- Abstract
Anthropogenic changes in land use and land cover (LULC) during the pre-industrial Holocene could have affected regional and global climate. Existing scenarios of LULC changes during the Holocene are based on relatively simple assumptions and highly uncertain estimates of population changes through time. Archaeological and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions have the potential to refine these assumptions and estimates. The Past Global Changes (PAGES) LandCover6k initiative is working towards improved reconstructions of LULC globally. In this paper, we document the types of archaeological data that are being collated and how they will be used to improve LULC reconstructions. Given the large methodological uncertainties involved, both in reconstructing LULC from the archaeological data and in implementing these reconstructions into global scenarios of LULC, we propose a protocol to evaluate the revised scenarios using independent pollen-based reconstructions of land cover and climate. Further evaluation of the revised scenarios involves carbon cycle model simulations to determine whether the LULC reconstructions are consistent with constraints provided by ice core records of CO2 evolution and modern-day LULC. Finally, the protocol outlines how the improved LULC reconstructions will be used in palaeoclimate simulations in the Palaeoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project to quantify the magnitude of anthropogenic impacts on climate through time and ultimately to improve the realism of Holocene climate simulations.

- Abstract
Statistics can be used to describe data or make inferences about populations using samples. Median values (the 50th percentile) better represent central tendency of data samples than means (averages), particularly when data have extreme values. Errors resulting from use of inferential statistics when using classical hypothesis testing include type I (finding a difference between groups when one does not exist) and type II (failure to find a true difference) errors. Confounding variables (those that vary with both the dependent variable and independent variable) may lead to spurious associations. Classical hypothesis testing and reporting only p-values tends to be greatly overused and overemphasized. Confidence intervals provide a range of values for a sample within a certain probability (commonly 95%). Confidence intervals can thus describe sizes of likely differences between samples, and are much more clinically useful information than only p-values. Before doing a study, the required sample size should be calculated to assess study feasibility. Doing so requires specification of the acceptable risk of type I and II errors and the size of the lowest clinically meaningful difference between groups.

- Abstract
Measurements of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization may reveal the presence of a background of gravitational waves produced during cosmic inflation, providing thus a test of inflationary models. The Q&U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is an experiment designed to measure the CMB polarization. It is based on the novel concept of bolometric interferometry, which combines the sensitivity of bolometric detectors with the properties of beam synthesis and control of calibration offered by interferometers. To modulate and extract the input polarized signal of the CMB, QUBIC exploits Stokes polarimetry based on a rotating half-wave plate (HWP). In this work, we illustrate the design of the QUBIC instrument, focusing on the polarization modulation system, and we present preliminary results of beam calibrations and the performance of the HWP rotator at 300 K.

- Abstract
The Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology, QUBIC, is an innovative experiment designed to measure the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background and in particular the signature left therein by the inflationary expansion of the Universe. The expected signal is extremely faint, thus extreme sensitivity and systematic control are necessary in order to attempt this measurement. QUBIC addresses these requirements using an innovative approach combining the sensitivity of Transition Edge Sensor cryogenic bolometers, with the deep control of systematics characteristic of interferometers. This makes QUBIC unique with respect to others classical imagers experiments devoted to the CMB polarization. In this contribution we report a description of the QUBIC instrument including recent achievements and the demonstration of the bolometric interferometry performed in lab. QUBIC will be deployed at the observation site in Alto Chorrillos, in Argentina at the end of 2019.

- Abstract
The Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) Technical Demonstrator (TD) aiming to shows the feasibility of the combination of interferometry and bolometric detection. The electronic readout system is based on an array of 128 NbSi Transition Edge Sensors cooled at 350mK readout with 128 SQUIDs at 1K controlled and amplified by an Application Specific Integrated Circuit at 40K. This readout design allows a 128:1 Time Domain Multiplexing. We report the design and the performance of the detection chain in this paper. The technological demonstrator unwent a campaign of test in the lab. Evaluation of the QUBIC bolometers and readout electronics includes the measurement of I-V curves, time constant and the Noise Equivalent Power. Currently the mean Noise Equivalent Power is ∼ 2 x 10-16W= p √Hz

In this paper, we describe QUBIC, an experiment that will observe the polarized microwave sky with a novel approach, which combines the sensitivity of state-of-the-art bolometric detectors with the systematic effects control typical of interferometers. QUBIC’s unique features are the so-called “self-calibration”, a technique that allows us to clean the measured data from instrumental effects, and its spectral imaging power, i.e., the ability to separate the signal into various sub-bands within each frequency band. QUBIC will observe the sky in two main frequency bands: 150 GHz and 220 GHz. The Hudson Bay Lowlands (HBL) is the second largest boreal wetland ecosystem in the world and an important natural source of global atmospheric methane. We quantify the HBL methane emissions by using the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model to simulate aircraft measurements over the HBL from the ARCTAS and pre-HIPPO campaigns in May-July 2008, together with continuous 2004-2008 surface observations at Fraserdale (southern edge of HBL) and Alert (Arctic background). The difference in methane concentrations between Fraserdale and Alert is shown to be a good indicator of HBL emissions, and implies a sharp seasonal onset of emissions in late May (consistent with the aircraft data), a peak in July-August, and a seasonal shut-off in September. The model, in which seasonal variation of emission is mainly driven by surface temperature, reproduces well the observations in summer but its seasonal shoulders are too broad. We suggest that this reflects the suppression of emissions by snow cover and greatly improve the model simulation by accounting for this effect. Our resulting best estimate for HBL methane emissions is 2.3 Tg/a, several-fold higher than previous estimates (Roulet et al., 1994; Worthy et al., 2000).

Summary Objective Assess the role of inflammation on operating time in younger vs. older bariatric surgery patients. Methods Fifty‐five younger (F: 46, Age: 34.9 ± 4.0 years, body mass index [BMI]: 48.2 ± 1.0 kg m−2) and 48 older (F: 34, Age: 57.0 ± 5.1 years, BMI: 46.8 ± 1.0 kg m−2) adults were studied prior to surgery. Blood pressure, glycaemic control (fasting glucose/insulin, HbA1c), lipids (high‐density lipoprotein and triglycerides) and inflammation (monocyte chemoattractant protein‐1 [MCP‐1]) were assessed. Metabolic risk severity z‐scores were calculated from clinical outcomes. Omental adipose biopsies were collected at surgery for MCP‐1 protein analysis. Operating time was used to characterize surgical difficulty. Results Older vs. younger adults had higher HbA1c (P = 0.03). There was no difference in BMI, lipids, metabolic risk severity or insulin between groups, but operating time was longer in older vs. younger individuals (P = 0.04). Circulating MCP‐1 was also elevated in older vs. younger adults (P = 0.04) independent of HbA1c, although this was not explained by omental fat. Nevertheless, serum MCP‐1 was associated with increased metabolic risk severity (R = 0.27, P = 0.01).
