Abstract Background Following initiation of China’s National Malaria Elimination Action Plan (NMEAP) in 2010, the ‘1-3-7’ approach was developed and rolled out in China to facilitate the malaria elimination programme and accelerate malaria elimination. This study aims to summarize and condense these experiences through a retrospective analysis in Jiangsu Province, which could be adapted and applied in other malaria elimination settings worldwide. Methods A retrospective analysis of imported malaria cases into China identified through an improved surveillance and response system in Jiangsu Province was carried out for the period of 2001–2020. To improve the malaria surveillance and response system, Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention from the prefectures and counties in Jiangsu province conducted population-level health education to improve healthcare seeking behavior, strengthened capacity of health facilities to improve performance of malaria diagnosis and treatment, and raised the capacity of public health providers to improve implementation of the ‘1-3-7’ approach. Categorical variables were carried out by Chi square tests with Fisher’s exact correction. Results From 2001 to 2020, a total of 9,879 malaria cases were reported in Jiangsu Province. Since 2012, no indigenous malaria cases have been reported in Jiangsu Province. However, in recent years, there has been a substantial increase of imported falciparum malaria cases. Between 2012 and 2020, an estimated 61.57 million individuals have benefited from population-level health education in Jiangsu Province. For healthcare-seeking services among the 2,423 imported malaria cases, 687 (28.4%) and 1,104 (45.6%) cases visited hospitals on the first day and the second day from symptom onset, respectively. A total of 1,502 (61.9%) cases were diagnosed on the first day at medical facilities. Jiangsu Province achieved 100%, 99.4% and 98.3% completion rate in terms of case detection and notification (within one day), case investigation (within three days) and foci response and disposition (within seven days), respectively. The improved surveillance and response system in Jiangsu Province plays an important role in preventing the re-introduction of malaria and maintaining the malaria-free status. Conclusions Jiangsu Province has maintained its malaria-free status since 2012. The continuous improvement of a surveillance and response system plays an important role in the early detection and rapid response of potential malaria-related outbreaks in Jiangsu, China, and has important lessons for other malaria eliminating settings. Remaining vigilant in the detection of imported malaria cases and maintaining an active surveillance and response system is critical to sustain the success of malaria elimination. Graphic Abstract

Offshore wind speed is a critical factor that influences various aspects of human life, and accurate forecasting is of utmost importance for the efficient utilization of offshore resources. In this paper, we present a novel deep-learning-based model for multisite offshore wind speed forecasting along the US East Coast. The proposed model is trained using the collected 2018–2020 National Data Buoy Center buoy data and tested using the 2021–2022 data. By inputting historical wind speed data into the model, simultaneous forecasting results can be obtained for multiple buoy sites through the embedding layer, feature extraction layer, and long short-term memory layer. Notably, the embedding layer, which is specifically engineered to capture spatial dependencies between multiple sites, proves to be highly effective in the context of multisite wind speed forecasting, as substantiated by our conducted ablation experiments. The evaluation metrics display satisfactory results: The 12-h average root mean square error at 1-h forecasting intervals is 2.09 m/s, the correlation coefficient is 0.7, and the mean absolute error is 1.24 m/s. Through case studies, the proposed model demonstrates its effectiveness in forecasting wind speeds during hurricanes, underscoring its potential for use in the offshore wind energy assessment and maritime disaster warning domains.

ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of aerobic exercise on five dimensions of physical self-worth, exercise capacity, physical condition, physical attractiveness, and physical quality in body self-esteem of Chinese college students.MethodsBy searching PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CNIK database, VIP database, WANFANG database platform, we searched for the subject terms or keywords "body self-esteem", "Chinese college students", "Systematic evaluation", "Aerobic exercise", "Exercise intervention", "Meta-Analysis". The search method was a combination of subject terms and keywords and title, and the search period was from database creation to The search was conducted from database creation to May 2022. A total of 3221 articles were searched, and 9 articles were included in the study through repeated screening. Risk of bias was assessed with Cochrane and the quality of studies in the literature was assessed using Grade pro software. The outcome indicators of the included literature were analysed using review manager 5.4 software and StataMP 17.0 software.ResultsNine papers including 1613 subjects were included. results of Meta-analysis showed that aerobic exercise was effective in improving physical self-worth (WMD = 1.46, 95% CI: 1.08-1.83, pConclusionAerobic exercise can effectively improve the body self-esteem of Chinese college students. In exercise, male students pursue is athletic ability and physical fitness, and female students pursue is the sense of physical self-worth and physical attractiveness. Aerobic exercise has a greater increase in body self-esteem for obese or Obese college students. Aerobics and physical dance are the most cost-effective for improving body self-esteem. Medium-intensity relative to low-intensity exercise was effective for body self-esteem intervention. A single exercise session of 90 minutes was more effective than a single 30-minute session in boosting body self-esteem, and the overall intervention duration of 16 weeks was more effective than 10 weeks.

Aqueous zinc (Zn)-based energy storage devices possess promising applications for large-scale energy storage systems due to the advantage of high safety, low price, and environment-friendliness. However, their development is restricted by dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution issues from the Zn-metal anode. Herein, a facile stress-pressing method is reported for constructing a grid zinc anode (GZn) with a conductive framework. The highly conductive copper (Cu)-mesh framework reduces electrode hydrogen evolution and increases electrode conductivity. Meanwhile, the in situ-formed Cu-Zn nano-alloy stabilizes the Zn deposition interface. As a result, the GZn symmetrical cell presents a low overpotential of 49 mV after cycling for 1,200 h (0.2 mA∙cm−2). In addition, GZn displays its potential application as a universal anode for Zn-ion capacitors and batteries. An activated carbon||GZn Zn-ion capacitor delivers a stable cycling performance after 10,000 cycles at 5 A∙g−1 and MnO2||GZn Zn-ion batteries exhibit satisfactory cycle stability and excellent rate performance. This demonstrates that GZn appears to be a promising universal anode for Zn-ion capacitors and batteries.

Textual analysis and the Entropy-TOPSIS method are used in this research to create a measure of corporate environmental protection, and multiple regressions are used to find out how digitalization affects corporate environmental protection. The research sets up a theoretical framework for how corporate digitalization affects environmental protection and looks into how external financing constraints and an organization's own financial position play a role in the middle. The research then looks at how outside factors like the business environment of the market and the level of competition in the industry affect the relationship. Using a threshold regression approach, the research also examines the change in the impact of digitalization on environmental protection after investor sentiment crosses the threshold from the distinct perspective of investor sentiment. Our research provides theoretical support for environmental protection by corporations and government policy direction.

In today’s digital and network era, multimedia has become the main part of the Internet information transmission, and multidisciplinary art and science communion has promoted the development of the multimedia information retrieval. As a result, this paper examines the correlation of big data against the background of financial and multimedia information retrieval algorithms.

Background:. HVPG measurement is the gold standard for assessing portal hypertension. Many patients decline HVPG measurements due to associated pain. According to previous studies, propofol sedation during HVPG measurements potentially alters HVPG readings. However, opioid analgesics’ effects on HVPG await full elucidation. This study aimed to evaluate fentanyl analgesia’s effects on HVPG measurement accuracy in patients with cirrhosis. Methods:. This prospective, multicenter study included patients with cirrhosis undergoing HVPG measurements, which were performed preanalgesia and under analgesia with fentanyl injection (1.0 or 1.5 μg/kg). Results:. Of the 48 enrolled patients with cirrhosis, 23 were administered 1.0 μg/kg fentanyl analgesia during HVPG measurement. The HVPG was 13.4±4.9 mm Hg in preanalgesia and 13.5±5.2 mm Hg under analgesia. HVPG measurement accuracy was not altered after fentanyl analgesia (p = 0.801). The following measures also did not change: heart rate (p = 0.132), mean arterial pressure (p = 0.348), and blood oxygen saturation (p = 0.748); however, respiratory rate (p = 0.001) changes occurred. The Verbal Numerical Rating Score for comfort under analgesia was higher than that in preanalgesia (p = 0.001). Twenty-five patients were administered 1.5 μg/kg fentanyl analgesia during HVPG measurement. The HVPG was 19.5±5.7 mm Hg in preanalgesia and 19.6±5.6 mm Hg under analgesia. HVPG measurement accuracy did not alter after fentanyl analgesia (p = 0.469). Similarly, the following measures did not change: mean arterial pressure (p = 0.871) and oxygen saturation (p = 0.327); nevertheless, respiratory rate (p = 0.015) and heart rate (p = 0.019) changes occurred. The Verbal Numerical Rating Score for comfort under analgesia was higher than that in preanalgesia (p < 0.001). Conclusion:. Fentanyl analgesia did not alter HVPG measurement accuracy, and fentanyl improved comfort in patients with cirrhosis during HVPG measurements.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is the second-largest stroke subtype and has a high mortality and disability rate. Secondary brain injury (SBI) is delayed after ICH. The main contributors to SBI are inflammation, oxidative stress, and excitotoxicity. Harmful substances from blood and hemolysis, such as hemoglobin, thrombin, and iron, induce SBI. When cells suffer stress, a critical protective mechanism called “autophagy” help to maintain the homeostasis of damaged cells, remove harmful substances or damaged organelles, and recycle them. Autophagy plays a critical role in the pathology of ICH, and its function remains controversial. Several lines of evidence demonstrate a pro-survival role for autophagy in ICH by facilitating the removal of damaged proteins and organelles. However, many studies have found that heme and iron can aggravate SBI by enhancing autophagy. Autophagy and inflammation are essential culprits in the progression of brain injury. It is a fascinating hypothesis that autophagy regulates inflammation in ICH-induced SBI. Autophagy could degrade and clear pro-IL-1β and apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD (ASC) to antagonize NLRP3-mediated inflammation. In addition, mitophagy can remove endogenous activators of inflammasomes, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS), inflammatory components, and cytokines, in damaged mitochondria. However, many studies support the idea that autophagy activates microglia and aggravates microglial inflammation via the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) pathway. In addition, autophagy can promote ICH-induced SBI through inflammasome-dependent NLRP6-mediated inflammation. Moreover, some resident cells in the brain are involved in autophagy in regulating inflammation after ICH. Some compounds or therapeutic targets that regulate inflammation by autophagy may represent promising candidates for the treatment of ICH-induced SBI. In conclusion, the mutual regulation of autophagy and inflammation in ICH is worth exploring. The control of inflammation by autophagy will hopefully prove to be an essential treatment target for ICH.

Fibre reinforced flexible pipes are subjected to radial compression loads caused by the tensioner during pipe laying, which may lead to excessive deformation or even damage of the pipe. In this study, the mechanical characteristics of a glass fibre reinforced unbonded flexible pipe are investigated under radial compression loading. In the theoretical analysis, the hoop reinforcement layer of the pipe is considered equivalent to an orthotropic circular tube. An analytical equation for calculating the radial stiffness of the circular tube per unit length is then derived based on the classical elastic theory of the ring. Radial compression tests are carried out with a universal testing machine and displacement loading within the elastic deformation range is applied to two 500 mm long samples. A 3D numerical model is established to simulate the compression process of the flexible pipe, through which the distribution characteristics of the displacement, strain and stress of the hoop reinforcement layer are also obtained. The load-displacement curves obtained from the tests and numerical model are linearly fitted to calculate the radial stiffness of the pipe. The radial stiffness obtained by the numerical model is very close to that obtained by the analytical method. However, owing to factors such as material defects and initial ovality, the radial stiffness measured experimentally is lower than the analytical result.

Plants often suffer from hypoxic stress due to flooding caused by extreme weather. Hypoxia usually leads to restricted oxygen supply and alters metabolic patterns from aerobic to anaerobic. Cucumber roots are fragile and highly sensitive to damage from hypoxic stress. The purpose of this study was to investigate the regulatory mechanism of exogenous calcium alleviating hypoxic stress in cucumber through transcriptome and small RNAs analysis. Three treatments were performed in this paper, including untreated-control (CK), hypoxic stress (H), and hypoxic stress + exogenous calcium treatment (H + Ca2+). A large number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, 1,463 DEGs between CK vs H, 3,399 DEGs between H vs H + Ca2+, and 5,072 DEGs between CK vs H + Ca2+, respectively. KEGG analysis of DEGs showed that exogenous calcium could activate hormone signaling pathways (ethylene, ABA, IAA and cytokinin), transcription factors (MYB, MYB-related, bHLH, bZIP, and WRKY), calcium signaling and glycolysis pathway to mitigating hypoxic stress in cucumber seedlings. Additionally, miRNA and their target genes were detected and predicted between treatments. The target genes of these miRNAs revealed that auxin, cellulose synthase, and mitochondrial ribosomal related genes (Csa2G315390, Csa6G141390, Csa4G053280, and Csa6G310480) probably play in the improvement of the hypoxic tolerance of cucumber seedlings through exogenous calcium application. In short, our data adds new information to the mechanism of exogenous calcium mitigation of hypoxic stress injury in cucumber seedlings at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels.

Adlay (Coix lacryma-jobi L.), a crop closed related to maize (Zea mays L.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), originated in tropical/subtropical regions of Asia and Africa; southwest China primary center of this plant’s origin, evolution and migration. Adlay is a traditional high-value minor crop used for both medicinal and dietary purposes. Adlay has anti-tumor, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, blood sugar-lowering, and blood lipid-lowering effects. To clarify the main bioactive components and phytochemical compounds and to fully explore their utility, this review summarizes the research done on the main functional ingredients of adlay, including amino acids and proteins, oils, vitamins and minerals, polysaccharides, and polyphenols. This study also highlighted the application of genome sequencing to tailor nutrient-rich adlay cultivars and nutraceutical product development. Additionally, the acquisition of high-density genomic data combined with next-generation phenotypic analysis will undoubtedly improve our understanding of the potential genetic regulation of adlay nutraceutical traits. This review provides new insights and ideas for the research of adlay in comparison and evolutionary genomics, and a useful reference for molecular breeding and genetic improvement of this important minor crop.

Physical activity and subjective well-being have both been shown to correlate with mobile phone dependence, but the impact of subjective well-being on the relationship between physical activity and mobile phone dependence is not fully understood. This study investigates subjective well-being as a potential mediating variable in the relationship. It also investigates whether psychological capital moderates the association between subjective well-being and mobile phone dependence.MethodsA total of 9,569 students from 38 universities in Jiangsu Province were selected. ABSTRACT Isoprene is a ubiquitously distributed, biogenic, and climate-active organic compound. Microbial isoprene degradation in oxic environments is fairly well understood; however, studies exploring anaerobic isoprene metabolism remain scarce, with no isolates for study available. Here, we obtained an acetogenic isolate, designated Acetobacterium wieringae strain Y, which hydrogenated isoprene to a mixture of methyl-1-butenes at an overall rate of 288.8 ± 20.9 μM day−1 with concomitant acetate production at a rate of 478.4 ± 5.6 μM day−1. Physiological characterization demonstrated that isoprene was not utilized in a respiratory process; rather, isoprene promoted acetogenesis kinetically. Bioinformatic analysis and proteomics experiments revealed the expression of candidate ene-reductases responsible for isoprene biohydrogenation. Notably, the addition of isoprene to strain Y cultures stimulated the expression of proteins associated with the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway, indicating unresolved impacts of isoprene on carbon cycling and microbial ecology in anoxic environments (e.g., promoting CO2 plus H2 reductive acetogenesis while inhibiting methanogenesis). Our new findings advance understanding of microbial transformation of isoprene under anoxic conditions and suggest that anoxic environments are isoprene sinks. IMPORTANCE Isoprene is the most abundant, biologically generated, volatile organic compound on Earth, with estimated emissions in the same magnitude as methane. Nonetheless, a comprehensive knowledge of isoprene turnover in the environment is lacking, impacting global isoprene flux models and our understanding of the environmental fate and longevity of isoprene. A critical knowledge gap that has remained largely unexplored until recently is the microbiology and associated molecular mechanisms involved in the anaerobic biotransformation of isoprene. By integrating culture-dependent approaches with omics techniques, we isolated an acetogen, Acetobacterium wieringae strain Y, capable of anaerobic biohydrogenation of isoprene. We obtained the complete genome of strain Y, and proteomic experiments identified candidate ene-reductases for catalyzing the asymmetric reduction of the electronically activated carbon-carbon double bond of isoprene. We also demonstrated that isoprene biohydrogenation stimulates the expression of Wood-Ljungdahl pathway enzymes. This study emphasizes the ecological roles of specialized Acetobacterium on the natural cycling of isoprene in anoxic environments and the potential effects of isoprene biohydrogenation on acetogens and methanogens, which have implications for global climate change and bioenergy production.

Obesity is a metabolic disease associated with gut microbiota and low-grade chronic inflammation. Tremella fuciformis is a medicinal and edible fungus; polysaccharide (TP) is the main active component, which has a variety of biological activities, such as hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic. However, the anti-obesity effects and potential mechanisms of TP have never been reported. This study was conducted to elucidate the inhibitory effect of TP on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity in mice. Mice were split into five groups: normal chow diet (NCD) group, NCD_TP_H group, HFD group, HFD_TP_L group and HFD_TP_H group. Our study showed that TP inhibited high-fat diet-induced weight gain and fat accumulation in mice and reduced blood glucose, hyperlipidemia and inflammation. TP also improved gut microbiota disorders by reducing the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and modulating the relative abundance of specific gut microbiota. We also found that the anti-obesity and gut microbiota-modulating effects of TP could be transferred to HFD-fed mice via faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), confirming that the gut microbiota was one of the targets of TP for obesity inhibition. Further studies showed that TP increased the production of short-chain fatty acids and the secretion of intestinal hormones. Our studies showed that TP inhibited obesity by modulating inflammation and the microbe-gut-brain axis, providing a rationale for developing TP to treat obesity and its complications.

Shewanella putrefaciens is a special spoilage bacterium of seafood during cold storage, which is easy to form biofilm and bring serious hazard to the seafood quality. Life cycle of biofilm starts after bacterial adhesion, which is essential for the formation and development of biofilm. As a ubiquitous second messenger in bacteria, c-di-GMP regulates the conversion between bacterial planktonic state and biofilm state. In this study, the adhesion and biofilm formation of S. putrefaciens WS13 under 4°C were compared to those under 30°C. Atom force microscope and scanning electron microscope were used to study the bacterial adhesion. Biofilm was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Bradford assay and phenol-sulfuric acid method. High-performance liquid chromatographic-tandem mass spectrometric and quantitative real-time PCR were applied to study c-di-GMP level and genes encoding diguanylate cyclases in cells, respectively. Results showed that the swarming mobility of S. putrefaciens WS13 was weaker under 4°C, however, the adhesive force under 4°C was 4–5 times higher than that under 30°C. Biofilm biomass, extracellular polysaccharides and extracellular proteins were 2.5 times, 3 times, and 1.6 times more than those under 30°C, respectively, but biofilm composition formed under both temperatures were similar. c-di-GMP level in S. putrefaciens WS13 under 30°C was no more than half of that in the corresponding growth stage under 4°C. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis also showed that the expression of genes encoding diguanylate cyclases were significantly enhanced under 4°C than that under 30°C. S. putrefaciens WS13 adapted to the cold stress by enhancing the expression of genes encoding diguanylate cyclases to promote bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the research on the cold adaptation mechanism of specific spoilage bacteria of seafood based on c-di-GMP, and also provides a new idea to control seafood quality from the perspective of microbial molecular biology.

Background: Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is a highly pruritic, chronic-recurrent inflammatory skin condition associated with erythematous lesions that affect a significant proportion of the population. Although AD is a non-communicable disease, it can cause pain, unbearable itchiness, sleep disturbance, loss of work productivity, and reduced quality of life. As a heterogeneous disease, AD is influenced by multiple genes and environmental triggers. As such, it is imperative to gain a deeper insight into the intricate gene-environment relationship that results in the manifestation of AD. Methods: There are 3 objectives in our study. We first aim to update the epidemiological status of AD amongst young adults in Singapore and Malaysia, in particular amongst the Chinese ethnic background. Next, we re-evaluated the possible associated risk factors, identified in our previous meta-analysis and review studies, on the current cohort. Finally, we described here a detailed disease presentation and symptoms profile of our Singapore and Malaysia Cross-Sectional Genetics Epidemiology Study (SMCGES) cohort, which forms the base population for the discovery of associated genetic factors in relation to asthma, allergic diseases and skin conditions. Based on a skin prick test (SPT) and investigator-administered medical history responses, we assessed the AD profiles of 11 494 participants and the significant modifiable and non-modifiable factors associated with disease presentation. Results: The prevalence of AD in the combined population was 13.5%. Chronic and moderate/severe AD were observed in 35.5% and 40.5% of the individuals with AD, respectively. Family history of atopic diseases, prior history of drug allergies, a history of acne, increased household family monthly income, higher number of individuals in the shared household, parental education, sedentary lifestyle, physical activities, alcoholic consumption, and even quality of diet was significantly associated with AD presentation, chronicity, and severity. Among all the factors evaluated, family and personal history of atopic diseases imposed the strongest associated risk. Conclusions: These findings supported our previous review studies and affirmed that familial history or genetic factors critically influence the development of AD in our population and environment. Environmental and other modifiable factors can also trigger AD throughout the lifetime of individuals who have especially inherited the atopic disease disposition. A better understanding of how these risk factors affect AD individuals in our population can facilitate disease surveillance, monitor disease control, and serve as a description for our future genetic epidemiology studies.

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 is a human pathogen that causes a variety of diseases, such as hemorrhagic colitis and lethal hemolytic uremic syndrome. Flagellum-dependent motility plays diverse roles in the pathogenesis of EHEC O157:H7, including its migration to an optimal host site, adherence and colonization, survival at the infection site, and post-infection dispersal. However, it is very expensive for cellular economy in terms of the number of genes and the energy required for flagellar biosynthesis and functioning. Furthermore, the flagellar filament bears strong antigenic properties that induce a strong host immune response. Consequently, the flagellar gene expression and biosynthesis are highly regulated to occur at the appropriate time and place by different regulatory influences. The present review focuses on the regulatory mechanisms of EHEC O157:H7 motility and flagellar biosynthesis, especially in terms of flagellar gene regulation by environmental factors, regulatory proteins, and small regulatory RNAs.

Hallucination is a common non-motor symptom in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Additionally, sleep disorders are associated with an increased risk of hallucinations in PD patients. This study aimed to examine the association between hallucination and objective sleep parameters in PD patients. We retrospectively recruited 278 PD patients who underwent polysomnography and clinical assessments and classified them into non-hallucination and hallucination groups. Hallucinations were observed in 77 older PD patients who had more severe motor symptoms and higher scores on the Non-Motor Symptoms Questionnaire (NMSQ), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) but lower scores on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) and PD Sleep Scale (PDSS) than PD patients without hallucinations. Analysis of the polysomnographic variables in patients with hallucinations showed that they exhibited a decrease in total sleep time, sleep efficiency (SE), rapid eye movement (REM) sleep time and slow wave sleep (SWS, N3) time and percentage but a significant increase in wake time after sleep onset (WASO), periodic limb movement index (PLMI) scores, and stage 2 NREM (N2)percentage. Logistic regression analysis revealed that higher NMSQ scores, lower MOCA scores, lower SE, and a lower percentage of N3 sleep were associated with hallucinations in PD patients. Our results suggested that PD patients with hallucinations had worse sleep quality and differences in sleep architecture (measured by polysomnography).

Water bodies in urban green spaces are important parts of urban landscapes, and their planar shapes are an important factor governing the creation of waterfront landscapes. To improve the aesthetics and functionality of water bodies, this paper takes Nanjing as an example for analysis to investigate whether it is possible to scientifically quantify the planar shape of urban green space water bodies. First, water bodies meeting the conditions within the municipal area were selected as the study objects for classification. Second, in view of the lack of theoretical and innovative problems in previous studies, the use of fractal theory was proposed to improve the scientificity. Finally, remote sensing data images were used to extract water body planes, and the fractal dimensions were calculated and quantitatively evaluated by coupling the box dimension method with fractal theory. The results show that the fractal dimension could be used as a quantitative parameter to determine the planar morphology of water bodies in urban green spaces, and the fractal dimension value is positively correlated with the complexity of the water body, which can be used for both quantitative assessment of the landscape aesthetics of existing water bodies in urban green spaces and theoretical support for the future design of water planar morphology.

Machine learning is a popular approach to security monitoring and intrusion detection in cyber-physical systems (CPS) like the smart grid. However, these highly dynamic CPS operating in open environments can result in significant data distribution divergence, which may require the adaptation of a learned model. While transfer learning has been an effective approach to retain the performance against the divergence, there is still limited work on a more fundamental question that can be called transferability: when should one apply transfer learning? To address this challenge, this paper proposes a divergence-based transferability analysis to decide whether to apply transfer learning and autonomically adapt learning-based intrusion detectors. This work first identifies three metrics used to measure the divergence between data distributions, and then explores the relation between detector’s accuracy drop and divergence in extensive temporal, spatial, and spatiotemporal experiments. Two regression models are trained to approximate the divergence-accuracy relation and then used to predict an accuracy drop which determines whether to apply transfer learning. Finally, a state-of-the-art domain adversarial neural network (DANN) classifier is adopted as the transfer learning model. Datasets from real normal operation profiles and simulated attacks are used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed transferability analysis against variations in attack timing, locations, and both. In all three scenarios, the proposed analysis demonstrated high accuracy in predicting accuracy drop from the divergence, with an RMSE lower than 4.20%, and the DANN can be timely triggered to achieve an accuracy improvement over 5.00%.

There are arguments about the scattering mechanism of the 10-dB periodic signal fluctuations posed by the repetitive flapping motion in radar ornithology. We design a dynamic measurement system composed of a network analyzer and a high-speed camera to track dynamic radar signals modulated by the flapping gaits of birds within the S-band, X-band, and Ku-band. The results indicate that the respiration motion contributes little to the bird’s signals, but the flapping wings not only contribute at least 10 dB to the signal fluctuation, but also modulate the radar signals of flying birds related to the flapping gaits, regarding different radar bands, observing angles and bird species. Furthermore, the contributions observed in the tests indicate that our theory of the time-varying wingbeat corner reflector (WCR) effect is correct in explaining the modulation mechanism of the 10-dB signal fluctuations in radar ornithology.

Abstract Background C–C chemokine receptor type 1 (CCR1) and its endogenous ligand, CCL5, participate in the pathogenesis of neuroinflammatory diseases. However, much remains unknown regarding CCL5/CCR1 signaling in blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Methods A total of 250 CD1 male mice were used and ICH was induced via autologous whole blood injection. Either Met-RANTES, a selective CCR1 antagonist, or Met-RANTES combined with a Rac1 CRISPR activator was administered to the mice 1 h after ICH. Post-ICH assessments included neurobehavioral tests, brain water content, BBB integrity, hematoma volume, Western blot, and immunofluorescence staining. The CCR1 ligand, rCCL5, and SRC CRISPR knockout in naïve mice were used to further elucidate detrimental CCL5/CCR1/SRC signaling. Results Brain endogenous CCR1 and CCL5 were upregulated after ICH in mice with a peak at 24 h, and CCR1 was expressed in endothelial cells, astrocytes, and neurons. Met-R treatment reduced brain edema and neurobehavioral impairment, as well as preserved BBB integrity and tight junction protein expression in ICH mice. Met-R treatment decreased expression of p-SRC, Rac1, albumin, and MMP9, but increased claudin-5, occludin, and ZO-1 tight junction proteins after ICH. These effects were regressed using the Rac1 CRISPR activator. Administration of rCCL5 in naïve mice increased expression of p-SRC, Rac1, albumin, and MMP9, but decreased levels of claudin-5, occludin, and ZO-1 tight junction proteins. These effects in naïve mice were reversed with SRC CRISPR (KO). Conclusions Our findings demonstrate that CCR5 inhibition by Met-R improves neurological deficits after ICH by preserving BBB integrity through inhibiting CCR1/SRC/Rac1 signaling pathway in mice. Thus, Met-R has therapeutic potential in the management of ICH patients.

Abstract Background Biomedical named entity recognition (NER) is a fundamental task of biomedical text mining that finds the boundaries of entity mentions in biomedical text and determines their entity type. To accelerate the development of biomedical NER techniques in Spanish, the PharmaCoNER organizers launched a competition to recognize pharmacological substances, compounds, and proteins. Biomedical NER is usually recognized as a sequence labeling task, and almost all state-of-the-art sequence labeling methods ignore the meaning of different entity types. In this paper, we investigate some methods to introduce the meaning of entity types in deep learning methods for biomedical NER and apply them to the PharmaCoNER 2019 challenge. The meaning of each entity type is represented by its definition information. Material and method We investigate how to use entity definition information in the following two methods: (1) SQuad-style machine reading comprehension (MRC) methods that treat entity definition information as query and biomedical text as context and predict answer spans as entities. (2) Span-level one-pass (SOne) methods that predict entity spans of one type by one type and introduce entity type meaning, which is represented by entity definition information. All models are trained and tested on the PharmaCoNER 2019 corpus, and their performance is evaluated by strict micro-average precision, recall, and F1-score. Results Entity definition information brings improvements to both SQuad-style MRC and SOne methods by about 0.003 in micro-averaged F1-score. The SQuad-style MRC model using entity definition information as query achieves the best performance with a micro-averaged precision of 0.9225, a recall of 0.9050, and an F1-score of 0.9137, respectively. It outperforms the best model of the PharmaCoNER 2019 challenge by 0.0032 in F1-score. Compared with the state-of-the-art model without using manually-crafted features, our model obtains a 1% improvement in F1-score, which is significant. These results indicate that entity definition information is useful for deep learning methods on biomedical NER. Conclusion Our entity definition information enhanced models achieve the state-of-the-art micro-average F1 score of 0.9137, which implies that entity definition information has a positive impact on biomedical NER detection. In the future, we will explore more entity definition information from knowledge graph.

Abstract Background Prototype foamy virus (PFV) is nonpathogenic complex retroviruses that express a transcriptional transactivator Tas, which is essential for the activity of viral long terminal repeat (LTR) promoter and internal promoter (IP). Tripartite motif-containing protein 28 (Trim28) is well known as a scaffold protein normally enriched in gene promoter region to repress transcription. We sought to determine if whether Trim28 could be enriched in PFV promoter region to participate the establishment of PFV latency infection. Results In this study, we show that Trim28 restricts Tas-dependent transactivation activity of PFV promoter and negatively regulates PFV replication. Trim28 was found to be enriched in LTR instead of IP promoter regions of PFV genome and contribute to the maintenance of histone H3K9me3 marks on the LTR promoter. Furthermore, Trim28 interacts with Tas and colocalizes with Tas in the nucleus. Besides, we found that Trim28, an E3 ubiquitin ligase, binds directly to and promotes Tas for ubiquitination and degradation. And the RBCC domain of Trim28 is required for the ubiquitination and degradation of Tas. Conclusions Collectively, our findings not only identify a host factor Trim28 negatively inhibits PFV replication by acting as transcriptional restriction factor enriched in viral LTR promoter through modulating H3K9me3 mark here, but also reveal that Trim28 mediated ubiquitin proteasome degradation of Tas as a mechanism underlying Trim28 restricts Tas-dependent transcription activity of PFV promoter and PFV replication. These findings provide new insights into the process of PFV latency establishment. Graphical Abstract

Abstract This review aimed to explore the concept, etiology, classification, classical cortical mapping, assessment, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, mechanism, recovery, prognosis, and influencing factors for Chinese post‐stroke aphasia (PSA). The review emphasized the necessity and significance of neuroimaging assessment of brain and blood vessels and neuropsychological assessment in diagnosis and differential diagnosis of Chinese PSA. In addition, it suggested and recommended to use “dichotomies of internal and external, and anterior and posterior” as a starting point, based on the anatomic location of brain and blood vessels and their relationship with language area and language disorder. As a result, the formulated Chinese PSA classification was more suitable to guide the clinical treatment of cerebral stroke. Diagnosis, classification, and differential diagnosis of Chinese PSA types were performed according to the “dichotomy” and “four elements.” The formulated “flow diagram” enabled to determine the classification of Chinese PSA types. It was beneficial for patients to establish targeted and individualized rehabilitation training plans. This review introduced the use of memantine, piracetam, donepezil, etc. in PSA treatment, evaluated clinical studies conducted in China and abroad, investigated the mechanism of action related to the use of drugs in PSA treatment, and explored the therapeutic mechanism of rehabilitation training. It suggested the use drugs of memantine, piracetam, donepezil, etc. combine with non‐pharmacotherapy and rehabilitation training in clinical studies on PSA treatment and also in practical settings.

Tuff of Middle Permian as a record of volcanic activity are widely distributed in the northern hemisphere, such as South China, but origin of the tuff bed remains unclear. Stratigraphy, geochronology, geochemistry, and zircon Hf isotopic composition of the tuff layers from Gufeng Formation in Chaohu region, South China, are systemically investigated to reveal the origin of the tuff. The stratigraphical investigation and geochronological dating reveal that zircon U–Pb age of 271.6 ± 3.1 Ma for lower tuff layer is identical to the formation age (272 Ma) of the bottom boundary in the Gufeng Formation, while the zircon U–Pb age of 263.6 ± 3.8 Ma for upper tuff layer represents the boundary age between the lower and upper Gufeng Formation. The tuff with a lot of clastic materials has high Th/Ce (0.18–0.84) and Th/La (0.29–1.23) ratios, enrichment in LREE, Th, U and Hf, and depletion in Ba, Nb and Sr, with obviously negative Eu anomalies (δEu = 0.41–0.58). Compared with the lower tuff layer, the upper tuff layer has higher zircon εHf (t) values (−5.65 to 10.2) and lg fO2 values (−14.6 to −7.42). The distinctly chemical and isotopic results indicate that the intermediate-felsic tuff in the Chaohu region were originated from more crustal materials in early stage of the Gufeng Formation and increased juvenile crustal materials and higher oxygen fugacity in late stage of the Gufeng Formation.

Abstract Background GRAS transcription factors perform indispensable functions in various biological processes, such as plant growth, fruit development, and biotic and abiotic stress responses. The development of whole-genome sequencing has allowed the GRAS gene family to be identified and characterized in many species. However, thorough in-depth identification or systematic analysis of GRAS family genes in foxtail millet has not been conducted. Results In this study, 57 GRAS genes of foxtail millet (SiGRASs) were identified and renamed according to the chromosomal distribution of the SiGRAS genes. Based on the number of conserved domains and gene structure, the SiGRAS genes were divided into 13 subfamilies via phylogenetic tree analysis. The GRAS genes were unevenly distributed on nine chromosomes, and members of the same subfamily had similar gene structures and motif compositions. Genetic structure analysis showed that most SiGRAS genes lacked introns. Some SiGRAS genes were derived from gene duplication events, and segmental duplications may have contributed more to GRAS gene family expansion than tandem duplications. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction showed significant differences in the expression of SiGRAS genes in different tissues and stages of fruits development, which indicated the complexity of the physiological functions of SiGRAS. In addition, exogenous paclobutrazol treatment significantly altered the transcription levels of DELLA subfamily members, downregulated the gibberellin content, and decreased the plant height of foxtail millet, while it increased the fruit weight. In addition, SiGRAS13 and SiGRAS25 may have the potential for genetic improvement and functional gene research in foxtail millet. Conclusions Collectively, this study will be helpful for further analysing the biological function of SiGRAS. Our results may contribute to improving the genetic breeding of foxtail millet.

Abstract Background Clinical notes are unstructured text documents generated by clinicians during patient encounters, generally are annotated with International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes, which give formatted information about the diagnosis and treatment. ICD code has shown its potentials in many fields, but manual coding is labor-intensive and error-prone, lead to researches of automatic coding. Two specific challenges of this task are (1) given an annotated clinical notes, the reasons behind specific diagnoses and treatments are implicit; (2) explainability is important for practical automatic coding method, the method should not only explain its prediction output but also have explainable internal mechanics. This study aims to develop an explainable CNN approach to address these two challenges. Method Our key idea is that for the automatic ICD coding task, the presence of informative snippets in the clinical text that correlated with each code plays an important role in the prediction of codes, and an informative snippet can be considered as a local and low-level feature. We infer that there exists a correspondence between a convolution filter and a local and low-level feature. Base on the inference, we come up with the Shallow and Wide Attention convolutional Mechanism (SWAM) to improve the CNN-based models’ ability to learn local and low-level features for each label. Results We evaluate our approach on MIMIC-III, an open-access dataset of ICU medical records. Our approach substantially outperforms previous results on top-50 medical code prediction on MIMIC-III dataset, the precision of the worst-performing 10% labels in previous works is increased from 0% to 53% on average. We attribute this improvement to SWAM, by which the wide architecture with attention mechanism gives the model ability to more extensively learn the unique features of different codes, and we prove it by an ablation experiment. Besides, we perform manual analysis of the performance imbalance between different codes, and preliminary conclude the characteristics that determine the difficulty of learning specific codes. Conclusions Our main contributions can be summarized into the following three: (1) We present local and low-level features, a.k.a. informative snippets play an important role in the automatic ICD coding task, and the informative snippets extracted from the clinical text provide explanations for each code. (2) We propose that there exists a correspondence between a convolution filter and a local and low-level feature. A combination of wide and shallow convolutional layer and attention layer can help the CNN-based models better learn local and low-level features. (3) We improved the precision of the worst-performing 10% labels from 0 to 53% on average.

This paper focuses on the hydrodynamic interaction between the large floating body and a small transfer platform in a jettyless floating transfer system. A high-order boundary-element method combined with a direct time-domain-solution method to calculate and analyze the hydrodynamic response of the small platform while berthed with the fixed large floating body and freely floating large body under wave action was applied and compared with the hydrodynamic response of a single small transfer platform. It was found that when the large floating body and the small transfer platform were both located on the leeward side, they had little mutual influence, and the hydrodynamic response agreed well with that of the single small transfer platform and the single large floating body. While the small platform was located on the leeward side of the large floating body, it significantly affected the hydrodynamic response of the platform, resulting in a significant reduction in horizontal motion and pitch motion, meaning that the shielding effect was significant. Within a certain range of wave periods, the heave-motion amplitudes can be significantly reduced, but beyond that range, they increase. Therefore, it is important to carefully consider the relative motions of LNG transport ships and small platforms when connecting them via aerial jumper pipes in jettyless floating transfer systems.

With the widespread popularity of Wireless Mobile Networks (WMNs) in our daily life, the huge risk to disclose personal privacy of massive graph structure data in WMNs receives more and more attention. Particularly, as a special type of graph data in WMNs, the directed graph contains an amount of sensitive personal information. To provide secure and reliable privacy preservation for directed graphs in WMNs, we develop a node differential privacy-based method, which combines differential privacy with graph modification. In the method, the original directed graph is first divided into several sub-graphs after it is transformed into a weighted graph. Then, in each sub-graph, the node degree sequences are obtained by using an exponential mechanism and micro-aggregation is adopted to get the noised node degree sequences, which is used to generate a synthetic directed sub-graph through edge modification. Finally, all synthetic sub-graphs are merged into a synthetic directed graph that can preserve the original directed graph. The theoretical analysis proves that the proposed method satisfies differential privacy. The results of the experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented method in privacy preservation and data utility.

Rocks and minerals buried in the earth’s surface usually undergo weathering processes and change color in the burying environment. A kind of yellow Chinese stamp stone named “Lumu stone”, which is buried in a yellowish weathering crust (yellowish soil), was selected to investigate its color changes in the weathering processes. In this study, the appearance features, mineral components, micromorphology, spectroscopy characteristics, and color causation of the “Lumu stone” were studied by using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA), a laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS), and a UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectrum. The “Lumu stone” usually exhibits a darker yellow outer layer and a lighter yellow core, suggesting that yellow color permeated into the stone from the surface to the core gradually and the color is secondary forming. The results from XRD and SEM show the studied samples are mainly composed of dickite and illite. The individual particles of the dickite and illite are about 2–5 μm, randomly distributing in the three-dimensional space and constituting voids among the particles. The acid pickling experiments using HCl coupled with KSCN confirmed that the mineral phases that caused the yellow color of the matrix are iron oxide and hydroxide. On the other hand, goethite and hematite were observed gathering in the yellow and brown-red cracks on the “Lumu stone” by SEM study. However, iron oxide and hydroxide in the matrix were difficult to observe and detect among the dickite and illite aggregates by SEM and XRD methods. It indicates that they may be nanoscale in size and very low in content. According to the calculation of the second derivative of Kubelka-Munk (K-M) transformed diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS) curves obtained from UV-Vis, the characteristic peaks of goethite and hematite were found in the yellow matrix, and their contributions to the color were confirmed. The concentrations of goethite and hematite were calculated to be 0.32 to 1.87 g/kg and 0.22 to 0.93 g/kg in the studied samples, respectively. In this study, a series of methods were employed to detect very low levels of goethite and hematite in the samples undergoing weathering processes. Additionally, nanoscale goethite and hematite were considered newly formed minerals when buried in the weathering processes and may gradually move into the voids among phyllosilicate particles. Therefore, they turned the “Lumu stone” yellow.

Objective: The RNA-binding protein RBM10 can regulate apoptosis during the proliferation and migration of pancreatic cancer, endometrial cancer, and osteosarcoma cells; however, the molecular mechanism underlying lung adenocarcinoma is rarely reported. Recent studies have detected multiple truncated and missense mutations in RBM10 in lung adenocarcinoma, but the role of RBM10 in lung adenocarcinoma is unclear. This study mainly explored the immune regulation mechanism of RBM10 in the development of lung adenocarcinoma and its influence on sensitivity to targeted therapy drugs. Methods: The transcriptome data of CGAP were used to analyze the RNA-seq data of lung adenocarcinoma patients from different subgroups by using the CIBERSORT algorithm to infer the relative proportion of various immune infiltrating cells, and Spearman correlation analysis was performed to determine the gene expression and immune cell content. In addition, this study utilized drug trial data from the GDSC database. The IC50 estimates for each specific targeted therapy were obtained by using a regression method, and the regression and prediction accuracy were tested via ten cross-validations with the GDSC training set. An immunohistochemical test was performed on the samples of 20 patients with lung adenocarcinoma in the subcomponent analysis of immune cells, and the protein expression of RBM10 in lung adenocarcinoma tissues was verified by cellular immunofluorescence assays. Nucleic acids were extracted at low temperatures, and qRT-PCR was used to verify the expression levels of the mRNA of RBM10 in lung adenocarcinoma tissues and normal tissues (p < 0.05). Results: After screening and inclusion using a machine language, the results showed that RBM10 was significantly highly expressed in the lung adenocarcinoma tissues. The related signaling pathways were mainly concentrated in ncRNA processing, rRNA metabolic processes, ribosome biogenesis, and the regulation of translation. The qRT-PCR for 20 lung adenocarcinoma tissues showed that the expression of RBM10 in these tissues was significantly different from that in normal tissues (p = 0.0255). Immunohistochemistry analysis and cell immunofluorescence staining also confirmed that RBM10 was involved in the immune regulation of lung adenocarcinoma tissues, and the number of immune cell aggregations was significantly higher than that of the control group. RBM10 regulates B cell memory-CIBERSORT (p = 0.042) and B cell memory-CIBERSOTRT-abs (p = 0.027), cancer-associated fibroblast-EPIC (p = 0.001), cancer-associated fibroblast- MCPCounter (p = 0.0037), etc. The risk score was significantly associated with the sensitivity of patients to lapatinib (p = 0.049), nilotinib (p = 0.015), pazopanib (p = 0.001), and sorafenib (p = 0.048). Conclusions: RBM10 can inhibit the proliferation and invasion of lung adenocarcinoma cells through negative regulation and promote the apoptosis of lung adenocarcinoma cells through immunomodulatory mechanisms. The expression level of RBM10 affects the efficacy of targeted drug therapy and the survival prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma patients, which has a certain guiding significance for the clinical treatment of these patients.

Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is a signal processing technology used to identify the modulation type of unknown signals without prior information such as modulation parameters for drone communications. In recent years, deep learning (DL) has been widely used in AMC methods due to its powerful feature extraction ability. The significant performance of DL-based AMC methods is highly dependent on large amount of data. However, with the increasingly complex signal environment and the emergence of new signals, several recognition tasks have difficulty obtaining sufficient high-quality signals. To address this problem, we propose an AMC method based on a deep residual neural network with masked modeling (DRMM). Specifically, masked modeling is adopted to improve the performance of a deep neural network with limited signal samples. Both complex-valued and real-valued residual neural networks (ResNet) play an important role in extracting signal features for identification. Several typical experiments are conducted to evaluate our proposed DRMM-based AMC method on the RadioML 2016.10A dataset and a simulated dataset, and comparison experiments with existing AMC methods are also conducted. The simulation results illustrate that our proposed DRMM-based AMC method achieves better performance in the case of limited signal samples with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than other existing methods.

Specimens of Clavulinopsis (Clavariaceae, Agaricales) collected in China were studied using morphological and molecular methods. Six species—C. aspersa, C. bicolor, C. bispora, C. erubescens, C. incarnata, and C. tropicalis—are described as new to science, and C. trigonospora is a newly recorded species in China. Phylogenetic analysis was conducted based on a combined dataset of internal transcribed spacer and nuclear ribosomal RNA large subunit sequences. The phylogenetic reconstruction revealed that the six new species each formed an independent lineage, and the samples of C. trigonospora from China were nested with accessions of C. trigonospora collected from Italy. The morphology of the seven Chinese species is described in detail, and is illustrated with line drawings and photographs. A key to the known Clavulinopsis species in China is provided.

The forest fire burned area is one of the most basic factors used to describe forest fires and plays a vital role in damage assessment. The development of the NSSI-NDVI vegetation index triangular space method enables simultaneous calculation of the flammable non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV), combustible photosynthetic vegetation (PV), and incombustible bare soil (BS) fractional cover in forest areas. This can be used to compensate for the calculation method that was based on NDVI vegetation index only by comparing vegetation cover before and after forest fires, with the omission of the NPV burned area. To this end, the NSSI-NDVI triangular space shape consistency before and after forest fires was elucidated through combustion and ash wetting experiments. In addition, the feasibility of the NSSI-NDVI triangular space method for the accurate calculation of the post-fire vegetation damage area was verified. Finally, the applicability and accuracy of this research method were verified based on 10 m spatial resolution satellite hyperspectral images from before and after the forest fire in Lushan, Sichuan Province, China. The NSSI-NDVI triangular space method was used to calculate the PV, NPV, and BS coverage simultaneously, and component transformation was used to calculate the burned area and burned site separately.

Polystyrene (PS) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) exist widely in the environment. However, their distribution in organisms remains unclear. We used three sizes (50 nm, 500 nm, and 5 μm) of PS and DEHP to study the distribution and accumulation of PS, DEHP, and mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) in mice and nerve cell models (HT22 and BV2 cells) and their potential toxicity. Results showed that PS entered the blood of mice, and the distribution of different particle sizes in different tissues was different. After the combined exposure to PS and DEHP, PS carried DEHP, which significantly increased the DEHP content and MEHP content and the highest content of MEHP was in the brain. With the decrease in PS particle size, the contents of PS, DEHP, and MEHP in the body increased. The levels of inflammatory factors were increased in the serum of the PS or/and DEHP group. In addition, 50 nm polystyrene can carry MEHP into nerve cells. These results suggest for the first time that PS and DEHP combined exposure can induce systemic inflammation, and the brain is an important target organ of PS and DEHP combined exposure. This study may serve as a reference for further evaluation of the neurotoxicity induced by combined exposure to PS and DEHP.

The detection of drones using radar presents challenges due to their small radar cross-section (RCS) values, slow velocities, and low altitudes. Traditional signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) detectors often fail to detect weak radar signals from small drones, resulting in high “Missed Target” rates due to the dependence of SNR values on RCS and detection range. To overcome this issue, we propose the use of a Doppler signal-to-clutter ratio (DSCR) detector that can extract both amplitude and Doppler information from drone signals. Theoretical calculations suggest that the DSCR of a target is less dependent on the detection range than the SNR. Experimental results using a Ku-band pulsed-Doppler surface surveillance radar and an X-band marine surveillance radar demonstrate that the DSCR detector can effectively extract radar signals from small drones, even when the signals are similar to clutter levels. Compared to the SNR detector, the DSCR detector reduces missed target rates by utilizing a lower detection threshold. Our tests include quad-rotor, fixed-wing, and hybrid vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drones, with mean SNR values comparable to the surrounding clutter but with DSCR values above 10 dB, significantly higher than the clutter. The simplicity and low radar requirements of the DSCR detector make it a promising solution for drone detection in radar engineering applications.

Abstract Siraitia grosvenorii (LHG) is widely used as a medicinal and edible material around the world. The objective of this study was to develop an effective method for the authentication of the geographical origin of LHG in its main producing area Guangxi, China, which is identified as Chinese Protected Designation of Origin product, against other producing regions in China. The content of 14 elements (K, Na, Ca, P, Mg, Al, B, Ba, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, and Sr) of 114 LHG samples was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Multivariate analysis was then performed to classify the geographical origin of LHG samples. The contents of multielement display an obvious trend of clustering according to the geographical origin of LHG samples based on radar plot and principal component analysis. Finally, three supervised statistical techniques, including linear discriminant analysis (LDA), k-nearest neighbours (k-NN), and support vector machine (SVM), were applied to develop classification models. Finally, 40 unknown LHG samples were used to evaluate the predictive ability of model and discrimination rate of 100%, 97.5% and 100% were obtained for LDA, k-NN, and SVM, respectively. This study indicated that it is feasible to attribute unknown LHG samples to its geographical origin based on its multielement content coupled with chemometric techniques.

Abstract Background Members of the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor family perform indispensable functions in various biological processes, such as plant growth, seed maturation, and abiotic stress responses. However, the bHLH family in foxtail millet (Setaria italica), an important food and feed crop, has not been thoroughly studied. Results In this study, 187 bHLH genes of foxtail millet (SibHLHs) were identified and renamed according to the chromosomal distribution of the SibHLH genes. Based on the number of conserved domains and gene structure, the SibHLH genes were divided into 21 subfamilies and two orphan genes via phylogenetic tree analysis. According to the phylogenetic tree, the subfamilies 15 and 18 may have experienced stronger expansion in the process of evolution. Then, the motif compositions, gene structures, chromosomal spread, and gene duplication events were discussed in detail. A total of sixteen tandem repeat events and thirty-eight pairs of segment duplications were identified in bHLH family of foxtail millet. To further investigate the evolutionary relationship in the SibHLH family, we constructed the comparative syntenic maps of foxtail millet associated with representative monocotyledons and dicotyledons species. Finally, the gene expression response characteristics of 15 typical SibHLH genes in different tissues and fruit development stages, and eight different abiotic stresses were analysed. The results showed that there were significant differences in the transcription levels of some SibHLH members in different tissues and fruit development stages, and different abiotic stresses, implying that SibHLH members might have different physiological functions. Conclusions In this study, we identified 187 SibHLH genes in foxtail millet and further analysed the evolution and expression patterns of the encoded proteins. The findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the bHLH family in foxtail millet, which will inform further studies on the functional characteristics of SibHLH genes.

Abstract LightGBM is an ensemble model of decision trees for classification and regression prediction. We demonstrate its utility in genomic selection-assisted breeding with a large dataset of inbred and hybrid maize lines. LightGBM exhibits superior performance in terms of prediction precision, model stability, and computing efficiency through a series of benchmark tests. We also assess the factors that are essential to ensure the best performance of genomic selection prediction by taking complex scenarios in crop hybrid breeding into account. LightGBM has been implemented as a toolbox, CropGBM, encompassing multiple novel functions and analytical modules to facilitate genomically designed breeding in crops.

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is characterized by the occurrence of at least 2 symptoms of nasal itching, nasal blockage, rhinorrhea, and sneezing, when not afflicted with a cold or flu, with defined atopic sensitization demonstrated by skin prick test or specific IgE responses. Besides the detriment to standard of living and economic burden of AR, both multicentre and single-cohort studies have observed an increase in AR prevalence in Asia over time. Methods: In total, 12 872 individuals, with mean age 22.1 years (SD = 4.8), were recruited from universities in Singapore and Malaysia. Each participant provided epidemiological data based on an investigator-administered questionnaire adapted from the validated International Study of Allergies and Asthma in Childhood (ISAAC) protocol, and atopy status was determined using a skin prick test (SPT) performed by qualified staff. AR was diagnosed according to Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) guidelines and a positive SPT result. Results: Sensitization (determined by SPT) to either Blomia tropicalis or Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus was prevalent in 66.5% of the cohort. Current rhinitis (manifesting ≥2 rhinitis symptoms, within the past 12 months) was observed in 48.9% of our population, while AR, which included atopy status, was estimated at 39.4%. Sneezing and rhinorrhea were the most common symptoms among AR cases. AR prevalence decreased with increasing age (OR: 0.979; 95% CI: 0.969–0.989), while male gender (OR: 2.053; 95% CI: 1.839–2.294), and a parental history of allergic diseases (OR: 2.750; 95% CI: 2.284–3.316) were significant risk factors for AR. Burns can impair the barrier function of the skin, and small burns can also cause high mortality. The WHO has described that over 180,000 people die of burns worldwide each year. Thus, the treatment of burn wounds is a major clinical challenge. Chitooligosaccharides (COS) are alkaline amino oligosaccharides with small molecular weights obtained by enzyme or chemical degradation of chitosan. With the characteristics of biocompatibility, water solubility and degradability, it has attracted increasing attention in the fields of biomedicine. In the present study, we used COS to treat deep second-degree burn wounds of rat skin and found that COS was able to promote wound healing. We also revealed that COS could promote fibroblast proliferation. Transcriptome sequencing analysis was performed on COS-treated fibroblasts to identify the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that COS was able to promote wound healing through regulation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway and growth factor Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF). Our results provide a potential drug for burn wound therapy and the related molecular mechanism.

Background: Keloid, also known as connective tissue hyperplasia, is a benign proliferative disorder with a global distribution. The available therapeutic interventions are steroid injections, surgical removal of keloids, radiotherapy, compression therapy, the application of cryosurgery, and many other methods.Objectives: Existing treatments or approaches for keloids may lead to similar or even larger lesions at the site of keloid excision, leading to a high recurrence rate. Therefore, this study aims at identifying a new gene-based therapy for the treatment of keloids.Methods: An ASPN-siRNA/nanoparticle combination (si-ASPN) and a negative siRNA/nanoparticle complex (NC) was developed on the basis of bioinformatics studies and used in vitro and in vivo experiments.Results: The results showed a strong correlation between the development of keloids and high expression of ASPN protein. With the expression of ASPN protein greatly reduced in keloid fibroblasts and nude mice allografts after treatment with si-ASPN, the collagen and fibroblasts were also uniform, thinner, parallel and regular.Conclusion: All the above experimental results suggest that keloid and ASPN are closely related and both fibroblast growth and metabolism of keloid are inhibited after silencing ASPN. Therefore, ASPN-siRNA delivered via nanoparticles can serve as a novel intervention therapy for the treatment of keloids.

Urbanization leads to changes in land use, and the expansion of impervious surfaces leads to an increase in flood vulnerability. Predicting and analyzing these landscape pattern changes are important in the early stages of urban planning. In practice, the threshold for obtaining comprehensive and detailed hydrological and meteorological data is high, which makes it difficult for landscape and urban planners to quickly evaluate urban floods. To compensate for these trends, we took Nanjing, China, as the study site and discussed the leading flood vulnerability landscape patterns based on quantitative assessments. We introduced catastrophe theory to integrate three indicators and seven subfactors for flood vulnerability assessment: exposure, including precipitation; sensitivity, including elevation, slope, soil and drainage density; and adaptability, including land use and forest coverage. Then, we calculated the landscape pattern metrics (shape index, fractal dimension index, related circumscribing circle, contiguity index and landscape division index) at the class level. Finally, we divided the city into four subregions, established regression models for the subregions and the whole city, and deduced the leading flood vulnerability landscape patterns in each region and the whole city. We found that the leading landscape patterns varied among different regions. According to the research results, the landscape pattern indexes identified in this paper can be interpreted intuitively, which can provide a reference for modifying the planning layout of regional green infrastructure, optimizing the vulnerability of urban floods, and providing a basis for further improving Nanjing urban planning and alleviating the urban flood vulnerability. The methods proposed herein also will benefit land use and green infrastructure management in other regions lacking meteorological and hydrological data.

Background Iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS) diagnosis heavily relies on an imaging test. However, non-invasive and contrast-free imaging test for the diagnosis of IVCS remains a big challenge. To address this issue, this prospective study aimed to assess the image quality and diagnostic performance of a magnetic resonance imaging technique, black-blood venous imaging (BBVI), in detecting IVCS by comparing it with contrast-enhanced computed tomography venography (CTV) and using invasive digital subtraction angiography (DSA) as the reference. Methods We enrolled 105 patients, and all patients underwent BBVI, CTV, and DSA examinations. We compared the consistency of CTV and BBVI image quality and their consistency in diagnosing the rate of iliac vein stenosis in IVCS patients. Using the consensus DSA as a reference, the sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and accuracy of BBVI and CTV and their diagnostic agreement with DSA were calculated. Results BBVI demonstrated high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for the diagnosis of IVCS, without contrast agents. BBVI and CTV are quite in diagnosis IVCS. Quite SE (67.8% vs 68.3%), SP (94.8% vs 94.8%), PPV (98.0% vs 98.0%), NPV (46.2% vs 46.9%) and ACC (75.3% vs 75.7%) were obtained by BBVI in comparison with CTV. Conclusion BBVI has comparable diagnostic performance with CTV. It may be a viable alternative to CTV techniques in screening the IVCS without contrast agents and free of ionizing radiation.

Stroke is the leading cause of disability and death worldwide, with ischemic stroke occurring in ~5% of the global population every year. Recently, many studies have been conducted on the inflammatory response after stroke. Microglial/macrophage polarization has a dual function and is critical to the pathology of ischemic stroke. Microglial/macrophage activation is important in reducing neuronal apoptosis, enhancing neurogenesis, and promoting functional recovery after ischemic stroke. In this review, we investigate the physiological characteristics and functions of microglia in the brain, the activation and phenotypic polarization of microglia and macrophages after stroke, the signaling mechanisms of polarization states, and the contribution of microglia to brain pathology and repair. We summarize recent advances in stroke-related microglia research, highlighting breakthroughs in therapeutic strategies for microglial responses after stroke, thereby providing new ideas for the treatment of ischemic stroke.

Aberrant sialylation is frequently observed in tumor development, but which sialyltransferases are involved in this event are not well known. Herein, we performed comprehensive analyses on six ST3GAL family members, the α-2,3 sialyltransferases, in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) from public datasets. Only ST3GAL5 was consistently and significantly overexpressed in ccRCC (n = 791 in total), compared with normal kidney tissues. Its overexpression was positively correlated with tumor stage, grade, and the poor prognosis in ccRCC patients. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analyses indicated the involvement of ST3GAL5 in tumor immunoregulation. Then we revealed that ST3GAL5 expression showed a positive correlation with CD8+ T cell infiltration, using multiple tools on TIMER2.0 web server. Notably, ST3GAL5 overexpression was further identified to be associated with expression signature of CD8+ T cell exhaustion in ccRCC samples from three datasets (n = 867 in total; r > 0.3, p < 0.001). In our own ccRCC cohort (n = 45), immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining confirmed that ST3GAL5 overexpression was accompanied by high CD8+ T cell infiltration with the increased exhaustion markers. Altogether, ST3GAL5 as a promising prognostic biomarker with CD8+ T cell exhaustion in ccRCC is indicated.
