209. Compatible quantum correlations: on extension problems for Werner and isotropic states

Abstract

We investigate some basic scenarios in which a given set of bipartite quantum states may consistently arise as the set of reduced states of a global N-partite quantum state. Intuitively, we say that the multipartite state "joins" the underlying correlations. Determining whether, for a given set of states and a given joining structure, a compatible N-partite quantum state exists is known as the quantum marginal problem. We restrict to bipartite reduced states that belong to the paradigmatic classes of Werner and isotropic states in d dimensions, and focus on two specific versions of the quantum marginal problem which we find to be tractable. The first is Alice-Bob, Alice-Charlie joining, with both pairs being in a Werner or isotropic state. The second is m-n sharability of a Werner state across N subsystems, which may be seen as a variant of the N-representability problem to the case where subsystems are partitioned into two groupings of m and n parties, respectively. By exploiting the symmetry properties that each class of states enjoys, we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for three-party joinability and 1-n sharability for arbitrary d. Our results explicitly show that although entanglement is required for sharing limitations to emerge, correlations beyond entanglement generally suffice to restrict joinability, and not all unentangled states necessarily obey the same limitations. 211. A state sum invariant of tangles in surfaces

Abstract

In this paper we define a new state sum based on the regions defined by tangles on a surface which is an oriented closed surface with a finite number of open holes drilled. From this state sum we obtain an invariant of regular isotopy for the tangles named $u$-invariant. The values of the $u$-invariant are in $\mathbb{Z}[u]$, where $u$ is a primitive fifth root of the unity. Various basic properties of the invariant are proved and discussed. It can be specialized to invariants of framed links in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Its categoric aspect is emphasized: composition of tangles in surfaces correspond to matrix multiplication. Abstract

We show how the theory of tangles is equivalent to that of well-connected tangles. These are drawn on a surface with boundary, and equivalent via Reidemeister moves of a restricted kind. This reworking of the graphical foundations for link and tangle theory can be expected to have a variety of applications, including ones involving 3-manifolds. Abstract

Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we demonstrate an unambiguous 1-D system that surprisingly undergoes a CDW instability on a metallic substrate. Our ability to directly and quantitatively measure the structural distortion of this system provides an accurate reference for comparison with first principles theory. In comparison to previously proposed physical mechanisms, we attribute this particular 1-D CDW instability to a ferromagnetic state. We show that though the linear arrayed dimers are not electronically isolated, they are magnetically independent, and hence can potentially serve as a binary spin-memory system., Comment: Includes Supplementary Information

We show that monomial Cremona maps of degree d on P^n can have inverses whose degree d' is quite large (for d > 2, d' = ((d-1)^n - 1)/(d-2) occurs), and that the full list of degrees d' does not always form an interval. Abstract

Electron emission from the negative electron affinity (NEA) surface of hydrogen terminated, boron doped diamond in the [100] orientation is investigated using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). ARPES measurements using 16 eV synchrotron and 6 eV laser light are compared and found to show a catastrophic failure of the sudden approximation. While the high energy photoemission is found to yield little information regarding the NEA, low energy laser ARPES reveals for the first time that the NEA results from a novel Franck-Condon mechanism coupling electrons in the conduction band to the vacuum. Abstract

In this paper we present an analysis of the complexities of large group collaboration and its application to develop detailed requirements for collaboration schema for Autonomous Systems (AS). These requirements flow from our development of a framework for collaboration that provides a basis for designing, supporting and managing complex collaborative systems that can be applied and tested in various real world settings. We present the concepts of "collaborative flow" and "working as one" as descriptive expressions of what good collaborative teamwork can be in such scenarios. The paper considers the application of the framework within different scenarios and discuses the utility of the framework in modelling and supporting collaboration in complex organisational structures.

Abstract

A graph-theoretic method, simpler than existing ones, is used to characterize the minimal set of monomial generators for the integral closure of any algebra of polynomials generated by quadratic monomials. The toric ideal of relations between these generators is generated by a set of binomials, defined graphically.
