This study aims to investigate the causal relationship between the Turkish stock market returns, namely XU100, and foreign exchange rates, namely USD/TRY and EUR/TRY, in Turkey using the wavelet coherence approach. In this study, we focus on the period from April 2000 to March 2019. Our findings reveal the following: (i) While we identify substantial volatility in the exchange rate during the 2000 November (banking crisis), 2001 February (economic crisis), and 2018 July (exchange rate crisis) periods, significant volatility was observed in the Turkish stock market during the 2000 banking crisis, 2001 economic crisis, and 2008 global crisis periods; (ii) There is a negative correlation between the Turkish stock market and foreign exchange rates at different frequencies over the selected sample period; (iii) A unidirectional causality runs from the Turkish stock market to foreign exchange rates between 2000 and 2004 at a scale of 4 months and between 2008 and 2012 at a scale of 32 months; (iv) Although inconsistent results are observed for the models of USD/TRY‐XU100 and EUR/TRY‐XU100, our empirical results show that the correlations between USD/TRY and XU100 are stronger than between EUR/TRY and XU100. Iceland aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040 and to cut carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 under the Paris Agreement. Iceland’s major policy instrument for reaching its emissions reduction and carbon neutrality objectives is a Climate Action Plan, which was amended in 2020 and included 48 initiatives. Therefore, the research investigates the impact of carbon intensity, economic growth, globalization, and energy productivity on consumption-based emissions in Iceland from 1995Q1 to 2019Q4. The Fourier Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (FARDL) is used in this study to investigate the ramifications of a long-term association. Long-run estimations demonstrate that Iceland’s environmental quality is deteriorating due to carbon intensity and economic development. It implies that increasing the carbon intensity and economic growth is environmentally damaging. Furthermore, economic expansion has a significant impact on environmental sustainability. Increased energy production also decreases consumption-based emissions, which contributes significantly to Iceland’s sustainable environment. Globalization has a positive and significant influence. A 1% rise in globalization, in particular, enhances consumption-based emissions over time. This article seeks to capture the effects of patents on environmental technologies and financial development on environmental degradation in Sweden between 1995Q1 and 2019Q4 using Fourier ARDL and Fourier Toda Yamamoto (Fourier TY) causality approaches. In the estimated models, the control variables employed are economic growth and renewable energy. The Fourier ARDL long-run estimates indicate that: (i) both patents on environmental technologies and renewable energy have negative effects on environmental degradation; (ii) improvements in both financial development and economic growth positively affect environmental degradation. Finally, the Fourier TY estimates indicate that patents on environmental technologies, growth, and renewable energy have unidirectional causal effects on environmental degradation. These findings have significant policy implications, particularly for financial development and patents on environmental technologies in Sweden. The government of Sweden can enact strict regulatory policies to control the adverse impacts of financial development. The present study unearths the causal effect of economic policy uncertainty (EPU), trade policies, and financial regulation on CO2 emissions in the United States. Based on this aim, the frequency domain causality and wavelet coherence tests are employed while answering the following questions: (i) Do EPU, trade policy, and financial regulation lead to CO2 emission in the United States, and (ii) if so, why? The findings from wavelet coherence reveal that changes in EPU, trade policies and financial regulation significantly lead to changes in CO2 emissions at different frequency levels, meaning that EPU, trade policies, and financial regulation are important predictors for the CO2 emission in the United States. The consistency of the findings from wavelet coherence is confirmed by the outcomes of frequency domain causality. To the best of our knowledge, until now, no study has explored the causal effect of economic policy uncertainty, trade policies, and financial regulation on the CO2 emission in the United States using single data set and wavelet coherence approach, which allows capturing both the long and short-run causality among the time series variables while combining time and frequency domain causality approaches. This study examines the time‐frequency causal link between economic policy uncertainty and inflation in Japan while answering the following questions: (i) is there any causal link between economic policy uncertainty and inflation in Japan? (ii) if yes, in which direction(s)? To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that conducts this nexus. To do so, this study employs the wavelet coherence causality test and focuses on the wide range period from 2003:03 to 2021:03, in which Japan was experienced the specific Quantitative and Qualitative Monetary Easing Policies. Overall, the findings mirror that economic policy uncertainty is an essential predictor of inflation in Japan, and economic policy uncertainty leads to inflation at different periods and frequencies. The results of this study are crucial for policy decision‐making, monetary authorities, and central banks, and Japan should reduce uncertainty about economic policies to curb the possible risk of inflation rises. The COVID-19 crisis has had deep adverse effects on a global level, affecting many economies and worsening their conditions which may have led to severe recession or even depression. The numbers of positive cases have risen sharply over the last few months, and the fatalities have also reached their peak. This study aims to examine the impact of the global financial crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic on the macroeconomic variables of the US economy. It also provides an understanding in a descriptive format, to analyze and compare the global financial crisis and COVID-19 pandemic, in a tabulated and graphical format. For analysis purposes, the tables and average method have been used. For the graphical formats, charts have been used for the later year of 2008, and the beginning of the 2009 global financial crisis. The first six months of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic have also been taken into consideration. The results have confirmed that the current COVID-19 pandemic shows more severity in terms of economic activity, than the global financial crisis had experienced. Moreover, the impact of the crisis on the recession probabilities in the current pandemic is lower than that at the time of the global financial crisis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Among the EU countries, Greece relies heavily on coal the most, and it has lagged behind in cutting emissions. Further, following the oil crisis of the 1970s, Greece has strategically invested in lignite. Solid fossil fuels such as lignite are classified as fossil fuels that are detrimental to environmental performance. This continued burning of fossil fuels has emerged as one of the most serious concerns in Greece, even globally. The aim is to capture the effect of energy productivity on carbon dioxide emissions (CO2E) in Greece while controlling trade openness, energy consumption, and economic growth. Toward this end, we employ a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model and other econometric robust techniques. The findings of the study are as follows: (i) trade openness positively impacts carbon emissions growth; (ii) economic growth adds to increased CO2E; (iii) expanding energy productivity is beneficial to the environment as it causes CO2E to decline; and (iv) increase in energy consumptions further results in CO2 cutbacks. The recommendation of our study suggests some innovative policies to counter the detrimental effects of carbon emissions by an increase in energy efficiency for the Greek economy. The study recommends that embracing a low-carbon, resource-efficient, and circular economy is of paramount importance to Greece in order to ensure environmental protection, as well as to boost green growth, create new jobs, and combat unemployment. Greece should ensure that energy efficiency techniques are promoted, and renewable energy sources are expanded in order to increase the options for cleaner alternatives and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, thus preserving the environment. The concept of environmental sustainability formed the basis of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations conference in Rio de Janeiro. Empirically, without environmental sustainability, everything else could fall apart or be aimless. This study investigates factors affecting global environmental sustainability spanning 1966Q1 to 2019Q4. However, there are many micro-/macroeconomic factors engendering the environment, and the absence of robust clarity on whether factors such as economic growth, urbanization, trade openness, and energy consumption matter for global environmental sustainability remains a global academic dilemma in the economics literature. This paper utilized the unrestricted nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) bounds test techniques to model their relationship. Furthermore, the study adopted fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS), dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS), and canonical cointegrating regression (CCR) methods to test the research hypothesis, catering to the problem of endogeneity and serial correlation. Up-to-date of this study, no empirical study has examined the nexus of these variables within the global framework. The outcomes suggested that (i) NARDL bounds test of cointegration confirmed evidence of long-run and short-run relationships among the variables; (ii) long-run asymmetric relationship was affirmed among the variables; and (iii) DOLS, FMOLS, and CCR models demonstrate that economic growth, energy consumption, and trade openness are positively significantly correlated with environmental sustainability except for economic growth which shows negative and insignificant correlation. These findings validate the protracted argument in literature that these estimated variables are significant for global environmental sustainability. This study recommends that environmental policymakers integrate global economic incentives with favorable regulatory changes for achieving the goals of a global sustainable environment in the long-run equilibrium. China is one of the largest emitters of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the world. Therefore, it is essential to explore the determinants of CO2 emissions in China. But previous studies so far have not examined how the political risk of this country can affect its CO2 emissions due to the lack of a long-term dataset. Hence, this study aims to capture the effect of political risk on China's CO2 emissions while controlling renewable energy consumption, technological innovation, and the economy's economic growth. We employ Bayer and Hanck cointegration, FMOLS, DOLS, CCR, and frequency domain causality tests to establish the relationship among the variables mentioned above. The outcome of the study reveals that political stability is an important predictor of environmental degradation in China. Moreover, political stability is helpful to lower CO2 emissions, while technological innovation and renewable energy consumption can reduce CO2 emissions, economic growth further deteriorates environmental quality by increasing its carbon emissions. Therefore, the present study recommends that policymakers in China should control political tension in the country to control CO2 emissions and, at the same time, promote technological innovation and renewable energy consumption. Climate change and environmental degradation have become the most complex and contentious global concerns in recent decades, despite growing worldwide accords demanding that these serious issues must be addressed urgently. Thus, we assessed the effect of technological innovation, economic growth, structural change, and nonrenewable energy use on CO 2 emissions in Turkey using a yearly dataset spanning between 1980 and 2019. The current paper utilized the ARDL bounds test, dynamic ARDL, and Breitung Candelon causality tests to assess these interrelationships. The outcomes of both the ARDL bounds and Bayer and Hanck cointegration tests affirmed evidence of cointegration among the variables. Furthermore, the outcomes of the dynamic ARDL disclosed that economic growth and nonrenewable energy use contribute to the degradation of the environment, while technological innovation stimulates the quality of the environment. Using the approach suggested by Itkonen (2012), the current paper does not confirm the EKC hypothesis. Lastly, the outcomes of the Breitung Candelon causality revealed a feedback causality association between nonrenewable and CO 2 emissions, while a unidirectional causality exists from technological innovation, economic growth, and structural change to CO 2 emissions. Based on the above findings, we propose that the government of Turkey should restructure its energy sector to address both carbon emissions and production losses by boosting the use of eco-friendly and efficient technologies in the process of production, while also shifting to a more services-based economy.
