Abstract

In the scenario where autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) carry out tasks, it is necessary to reliably estimate underwater-moving-target positioning. While cameras often give low-precision visibility in a limited field of view, the forward-looking sonar is still an attractive method for underwater sensing, which is especially effective for long-range tracking. This paper describes an online processing framework based on forward-looking-sonar (FLS) images, and presents a novel tracking approach based on a Gaussian particle filter (GPF) to resolve persistent multiple-target tracking in cluttered environments. First, the character of acoustic-vision images is considered, and methods of median filtering and region-growing segmentation were modified to improve image-processing results. Second, a generalized regression neural network was adopted to evaluate multiple features of target regions, and a representation of feature subsets was created to improve tracking performance. Thus, an adaptive fusion strategy is introduced to integrate feature cues into the observation model, and the complete procedure of underwater target tracking based on GPF is displayed. Results obtained on a real acoustic-vision AUV platform during sea trials are shown and discussed. These showed that the proposed method is feasible and effective in tracking targets in complex underwater environments.

Abstract

Gaseous reactive nitrogen (Nr) emissions from agricultural soils to the atmosphere constitute an integral part of global N cycle, directly or indirectly causing climate change impacts. The extensive use of N fertilizer in crop production will compromise our efforts to reduce agricultural Nr emissions in China. A national inventory of fertilizer N‐induced gaseous Nr emissions from croplands in China remains to be developed to reveal its role in shaping climate change. Here we present a data‐driven estimate of fertilizer N‐induced soil Nr emissions based on regional and crop‐specific emission factors (EFs) compiled from 379 manipulative studies. In China, agricultural soil Nr emissions from the use of synthetic N fertilizer and manure in 2018 are estimated to be 3.81 and 0.73 Tg N yr−1, with a combined contribution of 23%, 20% and 15% to the global agricultural emission total of ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO), respectively. Over the past three decades, NH3 volatilization from croplands has experienced a shift from a rapid increase to a decline trend, whereas N2O and NO emissions always maintain a strong growth momentum due to a robust and continuous rise of EFs. Regionally, croplands in Central south (1.51 Tg N yr−1) and East (0.99 Tg N yr−1) of China exhibit as hotspots of soil Nr emissions. In terms of crop‐specific emissions, rice, maize and vegetable show as three leading Nr emitters, together accounting for 61% of synthetic N fertilizer‐induced Nr emissions from croplands. The global warming effect derived from cropland N2O emissions in China was found to dominate over the local cooling effects of NH3 and NO emissions. Our established regional and crop‐specific EFs for gaseous Nr forms provide a new benchmark for constraining the IPCC Tier 1 default EF values. The spatio‐temporal insight into soil Nr emission data from N fertilizer application in our estimate is expected to advance our efforts towards more accurate global or regional cropland Nr emission inventories and effective mitigation strategies. Abstract

A novel dew point evaporative cooling tower (DPECT) based on M-cycle was constructed and its cooling performance such as outlet water temperature, precooled air temperature and wet bulb effectiveness were experimentally investigated. The impact of different inlet conditions, such as arrangement methods of fills (vertical or horizontal arrangement of tubes), air-to-water ratio, inlet air conditions (dry bulb temperature and relative humidity) and inlet water temperature were also examined. Results showed that the wet bulb effectiveness of tubes that vertically arranged in DPECT was up to 0.97, which was 5% higher than that horizontally displaced, indicating that the vertical arrangement of tubes was recommended for engineering application. Moreover, it is recommended that the air-to-water ratio should be around 1.26. Under the condition of dry bulb temperature 30 °C, 30% relative humidity and inlet water temperature 30 °C, the DPECT can achieve wet bulb effectiveness of up to 1.10. It was confirmed that the novel DPECT could reduce the outlet water temperature below the wet bulb temperature of ambient air. Based on the experimental study, a feasible modification scheme to traditional industrial cooling tower was proposed. The study confirmed high practical potential of using M-Cycle in water cooling applications.

Abstract

Compactifications of 6d N=(1,0) SCFTs give rise to new 4d N=1 SCFTs and shed light on interesting dualities between such theories. In this paper we continue exploring this line of research by extending the class of compactified 6d theories to the D-type case. The simplest such 6d theory arises from D5 branes probing D-type singularities. Equivalently, this theory can be obtained from an F-theory compactification using "-2"-curves intersecting according to a D-type quiver. Our approach is two-fold. We start by compactifying the 6d SCFT on a Riemann surface and compute the central charges of the resulting 4d theory by integrating the 6d anomaly polynomial over the Riemann surface. As a second step, in order to find candidate 4d UV Lagrangians, there is an intermediate 5d theory that serves to construct 4d domain walls. These can be used as building blocks to obtain torus compactifications. In contrast to the A-type case, the vanishing of anomalies in the 4d theory turns out to be very restrictive and constraints the choices of gauge nodes and matter content severely. As a consequence, in this paper one has to resort to non-maximal boundary conditions for the 4d domain walls. 248. Annual NO and N2O emissions under different fertilisation regimes from a greenhouse vegetable cropping system in subtropical China

Abstract

Context Overuse of N fertiliser in vegetable cropping systems is known to release of nitric and nitrous oxide to the atmosphere in China. Optimisation of N fertilisation regimes has the potential to mitigate NO and N2 O emissions from these N-rich systems. Aims We investigated the effects of different N fertilisation regimes on NO and N2 O emissions, and vegetable yields, with particular efforts to estimate annual direct emission factors of NO and N2 O under different N fertilisation regimes in greenhouse vegetable fields. Methods Annual NO and N2 O fluxes were taken simultaneously using the static chamber-based method from a greenhouse vegetable system in south-east China with four N fertiliser treatments: (1) no N fertiliser (control); (2) chemical N fertiliser application (CF); (3) organic N fertiliser application (OF); and (4) organic-chemical mixed N fertiliser application (MF). Key results N fertilisers significantly increased NO and N2 O emissions. Direct emission factors of N fertiliser for NO and N2 O were the largest for MF, with an average of 0.99% and 0.67%, respectively. Vegetable yields were only significantly enhanced under OF treatment. Conclusions Relative to the use of chemical N fertiliser, the application of organic-chemical mixed N fertiliser showed not to be effective for mitigating NO and N2 O emissions. Instead, sole application of organic N fertiliser was a viable option to enhance vegetable yields but without increasing NO and N2 O emissions in greenhouse vegetable systems. Implications Substituting the use of chemical N fertiliser with organic N fertiliser input could benefitvegetable production but without stimulating NO and N2 O emissions from vegetable cropping systems in sub-tropical China.

Abstract

In this study, we mainly focus on the structural morphology and inter-atomic bonding state of tribofilms resulting from a highly-hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) film in order to ascertain the underlying mechanisms for its superlubric behavior (i.e., less than 0.01 friction coefficient). Specifically, we achieved superlubricity (i.e., friction coefficients of down to 0.003) with this film in dry nitrogen and argon atmospheres especially when the tribo-pair is made of an a-C:H coated Si disk sliding against an a-C:H coated steel ball, while the a-C:H coated disk against uncoated ball does not provide superlubricity. We also found that the state of superlubricity is more stable in argon than in nitrogen and the formation of a smooth and uniformly-thick carbonaceous tribofilm appears to be one of the key factors for the realization of such superlubricity. Besides, the interfacial morphology of sliding test pairs and the atomic-scale bond structure of the carbon-based tribofilms also play an important role in the observed superlubric behavior of a-C:H films. Using Raman spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy, we have compared the structural differences of the tribofilms produced on bare and a-C:H coated steel balls. For the a-C:H coated ball as mating material which provided superlow friction in argon, structural morphology of the tribofilm was similar or comparable to that of the original a-C:H coating; while for the bare steel ball, the sp2-bonded C fraction in the tribofilm increased and a fingerprint-like nanocrystalline structure was detected by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). We also calculated the shear stresses for different tribofilms, and established a relationship between the magnitude of the shear stresses and the extent of sp3-sp2 phase transformation.
