We report the discovery of the closest known black hole candidate as a binary companion to V723 Mon. V723 Mon is a nearby ($d\sim460\,\rm pc$), bright ($V\simeq8.3$~mag), evolved ($T_{\rm eff, giant}\simeq4440$~K, and $L_{\rm giant}\simeq173~L_\odot$) red giant in a high mass function, $f(M)=1.72\pm 0.01~M_\odot$, nearly circular binary ($P=59.9$ d, $e\simeq 0$). V723 Mon is a known variable star, previously classified as an eclipsing binary, but its All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS), Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope (KELT), and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) light curves are those of a nearly edge-on ellipsoidal variable. Detailed models of the light curves constrained by the period, radial velocities and stellar temperature give an inclination of $87.0^\circ{}^{+1.7^{\circ}}_{-1.4^{\circ}} $, a mass ratio of $q\simeq0.33\pm0.02$, a companion mass of $M_{\rm comp}=3.04\pm0.06~M_\odot$, a stellar radius of $R_{\rm giant}=24.9\pm0.7~R_\odot$, and a giant mass of $M_{\rm giant}=1.00\pm0.07~ M_\odot$. We identify a likely non-stellar, diffuse veiling component with contributions in the $B$ and $V$-band of ${\sim}63\%$ and ${\sim}24\%$, respectively. The SED and the absence of continuum eclipses imply that the companion mass must be dominated by a compact object. We do observe eclipses of the Balmer lines when the dark companion passes behind the giant, but their velocity spreads are low compared to observed accretion disks. The X-ray luminosity of the system is $L_{\rm X}\simeq7.6\times10^{29}~\rm ergs~s^{-1}$, corresponding to $L/L_{\rm edd}{\sim}10^{-9}$. We explore the impact of outer stellar companions on the occurrence rate of giant planets detected with radial velocities. We searched for stellar and planetary companions to a volume-limited sample of solar-type stars within 25 pc. Using adaptive optics imaging from the Lick 3m and Palomar 200" Telescopes, we characterized the multiplicity of our sample stars, down to the bottom of the main sequence. With these data, we confirm field star multiplicity statistics from previous surveys. We combined three decades of radial velocity data from the California Planet Search with new RV data from Keck/HIRES and APF/Levy to search for planets in the same systems. Using an updated catalog of both stellar and planetary companions and injection/recovery tests to determine our sensitivity, we measured the occurrence rate of planets among the single and multiple star systems. We found that planets with masses of 0.1-10 $M_{Jup}$ and semi-major axes of 0.1-10 AU have an occurrence rate of $0.18^{+0.04}_{-0.03}$ planets per single star, and $0.12\pm0.04$ planets per binary primary. Only one planet-hosting binary system in our sample had a binary separation $<100$ AU, and none had a separation $<50$ AU. We found planet occurrence rates of $0.20^{+0.07}_{-0.06}$ planets per star for binaries with separation $a_B > 100$ AU, and $0.04^{+0.04}_{-0.02}$ planets per star for binaries with separation $a_B<100$ AU. The similarity in the planet occurrence rate around single stars and wide primaries implies that wide binary systems should host more planets than single star systems, since they have more potential host stars. We estimated a system-wide planet occurrence rate of 0.3 planets per wide binary system for binaries with separations $a_B > 100$ AU. Tracking is one of the most time consuming aspects of event reconstruction at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its high-luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). Innovative detector technologies extend tracking to four-dimensions by including timing in the pattern recognition and parameter estimation. However, present and future hardware already have additional information that is largely unused by existing track seeding algorithms. The shape of clusters provides an additional dimension for track seeding that can significantly reduce the combinatorial challenge of track finding. We use neural networks to show that cluster shapes can reduce significantly the rate of fake combinatorical backgrounds while preserving a high efficiency. We demonstrate this using the information in cluster singlets, doublets and triplets. Despite the severe bias of the transit method of exoplanet discovery toward short orbital periods, a modest sample of transiting exoplanets with orbital periods greater than 100 days is known. Long-term radial velocity (RV) surveys are pivotal to confirming these signals and generating a set of planetary masses and densities for planets receiving moderate to low irradiation from their host stars. Here, we conduct RV observations of Kepler-1514 from the Keck I telescope using the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer. From these data, we measure the mass of the statistically validated giant ($1.108\pm0.023$ $R_{\rm J}$) exoplanet Kepler-1514 b with a 218 day orbital period as $5.28\pm0.22$ $M_{\rm J}$. The bulk density of this cool ($\sim$390 K) giant planet is $4.82^{+0.26}_{-0.25}$ g cm$^{-3}$, consistent with a core supported by electron degeneracy pressure. We also infer an orbital eccentricity of $0.401^{+0.013}_{-0.014}$ from the RV and transit observations, which is consistent with planet-planet scattering and disk cavity migration models. The Kepler-1514 system contains an Earth-size, Kepler Object of Interest on a 10.5 day orbit that we statistically validate against false positive scenarios, including those involving a neighboring star. The combination of the brightness ($V$=11.8) of the host star and the long period, low irradiation, and high density of Kepler-1514 b places this system among a rare group of known exoplanetary systems and one that is amenable to continued study., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

It has been known for a decade that hot stars with hot Jupiters tend to have high obliquities. Less is known about the degree of spin-orbit alignment for hot stars with other kinds of planets. Here, we re-assess the obliquities of hot Kepler stars with transiting planets smaller than Neptune, based on spectroscopic measurements of their projected rotation velocities (vsini). The basis of the method is that a lower obliquity -- all other things being equal -- causes sini to be closer to unity and increases the value of vsini. We sought evidence for this effect using a sample of 150 Kepler stars with effective temperatures between 5950 and 6550K and a control sample of 101 stars with matching spectroscopic properties and random orientations. The planet hosts have systematically higher values of vsini than the control stars, but not by enough to be compatible with perfect spin-orbit alignment. The mean value of sini is 0.856 +/- 0.036, which is 4-sigma away from unity (perfect alignment), and 2-sigma away from pi/4 (random orientations). There is also evidence that the hottest stars have a broader obliquity distribution: when modeled separately, the stars cooler than 6250K have = 0.928 +/- 0.042, while the hotter stars are consistent with random orientations. This is similar to the pattern previously noted for stars with hot Jupiters. Based on these results, obliquity excitation for early-G and late-F stars appears to be a general outcome of star and planet formation, rather than being exclusively linked to hot Jupiter formation., Comment: AJ, in press [15 pages]

We present a transmission spectrum for the warm (500-600K) sub-Neptune HD3167c obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 infrared spectrograph. We combine these data, which span the 1.125-1.643 micron wavelength range, with broadband transit measurements made using Kepler/K2 (0.6-0.9 micron) and Spitzer/IRAC (4-5 micron). We find evidence for absorption by at least one of H2O, HCN, CO2, and CH4 (Bayes factor 7.4; 2.5-sigma significance), although the data precision does not allow us to unambiguously discriminate between these molecules. The transmission spectrum rules out cloud-free hydrogen-dominated atmospheres with metallicities <100x solar at >5.8-sigma confidence. In contrast, good agreement with the data is obtained for cloud-free models assuming metallicities >700x solar. However, for retrieval analyses that include the effect of clouds, a much broader range of metallicities (including subsolar) is consistent with the data, due to the degeneracy with cloud-top pressure. Self-consistent chemistry models that account for photochemistry and vertical mixing are presented for the atmosphere of HD3167c. The predictions of these models are broadly consistent with our abundance constraints, although this is primarily due to the large uncertainties on the latter. Interior structure models suggest the core mass fraction is >40%, independent of a rock or water core composition, and independent of atmospheric envelope metallicity up to 1000x solar. We report the discovery of a Neptune-like planet (LP 714-47 b, P = 4.05204 d, m_b = 30.8 +/- 1.5 M_earth , R_b = 4.7 +/- 0.3 R_earth ) located in the 'hot Neptune desert'. Confirmation of the TESS Object of Interest (TOI 442.01) was achieved with radial-velocity follow-up using CARMENES, ESPRESSO, HIRES, iSHELL, and PFS, as well as from photometric data using TESS, Spitzer, and ground-based photometry from MuSCAT2, TRAPPIST- South, MONET-South, the George Mason University telescope, the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope network, the El Sauce telescope, the TUBITAK National Observatory, the University of Louisville Manner Telescope, and WASP-South. We also present high-spatial resolution adaptive optics imaging with the Gemini Near-Infrared Imager. The low uncertainties in the mass and radius determination place LP 714-47 b among physically well-characterised planets, allowing for a meaningful comparison with planet structure models. The host star LP 714-47 is a slowly rotating early M dwarf (T_eff = 3950 +/- 51 K) with a mass of 0.59 +/- 0.02 M_sun and a radius of 0.58 +/- 0.02 R_sun. From long-term photometric monitoring and spectroscopic activity indicators, we determine a stellar rotation period of about 33 d. The stellar activity is also manifested as correlated noise in the radial-velocity data. In the power spectrum of the radial-velocity data, we detect a second signal with a period of 16 days in addition to the four-day signal of the planet. This could be shown to be a harmonic of the stellar rotation period or the signal of a second planet. We report the discovery by the ground-based HATNet survey of the transiting exoplanet HAT-P-68b, which has a mass of 0.724 $\pm$ 0.043 $M_{Jup}$, and radius of 1.072 $\pm$ 0.012 $R_{Jup}$. The planet is in a circular P = 2.2984-day orbit around a moderately bright V = 13.937 $\pm$ 0.030 magnitude K dwarf star of mass 0.673 $+$ 0.020 $-$0.014 $M_{\odot}$, and radius 0.6726 $\pm$ 0.0069 $R_{\odot}$. The planetary nature of this system is confirmed through follow-up transit photometry obtained with the FLWO~1.2m telescope, high-precision RVs measured using Keck-I/HIRES, FLWO~1.5m/TRES, and OHP~1.9m/Sophie, and high-spatial-resolution speckle imaging from WIYN~3.5m/DSSI. HAT-P-68 is at an ecliptic latitude of $+3^{\circ}$ and outside the field of view of both the NASA TESS primary mission and the K2 mission. The physical properties of faint stellar and substellar objects often rely on indirect, model-dependent estimates. For example, the masses of brown dwarfs are usually inferred using evolutionary models, which are age dependent and have yet to be properly calibrated. With the goal of identifying new benchmark objects to test low-mass stellar and substellar models, we have carried out a comprehensive adaptive optics survey as part of the TaRgetting bENchmark-objects with the Doppler Spectroscopy high-contrast imaging program. Using legacy radial velocity measurements from High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer at Keck, we have identified several dozen stars that show long-term Doppler accelerations. We present follow-up high-contrast observations from the campaign and report the discovery of 31 co-moving companions, as well as 11 strong candidate companions, to solar-type stars with well-determined parallax and metallicity values. Benchmark objects of this nature lend themselves to orbit determinations, dynamical mass estimates, and independent compositional assessment. This compendium of benchmark objects will serve as a convenient test group to substantiate theoretical evolutionary and atmospheric models near the hydrogen fusing limit., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures

K2 observations of the weak-lined T Tauri binary V928 Tau A+B show the detection of a single, asymmetric eclipse which may be due to a previously unknown substellar companion eclipsing one component of the binary with an orbital period $>$ 66 days. Over an interval of about 9 hours, one component of the binary dims by around 60%, returning to its normal brightness about 5 hours later. From modeling of the eclipse shape we find evidence that the eclipsing companion may be surrounded by a disk or a vast ring system. The modeled disk has a radius of $0.9923\,\pm\,0.0005\,R_*$, with an inclination of $56.78\,\pm\, 0.03^\circ$, a tilt of $41.22\,\pm\,0.05^\circ$, an impact parameter of $-0.2506\,\pm\,0.0002\,R_*$ and an opacity of 1.00. The occulting disk must also move at a transverse velocity of $6.637\,\pm\,0.002\,R_*\,\mathrm{day}^{-1}$, which depending on whether it orbits V928 Tau A or B, corresponds to approximately 73.53 or 69.26 $\mathrm{km s}^{-1}$. A search in ground based archival data reveals additional dimming events, some of which suggest periodicity, but no unambiguous period associated with the eclipse observed by K2. We present a new epoch of astrometry which is used to further refine the orbit of the binary, presenting a new lower bound of 67 years, and constraints on the possible orbital periods of the eclipsing companion. The binary is also separated by 18" ($\sim$2250 au) from the lower mass CFHT-BD-Tau 7, which is likely associated with V928 Tau A+B. Eclipsing binary systems with components that pulsate in gravity modes ($g$ modes) allow for simultaneous and independent constraints of the chemical mixing profiles of stars. We aim to assemble a sample of $g$-mode pulsators in detached eclipsing binaries with the purpose of finding good candidates for future evolutionary and asteroseismic modelling. In addition, we present a case study of the eclipsing binary KIC9850387, identified as our most promising candidate. We selected all of the detached eclipsing binaries in the Kepler eclipsing binary catalogue and performed a visual inspection to determine the presence and density of $g$ modes, and the presence of $g$-mode period-spacing patterns in their frequency spectra. We then characterised our sample based on their $g$-mode pulsational parameters and binary and atmospheric parameters. A spectroscopic follow-up of KIC9850387 was then performed. We then performed spectral disentangling followed by atmospheric modelling and abundance analysis for the primary star. We utilised an iterative approach to simultaneously optimise the pulsational and eclipse models, and subsequently performed an analysis of the pressure- ($p$-) and $g$-mode pulsational frequencies. We compiled a sample of 93 Kepler eclipsing binary stars with $g$-mode pulsating components and identified clear $g$-mode period-spacing patterns in the frequency spectra of seven of these systems. We found that the $g$-mode pulsational parameters and the binary and atmospheric parameters of our sample are weakly correlated at best. We find that the eclipsing binary KIC9850387 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary in a near-circular orbit with an intermediate-mass primary, and a solar-like secondary. We find $\ell=1$ and $\ell=2$ period-spacing patterns in the frequency spectrum of KIC9850387 spanning more than ten radial orders each., Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We report the discovery and characterisation of a super-Earth and a sub-Neptune transiting the bright ($K=8.8$), quiet, and nearby (37 pc) M3V dwarf TOI-1266. We validate the planetary nature of TOI-1266 b and c using four sectors of TESS photometry and data from the newly-commissioned 1-m SAINT-EX telescope located in San Pedro M\'artir (Mexico). We also include additional ground-based follow-up photometry as well as high-resolution spectroscopy and high-angular imaging observations. The inner, larger planet has a radius of $R=2.37_{-0.12}^{+0.16}$ R$_{\oplus}$ and an orbital period of 10.9 days. The outer, smaller planet has a radius of $R=1.56_{-0.13}^{+0.15}$ R$_{\oplus}$ on an 18.8-day orbit. The data are found to be consistent with circular, co-planar and stable orbits that are weakly influenced by the 2:1 mean motion resonance. Our TTV analysis of the combined dataset enables model-independent constraints on the masses and eccentricities of the planets. We find planetary masses of $M_\mathrm{p}$ = $13.5_{-9.0}^{+11.0}$ $\mathrm{M_{\oplus}}$ ($<36.8$ $\mathrm{M_{\oplus}}$ at 2-$\sigma$) for TOI-1266 b and $2.2_{-1.5}^{+2.0}$ $\mathrm{M_{\oplus}}$ ($<5.7$ $\mathrm{M_{\oplus}}$ at 2-$\sigma$) for TOI-1266 c. We find small but non-zero orbital eccentricities of $0.09_{-0.05}^{+0.06}$ ($<0.21$ at 2-$\sigma$) for TOI-1266 b and $0.04\pm0.03$ ($<0.10$ at 2-$\sigma$) for TOI-1266 c. The equilibrium temperatures of both planets are of $413\pm20$ K and $344\pm16$ K, respectively, assuming a null Bond albedo and uniform heat redistribution from the day-side to the night-side hemisphere. The host brightness and negligible activity combined with the planetary system architecture and favourable planet-to-star radii ratios makes TOI-1266 an exquisite system for a detailed characterisation., Comment: In press. HD 106315 and GJ 9827 are two bright, nearby stars that host multiple super-Earths and sub-Neptunes discovered by K2 that are well suited for atmospheric characterization. We refined the planets' ephemerides through Spitzer transits, enabling accurate transit prediction required for future atmospheric characterization through transmission spectroscopy. Through a multi-year high-cadence observing campaign with Keck/HIRES and Magellan/PFS, we improved the planets' mass measurements in anticipation of HST transmission spectroscopy. For GJ 9827, we modeled activity-induced radial velocity signals with a Gaussian process informed from the Calcium II H&K lines in order to more accurately model the effect of stellar noise on our data. We found planet masses of M$_b$=$4.87\pm 0.37$ M$_\oplus$, M$_c$=$1.92\pm 0.49$ M$_\oplus$, and M$_d$=$3.42\pm 0.62$ M$_\oplus$. For HD 106315, we found that such activity-radial velocity decorrelation was not effective due to the reduced presence of spots and speculate that this may extend to other hot stars as well (T$_{\rm {eff}}>6200$ K). We found planet masses of M$_b$=$10.5\pm 3.1$ M$_\oplus$ and M$_c$=$12.0\pm 3.8$ M$_\oplus$. We investigated all of the planets' compositions through comparing their masses and radii to a range of interior models. GJ 9827 b and GJ 9827 c are both consistent with an Earth-like rocky composition, GJ 9827 d and HD 106315 b both require additional volatiles and are consistent with moderate amounts of water or hydrogen/helium, and HD 106315 c is consistent with 10% hydrogen/helium surrounding an Earth-like rock and iron core.

We report the discovery of TOI-561, a multi-planet system in the galactic thick disk that contains a rocky, ultra-short period planet (USP). This bright ($V=10.2$) star hosts three small transiting planets identified in photometry from the NASA TESS mission: TOI-561 b (TOI-561.02, P=0.44 days, $R_b = 1.45\pm0.11\,R_\oplus$), c (TOI-561.01, P=10.8 days, $R_c=2.90\pm0.13\,R_\oplus$), and d (TOI-561.03, P=16.3 days, $R_d=2.32\pm0.16\,R_\oplus$). The star is chemically ([Fe/H]$=-0.41\pm0.05$, [$\alpha$/H]$=+0.23\pm0.05$) and kinematically consistent with the galactic thick disk population, making TOI-561 one of the oldest ($10\pm3\,$Gyr) and most metal-poor planetary systems discovered yet. We dynamically confirm planets b and c with radial velocities from the W. M. Keck Observatory High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer. Planet b has a mass and density of $3.2\pm0.8\,M_\oplus$ and $5.5^{+2.0}_{-1.6}\,$g$\,$cm$^{-3}$, consistent with a rocky composition. Its lower-than-average density is consistent with an iron-poor composition, although an Earth-like iron-to-silicates ratio is not ruled out. Planet c is $7.0\pm2.3\,M_\oplus$ and $1.6\pm0.6\,$g$\,$cm$^{-3}$, consistent with an interior rocky core overlaid with a low-mass volatile envelope. Several attributes of the photometry for planet d (which we did not detect dynamically) complicate the analysis, but we vet the planet with high-contrast imaging, ground-based photometric follow-up and radial velocities. Reaction-diffusion PDEs and particle-based stochastic reaction-diffusion (PBSRD) models are commonly-used approaches for modeling the spatial dynamics of chemical and biological systems. Standard reaction-diffusion PDE models ignore the underlying stochasticity of spatial transport and reactions, and are often described as appropriate in regimes where there are large numbers of particles in a system. Recent studies have proven the rigorous large-population limit of PBSRD models, showing the resulting mean-field models (MFM) correspond to non-local systems of partial-integro differential equations. In this work we explore the rigorous relationship between standard reaction-diffusion PDE models and the derived MFM. We prove that the former can be interpreted as an asymptotic approximation to the later in the limit that bimolecular reaction kernels are short-range and averaging. As the reactive interaction length scale approaches zero, we prove the MFMs converge at second order to standard reaction-diffusion PDE models. In proving this result we also establish local well-posedness of the MFM model in time for general systems, and global well-posedness for specific reaction systems and kernels. Finally, we illustrate the agreement and disagreement between the MFM, SM and the underlying particle model for several numerical examples.

We report the measurement of a spectroscopic transit of TOI-1726 c, one of two planets transiting a G-type star with $V$ = 6.9 in the Ursa Major Moving Group ($\sim$400 Myr). With a precise age constraint from cluster membership, TOI-1726 provides a great opportunity to test various obliquity excitation scenarios that operate on different timescales. By modeling the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect, we derived a sky-projected obliquity of $-1^{+35}_{-32}~^{\circ}$. This result rules out a polar/retrograde orbit; and is consistent with an aligned orbit for planet c. Considering the previously reported, similarly prograde RM measurement of planet b and the transiting nature of both planets, TOI-1726 tentatively conforms to the overall picture that compact multi-transiting planetary systems tend to have coplanar, likely aligned orbits. TOI-1726 is also a great atmospheric target for understanding differential atmospheric loss of sub-Neptune planets (planet b 2.2 $R_\oplus$ and c 2.7 $R_\oplus$ both likely underwent photoevaporation). The coplanar geometry points to a dynamically cold history of the system that simplifies any future modeling of atmospheric escape., Comment: Accepted to AJ

A neutrino community workshop was held at Fermilab in Jan 2020, with the aim of developing an implementation plan for a set of common interfaces to Neutrino Event Generators. This white paper summarizes discussions at the workshop and the resulting plan.

Planetary systems that show single-transit events are a critical pathway to increasing the yield of long-period exoplanets from transit surveys. From the primary Kepler mission, KIC 5951458b (Kepler-456b) was thought to be a single-transit giant planet with an orbital period of 1310 days. However, radial velocity (RV) observations of KIC 5951458 from the HIRES instrument on the Keck telescope suggest that the system is far more complicated. To extract precise RVs for this $V\approx13$ star, we develop a novel matched-template technique that takes advantage of a broad library of template spectra acquired with HIRES. We validate this technique and measure its noise floor to be 4 - 8 m s$^{-1}$ (in addition to internal RV error) for most stars that would be targeted for precision RVs. For KIC 5951458, we detect a long-term RV trend that suggests the existence of a stellar companion with an orbital period greater than a few thousand days. We also detect an additional signal in the RVs that is possibly caused by a planetary or brown dwarf companion with mass in the range of 0.6 - 82 $M_{\rm J}$ and orbital period below a few thousand days. Curiously, from just the data on hand, it is not possible to determine which object caused the single "transit" event. We propose a novel approach to intranuclear cascades which takes as input quantum MonteCarlo nuclear configurations and uses a semi-classical, impact-parameter based algorithm to modelthe propagation of protons and neutrons in the nuclear medium. Some of the most scientifically valuable transiting planets are those that were already known from radial velocity (RV) surveys. This is primarily because their orbits are well characterized and they preferentially orbit bright stars that are the targets of RV surveys. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite ({\it TESS}) provides an opportunity to survey most of the known exoplanet systems in a systematic fashion to detect possible transits of their planets. HD~136352 (Nu$^2$~Lupi) is a naked-eye ($V = 5.78$) G-type main-sequence star that was discovered to host three planets with orbital periods of 11.6, 27.6, and 108.1 days via RV monitoring with the HARPS spectrograph. We present the detection and characterization of transits for the two inner planets of the HD~136352 system, revealing radii of $1.482^{+0.058}_{-0.056}$~$R_\oplus$ and $2.608^{+0.078}_{-0.077}$~$R_\oplus$ for planets b and c, respectively. We combine new HARPS observations with RV data from Keck/HIRES and the AAT, along with {\it TESS} photometry from Sector 12, to perform a complete analysis of the system parameters. The combined data analysis results in extracted bulk density values of $\rho_b = 7.8^{+1.2}_{-1.1}$~gcm$^{-3}$ and $\rho_c = 3.50^{+0.41}_{-0.36}$~gcm$^{-3}$ for planets b and c, respectively, thus placing them on either side of the radius valley. An incoherent feed-forward loop (IFFL) is a network motif known for its ability to accelerate responses and generate pulses. Though functions of IFFLs are well studied, most previous computational analysis of IFFLs used ordinary differential equation (ODE) models where retroactivity, the effect downstream binding sites exert on the dynamics of an upstream transcription factor (TF), was not considered. It remains an open question to understand the behavior of IFFLs in contexts with high levels of retroactivity, e.g., in cells transformed/transfected with high-copy plasmids, or in eukaryotic cells where a TF binds to numerous high-affinity binding sites in addition to one or more functional target sites. Here we study the behavior of IFFLs by simulating and comparing ODE models with different levels of retroactivity. We find that increasing retroactivity in an IFFL can increase, decrease, or keep the network's response time and pulse amplitude constant. This suggests that increasing retroactivity, traditionally considered as an impediment to designing robust synthetic systems, could be exploited to improve the performance of IFFLs. We compare the behaviors of IFFLs to negative autoregulatory loops, another sign-sensitive response-accelerating network motif, and find that increasing retroactivity in a negative autoregulated circuit can only slow the response. The inability of a negative autoregulatory loop to flexibly handle retroactivity may have contributed to its lower abundance in eukaryotic relative to bacterial regulatory networks, a sharp contrast to the significant abundance of IFFLs in both cell types., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

We report the discovery and characterization of 7 transiting exoplanets from the HATNet survey. The planets, which are hot Jupiters and Saturns transiting bright sun-like stars, include: HAT-P-58b (with mass Mp = 0.37 MJ, radius Rp = 1.33 RJ, and orbital period P = 4.0138 days), HAT-P-59b (Mp = 1.54 MJ, Rp = 1.12 RJ, P = 4.1420 days), HAT-P-60b (Mp = 0.57 MJ, Rp = 1.63 RJ, P = 4.7948 days), HAT-P-61b (Mp = 1.06 MJ, Rp = 0.90 RJ, P = 1.9023 days), HAT-P-62b (Mp = 0.76 MJ, Rp = 1.07 RJ, P = 2.6453 days), HAT-P-63b (Mp = 0.61 MJ, Rp = 1.12 RJ, P = 3.3777 days), and HAT-P-64b (Mp = 0.58 MJ, Rp = 1.70 RJ, P = 4.0072 days). The typical errors on these quantities are 0.06 MJ, 0.03 RJ, and 0.2seconds, respectively. We also provide accurate stellar parameters for each of the hosts stars. With V = 9.710+/-0.050mag, HAT-P-60 is an especially bright transiting planet host, and an excellent target for additional follow-up observations. With Rp = 1.703+/-0.070 RJ, HAT-P-64b is a highly inflated hot Jupiter around a star nearing the end of its main-sequence lifetime, and is among the largest known planets. Five of the seven systems have long-cadence observations by TESS which are included in the analysis. Of particular note is HAT-P-59 (TOI-1826.01) which is within the Northern continuous viewing zone of the TESS mission, and HAT-P-60, which is the TESS candidate TOI-1580.01., Comment: Submitted to AJ. The first numerical implementation of a D-bar method in 3D using electrode data is presented. Results are compared to Calder\'on's method as well as more common TV and smoothness regularization-based methods. D-bar methods are based on tailor-made non-linear Fourier transforms involving the measured current and voltage data. Low-pass filtering in the non-linear Fourier domain is used to stabilize the reconstruction process. D-bar methods have shown great promise in 2D for providing robust real-time absolute and time-difference conductivity reconstructions but have yet to be used on practical electrode data in 3D, until now. Results are presented for simulated data for conductivity and permittivity with disjoint non-radially symmetric targets on spherical domains and noisy voltage data. The 3D D-bar and Calder\'on methods are demonstrated to provide comparable quality to their 2D CGO counterparts, and hold promise for real-time reconstructions., Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables

Uncovering the occurrence rate of terrestrial planets within the Habitable Zone (HZ) of their host stars has been a particular focus of exoplanetary science in recent years. The statistics of these occurrence rates have largely been derived from transiting planet discoveries, and have uncovered numerous HZ planets in compact systems around M dwarf host stars. Here we explore the width of the HZ as a function of spectral type, and the dynamical constraints on the number of stable orbits within the HZ for a given star. We show that, although the Hill radius for a given planetary mass increases with larger semi-major axis, the width of the HZ for earlier-type stars allows for more terrestrial planets in the HZ than late-type stars. In general, dynamical constraints allow $\sim$6 HZ Earth-mass planets for stellar masses $\gtrsim 0.7 M_\odot$, depending on the presence of farther out giant planets. As an example, we consider the case of Beta CVn, a nearby bright solar-type star. We present 20 years of radial velocities (RV) from the Keck/HIRES and APF instruments and conduct an injection-recovery analysis of planetary signatures in the data. Our analysis of these RV data rule out planets more massive than Saturn within 10~AU of the star. These system properties are used to calculate the potential dynamical packing of terrestrial planets in the HZ and show that such nearby stellar targets could be particularly lucrative for HZ planet detection by direct imaging exoplanet missions., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

We have conducted a search for artificial radio emission associated with the Kepler-160 system following the report of the discovery of the Earth-like planet candidate KOI-456.04 on 2020 June 4 (arXiv:1905.09038v2). Our search targeted both narrowband (2.97 Hz) drifting ($\pm 4$ Hz s$^{-1})$ and wideband pulsed (5 ms at all bandwidths) artificially-dispersed technosignatures using the turboSETI (arXiv:1709.03491v2) and SPANDAK pipelines, respectively, from 1-8 GHz. No candidates were identified above an upper limit Equivalent Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) of $5.9 \times 10^{14}$ W for narrowband emission and $7.3 \times 10^{12}$ W for wideband emission. Here we briefly describe our observations and data reduction procedure.

We present Breakthrough Listen's "Exotica" Catalog as the centerpiece of our efforts to expand the diversity of targets surveyed in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). As motivation, we introduce the concept of survey breadth, the diversity of objects observed during a program. Several reasons for pursuing a broad program are given, including increasing the chance of a positive result in SETI, commensal astrophysics, and characterizing systematics. The Exotica Catalog is a 963 entry collection of 816 distinct targets intended to include "one of everything" in astronomy. It contains four samples: the Prototype sample, with an archetype of every known major type of non-transient celestial object; the Superlative sample of objects with the most extreme properties; the Anomaly sample of enigmatic targets that are in some way unexplained; and the Control sample with sources not expected to produce positive results. As far as we are aware, this is the first object list in recent times with the purpose of spanning the breadth of astrophysics. We share it with the community in hopes that it can guide treasury surveys and as a general reference work. Accompanying the catalog is extensive discussion of classification of objects and a new classification system for anomalies. Extensive notes on the objects in the catalog are available online. We present a transmission spectrum for the Neptune-size exoplanet HD 106315 c from optical to infrared wavelengths based on transit observations from the Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3, K2, and Spitzer. The spectrum shows tentative evidence for a water absorption feature in the $1.1 - 1.7\mu$m wavelength range with a small amplitude of 30 ppm (corresponding to just $0.8 \pm 0.04$ atmospheric scale heights). Based on an atmospheric retrieval analysis, the presence of water vapor is tentatively favored with a Bayes factor of 1.7 - 2.6 (depending on prior assumptions). The spectrum is most consistent with either enhanced metallicity, high altitude condensates, or both. Cloud-free solar composition atmospheres are ruled out at $>5\sigma$ confidence. We compare the spectrum to grids of cloudy and hazy forward models and find that the spectrum is fit well by models with moderate cloud lofting or haze formation efficiency, over a wide range of metallicities ($1 - 100\times$ solar). We combine the constraints on the envelope composition with an interior structure model and estimate that the core mass fraction is $\gtrsim0.3$. With a bulk composition reminiscent of that of Neptune and an orbital distance of 0.15 AU, HD 106315 c hints that planets may form out of broadly similar material and arrive at vastly different orbits later in their evolution., Comment: Submitted to AAS journals; 19 pages, 12 figures

As it stands today, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) is highly dependent on our ability to detect interesting candidate signals, or technosignatures, in radio telescope observations and distinguish these from human radio frequency interference (RFI). Current signal search pipelines look for signals in spectrograms of intensity as a function of time and frequency (which can be thought of as images), but tend to do poorly in identifying multiple signals in a single data frame. This is especially apparent when there are dim signals in the same frame as bright, high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) signals. In this work, we approach this problem using convolutional neural networks (CNN) as a computationally efficient method for localizing signals in synthetic observations resembling data collected by Breakthrough Listen using the Green Bank Telescope. We generate two synthetic datasets, the first with exactly one signal at various SNR levels and the second with exactly two signals, one of which represents RFI. We find that a residual CNN with strided convolutions and using multiple image normalizations as input outperforms a more basic CNN with max pooling trained on inputs with only one normalization. Training each model on a smaller subset of the training data at higher SNR levels results in a significant increase in model performance, reducing root mean square errors by at least a factor of 3 at an SNR of 25 dB. Hot Jupiters seem to get rarer with decreasing stellar mass. The goal of the Pan-Planets transit survey was the detection of such planets and a statistical characterization of their frequency. Here, we announce the discovery and validation of two planets found in that survey, Wendelstein-1b and Wendelstein-2b, which are two short-period hot Jupiters that orbit late K host stars. We validated them both by the traditional method of radial velocity measurements with the HIgh Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) and the Habitable-zone Planet Finder (HPF) instruments and then by their Transit Color Signature (TraCS). We observed the targets in the wavelength range of $4000 - 24000$ Angstr\"om and performed a simultaneous multiband transit fit and additionally determined their thermal emission via secondary eclipse observations. Wendelstein-1b is a hot Jupiter with a radius of $1.0314_{-0.0061}^{+0.0061}$ $R_J$ and mass of $0.592_{-0.129}^{+0.165}$ $M_J$, orbiting a K7V dwarf star at a period of $2.66$ d, and has an estimated surface temperature of about $1727_{-90}^{+78}$ K. Wendelstein-2b is a hot Jupiter with a radius of $1.1592_{-0.0210}^{+0.0204}$ $R_J$ and a mass of $0.731_{-0.311}^{+0.541}$ $M_J$, orbiting a K6V dwarf star at a period of $1.75$ d, and has an estimated surface temperature of about $1852_{-140}^{+120}$ K. With this, we demonstrate that multiband photometry is an effective way of validating transiting exoplanets, in particular for fainter targets since radial velocity (RV) follow-up becomes more and more costly for those targets., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures. Asteroseismology is a powerful tool for probing the internal structures of stars by using their natural pulsation frequencies. It relies on identifying sequences of pulsation modes that can be compared with theoretical models, which has been done successfully for many classes of pulsators, including low-mass solar-type stars, red giants, high-mass stars and white dwarfs. However, a large group of pulsating stars of intermediate mass--the so-called delta Scuti stars--have rich pulsation spectra for which systematic mode identification has not hitherto been possible. This arises because only a seemingly random subset of possible modes are excited, and because rapid rotation tends to spoil the regular patterns. Here we report the detection of remarkably regular sequences of high-frequency pulsation modes in 60 intermediate-mass main-sequence stars, allowing definitive mode identification. In a companion paper, we have conducted an in-depth analysis of radial velocity jitter of over 600 stars, examining the astrophysical origins including stellar granulation, oscillation, and magnetic activity. In this paper, we highlight a subsample of those stars, specifically the main sequence and "retired" F stars -- which we refer to as "MSRF" stars -- that show low levels of RV jitter ($<10$ m/s). We describe the observational signatures of these stars that allow them to be identified in radial velocity planet programs, for instance those performing follow-up of transiting planets discovered by TESS. We introduce a "jitter metric" that combines the two competing effects of RV jitter with age: activity and convection. Using thresholds in the jitter metric, we can select both "complete" and "pure" samples of low jitter F stars. We also provide recipes for identifying these stars using only Gaia colors and magnitudes. Finally, we describe a region in the Gaia color-magnitude diagram where low jitter F stars are most highly concentrated. By fitting a 9th order polynomial to the Gaia main sequence, we use the height above the main sequence as a proxy for evolution, allowing for a crude selection of low jitter MSRF stars when activity measurements are otherwise unavailable., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, published in The Astronomical Journal

Radial velocity (RV) detection of planets is hampered by astrophysical processes on the surfaces of stars that induce a stochastic signal, or "jitter", which can drown out or even mimic planetary signals. Here, we empirically and carefully measure the RV jitter of more than 600 stars from the California Planet Search (CPS) sample on a star-by-star basis. As part of this process we explore the activity-RV correlation of stellar cycles and include appendices listing every ostensibly companion-induced signal we removed and every activity cycle we noted. We then use precise stellar properties from Brewer et al. (2017) to separate the sample into bins of stellar mass and examine trends with activity and with evolutionary state. We find RV jitter tracks stellar evolution and that in general, stars evolve through different stages of RV jitter: the jitter in younger stars is driven by magnetic activity, while the jitter in older stars is convectively-driven and dominated by granulation and oscillations. We identify the "jitter minimum" -- where activity-driven and convectively-driven jitter have similar amplitudes -- for stars between 0.7 and 1.7 $M_{\odot}$ and find that more massive stars reach this jitter minimum later in their lifetime, in the subgiant or even giant phases. We report the discovery of a warm Neptune and a hot sub-Neptune transiting TOI-421 (BD-14 1137, TIC 94986319), a bright (V=9.9) G9 dwarf star in a visual binary system observed by the TESS space mission in Sectors 5 and 6. We performed ground-based follow-up observations -- comprised of LCOGT transit photometry, NIRC2 adaptive optics imaging, and FIES, CORALIE, HARPS, HIRES, and PFS high-precision Doppler measurements -- and confirmed the planetary nature of the 16-day transiting candidate announced by the TESS team. We discovered an additional radial velocity signal with a period of 5 days induced by the presence of a second planet in the system, which we also found to transit its host star. We found that the inner mini-Neptune, TOI-421b, has an orbital period of Pb =5.19672 +- 0.00049 days, a mass of Mb = 7.17 +- 0.66 Mearth and a radius of Rb = 2.68+0.19-0.18 Rearth, whereas the outer warm Neptune, TOI-421 c, has a period of Pc =16.06819 +- 0.00035 days, a mass of Mc = 16.42+1.06-1.04 Mearth, a radius of Rc = 5.09+0.16-0.15 Rearth and a density of rho_c =0.685+0.080-0.072 g cm-3 . With its characteristics the inner planet (rho_b=2.05+0.52-0.41 g cm-3) is placed in the intriguing class of the super-puffy mini-Neptunes. TOI-421b and TOI-421c are found to be well suitable for atmospheric characterization. Our atmospheric simulations predict significant Ly-alpha transit absorption, due to strong hydrogen escape in both planets, and the presence of detectable CH_4 in the atmosphere of TOI-421c if equilibrium chemistry is assumed.

Quantum computing is a growing field at the intersection of physics and computer science. The goal of this article is to highlight a successfully trialled quantum computing course for high school students between the ages of 15 and 18 years old. This course bridges the gap between popular science articles and advanced undergraduate textbooks. Conceptual ideas in the text are reinforced with active learning techniques, such as interactive problem sets and simulation-based labs at various levels. From its discovery, the WASP-18 system with its massive transiting planet on a tight orbit was identified as a unique laboratory for studies on tidal planet-star interactions. In an analysis of Doppler data, which include five new measurements obtained with the HIRES/Keck-I instrument between 2012 and 2018, we show that the radial velocity signal of the photosphere following the planetary tidal potential can be distilled for the host star. Its amplitude is in agreement with both theoretical predictions of the equilibrium tide approximation and an ellipsoidal modulation observed in an orbital phase curve. Assuming a circular orbit, we refine system parameters using photometric time series from TESS. With a new ground-based photometric observation, we extend the span of transit timing observations to 28 years in order to probe the rate of the orbital period shortening. Since we found no departure from a constant-period model, we conclude that the modified tidal quality parameter of the host star must be greater than 3.9x10^6 with 95% confidence. This result is in line with conclusions drawn from studies of the population of hot Jupiters, predicting that the efficiency of tidal dissipation is 1 or 2 orders of magnitude weaker. Small planets on close-in orbits tend to exhibit envelope mass fractions of either effectively zero or up to a few percent depending on their size and orbital period. Models of thermally-driven atmospheric mass loss and of terrestrial planet formation in a gas-poor environment make distinct predictions regarding the location of this rocky/non-rocky transition in period-radius space. Here we present the confirmation of TOI-1235 b ($P=3.44$ days, $r_p=1.738^{+0.087}_{-0.076}$ R$_{\oplus}$), a planet whose size and period are intermediate between the competing model predictions thus making the system an important test case for emergence models of the rocky/non-rocky transition around early M dwarfs ($R_s=0.630\pm 0.015$ R$_{\odot}$, $M_s=0.640\pm 0.016$ M$_{\odot}$). We confirm the TESS planet discovery using reconnaissance spectroscopy, ground-based photometry, high-resolution imaging, and a set of 38 precise radial-velocities from HARPS-N and HIRES. We measure a planet mass of $6.91^{+0.75}_{-0.85}$ M$_{\oplus}$, which implies an iron core mass fraction of $20^{+15}_{-12}$% in the absence of a gaseous envelope. The bulk composition of TOI-1235 b is therefore consistent with being Earth-like and we constrain a H/He envelope mass fraction to be $<0.5$% at 90% confidence. Our results are consistent with model predictions from thermally-driven atmospheric mass loss but not with gas-poor formation, suggesting that the former class of processes remain efficient at sculpting close-in planets around early M dwarfs. Our RV analysis also reveals a strong periodicity close to the first harmonic of the photometrically-determined stellar rotation period that we treat as stellar activity, despite other lines of evidence favoring a planetary origin ($P=21.8^{+0.9}_{-0.8}$ days, $m_p\sin{i}=13.0^{+3.8}_{-5.3}$ M$_{\oplus}$) that cannot be firmly ruled out by our data., Comment: Accepted to The Astronomical Journal. 8 figures & 5 tables. Recent years have seen increasing interest in the characterization of sub-Neptune sized planets because of their prevalence in the Galaxy, contrasted with their absence in our solar system. HD 97658 is one of the brightest stars hosting a planet of this kind, and we present the transmission spectrum of this planet by combining four HST transits, twelve Spitzer/IRAC transits, and eight MOST transits of this system. Our transmission spectrum has higher signal to noise ratio than that from previous works, and the result suggests that the slight increase in transit depth from wavelength 1.1 to 1.7 microns reported in previous works on the transmission spectrum of this planet is likely systematic. Nonetheless, our atmospheric modeling results are not conclusive as no model provides an excellent match to our data. Nonetheless we find that atmospheres with high C/O ratios (C/O >~ 0.8) and metallicities of >~ 100x solar metallicity are favored. We combine the mid-transit times from all the new Spitzer and MOST observations and obtain an updated orbital period of P=9.489295 +/- 0.000005 d, with a best-fit transit time center at T_0 = 2456361.80690 +/- 0.00038 (BJD). No transit timing variations are found in this system. We also present new measurements of the stellar rotation period (34 +/- 2 d) and stellar activity cycle (9.6 yr) of the host star HD 97658. Finally, we calculate and rank the Transmission Spectroscopy Metric of all confirmed planets cooler than 1000 K and with sizes between 1 and 4 R_Earth. The orbital period of the hot Jupiter WASP-4b appears to be decreasing at a rate of $-8.64 \pm 1.26$ msec/yr, based on transit-timing measurements spanning 12 years. Proposed explanations for the period change include tidal orbital decay, apsidal precession, and acceleration of the system along the line of sight. To investigate further, we performed new radial velocity measurements and speckle imaging of WASP-4. The radial-velocity data show that the system is accelerating towards the Sun at a rate of $-0.0422\pm 0.0028$ m/s/day. The associated Doppler effect should cause the apparent period to shrink at a rate of $-5.94 \pm 0.39$ msec/yr, comparable to the observed rate. Thus, the observed change in the transit period is mostly or entirely produced by the line-of-sight acceleration of the system. This acceleration is probably caused by a wide-orbiting companion of mass 10-300$\,M_{\rm Jup}$ and orbital distance 10-100$\,$AU, based on the magnitude of the radial-velocity trend and the non-detection of any companion in the speckle images. We expect that the orbital periods of 1 out of 3 hot Jupiters will change at rates similar to WASP-4b, based on the hot-Jupiter companion statistics of Knutson et al. (2014). Continued radial velocity monitoring of hot Jupiters is therefore essential to distinguish the effects of tidal orbital decay or apsidal precession from line-of-sight acceleration., Comment: ApJL accepted

Background: Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience greater sleep problems than their peers. Although adolescence is generally a developmental period characterized by insufficient sleep, few studies have used a multi-informant, multi-method design, to examine whether sleep differs in adolescents with and without ADHD. Methods: Targeted recruitment was used to enroll an approximately equal number of eighth-grade adolescents (mean age = 13 years) with (n = 162) and without ADHD (n = 140). Adolescents and parents completed global ratings of sleep problems; adolescents, parents, and teachers completed ratings of daytime sleepiness. Adolescents wore actigraphs and completed a daily sleep diary for approximately 2 weeks. Results: Adolescents with ADHD were more likely than adolescents without ADHD to obtain insufficient sleep on school days (per diary) and weekends (per diary and actigraphy). Adolescents with ADHD were also more likely to report falling asleep in class and to have stayed up all night at least twice in the previous 2 weeks (14% and 5% reported all-nighters for ADHD and comparison, respectively). In regression analyses controlling for a number of variables known to impact sleep (e.g. pubertal development, sex, medication use, having an externalizing, anxiety, or depression diagnosis), ADHD remained associated with shorter diary and actigraphy school night sleep duration, adolescent- and parent-reported daytime sleepiness, and parent-reported difficulties initiating and maintaining sleep and total sleep disturbance. Controlling for other variables, the odds of being classified with clinically elevated parent-reported sleep disturbance were 6.20 times greater for adolescents with ADHD. Conclusions: Findings provide some of the clearest evidence yet that adolescents with ADHD experience more sleep problems and sleepiness than their peers without ADHD. It may be especially important to assess for sleep problems in adolescents with ADHD and to evaluate whether existing sleep interventions are effective, or can be optimized, for use in adolescents with ADHD who also have sleep problems.
