Abstract

Salvia leriifoliaBenth., Lamiaceae, an endemic medicinal plant of the northern region of Iran, has been documented as sedative. It has been used in traditional medicine for its muscle relaxation effect. The need for sedation and muscle relaxation are common problems which are usually treated with different synthetic drugs, which are associated with severe side effects. The aim of the current study was to investigate the muscle relaxation and sedative potency of compounds isolated from S. leriifolia. Open field and traction tests were employed to study the muscle relaxant and like effects of compounds 1and 2isolated from S. leriifoliain mice. Results revealed that each of these compounds (1and 2) caused a considerable decrease in mice mobility at test doses of 10, 15, and 20 mg/kg i.p.in a dose-dependent manner. When these compounds were tested in the traction test, they exhibited significant dose-dependent skeleton muscle relaxation effect during various assessment times. Thus, it is concluded that compounds 1and 2exert significant sedative and muscle relaxant-like effects and therefore can be candidates for further detailed biological studies. This study strongly justifies the ethnopharmacological uses of S. leriifoliaas sedative and muscle relaxant.

Abstract

Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a motor neuron disease (MND) that typically causes death within 3-5 years after diagnosis. Regardless of the substantial scientific knowledge accrued more than a century ago, truly effective therapeutic strategies remain distant. Various conventional drugs are being used but are having several adverse effects.Objective/Aim: The current study aims to thoroughly review plant-derived compounds with welldefined ALS activities and their structure-activity relationships. Moreover, the review also focuses on complex genetics, clinical trials, and the use of natural products that might decrypt the future and novel therapeutics in ALS.Methods: The collection of data for the compilation of this review work was searched in PubMed Scopus, Google Scholar, and Science Direct.Results: Results showed that phytochemicals like-Ginkgolides, Protopanaxatriol, Genistein, epigallocatechingallate, resveratrol, cassoside, and others possess Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) activity by various mechanismsConclusion: These plant-derived compounds may be considered as supplements for conventional (ALS). Moreover, further preclinical and clinical studies are required to understand the structureactivity relationships, metabolism, absorption, and mechanisms of plant-derived natural agents.

239. Crop production in northwestern Ethiopian highlands under changing climate.

Abstract

Climate change is the most serious threat to agricultural productivity. Ethiopia's agricultural sector is affected by climate change. The northern part of Ethiopia is among the drought prone and topographically diversified areas. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of climate change on crop yields, assess the pattern of rainfall maximum and lowest temperatures and assess the trajectory of selected crop yields. Historical weather station and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) power data were collected from 1981 to 2020. The Mann–Kendall (MK) trend test and Sen's slope (SS) method estimator were employed to estimate the trends and the direction of the trend. RClimDex package is used for climate extreme analysis. Nine rainfall and 11 temperature indices from a list of 27 extreme rainfall and temperature indices were used. The study found that the rainfall showed a significant decreasing and insignificant decreasing trend in Farta and Yilmana Densa districts, respectively. Maximum and minimum temperatures in both sites showed increasing trends. Rainfall happenings become more unanticipated, owing to the precipitation concentration index and anomaly trends. The majority of the indicators for extreme rainfall at both sites showed a downward trend. With the exception of the duration of cold spells, the annual lowest value of the daily minimum temperature, cold days and cold nights, the majority of the extreme temperature indices at both sites showed an increasing trend. The principal crop yields were connected with rainfall and temperature fluctuation, according to Pearson's product–moment correlation results, although the effects varied by crop and region. In summary, rising temperatures and decreasing precipitation may have a negative influence on agricultural activities, especially crop productivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
