Electrochemical CO2 reduction holds promise for achieving carbon cycling and energy storage. The energy efficiency is a critical metric for the widespread application of this technology. However, few researchers have focused on improving energy efficiency from a system perspective. Here, we analyzed the factors contributing to voltage elevation in the reaction system and proposed a system based on the membrane reactor and the non-noble metal anode. This system achieves a low electrolysis cell voltage while simultaneously prohibiting competitive reactions, thereby enhancing the selectivity and productivity of multicarbon products. The simulation and theoretical calculations reveal that this result is attributed to the reduced film between the ion exchange membrane and cathode in the optimized structure, which increases the local pH and inhibits the hydrogen evolution reaction. Specifically, an energy efficiency of 38.94% for multicarbon products, accompanied by a partial current density of 125.36 mA cm−2, has been achieved. Notably, the energy efficiency of ethylene reaches a substantial 23.65%. When coupling the III–V solar cell with the optimized MEA reactor, a remarkable solar-to-multicarbon energy efficiency of 10.88% with over 100 mA cm−2 was obtained, exceeding most previously reported studies. The solar-to-ethylene and overall solar-to-fuel reach 6.9% and 14.17%, respectively. IncX3 plasmids carrying the New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-encoding gene, blaNDM-5, are rapidly spreading globally in both humans and animals. Given that carbapenems are listed on the WHO AWaRe watch group and are prohibited for use in animals, the drivers for the successful dissemination of Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) carrying blaNDM-5-IncX3 plasmids still remain unknown. We observe that E. coli carrying blaNDM-5-IncX3 can persist in chicken intestines either under the administration of amoxicillin, one of the largest veterinary β-lactams used in livestock, or without any antibiotic pressure. We therefore characterise the blaNDM-5-IncX3 plasmid and identify a transcription regulator, VirBR, that binds to the promoter of the regulator gene actX enhancing the transcription of Type IV secretion systems (T4SS); thereby, promoting conjugation of IncX3 plasmids, increasing pili adhesion capacity and enhancing the colonisation of blaNDM-5-IncX3 transconjugants in animal digestive tracts. Our mechanistic and in-vivo studies identify VirBR as a major factor in the successful spread of blaNDM-5-IncX3 across one-health AMR sectors. Furthermore, VirBR enhances the plasmid conjugation and T4SS expression by the presence of copper and zinc ions, thereby having profound ramifications on the use of universal animal feeds. Carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli, carrying blaNDM-5-IncX3 plasmids, can persist in chickens either under the presence of amoxicillin or without any antibiotic. Xinjiang cotton is characterized by high-density planting, which easily leads to competition between the source and sink, the shading of leaves and reproductive organs, and yield reduction. Balancing the relationship between source and sink can promote high and stable cotton yield. In this study, field experiments were conducted by combining the exogenous application of brassinosteroid with a reduction in leaf source to study their effects on the physiological and yield attributes of cotton. The results indicate that brassinosteroid application increased the yield, with a maximum yield increase of 6.3%. The number of bolls per plant increased by 1.3 nos. The photosynthetic rate and dry matter accumulation were enhanced, and the proportion of reproductive organs in the dry matter increased by >4%. Under the reduced leaf source, brassinosteroid application increased the number of new leaves by 20%, delayed the shedding of reproductive organs by 5–10 days, and reduced the average shedding rate by 8.9%. Additionally, the number of bolls increased in the middle and upper parts and at the edge of the plant. The number of bolls increased by 19.4% on the 4th–8th fruiting branches and 60.7% at the edge. Under leaf reduction treatment, brassinosteroid application could generally increase yield. After brassinosteroid application and removing half the leaves of fruiting branches and all leaves of the vegetive branches, the yield was higher than that of the control. Thus, brassinosteroid application could improve the efficiency of the leaf source and promote dry matter accumulation in sinks. Moreover, it could optimize boll distribution and increase yield by reducing reproductive organ shedding. Under the high-density planting of cotton in Xinjiang, leaf source is a slight surplus, and a moderate reduction in plant density is conducive to increasing yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Addiction is thought to be a maladaptive form of learning and memory caused by drug-evoked aberrant synaptic plasticity. We previously showed that alcohol facilitates synaptic plasticity in the dorsomedial striatum (DMS), a brain region that drives goal-directed behaviors. The majority of DMS cells are medium spiny neurons (MSNs) that express dopamine D1 receptors (D1Rs) or D2 receptors (D2Rs), which drive "Go" or "No-Go" behaviors, respectively. Here, we report that alcohol induces cell type-specific synaptic and structural plasticity in the DMS. Using mice that express a fluorescence marker to visualize D1R or D2R MSNs, we show that repeated cycles of systemic administration of alcohol or alcohol consumption induces a long-lasting increase in AMPAR activity specifically in DMS D1R but not in D2R MSNs. Importantly, we report that alcohol consumption increases the complexity of dendritic branching and the density of mature mushroom-shaped spines selectively in DMS D1R MSNs. Finally, we found that blockade of D1R but not D2R activity in the DMS attenuates alcohol consumption. Together, these data suggest that alcohol intake produces profound functional and structural plasticity events in a subpopulation of neurons in the DMS that control reinforcement-related learning.Significance statementAlcohol addiction is considered maladaptive learning and memory processes. Here we unraveled a long-lasting cellular mechanism that may contribute to the memory of alcohol-seeking behaviors. Specifically, we found that alcohol consumption produces a long-lasting enhancement of channel activity and persistent alterations of neuronal morphology in a part of the brain (DMS) that controls alcohol-drinking behaviors. Furthermore, we show that these alterations occur only in a subpopulation of neurons that positively control reward and reinforcement of drugs of abuse. Finally, we report that blocking the activity of this neuronal population reduces alcohol intake. As such synaptic and structural changes are the cellular hallmarks of learning and memory, and these neuroadaptations may drive the development of pathological heavy alcohol consumption.
