207. Odd-Cycle Separation for Maximum Cut and Binary Quadratic Optimization

Abstract

Solving the NP-hard Maximum Cut or Binary Quadratic Optimization Problem to optimality is important in many applications including Physics, Chemistry, Neuroscience, and Circuit Layout. The leading approaches based on linear/semidefinite programming require the separation of so-called odd-cycle inequalities for solving relaxations within their associated branch-and-cut frameworks. In their groundbreaking work, F. Barahona and A.R. Mahjoub have given an informal description of a polynomial-time separation procedure for the odd-cycle inequalities. Since then, the odd-cycle separation problem has broadly been considered solved. However, as we reveal, a straightforward implementation is likely to generate inequalities that are not facet-defining and have further undesired properties. Here, we present a more detailed analysis, along with enhancements to overcome the associated issues efficiently. In a corresponding experimental study, it turns out that these are worthwhile, and may speed up the solution process significantly.

Abstract

In der vorliegenden Studie wurde die Prävalenz der Besiedlung mit multiresistenten Keimen an 155 Patienten aus der onkologischen und 157 Patienten aus der kardiologischen Rehabilitation mittels mikrobiologischen Screenings untersucht. Dabei zeigten 4,5% der onkologischen und 4,5% der kardiologischen Rehabilitationspatienten eine Besiedlung mit multiresistenten Erregern. Am häufigsten wurden 2-MRGN und ESBL (2,9%) nachgewiesen. Onkologische Rehapatienten zeigten doppelt so hohe Prävalenzraten für 3-MRGN im Vergleich zu kardiologischen (2,6 und 1,3%). Insgesamt zeigen onkologische und kardiologische Rehabilitationspatienten vergleichsweise niedrige Prävalenzraten für multiresistente Krankenhauskeime. We investigated the prevalence of multidrug resistant pathogens in patients of oncologic and cardiologic rehabilitation units with 155 oncologic and 157 cardiologic patients undergoing microbiologic screening. It was found that 4.5 % of oncologic as well as cardiologic patients were colonized with multidrug resistant pathogens. 2-MRGN and ESBL were the most encountered species (2.9 %). 3-MRGN were found twice as frequent in oncologic patients (2.6 and 1.3 %). Overall oncologic and cardiologic patients exhibit comparatively low prevalence rates for multidrug resistant pathogens.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Dermatoscopy is successfully used for the early diagnosis of suspicious skin lesions, however, correct diagnosis depends on training. There is evidence that wavelet analysis by Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) can identify malignant melanomas by their hypervascularization and changes in the capillary morphology. OBJECTIVE: To show the capability of LDF in the distinction of melanomas and benign pigmented skin lesions based on data collected over 16 years. METHODS: Evaluation of pigmented skin lesions was based on clinical information. The LDF measurements were taken. The suspect lesion was excised afterwards for histological work-up. Four case reports are presented. Data collected over 16 years was processed into a neuronal network to estimate the dignity of the lesion. RESULTS: A total of 517 suspicious lesions were analyzed by LDF. In the histological work-up, 114 lesions turned out to be melanomas, whereas 403 benign naevi were secured. Specificity to detect melanomas was good based on the clinical information. The LDF increases the sensitivity of melanoma detection, which is also illustrated in four case reports. CONCLUSION: In addition to clinical parameters, such as color and border, information from the LDF can help in the diagnosis of malignant melanomas.
