Abstract

PbTiO3 is a ferroelectric perovskite with a tetragonal structure at room temperature. It is extensively studied with different substitutions to obtain different polar phases and tunable piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties. One strategy is substitution on the Pb-site with Sr, within the (Pb,Sr)TiO3 solid solution, leading to a reduction in unit cell tetragonality, reaching cubic structure at room temperature for x=0.5 [Xing2003]. Controlling the Sr-content and thereby the structure gives the possibility to tune the electrical properties including reducing the Curie temperature, but also to stabilize a-domains depicting interesting nanoscale switching phenomena when grown as thin films [Matzen2014]. Here, we focus on presenting our work on epitaxial (Pb,Sr)TiO3 films synthesized by liquid phase epitaxy. This technique is applied for growing complex oxides on single crystalline substrates using a supersaturated solution comprising the desired oxide components of the film and a fitting solvent. Since it is a near thermodynamic equilibrium technique and the growth temperature is considerably lower than for bulk crystal growth, the defect concentration is often very low. By applying liquid phase epitaxy we have successfully grown films of Pb1-xSrxTiO3, with nominal compositions of x=0, 0.33, 0.39, and 0.43, on (100) SrTiO3 substrates. Energy dispersive X-ray measurements performed on selected films reveal an increase in the Sr-content for each nominally increase of Sr in the growth solution. Structural and spectroscopic investigations from X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy at room temperature reveal all the investigated films are free of detectable impurities and possess tetragonal structure, with stable domain microscale patterning. In addition, for films with increasing Sr-content, the tetragonality decreases accordingly. These results confirm that we are able to control the composition and structure of the films by adapting the nominal composition of our growth solution. We will present and discuss the synthesisparameters applied for growth of the (Pb,Sr)TiO3 films by liquid phase epitaxy and the challenges encountered in relation to the growth. Structural and phononic fingerprints and domain patterning from X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy will be presented as well as high temperature dependent studies, where we investigate the phase transitions.Our work underlines the successful growth of high crystalline quality films from the (Pb,Sr)TiO3 family by liquid phase epitaxy. Abstract

Ferroelectric epitaxial films of Pb1−xSrx TiO3 (PST) with nominal compositions of x = 0, 0.33, 0.39, and 0.43, supported by (100) SrTiO3 (STO) substrates, have been successfully grown by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE). Energy dispersive X-ray measurements performed on selected films reveal an increase in the Sr-content for each nominal increase in the growth solution. Structural and spectroscopic investigations, from X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, unveil that all of the PST films possess a tetragonal structure at room temperature, and with increasing Sr-content, the tetragonality and Curie temperature decrease accordingly with values approaching those of reference bulk compound materials. These results confirm we achieved full control of the composition, structure, and transition temperature of the ferroelectric films, by adapting the nominal composition of the LPE growth solution, performing epitaxial growth while maintaining the bulk-like properties. Finally, using piezoresponse force microscopy, various nanoscale polar domain configurations for the PST epitaxial films were disclosed. This indicates that films having a higher Sr content can have polar domain configurations compatible with different a/c and c nanodomains. This work underlines the usefulness of the LPE method for controlling tetragonal ferroelectric PST film growth, in order to tune the nanoscale polarisation landscape in films having bulk-like structures and ferroelectric transition temperatures. This opens a path to new investigations fully exploiting the combined advantages of multiple nanoscale electrical boundary configurations within bulk-like ferroelectric films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective The present study aimed to investigate progranulin autoantibodies in systemic sclerosis and autoimmune connective tissue disorders. Progranulin is a physiologic tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antagonist. Progranulin antibodies decrease progranulin levels. Methods Serum samples of 123 patients with systemic sclerosis and various autoimmune connective tissue disorders (Sjoegren's syndrome [SjS], mixed connective tissue disorder, polymyositis [PM] and dermatomyositis [DM], antiphospholipid syndrome [APLS], and undifferentiated connective tissue disease [UCTD]) were tested for progranulin antibodies using enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Results Progranulin antibodies were found in 34 of 123 (27.6%) patients at least once during their disease. In detail, 2 of 8 (25%) patients with limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis, 10 of 31 (32.3%) patients with diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis, 9 of 22 (40.9%) patients with SjS, 1 of 3 (33.33%) patients with mixed connective tissue disease, 4 of 33 (12.1%) patients with DM or PM, 6 of 15 (40%) patients with APLS, and 2 of 11 (18.2%) patients with UCTD were positive for progranulin antibodies during the course of disease. Conclusions Progranulin antibodies are frequently present in patients with systemic sclerosis and other autoimmune connective tissue disorders. Despite the lack of specificity for a given autoimmune disease, progranulin antibodies might not only indicate a potential subtype but also play a pathogenic role in patients with autoimmune connective disorders. Given the important role of TNF‐α in inflammatory processes in autoimmune connective tissue disorders, progranulin antibodies might support the proinflammatory environment by neutralizing the TNF blocker progranulin.

Abstract

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a generalized disease of the connective tissue, arterioles, and microvessels, characterized by the appearance of fibrosis and vascular obliteration. There are two main phenotypical forms of SSc: a diffuse cutaneous form that extends towards the proximal region of the limbs and/or torso, and a limited cutaneous form where the cutaneous sclerosis only affects the extremities of the limbs (without passing beyond the elbows and knees). There also exists in less than 10% of cases forms that never involve the skin. This is called SSc sine scleroderma. The prognosis depends essentially on the occurrence of visceral damage and more particularly interstitial lung disease (which is sometimes severe), pulmonary arterial hypertension, or primary cardiac damage, which represent the three commonest causes of mortality in SSc. Another type of involvement with poor prognosis, scleroderma renal crisis, is rare (less than 5% of cases). Cutaneous extension is also an important parameter, with the diffuse cutaneous forms having less favorable prognosis.

Abstract

Objective: Silica is one of the strongest environmental substances linked with autoimmunity. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and renal limited vasculitis (RLV) in a French northeast region, and their geospatial association with quarries. Methods: Potential ANCA-Associated Vasculitis (AAV) cases were identified using three sources: hospital records, immunology laboratories and the National Health Insurance System. Patients who resided in Alsace on January 1, 2016 and fulfilled ACR AAV criteria or Chapel Hill Consensus Conference 2012 definition were included. Incomplete case ascertainment was corrected using capture-recapture analysis. The spatial association between the number of cases and quarries in each administrative entity was assessed using geographical weighted regression (GWR). Results: From 910 potential AAV cases, we identified 185 patients meeting inclusion criteria: 120 GPA, 35 MPA, 30 RLV. The number of cases missed by any source was 6.4 (95%CI 3.6-11.5). Accordingly, the 2016 estimated prevalence in Alsace was 65.5 cases per million inhabitants (95%CI 47.3-93.0) for GPA, 19.1 (95%CI 11.3-34.3) for MPA, and 16.8 (95%CI 8.7-35.2) for RLV. The risk of AAV was significantly increased in communes with quarries (OR: 2.51 [95%CI: 1.66-3.80]) and GWR revealed a significant spatial association between quarries and GPA cases (p = 0.039), and, regarding ANCA serotype, between quarries and both PR3-AAV (p = 0.04) and MPO-AAV (p = 0.03)." Conclusion: In a region with a high density of quarries, the spatial association of AAV with quarries supports the role of silica as a specific environmental factor.

Abstract

X-ray detector systems are powerful tools: in combination with tomographic methods they provide volumetric data of samples in a non-destructive manner which is of high interest for, e.g., biology, medicine or materials research. The detector able to provide images with submicrometer spatial resolution frequently consists of a scintillator screen, light microscopy optics and a digital camera. Here, the scintillator converts the X-rays into a visible light image which is projected onto the camera by the light optics. In order to perform high resolution imaging Single Crystal Film (SCF) scintillators 1 [micro]m to 30 [micro]m thin are required due to the limited depth of focus of the microscopy optics. Thin SCFs can be obtained via liquid phase epitaxy (LPE). A drawback is that a detector working with SCFs suffers from low efficiency (2% at 50 keV) owing to their limited thickness. The detective quantum efficiency (DQE) is here mainly limited by the low absorption of X-rays and the light yield in the thin scintillator layer. Performances, i.e absorption, light yield, afterglow of operational systems at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) using YAG:Ce ([Y.sub.3] [Al.sub.5] [O.sub.12] :Ce), LAG:Eu ([Lu.sub.3] [Al.sub.5] [O.sub.12]:Eu) and GGG:Eu ([Gd.sub.3] [Ga.sub.5] [O.sub.12] : Eu) scintillators [1] will be presented and compared to new LSO:Tb ([Lu.sub.2]Si[O.sub.5]:Tb) scintillators developed in the framework of an European project [2], [3]. A new concept to improve the efficiency of detection in the 20 keV - 40 keV energy range with 1 [micro]m spatial resolution will be presented. This concept based on multilayer scintillators is realised by the LPE process as well. First results will be illustrated with X-ray images and will demonstrate the absorption efficiency improvement of the X-ray detector. The expected performance is 7 times better than the LAG-based scintillators. Abstract

We have performed the ab initio calculation of the undoped and doped molecules bis (ethylenedithio) tetraselenafulvalene (BETS). Carbone (C) atoms have been substituted by Boron (B) to investigate their effects on the electronic structure and nonlinear optical, optoelectronic, and thermodynamic properties of BETS molecule. The RHF and hybrid density functional theories (WB97XD, B3PW91, and B3LYP) methods were applied, using the cc-pVDZ basis set. We found that the energy gap (Egap) of the doped molecules are respectively 2.476 eV and 2.569 eV for C8B2H8S4Se4 and C7B3H8S4Se4 with B3LYP/cc-pVDZ basis set, lower than one of the undoped molecule (3.316 eV). The significant increase values of polarizability (˂α˃) and first order hyperpolarizability (β) of the doped compounds, especially in C8B2H8S4Se4 (< α > = 4.5315 × 10−23 esu, β = 22,672.27 × 10−33 esu and < α > = 4.518 × 10−23 esu, β = 23,657.43 × 10−33 esu respectively for B3LYP and B3PW91) compared to those of the undoped molecule (< α > = 4.3602 × 10−23 esu, β = 1290.38 × 10−33 esu, and < α > = 4.518 × 10−23 esu) show that the new molecules have a good nonlinear optical property. Objectives: To evaluate (1) the association between nailfold capillaroscopy pattern and 5-year risk for incident interstitial lung disease and (2) the association between transition in nailfold capillaroscopy pattern and risk of incident interstitial lung disease.Methods: Data of adult patients from the EUSTAR database fulfilling the ACR-EULAR criteria with a disease duration ⩽5 years, having a scleroderma pattern at nailfold capillaroscopy with high-resolution computed tomography confirmed absence of interstitial lung disease (i.e. baseline) was used. Interstitial lung disease-free survival was assessed for up to 5 years of follow-up with a Cox proportional hazards model stratified on nailfold capillaroscopy pattern at baseline. The association of annual transition in nailfold capillaroscopy pattern on the risk to develop interstitial lung disease was assessed with a mixed logistic regression analysis.Results: Out of 771 eligible patients, 283 (37%) had an early pattern, 377 (49%) had an active pattern, and 111 (14%) had a late pattern. The Cox proportional hazard model including the identified confounders did not show an association between severity of nailfold capillaroscopy pattern at baseline and increased risk for interstitial lung disease during 5-year follow-up (hazard ratio (95 confidence interval; p value): 1.09 (0.86–1.39; 0.47)). The mixed logistic regression analysis revealed an increased annual risk for incident interstitial lung disease with increasing severity of capillaroscopic pattern (odds ratio (95% confidence interval); p value 3.76 (1.99–7.11; <0.01)).Conclusion: Our study shows that worsening of nailfold capillaroscopy has a strong association with an increased annual risk to develop interstitial lung disease. Of note, a worse scleroderma pattern at nailfold capillaroscopy is not associated with the long-term risk to develop interstitial lung disease.

Abstract

Objective To report the association of JC virus infection of the brain (progressive multifocal encephalopathy [PML]) during the course of sarcoidosis and the challenging balance between immune reconstitution under targeted cytokine interleukin 7 (IL7) therapy for PML and immunosuppression for sarcoidosis. Methods Original case report including deep sequencing (whole-exome sequencing) to exclude a primary immunodeficiency (PID) and review of the literature of cases of PML and sarcoidosis. Results We report and discuss here a challenging case of immune reconstitution with IL7 therapy for PML in sarcoidosis in a patient without evidence for underling PID or previous immunosuppressive therapy. Conclusions New targeted therapies in immunology and infectiology open the doors of more specific and more specialized therapies for patients with immunodeficiencies, autoimmune diseases, or cancers. However, before instauration of these treatments, the risk of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome and potential exacerbation of an underlying disease must be considered. It is particularly true in case of autoimmune disease such as sarcoidosis or lupus.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to provide high-level care for a large number of patients with COVID-19 has affected resourcing for, and limited the routine care of, all other conditions. The impact of this health emergency is particularly relevant in the rare connective tissue diseases (rCTDs) communities, as discussed in this Perspective article by the multi-stakeholder European Reference Network on Rare and Complex Connective Tissue and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ERN ReCONNET). The clinical, organizational and health economic challenges faced by health-care providers, institutions, patients and their families during the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak have demonstrated the importance of ensuring continuity of care in the management of rCTDs, including adequate diagnostics and monitoring protocols, and highlighted the need for a structured emergency strategy. The vulnerability of patients with rCTDs needs to be taken into account when planning future health policies, in preparation for not only the post-COVID era, but also any possible new health emergencies.
