Abstract

Based on the results of the IFMIF/EVEDA project in the broader approach (BA) activities, the conceptual design of the Advanced Fusion Neutron Source (A-FNS) to obtain irradiation data of DEMO blanket materials is under consideration in Japan. This paper describes the progress of the A-FNS conceptual design, which consists of a 40 MeV, 125 mA deuteron beam, a liquid lithium target system, and a test and post-irradiation test facilities. the main objectives of the A-FNS are the acquisition of RAFM irradiation data up to 2035 and the tritium recovery test on the blanket. In addition, it is expected to be used for various neutron researches. The technical design activities of the A-FNS are focused on improvement of the lithium target design, review of impurity criteria, remote handling, and irradiation application plan. Abstract

Nano-composite silicon powders have been produced at a maximum process throughput of 6 g/min by plasma spraying with metallurgical grade silicon powder as raw material. The obtained powders are found to be fundamentally composed of crystalline silicon particles of 20-40 nm in diameter, and are coated with an ∼5-nm-thick amorphous carbonous layer when methane gas is additionally introduced during plasma spraying. The performance of half-cell batteries containing the powders as negative electrodes has shown that the capacity decay observed for the raw Si coarse particles is significantly improved by plasma treatment. The carbonous coating potentially contributes to an improvement in capacity retention, although coexisting SiC particles that inevitably form during high-temperature processing reduce the overall capacity. Abstract

With excellent superconducting properties such as high Tc, large Hc2, small anisotropy, and large Jc, developments of superconducting wires and tapes of iron-based superconductors (IBSs) have been undertaken with promising results. So far, K-doped 122-type IBSs have been mainly developed for such purposes. Here, efforts to fabricate Na-doped 122-type IBS, (Ba,Na)Fe2As2, are presented. With the help of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) process, excellent Jc characteristics of up to 44 kA cm−2 at 4.2 K under 100 kOe have been achieved. Detailed characterizations of (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 HIP round wire are presented. On the other hand, discoveries of new IBSs continue, with CaKFe4As4 as one of recent examples. CaKFe4As4 belongs to a new family of IBSs with 1144 structure, where Ca and K occupy the Ba site in BaFe2As2 alternately along the c-axis. Studies on CaKFe4As4 single crystals have demonstrated moderately large Jc with peculiar anisotropic properties related to the presence of novel planar defects. We have also fabricated HIP round wires of CaKFe4As4, and reported their basic characterizations. Despite the instability of CaKFe4As4 at low temperatures, Jc values at 4.2 K close to 100 kA cm−2 at self-field and 7.6 kA cm−2 at 100 kOe are achieved. Attempts to introduce defects into CaKFe4As4 single crystals, chemically by Co substitution and physically by proton irradiation, are attempted, and the effects are compared. Attempts to fabricate Co-doped CaKFe4As4 HIP round wires with limited success are also reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

234. Temperature Dependence of the Local Structure and Iron Magnetic Moment in the Self-Doped CaKFe4As4Iron-Based Superconductor

Abstract

Temperature-dependent Fe K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and Fe Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) measurements are used to study the local structure and local Fe magnetic moment in the self-doped CaKFe4As4superconductor. The local Fe–As and Fe–Fe bond lengths show thermal expansion similar to the one found in other iron-based superconductors. The arsenic height from the Fe–Fe plane changes anomalously with a sharp decrease in the vicinity of the superconducting transition temperature. The Fe Kβ XES reveals that Fe in CaKFe4As4is in the low spin state, and the local magnetic moment decreases sharply while the sample is cooled across the transition temperature. The results indicate importance of the magnetoelastic coupling in the superconductivity with a key role of interlayer atomic correlations in these materials.

237. High-critical-current-ratio superconducting joint between Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 tapes fabricated by angle-polishing method.

Abstract

Superconducting joints of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (BaK-122) tapes were fabricated by a simple cold-pressing method. The interfaces of the superconducting cores were prepared by two different methods; (i) peeling off a part of the Ag sheath (PO joint) and (ii) angle polishing of one edge of each tape (AP joint). For the PO joint, a critical current ratio (CCR =Icjoint/Ictape, where Ictape and Icjoint are critical currents in tapes and joint parts, respectively) of 30% at 4.2 K and 3.5 T was obtained. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the jointing area was not fully connected when the applied pressure was insufficient, and that cracks were induced in the superconducting core around the ends of the joint when the pressure was too high. These are considered to be factors that caused lowering of a CCR value. On the other hand, in the case of the AP joint, the formation of such gaps in the joint interface as well as inhomogeneous deformations and cracking around the joint-ends were successfully avoided. As a result, high CCR values of 80 ∼ 90% at 4.2 K under 0.5 ∼ 3.5 T were achieved, demonstrating that superconducting wires/tapes with sufficient length can be fabricated based on iron-based superconductors, which possibly opens up the potential for high-field magnet application.
