Abstract

The laminated soft layer (LSL) that comprises the granular [CoPtCr–SiO2/Pt]N multilayers with perpendicular magnetization is designed to reduce the switching field of exchange coupled composite (ECC) media. The magnetic simulation shows that the reduction in the switching field can be optimized by changing the coupling strength between the adjacent CoPtCr–SiO2 layers in LSL. The reversal mechanism of ECC media with LSL depends on the bilayers number N of [CoPtCr–SiO2/Pt]N. Both simulation and experiments reveal that the domain-wall assisting reversal strongly depends on the thickness of LSL. By properly adjusting the coupling strength inside the LSL, the switching and saturation fields can be significantly reduced at a limited thickness of the soft layer due to decreased domain-wall length by the Pt lamination. Abstract

Ion irradiation has emerged as a powerful tool for the efficient control of uniaxial lattice expansion to fine tune and modulate the otherwise inaccessible complex correlated phases in oxide thin-films. We report the fine tuning of the magnetic moment, ferromagnetic-paramagnetic and metal-insulator transition temperatures in the NiCo2O4 inverse-spinel oxide by creating oxygen deficiencies, employing high energy He-ion irradiation. Tailoring of oxygen vacancies and consequently a uniaxial lattice expansion in the out-of-plane direction drives the system toward the increase of the magnetic moment by two-times in magnitude. The magnetic moment increases with the He-ion irradiation fluence up to 2.5 × 1 0 16 / cm 2 . Our results are corroborated well by spin-polarized electronic structure calculations with density functional theory and X-ray absorption spectroscopic data, which show peak-height change and energy shift of Co-L2,3 and Ni-L2,3 edges driven by the oxygen vacancies. These results demonstrate a new pathway of tailoring oxygen vacancies via He-ion irradiation, useful for designing new functionalities in other complex oxide thin-films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have studied an interface system for disabled and elderly people to control advanced equipments such as an assisting mainpulator. In our study, a laser pointer controlled by eye gazing is introduced as pointing device in real space. Since a computer screen is not familiar to elderly people, direct pointing to the interiors in his/her own room is considered as great benefit.We attached an eye gaze measurement device and also a laser pointer to the goggle worn by the user. Because of this design, our system can be used in any direction of the head and anywhere in the room, unlike other eye-gaze interface.In our prototype, eye gazing is measured by limbus boundary method. As the laser pointer, a laser diode is controlled by a differential gearing using two pulse motors. In the preliminary experiment, displacement of the laser spot was measured when the subjects were gazing the target point in the distance of 2m. 80% of the measured points were within 30cm from the target. This large distribution was caused by the lack of stability of measurement method. The eye gaze measurement must be improved for the practical use of our laser pointer driven by eye gazing.

Abstract

La1−xSrxMnO3 (LSMO) is well known as an efficient spin-injection electrode in ferromagnetic–organic hybrid-based organic spin valves (OSV). Herein, we examine the influence of three terminating layers of LSMO films (mixed-, MnO2-, and LaSrO- (LSO-) terminated) on the spin filter at the bottom interface of tri (8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) deposited on these substrates. Angle-dependent X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) demonstrated the presence of SrO segregation at the outermost layer for three types of LSMO films but in different amounts that might contribute to their magnetic properties. A weak surface coupling between LSMO and Alq3 was obtained through a small increase of Mn L-edge X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) but it does not vary the bulk magnetic properties of LSMO films upon Alq3 adsorption (LSMO/Alq3). The surface dipoles due to the interaction between LSMO films and Alq3 were found to be 0.5, 0.5, and 0.7 eV for the mixed-ter/Alq3, MnO2-ter/Alq3, and LSO-ter/Alq3 interfaces, respectively. Our results indicate that the segregated SrO layer plays an important role in the surface electronic and magnetic properties at LSMO/Alq3 interfaces, which contributes to a fundamental understanding of the spin injection and transport in LSMO-Alq3 hybrid-based OSV devices. Abstract

In this work a simple concept was used for a systematic search for materials with high spin polarization. It is based on two semiempirical models. First, the Slater-Pauling rule was used for estimation of the magnetic moment. This model is well supported by electronic structure calculations. The second model was found particularly for Co2 based Heusler compounds when comparing their magnetic properties. It turned out that these compounds exhibit seemingly a linear dependence of the Curie temperature as function of the magnetic moment. Stimulated by these models, Co2FeSi was revisited. The compound was investigated in detail concerning its geometrical and magnetic structure by means of x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption, and Mössbauer spectroscopies as well as high and low temperature magnetometry. The measurements revealed that it is, currently, the material with the highest magnetic moment (6uB) and Curie temperature (1100 K) in the classes of Heusler compounds as well as half-metallic ferromagnets. The experimental findings are supported by detailed electronic structure calculations.

Abstract

α-CdFe2O4stabilizes its normal spinel structure due to the covalent Cd–O bond, in which all the connections between adjacent FeO6octahedral are edge-shared, forming a typical geometrically frustrated Fe3+magnetic lattice. As the high-pressure methods were utilized, the post-spinel phase β-CdFe2O4with a CaFe2O4-type structure was synthesized at 8 GPa and 1373 K. The new polymorph has an orthorhombic structure with the space group Pnmaand an 11.5% higher density than that of its normal spinel polymorph (α-CdFe2O4) synthesized at ambient conditions. The edge-shared FeO6octahedra form zigzag S= 5/2 spin ladders along the b-axis dominating its low-dimensional magnetic properties at high temperatures and a long-range antiferromagnetic ordering with a high Néel temperature of TN1= 350 K. Further, the rearrangement of magnetic ordering was found to occur around TN2= 265 K, below which the competition of two phases or several couplings induce complex antiferromagnetic behaviors.
