Abstract

High temperature (>125°C) resistant long-wavelength semiconductor lasers are attractive as light sources in a variety of harsh environments. Here, we report extremely high temperature continuous-wave (CW) operation of QD lasers on GaAs substrate emitted at 1300-nm-range by enhancing gain and increasing the quantized-energy separation of the QD active layers. A suppression of the In out-diffusion during MBE from self-assembled InAs QDs significantly reduced inhomogeneous broadening with high QD sheet density maintained. QD-FP laser exhibited record high CW-lasing temperature for long-wavelength laser of 220°C and QD-DFB laser also exhibited high CW-lasing temperature of 150°C by employing high gain QD active media.

Abstract

We have constructed the high performance ECRISs for RIKEN RI Beam factory project and successfully produced intense beams of highly charged heavy ions. RIKEN 18 GHz ECRIS can especially produce intense beams of medium charge states of heavy ions (1.3 mA of Ar[sup 8+], 200 e/µA of Xe[sup 20+]) by applying the various techniques, e.g., A1 cylinder method, biased electrode method, optimization of the plasma electrode position. Very recently, we successfully produced intense beams of highly charged heavy ions (10 eµA of Xe[sup 30+], 1eµA of Xe[sup 36+]) from the Liquid He free SC-ECRIS with operational frequency of 14 GHz. Abstract

The differential cross sections of p-barp elastic scattering have been measured at incident beam momenta of 390, 490, 590, 690, and 780 MeV/c. The results are compared with the predictions of various N-barN potential models. None of these models completely explains the present results.

Abstract

In order to supply a high-intensity and stable 48Ca beam from the RIKEN 18-GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source, we are conducting operational tests of a micro-oven. A mixture of CaO and Al powders is placed into the crucible of the micro-oven and heated to produce metallic calcium by a reductive reaction. The successful production of a calcium beam was confirmed. In addition, we reduced the material consumption rate by using a so-called "hot liner," and we enhanced the beam intensity by applying a negative voltage bias to the micro-oven, the effect of which is similar to the effect of a "biased disk." 227. A population study on risk factors for insomnia among adult Japanese women: a possible effect of road traffic volume.

Abstract

In an effort to identify risk factors for insomnia and determine the contribution of nightime road traffic volume to insomnia in the general population, a questionnaire survey was carried out among 3,600 adult Japanese women living in eight urban residential areas. The crude prevalence rate of insomnia was 11.2%. Multivariate analysis revealed that aging, living with a child/children aged six or younger, undergoing medical treatment, experiencing major life events, having an irregular bedtime, having a sleep apnealike symptom, and living near a road with a heavy volume of traffic are risk factors for insomnia. Taking into account other risk factors, there was a level-response relationship between the nighttime traffic volume of main roads and the risk of insomnia in the subjects living in the zones 0-20 m from these roads. These results suggest that road traffic noise raises the sound level in bedrooms in such zones, and consequently the prevalence rate of insomnia among the residents, and that noise-induced insomnia is an important public health problem, at least in highly urbanized areas. To confirm this, a further study on noise exposure is needed.

229. Experimental simulation of engine knock by means of a preheated static combustion chamber

Abstract

Vibratory combustions showing the same features as those of reciprocating engine knock are observed in an electrically preheated, two dimensional stainless steel spark ignited combustion chamber, using a mixture of n-butane and oxidizer (21% of oxygen and 79% of argon in volume) with equivalence ratio of 0.9. Combustions are performed for different initial temperatures, varying from 303 K up to 513 K, for a given initial density, so as to keep a constant energy content. The results of the experiments, undertaken for several initial densities between 6.2 kg/m3and 12.3 kg/m3show that for an initial temperature lower than 423 K, only smooth pressure oscillations, whose amplitude is gradually amplified but never exceeds 1 bar, and due to acoustic-flame interaction, are observed. In contrast, with initial temperature over 423 K, pressure vibrations, initiated by strong pressure pulses which break into pronounced damped pressure waves, characteristic of knocking combustion, are detected. The two types of vibratory phenomena are clearly distinguished by pressure-time-history signal analysis, and autoignition of the end-gas, which is the last part of the fresh mixture to be consumed by the normal flame propagation. The autoignition is evidenced by high speed schlieren cinematography during knocking combustions. Finally, means to characterize and quantify knock intensity related to the mixture used are studied.

232. Circus movement in dissociated embryonic cells of a teleost, Oryzias latipes

Abstract

The dissociated early embryonic cells of the fresh water fish, Oryzias latipes, protrude hyaline lobopodia, which tend to rotate around the cell circumference in a propagating wave. Cells from late blastula or gastrula continuously show this “circus movement”, while most cells up to early blastula are rounded. The linear velocity of the lobopodium was estimated by means of time-lapse cinemicrography. The velocity increases slightly as cell diameter increases. The effects of pH, temperature and osmotic pressure of the immersion media on the movement were also quantitatively investigated. Cells become rounded and do not form lobopodial blebs when immersed in media below pH 5. The velocity is reduced by decreasing temperature, but the movement continues even at 5 degrees C. Cells placed in hypertonic salt solutions become crenated and do not continuously demonstrate the circus movement.

233. Processing of the precursors to neurotensin and other bioactive peptides by cathepsin E.

Abstract

Cathepsin E (EC 3.4.23.34), an intracellular aspartic proteinase, was purified from monkey intestine by simple procedures that included affinity chromatography and fast protein liquid chromatography. Cathepsin E was very active at weakly acidic pH in the processing of chemically synthesized precursors such as the precursor to neurotensin/neuromedin, proopiomelanocortin, the precursor to xenopsin, and angiotensinogen. The processing sites were adjacent to a dibasic motif in the former two precursors and at hydrophobic recognition sites in the latter two. The common structural features that specified the processing sites were found in the carboxyl-terminal sequences of the active peptide moieties of these precursors; namely, the sequence Pro-Xaa-X'aa-hydrophobic amino acid was found at positions P4 through P1. Pro at the P4 position is thought to be important for directing the processing sites of the various precursor molecules to the active site of cathepsin E. Although the positions of Xaa and X'aa were occupied by various amino acids, including hydrophobic and aromatic amino acids, some of these had a negative effect, as typically observed when Glu/Arg and Pro were present at the P3 and P2 positions, respectively. Cathepsin D was much less active or was almost inactive in the processing of the precursors to neurotensin and related peptides as a result of the inability of the Pro-directed conformation of the precursor molecules to gain access to the active site of cathepsin D. Thus, the consensus sequence of precursors, Pro-Xaa-X'aa-hydrophobic amino acid, might not only generate the best conformation for cleavage by cathepsin E but might be responsible for the difference in specificities between cathepsins E and D.

234. The complete amino acid sequence of monkey progastricsin.

Abstract

The complete amino acid sequence of progastricsin from the Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata) was determined. Progastricsin is composed of 374 residues, including the gastricsin moiety of 331 residues and the activation segment of 43 residues. Upon activation under acidic conditions, progastricsin was converted to gastricsin via the intermediate protein species. NH2-terminal sequence determination of these protein species enabled us to deduce the NH2-terminal 78-residue sequence of progastricsin, including the 43-residue activation segment. The complete sequence of the gastricsin moiety was determined using peptide fragments obtained by several chemical and enzymatic cleavages. The molecular weight of progastricsin was determined to be 40,785. As compared with pepsinogen A of the same monkey species, deletion of 4 residues and insertion of 5 residues were observed. Although monkey progastricsin and pepsinogen A have highly homologous sequences around the two active site aspartyl residues, the homology between these proteins is rather small (49% identity). This indicates that progastricsin diverged from pepsinogen A in the early phase of the evolution of gastric aspartyl proteinases.

The lasing wavelength was from 1.20 to 1.27 μm with different composition at room temperature. Abstract

480 pp. (2010)., The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected almost 1 billion Y(4S) events in its decade of operation. Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB is under construction, to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35 /cm^2 /s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed. The Technical Design Report presents physics motivation, basic methods of the accelerator upgrade, as well as key improvements of the detector.
