Abstract

We present here recent results on the investigations of the mass spectrum (S-states and P-states), decay constants, decay widths and life time of the D, $D_s$,and $B_c$mesons within the framework of phenomenological potential models.We also present the binding energy and the masses of the di-meson molecular systems with one or more charm meson combinations. Many of the newly found experimental open charm states are identified with the orbital excitations of the conventional open charm mesons while others like X(3872), Y(3930), $D_{sJ}$(2632, 2700) \emph{etc.}, are identified as molecular like states., Comment: 08 pages, Presented in HADRON07:XII Int. 228. Undergraduate Students' Mental Models of the Climate System

Abstract

The climate, being a complex system, is difficult for people to understand. If better education is to be designed to improve the public's understanding of the subject, educators must be aware of the prior knowledge that students bring with them to the classroom since it is through that prism that people make sense of the world. As such, the aim of this exploratory study was to capture undergraduates' mental models of the climate system. The study consisted of two parts and utilized a mixed method approach. First a quantitative, open-ended survey was designed and administered to 219 participants to investigate their understanding of the climate. This was followed by qualitative, semi-structured interviews of 19 participants. Open coding was used to analyze the data. Capturing the students' understanding involved ascertaining their conceptions of the components of the climate system, as well as investigating their understanding of the interactions between the components, and what feedbacks are present. Students' ability to apply system thinking was also investigated. It was found that students' mental models of the climate system were incomplete and inconsistent, with water cycle components and interactions most frequently mentioned. Participants also displayed causal, linear thinking with little mention of feedback, and had difficulty solving an abstract climate system problem. The results suggest that system concepts such as feedbacks and delays should be explicitly emphasized when teaching about the climate. 238. Cytotoxic and immunomodulatory properties of Tinospora cordifolia, Boerhaavia diffusa, Berberis aristata, and Ocimum basilicum extracts against HPV-positive cervical cancer cell line

Abstract

Abstract Background Cervical cancer remains a significant public health concern, especially for low-and middle-income countries. This study explores the dual potential of medicinal plant extracts as both anticancer agents and immunomodulators, particularly in HPV-positive cervical cancer, while also addressing the limitations of conventional chemotherapy. Methods Extracts from Tinospora cordifolia, Boerhaavia diffusa, Berberis aristata, and Ocimum basilicum were tested on CaSki and HEK 293 cells alongside cisplatin. Cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, cell migration, HPV DNA inhibition, IFNG secretion, and cell cycle modulation were assessed using established biochemical and immunological assays, including qPCR, ELISA, and flow cytometry. Results Among the extracts, B. aristata demonstrated the strongest anticancer effects on cancer cells while exhibiting minimal impact on normal cells, highlighting its therapeutic potential. It also significantly reduced cell migration and has synergistic affect with cisplatin. B. diffusa emerged as the most effective in inhibiting HPV 16 DNA, suggesting its role in viral suppression. Immunomodulatory analysis revealed that T. cordifolia and O. basilicum significantly enhanced IFNG secretion, indicative of robust immune activation. Each tested extracts induced G0/G1 phase cell cycle arrest, with T. cordifolia showing the most pronounced effect. Conclusions This study highlights the novel therapeutic promise of integrating plant extracts into HPV-positive cervical cancer management. B. aristata stands out for its cytotoxicity and anti-migration properties, while T. cordifolia offers significant immunomodulatory benefits. These findings pave the way for further research into combining natural products with conventional therapies for safer, more effective cancer treatments.

Abstract

Abstract Challenges in drug development for rare diseases such as pulmonary arterial hypertension can be addressed through the use of mathematical modeling. In this study, a quantitative systems pharmacology model of pulmonary arterial hypertension pathophysiology and pharmacology was used to predict changes in pulmonary vascular resistance and six-minute walk distance in the context of oral treprostinil clinical studies. We generated a virtual population that spanned the range of clinical observations and then calibrated virtual patient-specific weights to match clinical trials. We then used this virtual population to predict the results of clinical trials on the basis of disease severity, dosing regimen, time since diagnosis, and co-administered background therapies. The virtual population captured the effect of changes in trial design and patient subpopulation on clinical response. We also demonstrated the virtual trial workflow’s potential for enriching populations based on clinical biomarkers to increase likelihood of trial success.

Abstract

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health problem due to its high cost of treatment. Objectives: (1) To assess the socio-demographic (S-D) profile of patients. (2) To assess and compare the health profile of CKD patients with control group. Methodology: Data from 340 patients (170 cases and 170 controls) was collected from tertiary hospitals in Junagadh district, Gujarat. Fleiss with correction of continuity method used for sample size calculation. Study was conducted during October 2022 to April 2023. Patient with eGFR <90 (ml/min/1.73m2) with albuminuria at least twice in 3 months considered as a case. Control group was taken from general surgery and orthopedic wards from the same hospitals. Odds ratio was applied to evaluate the role of various risk factors among case & control group. Results & Conclusions: Majority of cases were =60 years of age. Mean age of cases was 59.8±13.2. No significant gender difference was noted (P: 0.7). Educational status of the cases & controls showed significant difference (P: 0.01). The majority (55%) of cases belonged in urban areas. Major symptomatology of cases was bone/joint pain (81%) followed by lethargy (80%) and muscle cramps (67%). Other significant difference was noted for the following health variables e.g. history of chronic NSAIDs users, tobacco users, mean values of blood pressure and random blood sugar level.
