, the experiment collected data on gaseous kaonic nitrogen: for the first time a pattern of three transitions (7 → 6 at 4.6 keV, 6 → 5 at 7.6 keV and 5 → 4 at 14 keV) was measured, and the corresponding yields obtained. The kaonic hydrogen measurement followed, in the last months of 2002, for a total integrated luminosity of about 60 pb-1 . Data analyses are in progress, preliminary results being hereby presented, together with those on kaonic nitrogen. Future measurements: kaonic deuterium, kaonic helium and precise determination of the charged kaon mass are planned in the framework of the SIDDHARTA (SIlicon Drift Detector for Hadronic Atoms Research by Timing Application) experiment, which will replace DEAR on DAΦNE. Abstract

One-nucleon removal reactions at relativistic energies have been used as spectroscopic tool to obtain information about the ground state properties of several neutron-rich isotopes in the sd-shell. Using the FRS at GSI, the longitudinal momentum distributions of the emerging fragments after one-nucleon removal cross-sections were measured. The relative contributions of the remaining fragments in their ground and excited states have been determined from measurements of γ rays in coincidence with the longitudinal momentum distributions. The interesting case of 23O will be directly address. The interpretation of our experimental results in the framework of a simple theoretical model will favours a spin and parity assignment of 1/2+ for the 23O ground state in agreement with shell model predictions. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have measured a proton energy from the stopped K- reaction on 4He to search for strange tribaryon states at KEK 12 GeV PS. No statistically significant signal was observed in the missing mass spectrum obtained by the inclusive 4He(stopped K-, p) measurement. Upper limits of the formation branching ratio at the 95 % C.L. were derived for neutral tribaryon states with strangeness -1 to be (0.4 ~ 6) × 10-4, (0.2 ~ 6) × 10-3 and (0.06 ~ 5) × 10-2/(stopped K-) for assumed natural widths of 0, 20 and 40 MeV/c2, respectively. Abstract

We have measured the Balmer-series x-rays of kaonic 4He atoms using large-area silicon drift x-ray detectors (SDDs) in order to study the low-energy $\bar{K}$-nucleus strong interaction. The energy of the 3d → 2p transition was determined to be 6467 ± 3(stat) ± 2(syst) eV. The resulting strong-interaction energy-level shift is in agreement with theoretical calculations, thus eliminating a long-standing discrepancy between theory and experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have investigated non-mesonic reactions of the stopped K− on 4He in terms of correlations of coincident ΛN pairs. As the result, Λp and Λn branches of the two-nucleon absorption process were clearly observed in the ΛN invariant mass spectra. Abstract

Tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA) and cancer antigen 125 (CA125) were studied immunohistochemically by the avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase technique in human and cynomolgus monkey placentae, membranes, umbilical cords and decidua. In early human placentae, TPA was localized mainly in the cell membranes of villous syncytio- and cyto-trophoblast. The cytoplasm of those trophoblastic cells were weakly stained with TPA. The membrane of basal chorionic trophoblast cells was strongly stained with TPA and the cytoplasm stained weakly. In early cynomolgus placentae, similar immunostaining results were obtained. However, the positive stainings for TPA was more marked in the cytoplasm of villous syncytiotrophoblast and basal chorionic trophoblast, and less marked in the cell membrane of villous cytotrophoblast. In early human and cynomolgus placentae, CA125 was not demonstrated immunohistochemically in the villi and basal chorion. In human and cynomolgus term placentae, the villous syncytiotrophoblast and basal and reflected chorionic trophoblast showed similar immunostaining as the early placentae. In addition, TPA was found in the amniotic epithelium in both sorts of placentae. TPA was not detected immunohistochemically in the umbilical cord and decidual cells. While weakly positive stains for CA125 were observed in decidual cells, CA125 was localized mainly in the membrane and cytoplasm of amniotic epithelium in both human and cynomolgus term placentae. TPA and CA125 are thus oncoplacental antigens and the monkey could serve as a model for their investigation.

Abstract

Using conventional radioimmunoassay kits, we measured concentrations of two cancer-related antigens, tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA) and cancer antigen 125 (CA125) throughout gestation and at delivery. The maternal serum was collected from 147 pregnant women between 5 and 43 weeks gestation and 27 women were studied at delivery at which time samples of maternal blood, umbilical artery and vein blood as well as amniotic fluid were collected. The various concentrations of TPA and CA125 were compared with placental weight and infant birth weight. The results are summarized as follows:(1)Mean TPA levels in maternal serum increased with advancing gestation and rose above 110 U/l (upper non-pregnant limit) from 35 weeks onwards. Mean CA125 levels rose above 35 U/ml (normal non-pregnant upper limit) before 9 weeks gestation and thereafter fell. Both levels were markedly raised immediately after delivery.(2)In umbilical artery and vein serum, mean TPA levels were slightly raised. However, there were no significant differences between TPA levels in maternal serum and matched serum from the umbilical artery and vein. Mean umbilical CA125 levels were below 35 U/ml, while mean CA125 levels were significantly higher in the corresponding maternal serum.(3)The concentrations of TPA and CA125 were extremely high in amniotic fluid. The mean values reached 3604 U/l and 2187 U/ml, respectively.(4)None of the concentrations of TPA and CA125 in those pregnancy-related body fluids correlated significantly with birth weight, placental weight or fetal sex.

Abstract

In a reconstituted system containing NADPH, dilauroyl-L-3-phosphatidylcholine, and NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase purified from rat liver microsomes, cytochrome P-450 (P-450 HFLa) purified from human fetal livers catalyzed the 16 alpha-hydroxylation of dehydroepiandrosterone 3-sulfate (DHEA-sulfate). Addition of cytochrome b5 purified from rat liver microsomes to the reconstituted system resulted in a remarkable increase in the hydroxylase activity. The level of P-450 HFLa in liver homogenates from human fetuses highly correlated with the activity of DHEA-sulfate 16 alpha-hydroxylase. Antibodies to P-450 HFLa inhibited the 16 alpha-hydroxylation of DHEA-sulfate in a dose-dependent manner. The NH2-terminal amino acid sequence of P-450 HFLa was similar to that of P-450NF (Beaune, P. H., Umbenhauer, D. R., Bork, R. W., Lloyd, R. S., and Guengerich, F. P. (1986) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 83, 8064-8068). We conclude that P-450 HFLa is a form of cytochrome P-450 involved in the 16 alpha-hydroxylation of DHEA-sulfate.

Abstract

The analysis method developed for kaonic nitrogen X-ray data obtained at the DAΦNE electron–positron collider of Frascati National Laboratories using Charge-Coupled Devices (CCDs) in the DEAR experimental setup is described. Background events could be highly rejected by this analysis procedure. Three sequential X-ray lines from kaonic nitrogen transitions, showing good energy resolution, could be clearly identified, and the yields measured for the first time.

Abstract

The DEAR (DAΦNE exotic atom research) experiment measured the energy of x rays emitted in the transitions to the ground state of kaonic hydrogen. The measured values for the shift ε and the width Γ of the 1s state due to the K⁻p strong interaction are ε1s=-193±37 (stat) ±6 (syst) eV and Γ1s=249±111 (stat) ±30 (syst) eV, the most precise values yet obtained. The pattern of the kaonic hydrogen K-series lines, Kα, Kβ, and Kγ, was disentangled for the first time.

Abstract

The goal of the DEAR (DAΦNE exotic atom research) experiment is the precise determination of the isospin dependent antikaon–nucleon scattering lengths. The experiment accurately measures the Kα line shift and broadening, due to the strong interaction, in kaonic hydrogen and, for the first time, in kaonic deuterium. A precision measurement of kaonic hydrogen tests chiral symmetry breaking in systems with strangeness. An initial analysis of the DEAR experiment yields a shift ε1s=−195±45 eV and a width Γ1s=250±125 eV, which is more precise than the previous kaonic X-ray experiment KpX at KEK, and allows for the first time to disentangle the full pattern of the kaonic hydrogen K-series line Kα, Kβ and Kγ.

Abstract

The first measurement of the yields of three kaonic nitrogen X-ray transitions, using the DEAR (DAΦNE Exotic Atom Research) setup at the DAΦNE collider of Frascati, is reported. The yields are 41.5±8.7(stat.)±4.1(sys.)% for the n=7→6 transition, 55.0±3.9(stat.)±5.5(sys.)% for the n=6→5 transition and 57.4±15.2(stat.)±5.7(sys.)% for the n=5→4 transition at a density ρ=3.4ρNTP. By using the experimental yields in an atomic cascade calculation, a 1 to 3% K-shell electron population in the n=6 level was deduced.
