Abstract

Although German companies lost their foreign assets after World War II, they returned quickly to the world market after 1945. While internationalisation during the post-war boom was mainly based on exports, foreign direct investment (FDI) increased enormously since the late 1960s. Simultaneously, the companies remained part of the German corporate network as a typical characteristic of Rhenish capitalism. Unlike many Varieties-of-Capitalism (VoC) studies dealing with the macro-level picture of whole economies, the article reconsiders the idea that firms should be at the centre of analysis and examines the responses of four major West German producers of chemicals, pharmaceuticals and fibres to the tension between national corporate governance and increasing internationalisation. Abstract

This paper presents findings from a study carried out to contribute to the growing knowledge base within the Design for Sustainable Behaviour research field. Coffee makers, electric kettles and toasters were evaluated to explore if and why particular appliances may mediate less energy-intensive use to a greater extent than others. Eighteen participants used three appliances of the same type for two weeks each, during which the participants' use of the appliances and the resulting energy use were monitored. In addition, semi-structured interviews and online surveys were conducted to explore how the appliances' functions and overall design influenced energy use. The findings show that both specific functions and the design as a whole form the design characteristics that set preconditions for energy use. The study thus suggests that if appliances are not designed to support energy conservation holistically, there is a risk that aspects that have not been addressed will lead to more energy-intensive use. This makes it essential for designers to consider the full variety of characteristics influencing energy use. Based on the findings, design opportunities were identified and design guidelines formulated. Abstract

By the end of the economic boom in the 1960s, the oil crisis caused an enormous rise in energy prices. Chemical companies, especially, faced a huge challenge due to their dependency on oil as an energy resource and raw material. This paper explores the reaction of West German chemical corporations to the energy crises of the 1970s and their attempts to anticipate future energy crises. First, the companies tried to implement their own industrial nuclear power stations to cut costs and to become more independent from oil. Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate revised PROPELLER (RevPROP) for T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) of the prostate as a substitute for turbo spin echo (TSE).Materials and Methods: Three-Tesla MR images of 50 patients with 55 cancer-suspicious lesions were prospectively evaluated. Findings were correlated with histopathology after MRI-guided biopsy. T2 RevPROP, T2 TSE, diffusion-weighted imaging, dynamic contrast enhancement, and MR-spectroscopy were acquired. RevPROP was compared to TSE concerning PI-RADS scores, lesion size, lesion signal-intensity, lesion contrast, artefacts, and image quality.Results: There were 41 carcinomas in 55 cancer-suspicious lesions. RevPROP detected 41 of 41 carcinomas (100%) and 54 of 55 lesions (98.2%). TSE detected 39 of 41 carcinomas (95.1%) and 51 of 55 lesions (92.7%). RevPROP showed fewer artefacts and higher image quality (each p < 0.001). No differences were observed between single and overall PI-RADS scores based on RevPROP or TSE (p = 0.106 and p = 0.107). Lesion size was not different (p = 0.105). T2-signal intensity of lesions was higher and T2-contrast of lesions was lower on RevPROP (each p < 0.001).Conclusion: For prostate cancer detection RevPROP is superior to TSE with respect to motion robustness, image quality and detection rates of lesions. Therefore, RevPROP might be used as a substitute for T2WI.Key Points: • Revised PROPELLER can be used as a substitute for T2-weighted prostate imaging. • Revised PROPELLER detected more carcinomas and more suspicious lesions than TSE. • Revised PROPELLER showed fewer artefacts and better image quality compared to TSE. • There were no significant differences in PI-RADS scores between revised PROPELLER and TSE. • The lower T2-contrast of revised PROPELLER did not impair its diagnostic quality. Abstract

Thermal weed control with flame-scarfing, hot water/superheated steam, and hot foam devices is limited regarding selective application. This is especially disadvantageous for weed control in crops, as the thermal damage has a spatial effect. Hence, an alternative tool is required; this might be the laser technology. During laser application, the laser parameters can be adjusted on-line to the recognized weed situation.
