Supplementary Appendix reporting exploratory sensitivity analysis

Tamoxifen reduces breast cancer incidence in women at increased risk, but may cause side effects. We examined women's knowledge of tamoxifen's potential harms and benefits, and the extent to which knowledge reflects subjective judgments of awareness and decision quality. After a hospital appointment, 408 (55.7%) women at increased risk of breast cancer completed a survey assessing objective knowledge about the potential benefit (risk reduction) and harms (endometrial cancer, thromboembolic events, and menopausal side effects) of tamoxifen, and subjective tamoxifen knowledge and decisional quality. Two hundred fifty-eight (63.2%) completed a 3-month follow-up survey. Sixteen percent (15.7%) of participants recognized the potential benefit and three major harms of using tamoxifen. These women were more likely to have degree-level education [vs. below degree level; OR, 2.24; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.11–4.55] and good numeracy (vs. poor numeracy; OR, 5.91; 95% CI, 1.33–26.19). Tamoxifen uptake was higher in women who recognized all harms and benefits (vs. not recognizing; OR, 2.47; 95% CI, 0.94–6.54). Sixty-six percent (65.8%) of tamoxifen users were unaware of its potential benefit and harms. Most (87.1%) women reported feeling informed about tamoxifen, and subjective decisional quality was high [Mean (SD), 17.03 (1.87), out of 18]. Knowledge regarding the potential harms and benefit of tamoxifen is low in women considering prevention therapy, and they may need additional support to make informed decisions about tamoxifen preventive therapy.

It is well-established in the attention literature that eye-gaze and attention are dissociable. When viewing a face, some individuals tend to preferentially fixate on the eyes while others tend to fixate on the mouth. This preferential fixation of the mouth or eyes could lead to differences in using information from the mouth or eyes. Moreover, movements of the face during speech can convey information from the sub lexical to the sentential and prosodic. However individuals differ significantly in their ability to use this visual speech information. This project investigates how differences in covert attention (independent of gaze) influences audiovisual speech perception ability.

Abstract This chapter will examine how popular digital information resources, such as Wikipedia or Wikidata, impact the discoverability of digital repositories through a case study. It will consider how digital repository content can support web-based resources, and the impact that exposure on popular websites can have on digital content discoverability and usage. It will also provide information on how practitioners can successfully integrate their digital content with Wikipedia/Wikidata. It will explore the following questions: What does integrating content into Wikipedia look like? What benefits does a digital repository gain by integrating content into Wikipedia? How does this impact discoverability of digital items, or exposure to other digital collections in a repository? How do practitioners decide if integrating their content into Wikipedia is worthwhile? How do practitioners get involved in this process? What skills and knowledge do practitioners need to work on this process?

Research on bias in artificial intelligence has grown exponentially in recent years, especially around racial bias. Many modern technologies which impact people’s lives have been shown to have significant racial biases, including automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems. Emerging studies have found that widely-used ASR systems function much more poorly on the speech of Black people. Yet, this work is limited because it lacks a deeper consideration of the sociolinguistic literature on African American Language (AAL). In this paper, then, we seek to integrate AAL research into these endeavors to analyze ways in which ASRs might be biased against the linguistic features of AAL and how the use of biased ASRs could prove harmful to speakers of AAL. Specifically, we (1) provide an overview of the ways in which AAL has been discriminated against in the workforce and healthcare in the past, and (2) explore how introducing biased ASRs in these areas could perpetuate or even deepen linguistic discrimination. We conclude with a number of questions for reflection and future work, offering this document as a resource for cross-disciplinary collaboration.
