OBJECTIVE: To determine levels of the soluble form of the chemokine fractalkine (sFkn) and its receptor, CX(3)CR1, in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with neuropsychiatric involvement (NPSLE) and in SLE patients without neuropsychiatric involvement, and to assess their relationship with disease activity and organ damage. METHODS: Levels of sFkn in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Expression of Fkn and CX(3)CR1 was quantified using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Surface expression of CX(3)CR1 on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was determined by flow cytometry. Disease activity and organ damage were assessed using the SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) and the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology (SLICC/ACR) Damage Index, respectively. RESULTS: Serum sFkn levels were significantly higher in patients with SLE than in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or healthy controls. In addition, significant correlations between serum sFkn levels and the SLEDAI, the SLICC/ACR Damage Index, anti-double-stranded DNA and anti-Sm antibody titers, immune complex levels (C1q), and serum complement levels (CH50) were observed. Expression of CX(3)CR1 was significantly greater in PBMCs from patients with active SLE than in those from RA patients or healthy controls. Levels of sFkn were also significantly higher in CSF from untreated patients with newly diagnosed NPSLE than in SLE patients without neuropsychiatric involvement; treatment reduced both serum and CSF levels of sFkn in patients with SLE. CONCLUSION: Soluble Fkn and CX(3)CR1 may play key roles in the pathogenesis of SLE, including the neuropsychiatric involvement. Soluble Fkn is also a serologic marker of disease activity and organ damage in patients with SLE, and its measurement in CSF may be useful for the diagnosis of NPSLE and followup of patients with NPSLE. A phospholipid antigen that reacted with the serum antibody from a patient with peripheral neuropathy and paraproteinemia with both impaired sensory and motor functions, but not with sera from patients with only impaired sensory functions and healthy controls, was purified from bovine cauda equina as a minor component with a concentration of about 0.6 µg per gram wet-weight tissue. The structure of the phospholipid was characterized as lysophosphatidylinositol by means of thin-layer chromatography, gas–liquid chromatography, and negative-ion fast-atom-bombardment mass spectrometry. The major fatty acid component of this phospholipid was stearic acid (> 81%). Our data suggest the possible involvement of a lysophospholipid antigen in the immunopathogenesis of peripheral neuropathies with severe motor and sensory dysfunctions. There is an intriguing possibility that the difference in immunoreactivity of serum antibodies may underlie the differential clinical manifestations in patients with peripheral neuropathy and paraproteinemia. Magnetic fields are proposed to have played a critical role in some of the most enigmatic processes of planetary formation by mediating the rapid accretion of disk material onto the central star and the formation of the first solids. However, there have been no experimental constraints on the intensity of these fields. Here we show that dusty olivine-bearing chondrules from the Semarkona meteorite were magnetized in a nebular field of 54 ± 21 microteslas. This intensity supports chondrule formation by nebular shocks or planetesimal collisions rather than by electric currents, the x-wind, or other mechanisms near the Sun. This implies that background magnetic fields in the terrestrial planet-forming region were likely 5 to 54 microteslas, which is sufficient to account for measured rates of mass and angular momentum transport in protoplanetary disks., Physics, Version of Record

The discovery of two-dimensional electron gases at the heterointerface between two insulating perovskite-type oxides, such as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, provides opportunities for a new generation of all-oxide electronic devices. Key challenges remain for achieving interfacial electron mobilities much beyond the current value of approximately 1,000?cm2?V-1?s-1 (at low temperatures). Here we create a new type of two-dimensional electron gas at the heterointerface between SrTiO3 and a spinel ?-Al2O3 epitaxial film with compatible oxygen ions sublattices. Electron mobilities more than one order of magnitude higher than those of hitherto-investigated perovskite-type interfaces are obtained. The spinel/perovskite two-dimensional electron gas, where the two-dimensional conduction character is revealed by quantum magnetoresistance oscillations, is found to result from interface-stabilized oxygen vacancies confined within a layer of 0.9?nm in proximity to the interface. The combination of molecular field approximation, decorated–iteration transformation and the Monte Carlo simulation enabled us to discuss systematically the effect of inclusion of spin fluctuation and also showed a possibility to discuss the effect of spin fluctuation and that of concentration distribution separately. We demonstrate that images of flux vortices in a superconductor taken with a transmission electron microscope can be used to measure the penetration depth and coherence length in all directions at the same temperature and magnetic field. This is particularly useful for MgB2, where these quantities vary with the applied magnetic field and values are difficult to obtain at low field or in the c direction. We obtained images of flux vortices from a MgB2 single crystal cut in the ac plane by focused ion beam milling and tilted to 45° with respect to the electron beam about the crystallographic a axis. A new method was developed to simulate these images that accounted for vortices with a nonzero core in a thin, anisotropic superconductor and a simplex algorithm was used to make a quantitative comparison between the images and simulations to measure the penetration depths and coherence lengths. This gave penetration depths Λab=100±35 nm and Λc=120±15 nm at 10.8 K in a field of 4.8 mT. The large error in Λab is a consequence of tilting the sample about a and had it been tilted about c, the errors on Λab and Λc would be reversed. Thus obtaining the most precise values requires taking images of the flux lattice with the sample tilted in more than one direction. In a previous paper [J. C. Loudon et al., Phys. Rev. B 87, 144515 (2013)], we obtained a more precise value for Λab using a sample cut in the ab plane. Using this value gives Λab=107±8 nm, Λc=120±15 nm, ξab=39±11 nm, and ξc=35±10 nm, which agree well with measurements made using other techniques. The experiment required two days to conduct and does not require large-scale facilities. It was performed on a very small sample, 30×15 μm and 200-nm thick, so this method could prove useful for superconductors where only small single crystals are available, as is the case for some iron-based superconductors. We have used electron holography to investigate the local magnetic behavior of isolated ferromagnetic nanowires (NWs) in their remanent states. The NWs consisted of periodic magnetic layers of soft, high-saturation magnetization CoFeB alloys, and non-magnetic layers of Cu. All NWs were fabricated by pulsed-potential electrodeposition in nanoporous alumina membranes. The NW composition and layer thicknesses were measured using scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The magnetization of individual NWs depended upon the thicknesses of the layers and the direction of an external magnetic field, which had been applied in situ. When the CoFeB was thicker than the diameter (50 nm), magnetization was axial for all external field directions, while thinner layers could be randomized via a perpendicular field. In some cases, magnetization inside the wire was detected at an angle with respect to the axis of the wires. In thinner Cu/CoFeB (<10 nm each) multilayer, magnetic field vortices were detected, associated with opposing magnetization in neighbouring layers. The measured crystallinity, compositions, and layer thicknesses of individual NWs were found to be significantly different from those predicted from calibration growths based on uniform composition NWs. In particular, a significant fraction of Cu (up to 50 at. %) was present in the CoFeB layers such that the measured magnetic induction was lower than expected. We have investigated the interaction between Pd and Ce in a (0.47 wt %) CeOx–Pd(1 wt %)/α-Al2O3 catalyst that is used in the reforming reaction of CH4 with CO2. The freshly reduced catalyst was characterized by various electron microscopy techniques, such as elemental mapping, Z-contrast imaging, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy to understand the role of Ce on a microscopic scale. The high spatial resolution elemental mapping indicates that CeOx is located in close proximity of the palladium nanoparticles. High-resolution lattice images and energy-loss spectra obtained in the vicinity of the Pd particles show an anisotropic distribution of CeOx crystallites limited to the interface region between Pd and the substrate but not covering the surface of the Pd nanoparticles. Energy-loss near edge fine structure of Pd M edges reveals that the Pd nanoparticles are not oxidized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large area square arrays of circular cobalt dots, nominally 100 nm in diameter and 20 nm in thickness, were patterned using interference lithography. Magnetic remanent states were measured using off-axis electron holography in the transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results show that the dots are mostly single domain, although vortex states and multidomain configurations are occasionally observed. Significant magnetic interactions between adjacent dots result in variations in their magnetization direction away from the direction of the applied field. The suitability of such dots for data storage applications is discussed. Quantitative magnetic phase measurements were also obtained by applying the transport of intensity equation to images acquired using the Fresnel mode of Lorentz microscopy in the TEM. A new dopant incorporation mechanism in Ga-assisted GaAs nanowires grown by molecular beam epitaxy is reported. Off-axis electron holography revealed that p-type Be dopants introduced in situ during molecular beam epitaxy growth of the nanowires were distributed inhomogeneously in the nanowire cross-section, perpendicular to the growth direction. The active dopants showed a remarkable azimuthal distribution along the (111)B flat top of the nanowires, which is attributed to preferred incorporation along 3-fold symmetric truncated facets under the Ga droplet. A diffusion model is presented to explain the unique radial and azimuthal variation of the active dopants in the GaAs nanowires. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A sulfate-based electrolyte was used for synthesis of multilayer (ML) and monolithic Ni-Fe-Al 2 O 3 coatings. The ML electrodeposits were achieved by consecutive alteration of duty cycle of pulsed current between two values of 20% and 90%. The influences of the ML microstructure on mechanical properties and wear resistance of composite coatings were studied. The shear punch testing method was employed to evaluate the room temperature mechanical properties. It was shown that increasing the pulse frequency and decreasing the pulse duty cycle improved the mechanical properties of monolithic coatings. The electrodeposited ML coatings exhibited a pronounced improvement in microhardness, shear strength and wear resistance in comparison to the monolithic coatings. Pin-on-disk sliding wear tests revealed that the main mechanisms of wear are plastic deformation, fatigue crack of deformed layers and delamination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
