Graphene-based nanodevices have been developed rapidly and are now considered a strong contender for postsilicon electronics. However, one challenge facing graphene-based transistors is opening a sizable bandgap in graphene. The largest bandgap achieved so far is several hundred meV in bilayer graphene, but this value is still far below the threshold for practical applications. Through in situ electrical measurements, we observed a semiconducting character in compressed trilayer graphene by tuning the interlayer interaction with pressure. The optical absorption measurements demonstrate that an intrinsic bandgap of 2.5 ± 0.3 eV could be achieved in such a semiconducting state, and once opened could be preserved to a few GPa. The realization of wide bandgap in compressed trilayer graphene offers opportunities in carbon-based electronic devices.

2D van der Waals (vdW) magnets have recently emerged as a promising material system for spintronic device innovations due to their intriguing phenomena in the reduced dimension and simple integration of magnetic heterostructures without the restriction of lattice matching. However, it is still challenging to realize Curie temperature far above room temperature and controllable magnetic anisotropy for spintronics application in 2D vdW magnetic materials. In this work, the pressure‐tuned dome‐like ferromagnetic‐paramagnetic phase diagram in an iron‐based 2D layered ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2 is reported. Continuously tunable magnetic anisotropy from out‐of‐plane to in‐plane direction is achieved via the application of pressure. Such behavior is attributed to the competition between intralayer and interlayer exchange interactions and enhanced DOS near the Fermi level. The study presents the prominent properties of pressure‐engineered 2D ferromagnetic materials, which can be used in the next‐generation spintronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lanthanide-doped nanoparticles are an emerging class of optical sensors, exhibiting sharp emission peaks, high signal-to-noise ratio, photostability, and a ratiometric color response to stress. The same centrosymmetric crystal field environment that allows for high mechanosensitivity in the cubic-phase (α), however, contributes to low upconversion quantum yield (UCQY). In this work, we engineer brighter mechanosensitive upconverters using a core-shell geometry. Sub-25 nm α-NaYF4:Yb,Er cores are shelled with an optically inert surface passivation layer of ∼4.5 nm thickness. Using different shell materials, including NaGdF4, NaYF4, and NaLuF4, we study how compressive to tensile strain influences the nanoparticles' imaging and sensing properties. All core-shell nanoparticles exhibit enhanced UCQY, up to 0.14% at 150 W/cm2, which rivals the efficiency of unshelled hexagonal-phase (β) nanoparticles. Additionally, strain at the core-shell interface can tune mechanosensitivity. In particular, the compressive Gd shell results in the largest color response from yellow-green to orange or, quantitatively, a change in the red to green ratio of 12.2 ± 1.2% per GPa. For all samples, the ratiometric readouts are consistent over three pressure cycles from ambient to 5 GPa. Therefore, heteroepitaxial shelling significantly improves signal brightness without compromising the core's mechano-sensing capabilities and further, promotes core-shell cubic-phase nanoparticles as upcoming in vivo and in situ optical sensors.

ABSTRACT Exopolysaccharide (EPS) of two benthic diatoms, Amphora sp. and Stauroneis sp., with different biofilm formation abilities were investigated. The ratio of suspension-cells/biofilm-cells was employed to indicate the diatom biofilm formation abilities. The soluble EPS from the supernatant of whole culture, tightly bound EPS from floating cells, loosely and tightly bound EPS from biofilm cells were fractionated as SL-EPS, F-TB-EPS, BF-LB-EPS and BF-TB-EPS, respectively. The analysis for productions and monosaccharide compositions indicated that EPS from two diatoms were different in terms of the productions, distributions, and monomer compositions. In this paper, we introduced a method to measure grain rotation of nanomaterials under external stress using a high pressure diamond anvil cell and the Laue microdiffraction technique at a synchrotron facility. We used tungsten carbide marker crystals to investigate grain rotation activities of 3 and 500 nm nickel media. Our results show that the grain rotation of 3 and 500 nm nickel nanocrystals increase with pressure and finally rotation of 500 nm nickel tends to stop at a lower pressure/stress level than 3 nm nickel. 3 nm nickel nanocrystals show a higher rotation magnitude than 500 nm nickel nanocrystals. Our measurements show an effective method to study the grain rotation of nanomaterials especially in ultrafine nanocrystals.

The conventional belief, based on the Read-Shockley model for the grain rotation mechanism, has been that smaller grains rotate more under stress due to the motion of grain boundary dislocations. However, in our high-pressure synchrotron Laue x-ray microdiffraction experiments, 70 nm nickel particles are found to rotate more than any other grain size. We infer that the reversal in the size dependence of the grain rotation arises from the crossover between the grain boundary dislocation-mediated and grain interior dislocation-mediated deformation mechanisms. The dislocation activities in the grain interiors are evidenced by the deformation texture of nickel nanocrystals. This new finding reshapes our view on the mechanism of grain rotation and helps us to better understand the plastic deformation of nanomaterials, particularly of the competing effects of grain boundary and grain interior dislocations.
