Abstract

There is a mysterious twofold change in Du Châtelet's position on Newtonian attraction: from acceptance thereof as an explanatory principle in Essai sur l'optique (ca. 1738–39), to rejection in the 1740 Institutions , and returning to acceptance again in her Commentary (1756) to Newton's Principia. In this article, I suggest that we turn to the 1742 Institutions for answers. There, Du Châtelet introduces physical explanation and maintains that we can appeal to certain physical qualities (such as attraction) for explanatory force. Using this case study, I argue that the scholarship will benefit greatly from turning to the 1742 edition going forward. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) is a natural product commonly used in food preservation and pharmaceutical applications. Toxoplasmosis, caused by the protozoan pathogen Toxoplasma gondii, is prevalent globally while the impact of AITC on toxoplasmosis is unclear. We explored the effect of AITC on acute toxoplasmosis. We infected C57BL/6 mice with T. gondii type I RH strain following AITC administration. On the 4th day after infection, which corresponds to the initial stage of infection, we collected serum for the determination of inflammatory cytokine levels. The mice serum of the AITC-administered group contained significantly lower levels of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, interferon-gamma, interleukin (IL)-23 subunit p19, IL-4, IL-6, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1. The lifespan of the mice in the AITC-administered group was significantly reduced. In vitro experiments showed that AITC promoted the proliferation of intracellular T. gondii accompanied by the inhibition of IL-4, IL-1β, and IL-6 production in RAW264.7 macrophages. Our results showed that AITC facilitated T. gondii infection in the early stage by inhibiting the production of several inflammatory cytokines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

236. Double Coupled Canonical Polyadic Decomposition for Joint Blind Source Separation

Abstract

Joint blind source separation (J-BSS) is an emerging data-driven technique for multi-set data-fusion. In this paper, J-BSS is addressed from a tensorial perspective. We show how, by using second-order multi-set statistics in J-BSS, a specific double coupled canonical polyadic decomposition (DC-CPD) problem can be formulated. We propose an algebraic DC-CPD algorithm based on a coupled rank-1 detection mapping. This algorithm converts a possibly underdetermined DC-CPD to a set of overdetermined CPDs. The latter can be solved algebraically via a generalized eigenvalue decomposition based scheme. Therefore, this algorithm is deterministic and returns the exact solution in the noiseless case. In the noisy case, it can be used to effectively initialize optimization based DC-CPD algorithms. In addition, we obtain the determini- stic and generic uniqueness conditions for DC-CPD, which are shown to be more relaxed than their CPD counterpart. 242. A High-Gain Controllable Radiation Nulls SIGW Filtering Antenna With Improved Selectivity for 5G Millimeter-Wave Applications

Abstract

In this letter, a substrate integrated gap waveguide (SIGW) filtering antenna with controllable radiation nulls, high-gain, and improved selectivity for millimeter-wave applications is proposed. A novel coupling feeding network (CFN) topology using multiple paths based on SIGW is presented to obtain a bandpass filtering response with a center frequency of 31 GHz, which is verified by an equivalent circuit model. The sideband rolloff characteristics of this antenna can be independently tuned by the SIGW and CFN to achieve radiation nulls. Furthermore, the selectivity and gain of the antenna are improved, benefiting from SIGW's frequency cutoff property and suppression of edge electric fields, respectively. The filtering antenna is fabricated, assembled, and measured. The measured results show a suppression level of 19.6 dB, a bandwidth of 14.2%($|S_{11}|$$< -{\text{10}}$ dB), and a peak realized gain of 9.6 dBi.

243. FreePrune: An Automatic Pruning Framework Across Various Granularities Based on Training-Free Evaluation

Abstract

Network pruning is an effective technique that reduces the computational costs of networks while maintaining accuracy. However, pruning requires expert knowledge and hyperparameter tuning, such as determining the pruning rate for each layer. Automatic pruning methods address this challenge by proposing an effective training-free metric to quickly evaluate the pruned network without fine-tuning. However, most existing automatic pruning methods only investigate a certain pruning granularity, and it remains unclear whether metrics benefit automatic pruning at different granularities. Neural architecture search also studies training-free metrics to accelerate network generation. Nevertheless, whether they apply to pruning needs further investigation. In this study, we first systematically analyze various advanced training-free metrics for various granularities in pruning, and then we investigate the correlation between the training-free metric score and the after-fine-tuned model accuracy. Based on the analysis, we proposed FreePrune score, a more general metric compatible with all pruning granularities. Aiming at generating high-quality pruned networks and unleashing the power of FreePrune score, we further propose FreePrune, an automatic framework that can rapidly generate and evaluate the candidate networks, leading to a final pruned network with both high accuracy and pruning rate. Experiments show that our method achieves high correlation on various pruning granularities and comprehensively improves the accuracy.
