Purpose: To evaluate the repeatability of a new method of measurement of visual acuity by use of a psychometric function. Methods: The visual acuity of 15 healthy adults was measured by use of a psychometric function (PFVA) and by use of a conventional method using a decimal visual acuity chart (DeVA). We performed two tests. To evaluate intra-rater reliability, a tester measured the visual acuity three times for each subject, and the intraclass correlation coefficients, ICC (1,1), were calculated for PFVA and DeVA. Next, to evaluate inter-rater reliability, three testers measured the visual acuity for one subject, and the ICC (2,1) were calculated for PFVA and DeVA. The PFVA and DeVA of five subjects with ocular diseases were also measured. Results: In the evaluation of intra-rater reliability, the ICC (1,1) of the DeVA was 0.83 and the ICC (1,1) of the PFVA was 0.95. In the evaluation of inter-rater reliability, the ICC (2,1) of the DeVA was 0.88 and the ICC (2,1) of the PFVA was 0.93. In both tests the standard deviations of the PFVA were significantly lower than those of the DeVA. For four of the five subjects with ocular diseases, the PFVA was significantly improved by treatment. Cool road pavements contribute to mitigating urban heat islands. To evaluate the heat balance in paved surfaces and to select appropriate road construction materials that help suppress heat islands, an accurate understanding of heat transport parameters such as thermal conductivity (λ) and heat capacity (HC) is important. Recycled aggregates from construction and demolition waste, including scrap construction materials and industrial by-products, are often used for road construction; however, λ and HC of recycled aggregates especially for roadbeds are not fully understood. This study involved a series of laboratory tests to measure λ and HC of recycled concrete and clay brick aggregates (<40 mm) and their mixtures with autoclaved aerated concrete grains (<2 mm) under varied moisture conditions. The measured λ and HC increased with increasing volumetric water content (θ). Closed-form models for estimating λ(θ) were proposed using normalized thermal conductivity (λe) and effective saturation (Se). The new λe(Se) models performed well for the measured data compared to previously proposed models and would be useful to evaluate λ of recycled aggregates for roadbed materials. Growing plants in extraterrestrial environments, for example on a space station or in a future lunar or Martian outpost, is a challenge that has attracted increasing interest over the last few decades. Most of the essential plant needs for optimal growth (air, water, and nutrient supply, and mechanical support) are closely linked with the basic physical properties of the growth media. Diffusion is the main process whereby oxygen and nutrients are supplied to plant roots, and gas and solute diffusivity are the key parameters controlling the diffusive movement of oxygen and nutrients in the root zone. As one among several essential aspects of optimal porous media design for plant growth, this study presents a diffusion-based characterization of four commercial, aggregated growth media. To account for the observed large percolation threshold for gas diffusivity in the selected media, an inactive pore and density corrected (IPDC) model was developed and excellently described measured gas diffusivity in both inter- and intraaggregate pore regions. A strong relation (r² = 0.98) between percolation threshold for gas diffusivity and mean particle (aggregate) diameter was found and suggested to be used in future design models. Also, critical windows of diffusivity (CWD) was defined identifying the air content range where gas diffusivity (hence, oxygen supply) and solute diffusivity or the analogous electrical conductivity (hence, nutrient supply) are above pre-defined, critical minimum values. Assuming different critical values for gas diffusivity under terrestrial and Martian conditions, the four growth media were compared and it was found that one medium did not fulfill the pre-set criteria. Overall, the analyses suggested that particle (aggregate) sizes below 0.25 and above 5 mm should likely be avoided when designing safe plant growth media for space. The CWD concept was also applied to a natural volcanic ash soil (Nishi-Tokyo, Japan), and the natural soil was found competitive or better than the tested commercial growth media. This could bear large perspectives for Martian outpost missions, since NASA has found that Martian dust/soil mostly resembles volcanic ash soil among terrestrial materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Landfill sites are emerging in climate change scenarios as a significant source of greenhouse gases. The compacted final soil cover at landfill sites plays a vital role for the emission, fate and transport of landfill gases. This study investigated the effects of dry bulk density, ρb , and particle size fraction on the main soil–gas transport parameters – soil–gas diffusivity (Dp /Do , ratio of gas diffusion coefficients in soil and free air) and air permeability (ka ) – under variably-saturated moisture conditions. Soil samples were prepared by three different compaction methods (Standard and Modified Proctor compaction, and hand compaction) with resulting ρb values ranging from 1.40 to 2.10gcm−3. Results showed that Dp and ka values for the ‘+gravel’ fraction (<35mm) became larger than for the ‘−gravel’ fraction (<2mm) under variably-saturated conditions for a given soil–air content (ε), likely due to enhanced gas diffusion and advection through less tortuous, large-pore networks. The effect of dry bulk density on Dp and ka was most pronounced for the ‘+gravel’ fraction. Normalized ratios were introduced for all soil–gas parameters: (i) for gas diffusivity Dp /Df , the ratio of measured Dp to Dp in total porosity (f), (ii) for air permeability ka /ka ,pF4.1, the ratio of measured ka to ka at 1235kPa matric potential (=pF 4.1), and (iii) for soil–air content, the ratio of soil–air content (ε) to total porosity (f) (air saturation). Based on the normalized parameters, predictive power-law models for Dp (ε/f) and ka (ε/f) models were developed based on a single parameter (water blockage factor M for Dp and P for ka ). The water blockage factors, M and P, were found to be linearly correlated to ρb values, and the effects of dry bulk density on Dp and ka for both ‘+gravel’ and ‘−gravel’ fractions were well accounted for by the new models. Purpose: A three-dimensional (3D) image viewing experiment was performed using a new 3D scenography system. The influence on visual function was investigated both in adults and in children employing both objective and subjective methods. Methods: The subjects were 21 healthy adults (mean age ± standard deviation: 42.1 ± 10.0 years) and 21 healthy children (7.8 ± 1.5 years). The 3D image viewing time was set at 90 min for adults and 60 min for children, and the visual function was objectively evaluated using an accommodative microfluctuation analysis system both before and after 3D image viewing. In addition, subjective symptoms were surveyed employing a questionnaire both before and after viewing in the adult group to subjectively evaluate the visual function. Results: No significant difference was noted in accommodative microfluctuation between the before and after viewing in either the adult or child group, nor was there a significant difference in subjective symptoms in the adult group based on the questionnaire. However, accommodative microfluctuation tended to increase after viewing in some subjects. Conclusions: Under the conditions of this study, 3D image viewing did not influence visual function, or only very slightly influenced it, if at all, but there are many unknown problems, requiring further surveys using 3D image viewing. The article discusses a research study which investigated the role of Wnt antagonist DKK1 as a tumor suppressor gene in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The study found that the expression of DKK1 gene is genetically silenced in kidney cancer. The reexpression of DKK1 gene was found to induce apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in RCC.

Secreted frizzled-related protein-5 ( sFRP-5) has been identified as 1 of the secreted antagonists that bind Wnt protein. However, the functional significance of sFRP-5 in renal cell cancer (RCC) has not been reported. We hypothesized that sFRP-5 may be epigenetically downregulated through DNA methylation and histone modification and function as a tumor suppressor gene in RCC. Using tissue microarray and real-time RT-PCR, we found that sFRP-5 was significantly downregulated in kidney cancer tissues and cell lines, respectively. DNA bisulfite sequencing of the sFRP-5 promoter region in RCC cell lines showed it to be densely methylated, whereas there was few promoter methylation in normal kidney. The sFRP-5 expression was restored and the acetylation of H3 and H4 histones associated with the sFRP-5 promoter region were significantly increased after treatment with demethylation agent (5-Aza-dc) and histone deacetylase inhibitor (TSA). When RCC cells were transfected with the sFRP-5 gene, significant inhibition of anchorage independent colony formation and cell invasion were observed compared to controls. The sFRP-5 transfection also significantly induced apoptosis in RCC cells. In conclusion, this is the first report documenting that the sFRP-5 is downregulated by promoter methylation and histone acetylation and functions as a tumor suppressor gene by inducing apoptosis in RCC cells. The soil gas diffusion coefficient (Dp) and its dependency on soil air content, ϵ, and tortuosity-connectivity of the air-filled pore networks control the transport and fate of gaseous-phase contaminants in variably saturated soil. The bimodality pin ore size distribution of structured soil often yields a variation of Dp with ϵ in the intraagggre ate pore region that is distinctly different from that in the interaggregate region. Data imply a highly nonlinear behavior of soil gas diffusivity, Dp(ϵ)/D0 (where D0 is the gas diffusion coefficient in free air), in the interaggregate region of aggregated soils similar to that of structureless soils with a unimodal pore size distribution, probably due to diffusion-limiting effects by connected water films at low ϵ. In contrast, for the intraaggregate region, we show that the impedance factor F* (= Dp/ϵD0 ) and tortuosity factor T [= (1/F*)1/2] are approximately constant for most soil media. We suggest a typically well-defined separation between the two pore regions at the minimum for the pore connectivity factor X* [= log(Dp/D0)/log(ϵ)], at which point the interaggregate pores are devoid of water while the intraaggregate pore region is water saturated. Based on this, a hierarchical two independent region (TIR) Dp/D0 model was developed by applying a cumulative series of Buckingham-Currie power-law functions, FϵX. A nonlinear, water-content-dependent expression for F best described the measured Dp/D0 in the interaggregare region, while constant F (around 0.5) and X (around 1) generally sufficed for the intraaggregate region. The TIR model better predicted gas diffusivities for both aggregate fractions and highly structured soils across the entire range of moisture conditions with RMSE reduced by two to five times compared with traditional-predictive Dp(ϵ)/D0 models. Purpose: Diabetes mediates an increase in reactive oxygen species that can lead to impaired endothelial function, decreased smooth muscle in the diabetic corpus cavernosum and increased apoptosis. We hypothesized that antioxidant therapy may restore erectile function by inhibiting apoptosis in diabetic rat crura. Materials and Methods: A total of 40 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to 5 groups of 8 each, including healthy controls, rats with diabetes, and rats with diabetes with the antioxidant tempol (4-hydroxytetramethyl-piperidine-1-oxyl) (Sigma-Aldrich®), with insulin, and with tempol and insulin. Intracavernous pressure was measured for functional analysis. Smooth muscle and collagen fiber levels in the rat penile corpus cavernosum were assessed by hematoxylin and eosin, and Masson''s trichrome staining. Endothelial cells were assessed by CD31 staining. Reactive oxygen species related genes were analyzed by cDNA microarray. We confirmed mRNA and protein expression profiles for these genes in diabetic and treated rats using real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry. TUNEL assay was done to analyze apoptosis status. Results: Intracavernous pressure in diabetic rats was significantly decreased vs controls. After treatment with tempol or insulin alone intracavernous pressure was significantly increased compared to that in untreated diabetic rats. In the diabetic group mean smooth muscle area significantly decreased but was restored after combined tempol and insulin. Endothelial cell area in diabetic rats significantly decreased and was not restored by any treatments. However, apoptosis was restored to normal by combined insulin and tempol. Of 84 reactive oxidative stress and antioxidant genes 32 were identified specific to diabetic rats compared to healthy controls. UCP3 expression was significantly increased in diabetic rats and normal levels were restored by all treatments. Conclusions: To our knowledge this is the first report that tempol and insulin can restore erectile function in diabetic rats by inhibiting apoptosis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The transport of gaseous compounds in soil takes place by gas diffusion, advection, and dispersion. Gas transport processes arc influenced by the soil-gas diffusion coefficient (DH), air permeability (ka) and soil-gas dispersion coefficient (DH), respectively. Of three gas transport parameters, DH is the least understood, especially how it is correlated to soil type, moisture conditions, and other transport parameters (i.e., Dp and ka). In this study, a unified measurement system (UMS) that enables sequential measurement of Dp, ka, and DH on the same soil core was developed. The experimental sequence is based on a two-chamber measurement of DH and ka, followed by a one-chamber measurement of Dp. Gaseous oxygen concentration and air pressure sensors are located in inlet and outlet cham6ers as well as at multiple points along the soil column. Using different particle-size fractions of non-aggregated (Toyoura sand) and aggregated (Nishi-Tokyo loam) soils, the effects of soil structure, particle (aggregate) size, and column scale (5-cm i.d. and 30-cm or 60-cm length) on the three gas transport parameters were investigated. For both soils, DH linearly increased with increasing pore-air velocity. For Toyoura sand, gas dispersivity (λ = DH/u0) decreased with increasing soil-air content, while for Nishi-Tokyo loam, gas dispersiviry decreased with increasingsoil-air content to a minimum value when inter-aggregate pores were drained and increased again when the pores inside the soil aggregates started to act as tortuous air-filled pathways. In the arterial pore region (corresponding to the total pore volume for Narita sand and the inter-aggregate pore volume for Nishi-Tokyo loam), a linear relation between tortuosity of the air-filled pore network (T, calculated from Dp) and the gas dispersivity λ was observed. OBJECTIVE To determine the combined effects of nerve growth factor (NGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on regeneration of the bladder acellular matrix graft (BAMG) in spinal cord injury (SCI)-mediated neurogenic bladder in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS In all, 40 female Sprague-Dawley rats were used. At 8 weeks after spinalization surgery (neurogenic bladder), they were divided into five groups consisting of untreated controls and those whose bladders were injected with either no growth factor, NGF (2 µg/rat), VEGF (2 µg/rat) or both at partial BAMG replacement surgery. After 8 weeks, bladder function was assessed by urodynamic studies and the bladders were harvested for histological examination. Smooth muscle induction, collagen and nerve fibre regeneration were assessed immunohistochemically using antibodies to smooth muscle actin (α-actin), Masson’s trichrome and protein gene product 9.5, respectively. RESULTS Bladder capacity and compliance were significantly increased in all BAMG groups 8 weeks after surgery compared with that before bladder replacement surgery. Bladder capacity and compliance were much higher in the VEGF and NGF combined group than in the control, or NGF and VEGF alone groups. There was no significant difference in the residual volume ratio among all groups. CONCLUSIONS This is the first report showing that NGF has a significant synergistic effect on the development, differentiation and functional restoration of the BAMG when administered with VEGF in neurogenic bladder. Our results indicate that NGF may be a useful cytokine for enhancing the regeneration of a functional bladder following acellular matrix grafting in a neurogenic rat model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the applicability of industrial by-products such as steel slag (SS) and autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) grains (<0.105, 0.105–2, 2–4.75 mm) as low-cost adsorbents for simultaneous removal of Cd2+ and Pb2+ in wastewater. A series of batch adsorption experiments was carried out in single and binary-metal solutions of Cd2+ and Pb2+ by changing the mixing proportions of SS and AAC grains. In addition, the effect of the liquid-to-solid ratio (L/S) on the removal of Cd2+ and Pb2+ in multi-metal solution was examined. Results showed that SS grains had a high affinity with Cd2+ in the single solution, while AAC grains had an affinity with Pb2+. In the binary solution, the mixtures of SS and AAC grains removed both Cd2+ and Pb2+ well; especially, the tested adsorbents of SS+AAC [1:1] and SS+AAC [1:4] mixtures achieved approximately 100% removal of both metals. Based on the results in the multi-metal solutions, the metal removal % and selectivity sequence varied depending on the mixed proportions of SS and AAC grains and L/S values. It was found that the SS+AAC [1:1] mixture of SS and AAC grains showed 100% removals of Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+ simultaneously at L/S = 10 and 60. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study collected basic information and conducted waste composition surveys to identify the present management condition of construction and demolition waste (CDW) landfills in Hanoi of Vietnam and to characterize waste composition and grain size distribution of CDW dumped at landfills. Basic information on seven CDW landfills under operation or closed/abandoned was collected, and the waste composition and the grain size distributions of dumped CDW at two landfills were investigated. Results showed that only one landfill site is currently under operation in Hanoi. Sanitary conditions of investigated landfills were relatively good without dumping of hazardous waste. Illegal dumping of domestic waste from residents, however, could be observed more or less at all sites due to an unclear boundary between dumping and surrounding areas. To improve current management of CDW landfills, a suitable recording system of accepted/dumped CDW and technical support for site managers are required as well as the implementation plan for developing and renovating landfills. Based on the results of the waste composition survey, the major components of dumped CDW were "Concrete", "Clay bricks", and "Soil-like", and the sum of these materials reached >80% of the total. Grain size distributions of "Concrete" ranged from 10–600 mm and of "Clay bricks" ranged from 10–300 mm. Technical recommendations to examine a potential availability of dumped "Concrete" and "Clay bricks" as a base material in road construction are summarized from the viewpoints of segregation from "Soil-like" and impurities, grading of "Concrete" and "Clay bricks", mechanical properties and environmental safety, and economic feasibility. The findings in this study raise challenges and perspectives to establish sound CDW management and to promote sustainable development of CDW recycling in Vietnam. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
