201. Development of Cellulose-Reinforced Polyurethane Coatings: A Novel Eco-Friendly Approach for Wind Turbine Blade Protection

Abstract

Wind energy is considered a clean energy source and is predicted to be one of the primary sources of electricity. However, leading-edge erosion of wind turbine blades due to impacts from rain drops, solid particles, hailstones, bird fouling, ice, etc., is a major concern for the wind energy sector that reduces annual energy production. Therefore, leading-edge protection of turbine blades has been an important topic of research and development in the last 20 years. Further, there are critical issues related to the amount of waste produced, including glass fiber, carbon fiber, and various harmful volatile organic compounds in turbine fabrication and their end-of-life phases. Hence, it is vital to use eco-friendly, solvent-free materials and to extend blade life to make wind energy a perfect clean energy source. In this study, cellulose microparticles (CMP) and cellulose microfibers (CMF) have been used as fillers to reinforce water-based polyurethane (PU) coatings developed on glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) substrates by a simple spray method for the first time. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images show the agglomerated particles of CMP and fiber-like morphology of CMF. Fourier transform infrared spectra of CMP, CMF, and related coatings exhibit associated C–H, C=O, and N–H absorption bands of cellulose and polyurethane. Thermal gravimetric analysis shows that CMP is stable up to 285 °C, whereas CMF degradation is observed at 243 °C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of C 1s and O 1s core levels of CMP, CMF and related coatings show C–C/C–H, C–O, C–OH, and O–C=O bonds associated with cellulose structure. The solid particle erosion resistance properties of the coatings have been evaluated with different concentrations of CMP and CMF at impact angles of 30° and 90°, and all of the coatings are observed to outperform the PU and bare GFRP substrates. 202. Mitigating effect of chitosan-coated zinc oxide nanoparticles on cryopreservation-induced DNA damage in human spermatozoa.

Abstract

Zinc, an essential micronutrient, is an important mediator of sperm function. Supplementation of zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZnONPs) to semen cryopreservation medium has shown beneficial effects on sperm function, mainly due to its antioxidant and membrane stabilization properties. However, the ZnONPs are known to be membrane impermeable. In the current study, we explored the beneficial properties of membrane permeable zinc oxide nanoparticles on semen cryopreservation outcome. For the study, 52 liquefied human ejaculates were cryopreserved with chitosan-coated ZnONPs and stored in liquid nitrogen for one week. Samples were thawed and assessed for the sperm functional characters and DNA integrity. Significantly higher motility (P < 0.05), prolonged survival (P < 0.05) and lower DNA damage (P < 0.05) was observed in spermatozoa of semen samples cryopreserved with chitosan-coated ZnONPs. In conclusion, the presence of chitosan-coated ZnONPs in the ejaculate prior to cryopreservation increases the survival and decreases DNA damage without compromising with the functional competence of spermatozoa. 203. Environmental Activism: Unveiling the Dynamics of the Anti-Sterlite Protests through Social Media Mobilization.

Abstract

This paper explores the vital role of social media platforms like Facebook in enabling civic engagement and environmental activism, through a case study of the local movement against Vedanta's Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Specifically, it analyses Facebook posts during peak months of protests from February to May 2018, culminating in tragic violence but ultimately resulted in plant closure. The study conducts discourse analysis on Facebook posts from the "Ban Sterlite. Save Thoothukudi" and "Thoothukudi People" pages which were key coordinating platforms for anti-Sterlite protesters with over 22,000 and 138,000 followers respectively. Historian Ramachandra Guha (2000) highlighted the importance of media participation for realizing environmental movements' democratic potential. This paper upholds his argument, demonstrating how through enabling marginalized voices, social media facilitated the anti-Sterlite movement. By studying the nuanced role social media played in a contentious environmental movement, this paper highlights implications for leveraging digital platforms strategically to advance social change causes. Critically, this study is important because it provides an in-depth examination of how public and marginalized communities use social media for activism amidst structural oppression and state-sanctioned violence. 228. Malignant Hyperthermia Following Succinylcholine Administration: A Case Report

Abstract

This is a case of suspected malignant hyperthermia probably the 11th reported case in India and third from Kerala in the last 2 decades. Our patient is a 22-year-old female who was posted for emergency laproscopic ovarian cystectomy for left adnexal cyst torsion, masseter spasm was noted intra operatively after succinylcholine administration and the patient was intubated and connected to ventilator but continued to show increased ETCO2 60-70 mmHg intra-operatively. The temperature showed 37.8°C and a BP of 160/90, meanwhile other measure was taken to rule out other causes of hypercapnia. The surgery got over in 60 minutes and the ETCO2 found close to normal towards the end of surgery. The hyper dynamic response was managed using nitroglycerin and beta blockers. After conferring adequate tidal volume and muscle power, patient was extubated in post operative ICU. Post operation was uneventful and the patient was discharged in stable condition. This is a good example of how the patient can be managed in the unavailability of the lifesaving antidote – Dantrolene and emphasizes the need to ensure adequate awareness among health professionals about this life threatening condition that is rarely found and reported in Indian population and the diagnostic and therapeutic measures that can be taken in such a situation.

229. A Study on Prescribing Pattern, Indications and Rationality of Restricted Antibiotic Use in a Tertiary Care Hospital

Background: Antibiotic stewardship aims to optimise restricted antibiotic use and thereby prevent the emergence of antibiotic resistance and improve treatment outcome. Resistance to conventional antimicrobial’s is a major reason why restricted antibiotics are prescribed. Aim: To assess the prescribing pattern of restricted antibiotics, the indications for which restricted antibiotics were prescribed, the drug related problems associated and the sensitivity pattern of the isolated organisms. Results: Out of 340 patients included in the study, majority of patients was in the age group of 58-67(60.06 ±14.90) in both genders. There was a male (64.12%) dominance observed in the study populace and the minimum and maximum age observed was 18 and 93 years respectively. Most commonly prescribed antibiotic was Piperacillin tazobactum (31%) followed by Linezolid (16.06%). Empirically the most prescribed antibiotic was Piperacillin tazobactum (27.37%) while in definitive therapy it was Cefepime tazobactum (10.63%). The most common indication for which restricted antibiotics prescribed were for respiratory tract infection (n=116), followed by infection prophylaxis (n=114). Mean days of restricted antibiotic therapy was found to be 8.85 days ± 8.11. The maximum duration of antibiotic treatment was 62 days and minimum was 1 day. In 47% of cases IV to oral conversion was possible. When analysed retrospectively, in majority of the patients the duration of restricted antibiotic treatment was inappropriate (69.71%) while the inappropriateness in frequency and dose were 7.05% and 3.23% respectively. The total number of cultures collected were 292 in that 120 cultures were urine and found growth in 50.83%, followed by 84 cultures in sputum which accounted for 67.85% growth. The most common organism isolated was Klebsiella pneumoniae 39.73% cases followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa 17.46% and Acinetobacter baumannii15.41. There was clinical cure in 91.47% of cases. Conclusion: When analysed retrospectively majority of the restricted antibiotics showed inappropriateness. This higher amount of inappropriateness could have been avoided to a certain extent, by the timely interventions of a clinical pharmacist. By implementing an effective antimicrobial stewardship program we could improve the rational use of restricted antibiotics and thereby prevent the future resistance and improve clinical outcome.

In any patient, the skin to subarachnoid space depth varies significantly at completely different levels of the spinal cord and it additionally varies from patient to patient at the same vertebral level as per patient characteristics like age, sex and body mass index. An estimate of the skin to subarachnoid space depth has been shown to minimize the number of unsuccessful tries, consecutive attempts, traumatic or blood-filled lumbar punctures, typically acting as a depth guide for correct spinal needle placement. In this study we estimated the subarachnoid space depth using ultrasound, stocker’s formula and craig’s formula to determine which provided better correlation to the actual subarachnoid space depth. This study is a Prospective observational study done in the Department of Anaesthesiology, Saveetha Medical College and Hospital, Chennai from August 2020 to February 2021.This study concluded that Ultrasound guided measurement of subarachnoid space depth provided better correlation with actual subarachnoid space depth compared to stocker’s and craig’s.

Abstract

Inherent cancer phenotypes that are independent of fluctuating cross-talk with the surrounding tissue matrix are highly desirable candidates for targeting tumor cells. Our novel study design uses epithelial cell lines derived from low versus high histologic grade primary breast cancer to effectively diminish the breadth of transient variability generated within the tumor microenvironment of the host, revealing a “paracrine-independent expression of grade-associated” (PEGA) gene signature. PEGA members extended beyond “proliferation-driven” signatures commonly associated with aggressive, high-grade breast cancer. The calcium-binding protein S100P was prominent among PEGA genes overexpressed in high-grade tumors. A three-member fingerprint of S100P-correlated genes, consisting of GPRC5A, FXYD3, and PYCARD, conferred poor outcome in multiple breast cancer data sets, irrespective of estrogen receptor status but dependent on tumor size (P < 0.01). S100P silencing markedly diminished coregulated gene transcripts and reversed aggressive tumor behavior. Exposure to pathway-implicated agents, including the calmodulin inhibitor N-(6-aminohexyl)-5-chloro-1-naphthalenesulfonamide, phenothiazine, and chlorpromazine, resulted in rapid apoptotic cell death in high-grade tumor cells resistant to the chemotherapeutic drug cisplatin. This is the first comprehensive study describing molecular phenotypes intimately associated with histologic grade whose expression remains relatively fixed despite an unavoidably changing environment to which tumor cells are invariably exposed. Abstract

Breast cancer brain metastasis is resistant to therapy and a particularly poor prognostic feature in patient survival. Altered metabolism is a common feature of cancer cells, but little is known as to what metabolic changes benefit breast cancer brain metastases. We found that brain metastatic breast cancer cells evolved the ability to survive and proliferate independent of glucose due to enhanced gluconeogenesis and oxidations of glutamine and branched chain amino acids, which together sustain the nonoxidative pentose pathway for purine synthesis. Silencing expression of fructose-1,6-bisphosphatases (FBP) in brain metastatic cells reduced their viability and improved the survival of metastasis-bearing immunocompetent hosts. Clinically, we showed that brain metastases from human breast cancer patients expressed higher levels of FBP and glycogen than the corresponding primary tumors. Together, our findings identify a critical metabolic condition required to sustain brain metastasis and suggest that targeting gluconeogenesis may help eradicate this deadly feature in advanced breast cancer patients. Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Oesophageal candidiasis (OC) is one of the most common infections among patients with liver cirrhosis. The present study evaluates the potential predictors for OC among liver cirrhosis patients. METHODOLOGY: This retrospective study was conducted in the tertiary care centre of coastal Karnataka from January 2016 to April 2022. Patients aged 18 and above with a confirmed diagnosis of liver cirrhosis were selected. Patients were equally divided into two groups, i.e., case and control, based on the presence and absence of OC. RESULTS: A total of 1513 patients with cirrhosis underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Of these, 50 (3.3%) were diagnosed with OC and taken into case group. An equal number of patients were selected in control group and matched for gender, age and etiology. Most participants were male (94%), with a mean age of 48.46±11.82 years. A lower serum creatinine value was noted among patients with OC. Binary logistic regression identified serum creatinine as an independent predictor for OC (OR: 7.65, 95% CI: 2.012–29.08; p-value: 0.003). Abstract

Dementia is an irreversible progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the prodromal state of Dementia, which is further classifed into a progressive state (i.e., pMCI) and a stable state (i.e., sMCI). With the development of deep learning, the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have Dementia great progress in image recognition using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) for diagnosis. Rather than training an entire model from scratch, transfer learning approach uses the CNN model by fine-tuning them, to classify MR images into Dementia ,mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and normal control (NC). The performance of this method has been evaluated over Dementia dataset by changing the learning rate of the model. Moreover, in this study, in order to demonstrate the transfer learning approach we utilize different pre-trained deep learning models such as GoogLeNet, VGG-16, AlexNet and ResNet-18, and compare their efficiency to classify Dementia. The overall classification accuracy resulted by GoogLeNet for training and testing was 99.84% and 98.25% respectively, which was exceptionally more than other models training and testing accuracies. Abstract

Regression Analysis is statistical technique to model data. But the presence of outliers and influential points affect data modelling and its interpretation. Robust regression analysis is an alternative choice to this. Here we made an attempt to study different robust estimators and propose a new robust reweighted Sn covariance based regression estimator. We have evaluated the performance empirically and the simulation study shows our proposed estimator is preferable to OLS and other robust regression estimators in terms of the MSE criteria. Also, proposed robust Sn covariance regression estimator produce outperforming results for regression equivaraince and breakdown criterion. Robustness of the proposed estimator is proved empirically. The proposed method is innovatively used to model fluid data. R software is used for simulation and study.
