Abstract

This paper examines the symbolism of the magic lamp in Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) and Kurt Vonnegut's Hal Irwin's Magic Lamp (1957). This study, which uses an archetypal approach to the texts, demonstrates how the American authors use the literary source of the magic lamp image from the Middle Eastern folktale collection of the Arabian Nights, where the lamp essentially represents Aladdin's dream and a quick route to success. Furthermore, the two authors aim to transform this image into the motif of the American dream in its modern contexts. These two literary works likewise made an effort to use the picture as a vehicle for the issues of slavery, racial prejudice, and class inequality. Additionally, the characters’ desire to escape their social and economic constraints is, contrary to what they anticipate, frustrated because of their use of the lamp. Moreover, the wishes of the characters in both texts to escape from their social and economic restraints are, contrary to their expectations, thwarted as a result of their use of the lamp. This negative outcome renders the function of the lamp the opposite to its original function in the literary sources of the texts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A rapid and intuitive method for detecting Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VP) was established by a designed reaction vessel which coupled CRISPR/Cas12a with loop-mediated isothermal nucleic acid amplification (LAMP). There were two spaces in the vessel-holding LAMP reaction solution and CRISPR reaction solution, respectively, which were separated with a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membrane. The PVA membrane could be dissolved with a water solution. The thermolabile hemolysin (TLH) gene of VP was employed as the detection target. After the target sequence of the TLH gene was amplified with LAMP, the PVA membrane would be dissolved and the CRISPR reaction solution mixed with the LAMP reaction solution. In this way, amplicons could be detected with CRISPR/Cas12a in the reaction vessel. The fluorescent signals produced by the positive samples were clearly identified by the naked eye under a UV light, while the negative samples were dark. The whole detection procedure could be finished within 35 min with a detection limit of 100 copies/µL. The designed reaction vessel is easy to produce and can effectively prevent contamination due to the opening of the reaction vessel after the LAMP reaction. Abstract

A unique mold-made oil lamp dating from the Early Islamic period was found in the Old City of Jerusalem. It was inscribed in Greek on the upper and lower parts of its body, including the shoulder and the base. The lamp is of the Jerash type, produced between the late sixth and mid-eighth centuries CE. The lamp owner was most likely a Greek-speaking Christian--a resident of the city or a visitor from across the Jordan--on pilgrimage or on a commercial or social journey, attesting to a continuous presence of Christian visitors in the Holy City in the Early Islamic period. Abstract

This study examines the energy assessment of public buildings where energy-saving measures were critically analyzed. The variables considered for the analysis are lamp power-rating (p), lamp usage-time (t), lamp replacement-costs, manpower-costs, unitary-costs, payback periods, and luminaires. Other factors taken into consideration are illuminance, system replacement, occupancy detection, and lighting inventory. Three apartments within the designated building were considered in the research and consequently compared with apartments of five other public buildings within the same locality. The following were the major parameters obtained within all the buildings: energy-savings, money savings, and payback periods. The results show that when an incandescent bulb is replaced by an LED bulb, an energy-savings of 109.16kwh was recorded. An energy-savings 74.88kwh was obtained when the occupancy detector was introduced as well. As soon as the replacement cost was introduced, an economic savings of N 88 / year was recorded. In the double room lobby where halogen was replaced with LED, a payback period of 4.8 years emerged. Lamps and luminaire replacements yielded payback periods of 3.2 years and 4.3 years respectively. Simulations of the designated building with other buildings based on the lobby, room, and hall show a maximum value of energy-savings at the designated building which was attributed to the number of energy-saving lamps in place.
