Abstract

Mountain forest fire ash flushed into the eastern coastal waters of South Korea is known to contain cadmium as one of its significant constituents. To study its impact, two representatives of the micro- and macroalgal communities, Ulva pertusa and Nannochloropsis oculata , were exposed to the concentration range of Cd indicated from the forest fire localities. At low concentrations of 0.224–0.448 mg L −1 , a 20% reduction in growth rate of N. oculata was observed. Chlorophyll a pigment concentration was proportionate to the growth reduction while at higher concentrations (1.792 mg L −1 ) pigments were completely leached. In the macrophyte U. pertusa , a similar trend of pigment leaching was observed. Bioaccumulation factors obtained for these rapidly growing algal species revealed excessive bioconcentration of Cd. Variations in the concentration of Cd among the samples collected along the Korean coast clearly indicated the additional source of metal influx from the forest fires.

211. Predictive Markers of Tubo-Ovarian Abscess in Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.

Abstract

Background/Aims: The purpose of this study was to identify predictive markers for tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA) through a comparison of clinical and laboratory data in patients diagnosed with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Methods: We reviewed the medical charts of 499 females who were admitted to hospital with clinical, surgical, imaging-based diagnoses of PID between 2001 and 2011. The patients were divided into the following two groups: (1) PID with TOA and (2) PID without TOA. Results: The TOA and non-TOA groups were comprised of 69 and 430 females, respectively. Mean age, history of intrauterine device (IUD) insertion and inflammatory markers, including erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein (CRP) and CA-125 levels, were higher in the TOA group than the non-TOA group. Independent factors that predicted TOA were older age, IUD insertion, increased CRP and CA-125, and chlamydia infection. CA-125 was found to have the highest predictive value for TOA. TOA size was associated with increased surgical therapy compared to patients with smaller abscesses. Conclusions: Increased age, IUD insertion, chlamydia infection, and increased CRP and CA-125 level were the independent factors predictive of TOA in acute PID. These predictive values will be expected to help decrease gynecological morbidity by early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of TOA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

212. Association between genetic polymorphisms in folate-related enzyme genes and infertile men with non-obstructive azoospermia.

Abstract

Polymorphisms in the genes encoding enzymes in the folate metabolism pathway have been associated with male infertility and chromosome abnormalities. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), methionine synthase (MTR), and methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) polymorphisms in fertile men and infertile men with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA). A case-control study comprising 85 infertile men with NOA and 246 fertile men as controls was carried out.MTHFRc.677C > T (rs1801133),MTHFRc.1298A > C (rs1801131),MTRc.2756A > G (rs1805087), andMTRRc.66A > G (rs1801394) polymorphisms were determined using the polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism technique. There were significant differences in AC + CC genotype (OR = 1.9, 95% CI = 1.1–3.2) and C allele frequencies (OR = 1.8, 95% CI = 1.2–2.8) ofMTHFRc.1298A > C polymorphism between NOA patients and controls after applying the Bonferroni correction. Moreover, the 1298AC genotype, 1298AC + CC genotype, and 1298C allele frequencies were statistically significant in NOA with chromosomal abnormalities and/or a Y chromosome deletion compared to the controls (AC genotype: OR = 3.0; AC + CC genotype: OR = 3.0; C allele: OR = 2.3). Considering the other polymorphisms, no differences were found between cases and controls.
