The stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF) seems to be close to universal in the local star-forming regions. However, this quantity of a newborn stellar population responds differently at gas metallicities $Z \sim$ $Z_\odot$ than $Z$ = 0. A view on the cosmic star formation history suggests that the cooling agents in the gas vary both in their types and molecular abundances. For instance, in the primordial gas environment, the gas temperature can be higher by a factor of 30 as compared to the present day. Stellar radiation feedback and cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation may even contribute towards increasing the floor temperature of the star-forming gas which subsequently can leave profound impacts on the IMF. We present the contribution of the radiation sources towards the thermodynamical evolution of the Jeans unstable gas cloud which experiences fragmentation and mass accretion. We find evidence which suggests that the latter becomes the dominant process for star formation efficiencies (SFE) above 5 - 7 %, thus increasing the average mass of the stars. We focus on the isolated and binary stellar configurations emerging during the gas collapse. A long sought after goal using chemical abundance patterns derived from metal-poor stars is to understand the Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) and to pin down the nature of the first stars (Pop III). Here, we use a sample of 14 metal-poor stars observed with the high-resolution spectrograph PEPSI at the LBT to derive abundances of 32 elements (34 including limits). We present well-sampled abundance patterns for all stars obtained using local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) radiative transfer codes and 1D hydrostatic model atmospheres. It is currently well known that the assumptions of 1D and LTE may hide several issues, thereby introducing biases in our interpretation as to the nature of the first stars and the GCE. Hence, we use non-LTE (NLTE) and correct the abundances using 3D model atmospheres to present a physically more reliable pattern. In order to infer the nature of the first stars, we compare unevolved, cool stars, enriched by a single event (`mono-enriched'), with a set of yield predictions to pin down the mass and energy of the Pop III progenitor. To date, only few bona fide second generation mono-enriched stars are known. A simple x^2-fit may bias our inferred mass and energy just as much as the simple 1D LTE abundance pattern, and we thus carried out our study with an improved fitting technique considering dilution and mixing. Our sample presents Carbon Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars, some of which are promising true second generation (mono-enriched) stars. The unevolved, dwarf BD+09_2190 shows a mono-enriched signature which, combined with kinematical data, indicates that it moves in the outer halo and likely has been accreted onto the Milky Way early on. The Pop III progenitor was likely of 25.5M and 0.6 10^51erg (foe)/19.2M and 1.5foe in LTE/NLTE. The degree to which the formation and evolution of clouds and filaments in the interstellar medium is regulated by magnetic fields remains an open question. Yet the fundamental properties of the fields (strength and 3D morphology) are not readily observable. We investigate the potential for recovering magnetic field information from dust polarization, the Zeeman effect, and the Faraday rotation measure ($RM$) in a SILCC-Zoom magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) filament simulation. The object is analyzed at the onset of star formation, and it is characterized by a line-mass of about M/L $\sim 63\ M_{\odot}\ pc^{-1}$ out to a radius of $1\,$pc and a kinked 3D magnetic field morphology. We generate synthetic observations via POLARIS radiative transfer (RT) post-processing, and compare with an analytical model of helical or kinked field morphology to help interpreting the inferred observational signatures. We show that the tracer signals originate close to the filament spine. We find regions along the filament where the angular-dependency with the line-of-sight (LOS) is the dominant factor and dust polarization may trace the underlying kinked magnetic field morphology. We also find that reversals in the recovered magnetic field direction are not unambiguously associated to any particular morphology. Other physical parameters, such as density or temperature, are relevant and sometimes dominant compared to the magnetic field structure in modulating the observed signal. We demonstrate that the Zeeman effect and the $RM$ recover the line-of-sight magnetic field strength to within a factor 2.1 - 3.4. We conclude that the magnetic field morphology may not be unambiguously determined in low-mass systems by observations of dust polarization, Zeeman effect, or $RM$, whereas the field strengths can be reliably recovered., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, 3 tables

The spatial distribution of metals reflects, and can be used to constrain, the processes of chemical enrichment and mixing. Using PHANGS-MUSE optical integral field spectroscopy, we measure the gas phase oxygen abundances (metallicities) across 7,138 HII regions in a sample of eight nearby disc galaxies. In Paper I (Kreckel et al. 2019) we measure and report linear radial gradients in the metallicities of each galaxy, and qualitatively searched for azimuthal abundance variations. Here, we examine the two-dimensional variation in abundances once the radial gradient is subtracted, Delta(O/H), in order to quantify the homogeneity of the metal distribution and to measure the mixing scale over which HII region metallicities are correlated. We observe low (0.03--0.05 dex) scatter in Delta(O/H) globally in all galaxies, with significantly lower (0.02--0.03 dex) scatter on small (<600 pc) spatial scales. This is consistent with the measurement uncertainties, and implies the two-dimensional metallicity distribution is highly correlated on scales of <600 pc. We compute the two point correlation function for metals in the disc in order to quantify the scale lengths associated with the observed homogeneity. This mixing scale is observed to correlate better with the local gas velocity dispersion (of both cold and ionized gas) than with the star formation rate. Selecting only HII regions with enhanced abundances relative to a linear radial gradient, we do not observe increased homogeneity on small scales. This suggests that the observed homogeneity is driven by the mixing introducing material from large scales rather than by pollution from recent and on-going star formation., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures. Using the PHANGS-ALMA CO (2-1) survey, we characterize molecular gas properties on ${\sim}$100 pc scales across 102,778 independent sightlines in 70 nearby galaxies. This yields the best synthetic view of molecular gas properties on cloud scales across the local star-forming galaxy population obtained to date. Consistent with previous studies, we observe a wide range of molecular gas surface densities (3.4 dex), velocity dispersions (1.7 dex), and turbulent pressures (6.5 dex) across the galaxies in our sample. Under simplifying assumptions about sub-resolution gas structure, the inferred virial parameters suggest that the kinetic energy of the molecular gas typically exceeds its self-gravitational binding energy at ${\sim}$100 pc scales by a modest factor (1.3 on average). We find that the cloud-scale surface density, velocity dispersion, and turbulent pressure (1) increase towards the inner parts of galaxies, (2) are exceptionally high in the centers of barred galaxies (where the gas also appears less gravitationally bound), and (3) are moderately higher in spiral arms than in inter-arm regions. The galaxy-wide averages of these gas properties also correlate with the integrated stellar mass, star formation rate, and offset from the star-forming main sequence of the host galaxies. These correlations persist even when we exclude regions with extraordinary gas properties in galaxy centers, which contribute significantly to the inter-galaxy variations. The first stars in the Universe, the so-called Population III stars, form in small dark matter minihaloes with virial temperatures $T_{\rm vir} < 10^{4}$~K. Cooling in these minihaloes is dominated by molecular hydrogen (H$_{2}$), and so Population III star formation is only possible in those minihaloes that form enough H$_{2}$ to cool on a short timescale. As H$_{2}$ cooling is more effective in more massive minihaloes, there is therefore a critical halo mass scale $M_{\rm min}$ above which Population III star formation first becomes possible. Two important processes can alter this minimum mass scale: streaming of baryons relative to the dark matter and the photodissociation of H$_{2}$ by a high redshift Lyman-Werner (LW) background. In this paper, we present results from a set of high resolution cosmological simulations that examine the impact of these processes on $M_{\rm min}$ and on $M_{\rm ave}$ (the average minihalo mass for star formation), both individually and in combination. We show that streaming has a bigger impact on $M_{\rm min}$ than the LW background, but also that both effects are additive. We present the first complete, velocity-resolved [CII] 158um image of the M51 grand-design spiral galaxy, observed with the upGREAT instrument on SOFIA. [CII] is an important tracer of various phases of the interstellar medium (ISM), including ionized gas, neutral atomic, and diffuse molecular regions. We combine the [CII] data with HI, CO, 24um dust continuum, FUV, and near-infrared K-band observations to study the evolution of the ISM across M51's spiral arms in both position-position, and position-velocity space. Our data show strong velocity gradients in HI, 12CO, and [CII] at the locations of stellar arms (traced by K--band data) with a clear offset in position-velocity space between upstream molecular gas (traced by 12CO) and downstream star formation (traced by [CII]). We compare the observed position--velocity maps across spiral arms with synthetic observations from numerical simulations of galaxies with both dynamical and quasi-stationary steady spiral arms that predict both tangential and radial velocities at the location of spiral arms. We find that our observations, based on the observed velocity gradients and associated offset between CO and [CII], are consistent with the presence of shocks in spiral arms in the inner parts of M51 and in the arm connecting the companion galaxy, M51b, in the outer parts of M51., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Context: The Faraday rotation measure (RM) is often used to study the magnetic field strength and orientation within the ionized medium of the Milky Way. Observations indicate a RM in the spiral arms that exceeds the commonly assumed range. This raises the question of under what conditions spiral arms create such strong RM. Aims: We investigate the effect of spiral arms on Galactic RMs through shock compression of the interstellar medium (ISM). It has recently been suggested that the Sagittarius spiral arm creates a strong peak in RM where the line of sight (LOS) is tangent to the arm, and that enhanced RM follows along an intersecting LOS. We seek to understand the physical conditions that give rise to this effect and the role of viewing geometry. Methods: We apply a MHD simulation of the multi-phase ISM in a Milky Way type spiral galaxy disk in combination with radiative transfer to evaluate different tracers of spiral arm structures. For observers embedded in the disk, dust intensity, synchrotron emission and the kinematics of molecular gas observations are derived to identify spiral arm tangents. RMs are calculated through the disk and evaluated for different observer positions. The observer's perspective is related to the parameters of the local bubble surrounding the observer. Results: We reproduce a scattering of tangent points for different tracers of about $6^\circ$ per spiral arm similar to the Milky Way. As for the RM, the model shows that compression of the ISM and associated amplification of the magnetic field in spiral arms enhances RM by a few hundred rad $m^{-2}$ on top of the mean contribution of the disk. The arm-inter-arm contrast in RM along the LOS is approximately 10 in the inner Galaxy, fading to ~2 in the outer Galaxy. The nuclear stellar disc (NSD) is a flattened stellar structure that dominates the gravitational potential of the Milky Way at Galactocentric radii $30 \lesssim R \lesssim 300{\, \rm pc}$. In this paper, we construct axisymmetric Jeans dynamical models of the NSD based on previous photometric studies and we fit them to line-of-sight kinematic data of APOGEE and SiO maser stars. We find that (i) the NSD mass is lower but consistent with the mass independently determined from photometry by Launhardt et al. (2002). Our fiducial model has a mass contained within spherical radius $r=100{\, \rm pc}$ of $M(r<100{\, \rm pc}) = 3.9 \pm 1 \times 10^8 {\, \rm M_\odot}$ and a total mass of $M_{\rm NSD} = 6.9 \pm 2 \times 10^8 {\, \rm M_\odot}$. (ii) The NSD might be the first example of a vertically biased disc, i.e. with ratio between the vertical and radial velocity dispersion $\sigma_z/\sigma_R>1$. Observations and theoretical models of the star-forming molecular gas in the central molecular zone suggest that large vertical oscillations may be already imprinted at stellar birth. However, the finding $\sigma_z/\sigma_R > 1$ depends on a drop in the velocity dispersion in the innermost few tens of parsecs, on our assumption that the NSD is axisymmetric, and that the available (extinction corrected) stellar samples broadly trace the underlying light and mass distributions, all of which need to be established by future observations and/or modelling. To date no metal-free stars have been identified by direct observations. The most common method of constraining their properties is searching the spectra of the most metal-poor stars for the chemical elements created in the first stars and their supernova. In this approach, modelled supernova yields are compared to the observed abundance patterns in extremely metal-poor stars. The method typically only uses the abundance ratios, i.e., the yields are diluted to the observed level. Following the usual assumption of spherical symmetry we compute a simple lower limit of the mass a supernova can mix with and find that it is consistent with all published simulations of early chemical enrichment in the interstellar medium. For three different cases, we demonstrate that this dilution limit can change the conclusions from the abundance fitting. There is a large discrepancy between the dilution found in simulations of SN explosions in minihaloes and the dilution assumed in many abundance fits. Limiting the dilution can significantly alter the likelihood of which supernovae are possible progenitors of observed CEMP-no stars. In particular, some of the faint, very low-yield SNe, which have been suggested as models for the abundance pattern of SMSS0313-6708, cannot explain the measured metal abundances, as their predicted metal yields are too small by two orders of magnitude. Molecular clouds are a fundamental ingredient of galaxies: they are the channels that transform the diffuse gas into stars. The detailed process of how they do it is not completely understood. We review the current knowledge of molecular clouds and their substructure from scales $\sim~$1~kpc down to the filament and core scale. We first review the mechanisms of cloud formation from the warm diffuse interstellar medium down to the cold and dense molecular clouds, the process of molecule formation and the role of the thermal and gravitational instabilities. We also discuss the main physical mechanisms through which clouds gather their mass, and note that all of them may have a role at various stages of the process. In order to understand the dynamics of clouds we then give a critical review of the widely used virial theorem, and its relation to the measurable properties of molecular clouds. Since these properties are the tools we have for understanding the dynamical state of clouds, we critically analyse them. Star formation is a complex multi-scale phenomenon that is of significant importance for astrophysics in general. Stars and star formation are key pillars in observational astronomy from local star forming regions in the Milky Way up to high-redshift galaxies. From a theoretical perspective, star formation and feedback processes (radiation, winds, and supernovae) play a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of the physical processes at work, both individually and of their interactions. In this review we will give an overview of the main processes that are important for the understanding of star formation. We start with an observationally motivated view on star formation from a global perspective and outline the general paradigm of the life-cycle of molecular clouds, in which star formation is the key process to close the cycle. After that we focus on the thermal and chemical aspects in star forming regions, discuss turbulence and magnetic fields as well as gravitational forces. Star clusters form in dense, hierarchically collapsing gas clouds. Bulk kinetic energy is transformed to turbulence with stars forming from cores fed by filaments. In the most compact regions, stellar feedback is least effective in removing the gas and stars may form very efficiently. These are also the regions where, in high-mass clusters, ejecta from some kind of high-mass stars are effectively captured during the formation phase of some of the low mass stars and effectively channeled into the latter to form multiple populations. Star formation epochs in star clusters are generally set by gas flows that determine the abundance of gas in the cluster. We argue that there is likely only one star formation epoch after which clusters remain essentially clear of gas by cluster winds. Collisional dynamics is important in this phase leading to core collapse, expansion and eventual dispersion of every cluster. The Milky Way's central molecular zone (CMZ) has emerged in recent years as a unique laboratory for the study of star formation. Here we use the simulations presented in Tress et al. 2020 to investigate star formation in the CMZ. These simulations resolve the structure of the interstellar medium at sub-parsec resolution while also including the large-scale flow in which the CMZ is embedded. Our main findings are as follows. (1) While most of the star formation happens in the CMZ ring at $R\gtrsim100 {\, \rm pc}$, a significant amount also occurs closer to SgrA* at $R \lesssim 10{\, \rm pc}$. (2) Most of the star formation in the CMZ happens downstream of the apocentres, consistent with the "pearls-on-a-string" scenario, and in contrast to the notion that an absolute evolutionary timeline of star formation is triggered by pericentre passage. (3) Within the timescale of our simulations ($\sim100$ Myr), the depletion time of the CMZ is constant within a factor of $\sim2$. This suggests that variations in the star formation rate are primarily driven by variations in the mass of the CMZ, caused for example by AGN feedback or externally-induced changes in the bar-driven inflow rate, and not by variations in the depletion time. (4) We study the trajectories of newly born stars in our simulations. We find several examples that have age and 3D velocity compatible with those of the Arches and Quintuplet clusters. Our simulations suggest that these prominent clusters originated near the collision sites where the bar-driven inflow accretes onto the CMZ, at symmetrical locations with respect to the Galactic centre, and that they have already decoupled from the gas in which they were born., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We use hydrodynamical simulations to study the Milky Way's central molecular zone (CMZ). The simulations include a non-equilibrium chemical network, the gas self-gravity, star formation and supernova feedback. We resolve the structure of the interstellar medium at sub-parsec resolution while also capturing the interaction between the CMZ and the bar-driven large-scale flow out to $R\sim 5\kpc$. Our main findings are as follows: (1) The distinction between inner ($R\lesssim120$~pc) and outer ($120\lesssim R\lesssim450$~pc) CMZ that is sometimes proposed in the literature is unnecessary. Instead, the CMZ is best described as single structure, namely a star-forming ring with outer radius $R\simeq 200$~pc which includes the 1.3$^\circ$ complex and which is directly interacting with the dust lanes that mediate the bar-driven inflow. (2) This accretion can induce a significant tilt of the CMZ out of the plane. A tilted CMZ might provide an alternative explanation to the $\infty$-shaped structure identified in Herschel data by Molinari et al. 2011. (3) The bar in our simulation efficiently drives an inflow from the Galactic disc ($R\simeq 3$~kpc) down to the CMZ ($R\simeq200$~pc) of the order of $1\rm\,M_\odot\,yr^{-1}$, consistent with observational determinations. (4) Supernova feedback can drive an inflow from the CMZ inwards towards the circumnuclear disc of the order of $\sim0.03\,\rm M_\odot\,yr^{-1}$. (5) We give a new interpretation for the 3D placement of the 20 and 50 km s$^{-1}$ clouds, according to which they are close ($R\lesssim30$~pc) to the Galactic centre, but are also connected to the larger-scale streams at $R\gtrsim100$~pc., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Understanding the formation of stellar clusters requires following the interplay between gas and newly formed stars accurately. We therefore couple the magnetohydrodynamics code FLASH to the N-body code ph4 and the stellar evolution code SeBa using the Astrophysical Multipurpose Software Environment (AMUSE) to model stellar dynamics, evolution, and collisional N-body dynamics and the formation of binary and higher-order multiple systems, while implementing stellar feedback in the form of radiation, stellar winds and supernovae in FLASH. We here describe the algorithms used for each of these processes. We denote this integrated package Torch. We then use this novel numerical method to simulate the formation and early evolution of several examples of open clusters of ~1000 stars formed from clouds with a mass range of 10^3-10^5 M_sun. Analyzing the effects of stellar feedback on the gas and stars of the natal clusters, we find that in these examples, the stellar clusters are resilient to disruption, even in the presence of intense feedback. This can even slightly increase the amount of dense, Jeans unstable gas by sweeping up shells; thus, a stellar wind strong enough to trap its own H II region shows modest triggering of star formation. Our clusters are born moderately mass segregated, an effect enhanced by feedback, and retained after the ejection of their natal gas, in agreement with observations., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. 29 pages, 18 figures. We review the current status of knowledge concerning the early phases of star formation during cosmic dawn. This includes the first generations of stars forming in the lowest mass dark matter halos in which cooling and condensation of gas with primordial composition is possible at very high redshift ($z > 20$), namely metal-free Population III stars, and the first generation of massive black holes forming at such early epochs, the so-called black hole seeds. The formation of black hole seeds as end states of the collapse of Population III stars, or via direct collapse scenarios, is discussed. In particular, special emphasis is given to the physics of supermassive stars as potential precursors of direct collapse black holes, in light of recent results of stellar evolution models, and of numerical simulations of the early stages of galaxy formation. Furthermore, we discuss the role of the cosmic radiation produced by the early generation of stars and black holes at high redshift in the process of reionization.

While the stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF) appears to be close to universal within the Milky Way galaxy, it is strongly suspected to be different in the primordial Universe, where molecular hydrogen cooling is less efficient and the gas temperature can be higher by a factor of 30. In between these extreme cases, the gas temperature varies depending on the environment, metallicity and radiation background. In this paper we explore if changes of the gas temperature affect the IMF of the stars considering fragmentation and accretion. The fragmentation behavior depends mostly on the Jeans mass at the turning point in the equation of state where a transition occurs from an approximately isothermal to an adiabatic regime due to dust opacities. The Jeans mass at this transition in the equation of state is always very similar, independent of the initial temperature, and therefore the initial mass of the fragments is very similar. Accretion on the other hand is strongly temperature dependent. Context. Planck observations demonstrated that the grain alignment efficiency is almost constant in the diffuse ISM. Aims. We test if the Radiative Torque (RAT) theory is compatible with observational constraints on grain alignment. Methods. We combine a numerical simulation with the radiative transfer code POLARIS that incorporates a physical dust model and the detailed grain alignment physics of RATs. A dust model is designed to reproduce the spectral dependence of extinction of the ISM. From a RAMSES simulation of interstellar turbulence, we extract a cube representative of the diffuse ISM. We post-process the cube with POLARIS to get the grain temperature and RATs to simulate synthetic dust polarization maps. Results. In our simulation the grain alignment efficiency is correlated with gas pressure, but not with the RAT intensity. Because of the low dust extinction, the magnitude of RATs varies little, decreasing only for high column densities $N_H$. Comparing our maps with a uniform alignment efficiency, we find no systematic difference. The dependence of polarization fraction $p$ with $N_H$ or polarization dispersion $S$ is similar. The drop of RATs in dense regions barely affects the polarization pattern, the signal being dominated by the LOS and magnetic field geometry. If a star is inserted, the polarization increases, with no specific pattern around the star. The angle-dependence of RATs is not observed in the maps, and is weak using a uniform magnetic field. Conclusions. RATs are compatible with Planck data for the diffuse ISM such that both uniform alignment and RAT alignment lead to similar observations. To further test the predictions of RATs where an important drop of grain alignment is expected, polarization observations of dense regions must be confronted to numerical simulations sampling high column densities through dense clouds, with enough statistics., Comment: 22 pages, 22 figures

We use the moving-mesh code AREPO to investigate the effects of different levels of rotation and turbulence on the fragmentation of primordial gas and the formation of Population III stars. We consider 9 different combinations of turbulence and rotation and carry out 5 different realizations of each setup, yielding one of the largest sets of simulations of Population III star formation ever performed. We find that fragmentation in Population III star-forming systems is a highly chaotic process and show that the outcomes of individual realizations of the same initial conditions often vary significantly. However, some general trends are apparent. Increasing the turbulent energy promotes fragmentation, while increasing the rotational energy inhibits fragmentation. Within the 1000 yr period that we simulate, runs including turbulence yield flat protostellar mass functions while purely rotational runs show a more top-heavy distribution. The masses of the individual protostars are distributed over a wide range from a few $10^{-3} \, {\rm M_{\odot}}$ to several tens of ${\rm M_\odot}$. The total mass growth rate of the stellar systems remains high throughout the simulations and depends only weakly on the degree of rotation and turbulence. Mergers between protostars are common, but predictions of the merger fraction are highly sensitive to the criterion used to decide whether two protostars should merge. Previous studies of Population III star formation have often considered only one realization per set of initial conditions. We introduce a new suite of simulations, "The Cloud Factory", which self-consistently forms molecular cloud complexes at high enough resolution to resolve internal substructure (up to 0.25 Msol in mass) all while including galactic-scale forces. We use a version of the Arepo code modified to include a detailed treatment of the physics of the cold molecular ISM, and an analytical galactic gravitational potential for computational efficiency. The simulations have nested levels of resolution, with the lowest layer tied to tracer particles injected into individual cloud complexes. These tracer refinement regions are embedded in the larger simulation so continue to experience forces from outside the cloud. This allows the simulations to act as a laboratory for testing the effect of galactic environment on star formation. Here we introduce our method and investigate the effect of galactic environment on filamentary clouds. We find that cloud complexes formed after a clustered burst of feedback, have shorter lengths and are less likely to fragment compared to quiescent clouds (e.g. the Musca filament) or those dominated by the galactic potential (e.g. Nessie). Spiral arms and differential rotation preferentially align filaments, but strong feedback randomises them. Long filaments formed within the cloud complexes are necessarily coherent with low internal velocity gradients, which has implications for the formation of filamentary star-clusters. Cloud complexes formed in regions dominated by supernova feedback have fewer star-forming cores, and these are more widely distributed. We present here the first of a series of papers aimed at better understanding the evolution and properties of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in a galactic context. We perform high resolution, three-dimensional {\sc arepo} simulations of an interacting galaxy inspired by the well-observed M51 galaxy. Our fiducial simulations include a non-equilibrium, time-dependent, chemical network that follows the evolution of atomic and molecular hydrogen as well as carbon and oxygen self-consistently. Our calculations also treat gas self-gravity and subsequent star formation (described by sink particles), and coupled supernova feedback. In the densest parts of the simulated interstellar medium (ISM) we reach sub-parsec resolution, granting us the ability to resolve individual GMCs and their formation and destruction self-consistently throughout the galaxy. In this initial work we focus on the general properties of the ISM with a particular focus on the cold star-forming gas. We discuss the role of the interaction with the companion galaxy in generating cold molecular gas and controlling stellar birth. We find that while the interaction drives large-scale gas flows and induces spiral arms in the galaxy, it is of secondary importance in determining gas fractions in the different ISM phases and the overall star-formation rate. The behaviour of the gas on small GMC scales instead is mostly controlled by the self-regulating property of the ISM driven by coupled feedback.

We present the {\sc warpfield} emission predictor, {\sc warpfield-emp}, which couples the 1D stellar feedback code {\sc warpfield} with the {\sc cloudy} \hii region/PDR code and the {\sc polaris} radiative transfer code, in order to make detailed predictions for the time-dependent line and continuum emission arising from the H{\sc ii} region and PDR surrounding an evolving star cluster. {\sc warpfield-emp} accounts for a wide range of physical processes (stellar winds, supernovae, radiation pressure, gravity, thermal conduction, radiative cooling, dust extinction etc.) and yet runs quickly enough to allow us to explore broad ranges of different cloud parameters. We compare the results of an extensive set of models with SITELLE observations of a large sample of \hii regions in NGC~628 and find very good agreement, particularly for the highest signal-to-noise observations. We show that our approach of modeling individual clouds from first principles (instead of in terms of dimensionless quantities such as the ionization parameter) allows us to avoid long-standing degeneracies in the interpretation of \hii region diagnostics and enables us to relate these diagnostics to important physical parameters such as cloud mass or cluster age. Finally, we explore the implications of our models regarding the reliability of simple metallicity diagnostics, the properties of long-lived embedded clusters, and the role played by winds and supernovae in regulating \hii region and PDR line emission., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, submitted to MNRAS 18.09.2019

We have investigated the formation and kinematics of sub-mm continuum cores in the Orion A molecular cloud. A comparison between sub-mm continuum and near infrared extinction shows a continuum core detection threshold of $A_V\sim$ 5-10 mag. The threshold is similar to the star formation extinction threshold of $A_V\sim$ 7 mag proposed by recent work, suggesting a universal star formation extinction threshold among clouds within 500 pc to the Sun. A comparison between the Orion A cloud and a massive infrared dark cloud G28.37+0.07 indicates that Orion A produces more dense gas within the extinction range 15 mag $\lesssim A_V \lesssim$ 60 mag. Using data from the CARMA-NRO Orion Survey, we find that dense cores in the integral-shaped filament (ISF) show sub-sonic core-to-envelope velocity dispersion that is significantly less than the local envelope line dispersion, similar to what has been found in nearby clouds. Dynamical analysis indicates that the cores are bound to the ISF. An oscillatory core-to-envelope motion is detected along the ISF. We present a new approach to extract the power-law part of a density/column-density probability density function (rho-pdf/N-pdf) in star-forming clouds. It is based on the mathematical method bPLFIT of Virkar & Clauset (2014) and assesses the power-law part of an arbitrary distribution, without any assumptions about the other part of this distribution. The slope and deviation point are derived as averaged values as the number of bins is varied. Neither parameter is sensitive to spikes and other local features of the tail. This adapted bPLFIT method is applied to two different sets of data from numerical simulations of star-forming clouds at scales 0.5 and 500 pc and displays rho-pdf and N-pdf evolution in agreement with a number of numerical and theoretical studies. Applied to Herschel data on the regions Aquila and Rosette, the method extracts pronounced power-law tails, consistent with those seen in simulations of evolved clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 15 pages, 13 figures

We present an updated version of POLARIS, a well established code designated for dust polarisation and line radiative transfer (RT) in arbitrary astrophysical environments. We extend the already available capabilities with a synchrotron feature for polarised emission. Here, we combine state-of-the-art solutions of the synchrotron RT coefficients with numerical methods for solving the complete system of equations of the RT problem, including Faraday rotation (FR) as well as Faraday conversion (FC). We validate the code against Galactic and extragalactic observations by performing a statistical analysis of synthetic all-sky synchrotron maps for positions within the galaxy and for extragalactic observations. For these test scenarios we apply a model of the Milky Way based on sophisticated magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations and population-synthesis post-processing techniques.We explore different parameters for modeling the distribution of free electrons and for a turbulent magnetic field component. We find that a strongly fluctuating field is necessary for simulating synthetic synchrotron observations on small scales, we argue that Faraday rotation alone can account for the depolarisation of the synchrotron signal, and we discuss the importance of the observer position within the Milky Way. Altogether, we conclude that POLARIS is a highly reliable tool for predicting synchrotron emission and polarisation, including Faraday rotation in a realistic galactic context. Supersonic turbulence is a key player in controlling the structure and star formation potential of molecular clouds (MCs). The three-dimensional (3D) turbulent Mach number, $\mathcal{M}$, allows us to predict the rate of star formation. However, determining Mach numbers in observations is challenging because it requires accurate measurements of the velocity dispersion. Moreover, observations are limited to two-dimensional (2D) projections of the MCs and velocity information can usually only be obtained for the line-of-sight component. Here we present a new method that allows us to estimate $\mathcal{M}$ from the 2D column density, $\Sigma$, by analysing the fractal dimension, $\mathcal{D}$. We do this by computing $\mathcal{D}$ for six simulations, ranging between $1$ and $100$ in $\mathcal{M}$. From this data we are able to construct an empirical relation, $\log\mathcal{M}(\mathcal{D}) = \xi_1(\text{erfc}^{-1} [(\mathcal{D}-\mathcal{D}_{\text{min}})/\Omega] + \xi_2),$ where $\text{erfc}^{-1}$ is the inverse complimentary error function, $\mathcal{D}_{\text{min}} = 1.55 \pm 0.13$ is the minimum fractal dimension of $\Sigma$, $\Omega = 0.22 \pm 0.07$, $\xi_1 = 0.9 \pm 0.1$ and $\xi_2 = 0.2 \pm 0.2$. We test the accuracy of this new relation on column density maps from $Herschel$ observations of two quiescent subregions in the Polaris Flare MC, `saxophone' and `quiet'. We measure $\mathcal{M} \sim 10$ and $\mathcal{M} \sim 2$ for the subregions, respectively, which is similar to previous estimates based on measuring the velocity dispersion from molecular line data. Observations of molecular gas near the Galactic centre ($| l | < 10^\circ$, $| b | < 1^\circ$) reveal the presence of a distinct population of enigmatic compact clouds which are characterised by extreme velocity dispersions ($\Delta v > 100\, \rm km/s$). These Extended Velocity Features (EVFs) are very prominent in the datacubes and dominate the kinematics of molecular gas just outside the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). The prototypical example of such a cloud is Bania Clump 2. We show that similar features are naturally produced in simulations of gas flow in a realistic barred potential. We analyse the structure of the features obtained in the simulations and use this to interpret the observations. We find that the features arise from collisions between material that has been infalling rapidly along the dust lanes of the Milky Way bar and material that belongs to one of the following two categories: (i) material that has `overshot' after falling down the dust lanes on the opposite side; (ii) material which is part of the CMZ. Both types of collisions involve gas with large differences in the line-of-sight velocities, which is what produces the observed extreme velocity dispersions. Examples of both categories can be identified in the observations. If our interpretation is correct, we are directly witnessing (a) collisions of clouds with relative speeds of $\sim 200\, \rm km/s$ and (b) the process of accretion of fresh gas onto the CMZ., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. Models of the decoupling of baryons and photons during the recombination epoch predict the existence of a large-scale velocity offset between baryons and dark matter at later times, the so-called streaming velocity. In this paper, we use high resolution numerical simulations to investigate the impact of this streaming velocity on the spin and shape distributions of high-redshift minihalos, the formation sites of the earliest generation of stars. We find that the presence of a streaming velocity has a negligible effect on the spin and shape of the dark matter component of the minihalos. However, it strongly affects the behaviour of the gas component. The most probable spin parameter increases from $\sim$0.03 in the absence of streaming to $\sim$0.15 for a run with a streaming velocity of three times $\sigma_{\rm rms}$, corresponding to 1.4 km\,s$^{-1}{}$ at redshift $z=15$. The gas within the minihalos becomes increasingly less spherical and more oblate as the streaming velocity increases, with dense clumps being found at larger distances from the halo centre. The impact of the streaming velocity is also mass-dependent: less massive objects are influenced more strongly, on account of their shallower potential wells. The number of halos in which gas cooling and runaway gravitational collapse occurs decreases substantially as the streaming velocity increases. However, the spin and shape distributions of gas that does manage to cool and collapse are insensitive to the value of the streaming velocity and we therefore do not expect the properties of the stars that formed from this collapsed gas to depend on the value of the streaming velocity. We present a comparative study of the size-line width relation for substructures within six molecular clouds in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) mapped with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Our sample extends our previous study, which compared a Planck detected cold cloud in the outskirts of the LMC with the 30 Doradus molecular cloud and found the typical line width for 1 pc radius structures to be 5 times larger in 30 Doradus. By observing clouds with intermediate levels of star formation activity, we find evidence that line width at a given size increases with increasing local and cloud-scale 8${\mu}$m intensity. At the same time, line width at a given size appears to independently correlate with measures of mass surface density. Our results suggest that both virial-like motions due to gravity and local energy injection by star formation feedback play important roles in determining intracloud dynamics., Comment: 20 pages, to appear in ApJ. Observations of interstellar gas clouds are typically limited to two-dimensional (2D) projections of the intrinsically three-dimensional (3D) structure of the clouds. In this study, we present a novel method for relating the 2D projected fractal dimension ($\mathcal{D}_{\text{p}}$) to the 3D fractal dimension ($\mathcal{D}_{\text{3D}}$) of turbulent clouds. We do this by computing the fractal dimension of clouds over two orders of magnitude in turbulent Mach number $(\mathcal{M} = 1-100)$, corresponding to seven orders of magnitude in spatial scales within the clouds. This provides us with the data to create a new empirical relation between $\mathcal{D}_{\text{p}}$ and $\mathcal{D}_{\text{3D}}$. The proposed relation is $\mathcal{D}_{\text{3D}}(\mathcal{D}_{\text{p}}) = \Omega_1 erfc ( \xi_1 erfc^{-1}[ (\mathcal{D}_{\text{p}} - \mathcal{D}_{\text{p,min}})/\Omega_2 ] + \xi_2 ) + \mathcal{D}_{\text{3D,min}}$, where the minimum 3D fractal dimension, $\mathcal{D}_{\text{3D,min}} = 2.06 \pm 0.35$, the minimum projected fractal dimension, $\mathcal{D}_{\text{p,min}} = 1.55 \pm 0.13$, $\Omega_1 = 0.47 \pm 0.18$, $\Omega_2 = 0.22 \pm 0.07$, $\xi_1 = 0.80 \pm 0.18$ and $\xi_2 = 0.26 \pm 0.19$. The minimum 3D fractal dimension, $\mathcal{D}_{\text{3D,min}} = 2.06 \pm 0.35$, indicates that in the high $\mathcal{M}$ limit the 3D clouds are dominated by planar shocks. The relation between $\mathcal{D}_{\text{p}}$ and $\mathcal{D}_{\text{3D}}$ of molecular clouds may be a useful tool for those who are seeking to understand the 3D structures of molecular clouds, purely based upon 2D projected data and shows promise for relating the physics of the turbulent clouds to the fractal dimension., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. There is a longstanding discussion about whether low mass stars can form from pristine gas in the early Universe. A particular point of interest is whether we can find surviving pristine stars from the first generation in our local neighbourhood. We present here a simple analytical estimate that puts tighter constraints on the existence of such stars. In the conventional picture, should these stars have formed in significant numbers and have preserved their pristine chemical composition until today, we should have found them already. We describe a star cluster formation model that includes individual star formation from self-gravitating, magnetized gas, coupled to collisional stellar dynamics. The model uses the Astrophysical Multi-purpose Software Environment (AMUSE) to integrate an adaptive-mesh magnetohydrodynamics code (FLASH) with a fourth order Hermite N-body code (ph4), a stellar evolution code (SeBa), and a method for resolving binary evolution (multiples). This combination yields unique star formation simulations that allow us to study binaries formed dynamically from interactions with both other stars and dense, magnetized gas subject to stellar feedback during the birth and early evolution of stellar clusters. We find that for massive stars, our simulations are consistent with the observed dynamical binary fractions and mass ratios. However, our binary fraction drops well below observed values for lower mass stars, presumably due to unincluded binary formation during initial star formation. Further, we observe a build up of binaries near the hard-soft boundary that may be an important mechanism driving early cluster contraction., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures. Submitted to ApJ

How, when and where the first stars formed are fundamental questions regarding the epoch of Cosmic Dawn. A second order effect in the fluid equations was recently found to make a significant contribution: an offset velocity between gas and dark matter, the so-called streaming velocity. Previous simulations of a limited number of low-mass dark matter haloes suggest that this streaming velocity can delay the formation of the first stars and decrease halo gas fractions and the halo mass function in the low mass regime. However, a systematic exploration of its effects in a large sample of haloes has been lacking until now. In this paper, we present results from a set of cosmological simulations of regions of the Universe with different streaming velocities performed with the moving mesh code AREPO. Our simulations have very high mass resolution, enabling us to accurately resolve minihaloes as small as $10^5 \: {\rm M_{\odot}}$. We show that in the absence of streaming, the least massive halo that contains cold gas has a mass $M_{\rm halo, min} = 5 \times 10^{5} \: {\rm M_{\odot}}$, but that cooling only becomes efficient in a majority of haloes for halo masses greater than $M_{\rm halo,50\%} = 1.6 \times 10^6 \: {\rm M_{\odot}}$. In regions with non-zero streaming velocities, $M_{\rm halo, min}$ and $M_{\rm halo,50\%}$ both increase significantly, by around a factor of a few for each one sigma increase in the value of the local streaming velocity. As a result, in regions with streaming velocities $v_\mathrm{stream} \ge 3\,\sigma_\mathrm{rms}$, cooling of gas in minihaloes is completely suppressed, implying that the first stars in these regions form within atomic cooling haloes., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures, resubmitted to MNRAS

We present a [CII] 158um map of the entire M51 (including M51b) grand--design spiral galaxy observed with the FIFI-LS instrument on SOFIA. We compare the [CII] emission with the total far--infrared (TIR) intensity and star formation rate(SFR) surface density maps (derived using H_alpha and 24um emission) to study the relationship between [CII] and the star formation activity in a variety of environments within M51 on scales of 16" corresponding to ~660 pc. We find that [CII] and the SFR surface density are well correlated in the central, spiral arm, and inter-arm regions. The correlation is in good agreement with that found for a larger sample of nearby galaxies at kpc scales. We find that the SFR, and [CII] and TIR luminosities in M51 are dominated by the extended emission in M51's disk. The companion galaxy M51b, however, shows a deficit of [CII] emission compared with the TIR emission and SFR surface density, with [CII] emission detected only in the S-W part of this galaxy. The [CII] deficit is associated with an enhanced dust temperature in this galaxy. We interpret the faint [CII] emission in M51b to be a result of suppressed star formation in this galaxy, while the bright mid- and far-infrared emission, which drive the TIR and SFR values, are powered by other mechanisms. A similar but less pronounced effect is seen at the location of the black hole in M51's center. The observed [CII] deficit in M51b suggests that this galaxy is a valuable laboratory to study the origin of the apparent [CII] deficit observed in ultra-luminous galaxies., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in Apj Letters

In recent years, the discovery of massive quasars at z~7 has provided a striking challenge to our understanding of the origin and growth of supermassive black holes in the early Universe. Mounting observational and theoretical evidence indicates the viability of massive seeds, formed by the collapse of supermassive stars, as a progenitor model for such early, massive accreting black holes. Although considerable progress has been made in our theoretical understanding, many questions remain regarding how (and how often) such objects may form, how they live and die, and how next generation observatories may yield new insight into the origin of these primordial titans. Star formation is an inefficient process and in general only a small fraction of the gas in a giant molecular cloud (GMC) is turned into stars. This is partly due to the negative effect of stellar feedback from young massive star clusters. In a recent paper, we introduced a novel 1D numerical treatment of the effects of stellar feedback from young massive clusters on their natal clouds, which we named WARPFIELD. Here, we present version 2 of the WARPFIELD code, containing improved treatments of the thermal evolution of the gas and the fragmentation of the feedback-driven shell. As part of this update, we have produced new cooling and heating tables that account for the combined effects of photoionization and collisional ionization on the cooling rate of the gas, which we now make publically available. We employ our updated version of WARPFIELD to investigate the impact of stellar feedback on GMCs with a broad range of masses and surface densities and a variety of density profiles. We show that the minimum star formation efficiency $\epsilon_{\mathrm{min}}$, i.e. the star formation efficiency above which the cloud is destroyed by feedback and further star formation is shut off, is mainly set by the average cloud surface density. A star formation efficiency of 1-6 % is generally sufficient to destroy a GMC. We also find star formation efficiencies per free-fall time $\epsilon_{\mathrm{ff}} \sim 0.3$ %, in good agreement with recent observations. Our results imply that stellar feedback alone is sufficient to explain the low observed star formation efficiencies of GMCs. Finally, we show that very massive clouds with steep density profiles - possible proxies of the giant clumps observed in galaxies at $z \approx 2$ - are more resilient to feedback than typical GMCs, with $\epsilon_{\mathrm{min}}$ between 1 and 12 %., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Extremely metal poor (EMP) stars in the Milky Way inherited the chemical composition of the gas out of which they formed. They therefore carry the chemical fingerprint of the first stars in their spectral lines. It is commonly assumed that EMP stars form from gas that was enriched by only one progenitor supernova ('mono-enriched'). However, recent numerical simulations show that the first stars form in small clusters. Consequently, we expect several supernovae to contribute to the abundances of an EMP star ('multi-enriched'). We analyse seven recently observed EMP stars from the TOPoS survey by applying the divergence of the chemical displacement and find that J1035+0641 is mono-enriched ($p_{mono}=53\%$) and J1507+0051 is multi-enriched ($p_{mono}=4\%$). For the remaining five stars we can not make a distinct prediction ($p_{mono} \lesssim 50\%$) due to theoretical and observational uncertainties. The spin and shape of galaxies at the present day have been well-studied both observationally and theoretically. At high redshifts, however, we have to rely on numerical simulations. In this study, we investigate the shape and spin of minihaloes with masses of $M \sim 10^5$--$10^7 \, {\rm M_{\odot}}$ which are of particular interest as they are the sites where the first stars in the Universe form. We analyse a large sample of these minihaloes, selected from a high resolution cosmological simulation. The first minihaloes form at $z \simeq 24$ and by the end of the simulation at $z \simeq 14$ our sample includes $\sim 9000$ minihaloes. We find that the spin parameter of the minihaloes follows a log-normal distribution with minimal dependence on redshift. Most minihaloes are prolate, but those formed at the highest redshifts are more prolate than those formed at lower redshifts. On the scale of the virial radius, there is a good correlation between the shape and spin of the gas and that of the dark matter. However, this correlation breaks down in gas which is cooling and undergoing gravitational collapse. We show, contrary to previous assumptions, that although the direction of the spin of the central dense gas correlates well with that of the halo, the magnitude of the spin of the dense gas is uncorrelated with that of the halo. Therefore, measurements of the spin of minihaloes on large scales tell us little about the angular momentum of the gas responsible for forming the first stars., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication

Fitting equilibrium dynamical models to observational data is an essential step in understanding the structure of the gaseous hot haloes that surround our own and other galaxies. However, the two main categories of models that are used in the literature are poorly suited for this task: (i) simple barotropic models are analytic and can therefore be adjusted to match the observations, but are clearly unrealistic because the rotational velocity $v_\phi(R,z)$ does not depend on the distance $z$ from the galactic plane, while (ii) models obtained as a result of cosmological galaxy formation simulations are more realistic, but are impractical to fit to observations due to high computational cost. Here we bridge this gap by presenting a general method to construct axisymmetric baroclinic equilibrium models of rotating galactic coronae in arbitrary external potentials. We consider in particular a family of models whose equipressure surfaces in the $(R,z)$ plane are ellipses of varying axis ratio. These models are defined by two one-dimensional functions, the axial ratio of pressure $q_{\rm axis}(z)$ and the value of the pressure $P_{\rm axis}(z)$ along the galaxy's symmetry axis. These models can have a rotation speed $v_\phi(R,z)$ that realistically decreases as one moves away from the galactic plane, and can reproduce the angular momentum distribution found in cosmological simulations. The models are computationally cheap to construct and can thus be used in fitting algorithms. We provide a python code that given $q_{\rm axis}(z)$, $P_{\rm axis}(z)$ and $\Phi(R,z)$ returns $\rho(R,z)$, $T(R,z)$, $P(R,z)$, $v_\phi(R,z)$. Massive $10^{4-5}\rm\ M_{\odot}$ black hole seeds resulting from the \textit{direct} collapse of pristine gas require a metal-free atomic cooling halo with extremely low H$_2$ fraction, allowing the gas to cool isothermally in the presence of atomic hydrogen. In order to achieve this chemo-thermodynamical state, the gas needs to be irradiated by both: Lyman-Werner (LW) photons in the energy range $11.2-13.6$ eV capable of photodissociating H$_2$, and $0.76$ eV photons capable of photodetaching H$^-$. Employing cosmological simulations capable of creating the first galaxies in high resolution, we explore if there exists a subset that favours DCBH formation in their vicinity. We find a fundamental relation between the maximum distance at which a galaxy can cause DCBH formation and its star formation rate (SFR), which automatically folds in the chemo-thermodynamical effects of both H$_2$ photo-dissociation and H$^-$ photo-detachment. This is in contrast to the scatter in the LW flux parameter seen at the maximum distance. It shows up to a 3 order of magnitude scatter, which can be interpreted as a scatter in `J$_{crit}$'. Thus, computing the rates and/or the LW flux from a galaxy is no longer necessary to identify neighbouring sites of DCBH formation, as our relation allows one to distinguish regions where DCBH formation could be triggered in the vicinity of a galaxy of a given SFR., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Magnetic fields are ubiquitously observed in the interstellar medium (ISM) of present-day star-forming galaxies with dynamically relevant energy densities. Using three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the supernova (SN) driven ISM in the flux-freezing approximation (ideal MHD) we investigate the impact of the magnetic field on the chemical and dynamical evolution of the gas, fragmentation and the formation of molecular clouds. We follow the chemistry with a network of six species (H$^{+}$, H, H$_2$, C$^+$, CO, free electrons) including local shielding effects. We find that magnetic fields thicken the disc by a factor of a few to a scale height of $\sim100\,\mathrm{pc}$, delay the formation of dense (and molecular) gas by $\sim25\,\mathrm{Myr}$ and result in differently shaped gas structures. The magnetised gas fragments into fewer clumps, which are initially at subcritical mass-to-flux ratios, $M/\Phi\approx0.3(M/\Phi)_\mathrm{crit}$, and accrete gas preferentially parallel to the magnetic field lines until supercritial mass-to-flux ratios of up to order 10 are reached. The accretion rates onto molecular clouds scale with $\dot{M}\propto M^{1.5}$. The median of the inter-cloud velocity dispersion is $\sim2-5\,\mathrm{km\,s}^{-1}$ and lower than the internal velocity dispersion in the clouds ($\sim3-7\,\mathrm{km\,s}^{-1}$).
