Abstract

Results of searches for the pentaquark states Ξ(1860)0 and Ξ(1860)−− in neutron-carbon interactions at an average neutron energy of about 51 GeV via the EXCHARM experiment are presented. No such states are found in the Ξ− π + and Ξ− π − effective-mass spectra examined in this study. Upper limits on the cross sections for Ξ(1860)0 and Ξ(1860)−− production are estimated. 205. Nonlinear NMR in a Superfluid B Phase of [sup 3]He in Aerogel.

Abstract

The properties of liquid ³He in a low-density aerogel preliminarily covered with a few monolayers of [sup 4]He were studied by pulsed and nonlinear CW NMR techniques. It was found that an NMR frequency shift from the Larmor value exhibits a sharp increase at a magnetization tilting angle exceeding 104°. Nonlinear CW NMR signals related to the formation of a macroscopic region featuring homogeneous precession of the magnetization (homogeneous precession domain) were observed. The experimental results confirm that the low-temperature superfluid ³He phase in the aerogel is analogous to the B-phase in bulk ³He and indicate that the spin supercurrents play an important role in the spin dynamics of superfluid ³He in aerogel. Abstract

A mathematical model is developed and a numerical analysis is performed for an electric breakdown in a hydrogen–air mixture with a low concentration of H[sub 2]. It is shown that, at sufficiently low pressures p < 10[sup –2] atm, a small molecular-hydrogen additive (η = 5×10[sup –5]–5×10[sup –3]) decreases the reduced field of an electric breakdown in air by a factor of more than 2 because of the appearance of an additional detachment process associated with the chain hydrogen-oxidation reaction. Detailed calculations are performed for the mean number density of negative oxygen ions [O[sub 2][sup -]] = 10[sup 3]cm[sup –3] and the hydrogen concentration in air [H[sub 2]] = 0.5, 0.05, and 0.005%. It is found that, for [H[sub 2]] = 0.005%, the breakdown can develop under the action of a geoelectric field of 1.3 V/cm at p=10[sup –4] atm. © 2000 MAIK “Nauka / Interperiodica”. Abstract

The production of $$\bar D$$ mesons in neutroncarbon interactions at 40-70 GeV/c has been investigated. The $$\bar D$$ mesons were detected via the hadronic decay modes $$\bar D^0 \to K^{* + } (892)\pi ^ - $$ and D→ K(892)ππ. In the kinematical region x>0.5 and p<1 GeV/c the following inclusive cross sections were measured: $$\sigma _{\bar D^0 } = (28 \pm 14)\mu b$$ and $$\sigma _{D^ - } = (28 \pm 13)\mu b$$ per carbon nucleus. The invariant longitudinal momentum spectra can be described by (1− x) with $$N_{\bar D^0 } = 1.1 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.4$$ and $$N_{D^ - } = 0.8 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.4$$ The transverse momentum spectra were parametrized by exp (− Bp) with $$B_{\bar D^0 } = (1.2_{ - 0.9}^{ + 1.1} )({{GeV} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{GeV} c}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} c})^{ - 2} $$ and $$B_{D^ - } = (1.8_{ - 1.0}^{ + 1.3} )({{GeV} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{GeV} c}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} c})^{ - 2} $$ . The A-dependence of the polarization of Λ s produced inclusively in neutron-nucleus interactions at a mean neutron momentum of about 40 GeV/c has been measured in an experiment performed using the BIS-2 spectrometer at the Serpukhov accelerator. Carbon, Aluminium and Copper targets were used. The Λ s were produced in the kinematical region of 0.6< p<1.3 GeV/c and 0.2< x<0.9. Abstract

New data on the observation and study of a narrow resonance decaying into Σ(1,385) K have been obtained. The mass of the resonance is (1,956) MeV/c, and its width is (27±15) MeV/c. The resonance is produced in the diffraction dissociation of neutrons on quasi-free nucleons of carbon nuclei. The slope parameter of the differential cross section in P is (9.9±3.0) (GeV/c). The cross section times the branching ratio is (0.22±0.04) μb per nucleon. The resonance has one of the natural spinparities: 5/2, 7/2 and so on. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The inclusive production of charmed baryons Λ by 40-70 GeV neutrons on carbon has been observed. The decays $$\Lambda _c^ + \to \bar K^0 p\pi ^ + \pi ^ -$$ (130 ± 18 events) and Λ→ Λπππ (57±14 events) have been detected. The mean value of Λ mass is (2,268±6) MeV/c. The invariant cross section for X>0.5 is described by E· dσ/ dp∝ exp(−) bP·(1− X) with b=(2.5±0.6) (GeV/c) and n=(1.5±0.5). The cross section of the Λ inclusive production measured for X>0.5 times the branching ratios are $$\sigma \cdot B(\bar K^0 p\pi ^ + \pi ^ - ) = (10 \pm 4)$$ μb per carbon nucleus and σ· B( Λ π π π)=(2.3±1.1) μb per carbon nucleus. Abstract

Unusual spin-precession states of [sup 3]He-B in which the magnetization is half the equilibrium value are investigated by continuous-wave NMR methods. Signals at frequencies equal to 1/2 and 3/2 of the magnetization precession frequency are observed in two such states. Abstract

A search for baryonia with negative and positive strangeness decaying respectively into $$\Lambda + \bar p + pions$$ and $$\bar \Lambda + p + pions$$ has been carried out in a neutron beam with a mean momentum of ≅40 GeV/c in an experiment performed at the Serpukhov accelerator. There is a strong indication of the existence of these baryonia. The following four charge states are observed for negative and positive strangeness: neutral, negative, positive and doubly charged. Their mean mass is 3055±25 MeV/c and the width Γ≦36±15 MeV/c. The data show that the isotopic spin of the baryonia is ≧3/2. The baryonia production cross sections in the acceptable kinematic region X≧0.2 and P≦1 GeV/c times the branching ratios of the observed decays are of the order of 1 μb per nucleon. 215. NMR study of 3He bubbles in phase-separated solid 3He –4He mixtures.

Abstract

3 He droplets embedded in a solid4 He matrix have been studied by NMR and pressure measurements. One feature of the experiment is that the mixture crystals, of3 He concentration 1%, are grown under constant pressure conditions to minimise the formation of defects. A number of sample pressures below 34 bar have been studied. Isotopic phase separation and the melting of the bubbles are clearly observed. Measurements of T1 , T2 and magnetisation give detailed information on the structure of the droplets. At an initial sample pressure of 28.3 bar preliminary measurements of the T1 of the liquid bubbles show a temperature dependence of the form (A+ B/T2)−1. This indicates that the expected relaxation in the liquid is augmented by a constant contribution, probably from the surface of the droplets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Structural and functional properties of recombinant IL-4δ2, a naturally occurring splice variant of human IL-4 with a deletion of the loop region 22−37, have been analyzed. IL-4δ2 has α-helical structure and most likely preserves the “up−up−down−down” topology typical of the four-helix-bundle cytokines. IL-4δ2 interacts specifically with the α chain of IL-4R and competes effectively with IL-4 for the common binding sites. Thus, IL-4δ2 may act as a regulator of the cytokine net, being the natural antagonist of IL-4. Abstract

Yersinia pestis capsular antigen Caf1 is shown to be a β-structural protein that in polymeric form possesses very high conformational stability. Different approaches show that a dimer is the minimal cooperative block of Caf1 adhesin. Caf1 dimer interacts effectively with IL-1 receptors of human macrophage and epithelial cells. The specificity of such interaction is confirmed by the inhibition of IL-1α binding by Caf1. The Caf1 role in pneumonic plague pathogenesis is discussed. 219. Atmospheric Disturbances and Radiation Impulses Caused by Large-Meteoroid Impacts on the Surface of Mars. II. Radiation Impulse Characteristics and Parameters of the Warm Layer

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the calculation of spectral and angular characteristics of radiation emitted by the disturbed region after the vertical impacts on the Martian surface of stony meteoroids with radii R0from 1 to 100 m at speeds of 11–20 km/s. The time dependences are given for the density of the radiation flux incident on horizontal surface areas located at different distances from the impact point. For small impactors (R0= 1 m), the heating of the surface and surrounding gas by the radiation impulse from the hot region formed after the impact is insignificant even at the crater edge. However, the radiation impulse that heats up the surface is also emitted during the meteoroid flight through the atmosphere. Although this heating is insufficient to initiate evaporation, heat transfer by turbulent diffusion leads to the formation of a layer with temperatures that substantially exceed the initial temperature of the atmosphere. For large impactors (R0= 100 m), the total specific impulse of the plume radiation gives rise to the emergence of the heated layer with a thickness on the order of several meters within several kilometers of the impact point. The formation of this “warm” layer may lead to the formation of a high-speed jet moving along the Martian surface as well as eddies at the front of the precursor with a subsequent intense rise of dust.

220. Atmospheric Disturbances and Radiation Impulses Caused by Large-Meteoroid Impacts on the Surface of Mars. I. Formation and Evolution of Dust Cloud

Abstract

We consider the mechanisms of the formation of dust ejected from craters produced by large-meteoroid impacts on the Martian surface, as well as the mechanisms of the elevation of dust that already existed on the surface, due to impulsed aeolian processes. Detailed numerical calculations of the dust injection, the shock wave propagation, and the formation and evolution of the dust cloud are carried out for vertical impacts of meteoroids with sizes from 1 m to 100 m. The results of these calculations show that dust raised by a 1-m impactor is sufficient to produce a local dust storm, while the mass of dust formed in impacts of large bodies is comparable to the mass of a regional or even a global dust storm. The impact detection rates for 1-, 5-, 20-, and 100-m-sized meteoroids are estimated to be a few impact events per year, one event in every 5–6 years, one event in every 300–800 years, and one event in every 5000–20 000 years, respectively. In the last case, the thickness of the global layer of precipitated dust and small fragments, which has been formed through impacts over a period of 107–108years, is comparable to the thickness of the global dust layer on the Martian surface. In the first case, the mass of raised dust is greater than that for typical “dust devils.” The speed of impulsed wind at large distances from the impact site is shown to exceed the critical speed at which the blowing-off of dust from the surface begins. Some factors that may enhance the dust ejection have been previously ignored in numerical calculations. We discuss here the role of these factors. The second part of our study deals with the determination of the impact-induced radiation impulse and the estimation of its effect on the rise of dust.

Abstract: Results from the multiplicity distributions of inclusive photons and charged particles, scaling of particle multiplicities, event-by-event multiplicity fluctuations, and charged-neutral fluctuations in 158A GeV Pb+Pb collisions are presented and discussed. A scaling of charged particle multiplicity as N part1.07±0.05 and photos as N part1.12±0.03 have been observed, indicating violation of naive wounded nucleon model. The analysis of localized charged-neutral fluctuation indicates a model-independent demonstration of non-statistical fluctuations in both charged particles and photons in limited azimuthal regions. However, no correlated charged-neutral fluctuations are observed.

Abstract

In November 1999, light flashes were recorded on the Moon at the peak of the Leonid stream activity. It is likely that they were produced by the impacts of the stream particles on the lunar surface. In the present work the impacts of cometary particles are studied by solving a two-dimensional radiative-gasdynamic problem for particles of different sizes and densities; the flux of radiation of postimpact hot gas and plasma is calculated, and the luminous efficiencies are estimated, as are the sizes of the particles which could produce the observed flashes.

223. Evaluation of Light Flashes Caused by Impacts of Small Comets on the Surface of the Moon

Abstract

Images of the dayglow of the Earth's atmosphere in the ultraviolet wavelength region obtained by the photometer of the spacecraft Dynamics Explorerrevealed dark spots of the order of 50 km in diameter. These “atmospheric holes” were interpreted by the American physicist Frank as concentrations of water vapor formed as a result of the disintegration and vaporization of so-called small comets at high altitudes. An analysis of the same images showed that their explanation requires a frequency of comet collisions with the Earth as high as 20 events a minute! This sensational hypothesis evoked a heated scientific debate. The paper below contains an analysis of the possibility of observing Frank's hypothetical comets during their collisions with the Moon. By solving a two-dimensional radiative–gasdynamic problem, the authors demonstrate that the flashes occurring during such impacts can be observed from the Earth with ordinary telescopes.

Abstract

The ignition of acetylene by low-temperature nonequilibrium plasma of a high-voltage nanosecond discharge is experimentally and theoretically studied. The ignition delay time for CH: O mixtures behind the reflected shock-wave front is measured. It is experimentally shown that discharge initiation leads to a considerable shortening of the ignition delay time. For lean mixtures, this effect is more pronounced. Numerical modeling of discharge and ignition processes under the experimental conditions is carried out. A good agreement between the calculation and experimental results for the ignition delay time is obtained. Analysis of the calculation results shows that the dominant mechanism of the effect of nonequilibrium plasma on ignition is related to the accumulation of atoms and radicals in discharge plasma. Abstract: A procedure for calculating thermodynamic and optical properties of the vapors of cosmic bodies entering the earth’s atmosphere is described. Calculations were carried out on the basis of a mixture of the 16 elements Fe-O-Mg-Si-C-N-H-S-Al-Ca-Na-K-Ti-Cr-Mn-Ni for bodies of different chemical composition: H-, LL-, and C-chondrites, comet matter, and ice in the temperature range of 2–40 kK. The scale of quanta energies used in calculations of spectral absorption coefficients numbered approximately 22 thousand points. Examples of calculations are given.

The influence of the long-range Coulomb potential on the ionization rate of a hydrogen-like ion has been investigated within the framework of the quasi-classical method. In a rather strong field, the dependence of the ionization rate on the field intensity does not have a purely power-law character in the multiphoton region. The analytical equations obtained are in agreement with the experimental data on the cross section of multiphoton ionization and give an estimate of the threshold field values in the tunneling region. The inclusive production of charmed baryonsΛc+ by 40–70 GeV neutrons on carbon has been observed. The decays " (130 ± 18 events) andΛc+→Λ0π+π+π− (57±14 events) have been detected. The mean value ofΛc+ mass is (2,268±6) MeV/c2. The invariant cross section forX>0.5 is described byE·d3σ/dp3∝ exp(−)bPT·(1−X)n withb=(2.5±0.6) (GeV/c)−1 andn=(1.5±0.5).

The production of " mesons in neutroncarbon interactions at 40–70 GeV/c has been investigated. The " mesons were detected via the hadronic decay modes " andD−→K*+(892)π−π−. Abstract

The production of F-mesons on nuclear targets (carbon, aluminium and copper) by high-energy neutrons has been analysed. The dependence of the F-production cross section ratios on the nuclear mass numberA was parametrized by the power lawAa witha=0.81±0.06. Within the sensitive kinematic rangexF>0 andpT<1 GeV/c we have not observed any dependence of the exponenta on the longitudinal or transverse momentum. A possible interpretation of the measuredA-dependence is discussed in the Appendix.

The production of "-mesons on hydrogen and nuclear targets (carbon and aluminium) by (38–70) GeV neutrons has been analysed. The decay mode " has been studied. The longitudinalpL and transversepT momenta have been reconstructed and described by the forms (1−XF)N withN=2.3−0.3+0.2 and exp(-BpT2) withB=(1.3−0.3+0.2) (GeV/c)−2, respectively. In the sensitive kinematic region of (30≤pl≤60) GeV/c " 0.5)$$ " /> andpT≤1GeV/c the cross sections are: σH2=(3.1±1.1)μb,σc = (27.5±9.3) μb/C nucleus andσAl=(49.6±16.3)μb/Al nucleus. Abstract

Associated production off-mesons and strange particles by neutrons at energies of 30–70 GeV has been analysed. It has been found that at least 67% of inclusivef-meson production in the kinematic regionxF>0.1 andpT<1 GeV/c proceeds via OZI-allowed processes with extra strange particles. Doublef-meson production has also been observed and its cross section in the full kinematic region is estimated to be 15 ± 9µb.

Abstract

In this paper we present the results of a search for the charmed strange baryon Ξc+ in the final states Λ0π+π+K− and Ξ−π+π+. The experiment was performed using the magnetic spectrometer BIS-2 with a hydrogen target located in the neutron beam of the Serpukhov accelerator. A narrow peak in the Λ0π+π+K− state is observed at a mass of ≈2440 and possibly also of ≈2310 MeV/c2, corresponding to signals for the Ξc+ → Λ0π+π+K− and Ξc+ → Σ0π+π+K− (Σ0 → Λ0γ) decays respectively. The statistics obtained for the Ξ−π+π+ state is too low to make any conclusion.

Abstract

We present results of the exclusive diffractive reaction np ? ?0K0p at 0·08 < |t|< 0·53 GeV2/c2 and momenta between 30–70 GeV/c at the Serpukhov neutron beam. Thet-dependence is exp (Bt) withB= 11·4± 2·3 (GeV/c)-2 and it exhibits the diffractive minimum at ¦t¦ 0·28 GeV2/c2 for ?0K0 massesM < 1·8 GeV/c2.B decreases with increasingM. Correlation with the beam direction is observed in the rest frame of the ?0K0 system: the cross section rises for the forward-going ?0. The rise is more pronounced for higherM. The cross section of reaction np ? ?0K0p for 0<|t|< 0·53 GeV2/c2 is 10·3 ± 2·5 ± 2·8 µb.

Abstract

An experiment on deep inelastic muon nucleon scattering in order to study the x-dependence of nucleon structure functions and their ratios over a range ofQ2=50–200 GeV2 andx= =0·4–2·0 is proposed. Such measurements performed on a number of nuclei with atomic weights from 2 to 207 provide new information for detailed studies of the EMC effect and test models explaining thex-behaviour of the nucleon structure functions and their ratios. The measurements are decisive for the proof that a quark-parton model of the nucleus describes adequately nuclear structure probed at high energies. The upgraded high luminosity BCDMS spectrometer with improved resolution in transferred energy? can be used for the measurements.

Abstract

In this paper we study the inclusive production of the charmed baryon Λc+ in interactions of 40–70 GeV/c neutrons with protons of hydrogen target. The experiment has been performed with the use of magnetic spectrometer BIS-2 located in the neutron beam of Serpukhov accelerator. The signal of Λc+ is observed in the effective mass spectra of Λ°π+π+π−. After the removal of interactions occurring on the container of liquid hydrogen, the signal consists of 14 combinations corresponding to ≈4 standard deviations of background. Its mean value is 2262 MeV/c2, width of the bin containing signal is 20 MeV/c2. On the basis of this signal we determine the value of cross section of Λc+ production times the branching ratio of its observed decay modeσ. Br (Λc+ → Λ°π+π+π−)=0·26±0·11 μb in the kinematic region ofxF>0·5 andpT<1 GeV/c.

Abstract

A method is presented for averaging the radiation transfer equations for a nonequilibrium plasma of plane geometry. The averaging of transfer difference equations is carried out separately for each spectral line and for groups of a continous spectrum. A difference scheme is obtained for one-sided radiation fluxes. Averaging coefficients are defined, characterizing absorption and emission of radiation by a cell of the difference scheme.

246. NMR study of 3He bubbles in phase-separated solid 3He –4He mixtures

Abstract

3He droplets embedded in a solid4He matrix have been studied by NMR and pressure measurements. One feature of the experiment is that the mixture crystals, of3He concentration 1%, are grown under constant pressure conditions to minimise the formation of defects. A number of sample pressures below 34 bar have been studied. Isotopic phase separation and the melting of the bubbles are clearly observed. Measurements ofT1,T2and magnetisation give detailed information on the structure of the droplets. At an initial sample pressure of 28.3 bar preliminary measurements of theT1of the liquid bubbles show a temperature dependence of the form(A+ B/T2)−1. This indicates that the expected relaxation in the liquid is augmented by a constant contribution, probably from the surface of the droplets.

Abstract

New data on the observation and study of a narrow resonance decaying intoS-(1,385)K+ have been obtained. The mass of the resonance is (1,956-6+8) MeV/c2, and its width is (27±15) MeV/c2. The resonance is produced in the diffraction dissociation of neutrons on quasi-free nucleons of carbon nuclei. The slope parameter of the differential cross section inPT2 is (9.9±3.0) (GeV/c)-2. The cross section times the branching ratio is (0.22±0.04) µb per nucleon. The resonance has one of the natural spinparities: 5/2+, 7/2- and so on.
