We study under which circumstances firms choose to install boards and their roles in a historical setting in which neither boards nor their duties are mandated by law. Boards arise in firms with large, heterogeneous shareholder bases. We propose that an important role of boards is to mediate between heterogeneous shareholders with divergent interests. Voting restrictions are common and ensure that boards are representative and not captured by large blockholders. Boards are given significant powers to both mediate and monitor management, and these roles are intrinsically linked. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dengue is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases in the world. Rapid, accurate and scalable diagnostics are key to patient management and epidemiological surveillance of the dengue virus (DENV), however current technologies do not match required clinical sensitivity and specificity or rely on large laboratory equipment. In this work, we report the translation of our smartphone-connected handheld Lab-on-Chip (LoC) platform for the quantitative detection of two dengue serotypes. At its core, the approach relies on the combination of Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) microchip technology to integrate an array of 78 × 56 potentiometric sensors, and a label-free reverse-transcriptase loop mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay. The platform communicates to a smartphone app which synchronises results in real time with a secure cloud server hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS) for epidemiological surveillance. The assay on our LoC platform (RT-eLAMP) was shown to match performance on a gold-standard fluorescence-based real-time instrument (RT-qLAMP) with synthetic DENV-1 and DENV-2 RNA and extracted RNA from 9 DENV-2 clinical isolates, achieving quantitative detection in under 15 min. To validate the portability of the platform and the geo-tagging capabilities, we led our study in the laboratories at Imperial College London, UK, and Kaohsiung Medical Hospital, Taiwan. This approach carries high potential for application in low resource settings at the point of care (PoC).

Il presente saggio s’inserisce nel filone degli studi sulla discriminazione di genere, in particolare focalizza l’attenzione su alcune dissimmetrie morfologiche. Lo studio, basato sull’utilizzo di dizionari cartacei e digitali, si propone di dimostrare come l’italiano, lingua che ha una potente risorsa morfologica, talvolta, soprattutto per la denominazioni di alcune professioni – ingegnera, architetta, avvocata e giudice – incorra in blocchi di regole sicuramente non dovuti alla grammatica, ma dipendenti da una visione del mondo declinata al maschile (non di rado radicata ed introiettata dalle stesse donne) e dal contesto extralinguistico che ne impediscono la normale applicazione. Ai fini della presente ricerca, per un’indagine che tenga conto della variazione nella frequenza d’uso dei nomi delle professioni oggetto d’analisi in un arco temporale abbastanza ampio, dal 1800 al 2019, è stato utilizzato Ngram Viewer, un programma di Google, che consente di fare analisi su corpora di testi di numerose lingue, compresa l’italiana. Diachronic morphology and gender equality This paper is part of the study of gender discrimination, in particular focused on some morphological dissymmetries. The study, based on the use of printed and electronic dictionaries, aims to demonstrate how Italian, a language that has a powerful morphological resource, sometimes especially for the denominations of certain occupations – engineer, architect, lawyer and judge – encounters rule blocks certainly not due to grammar, but dependent on a male-oriented worldview (not infrequently rooted and introjected by women themselves) and by the extralinguistic context that impedes normal application. For the purposes of this study, for a survey that takes into account the change in the frequency of use of the names of the professions under analysis in a fairly wide time span- from 1800 to 2019- Ngram Viewer, a Google program, was used to analyze corpora of texts of many languages, including Italian.

The aim of this work is to investigate the degradation of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by means of impedance spectroscopy, a highly sensitive characterization technique used to establish the electrical response of a device in a nondestructive manner. In this paper, PSCs with two different electron transport layers (ETLs) are studied: PSCs with undoped SnO2 as an ETL are compared to PSCs with an ETL composed of graphene-doped SnO2 (G-SnO2). Experimental data were collected immediately after fabrication and after one week, monitoring both impedance spectroscopy and dark current-voltage (I-V) curves. It was observed that, in the case of the undoped PSCs, the degradation of the solar cells affected both the AC behavior of the devices, modifying the associated Nyquist plots, and the DC behavior, observable from the dark I-V measurements. Conversely, the solar cells with G-SnO2 showed no variation. Considering the Nyquist plots, a quantitative analysis was performed by comparing the parameters of a proper equivalent circuit model. The results were coherent with those achieved in the DC analysis, thus proving that the analysis of impedance spectra, supported with dark I-V curves, allows one to gain a deeper knowledge of the degradation phenomena of perovskite solar cells. This study opens the door for further improvement of these devices through a better understanding of their electrical behavior.

The Gravity Force to which living beings are subjected on Earth rules the functionality of most biological processes in many tissues. It has been reported that a situation of Microgravity (such as that occurring in space) causes negative effects on living beings. Astronauts returning from space shuttle missions or from the International Space Station have been diagnosed with various health problems, such as bone demineralization, muscle atrophy, cardiovascular deconditioning, and vestibular and sensory imbalance, including impaired visual acuity, altered metabolic and nutritional status, and immune system dysregulation. Microgravity has profound effects also on reproductive functions. Female astronauts, in fact, suppress their cycles during space travels, and effects at the cellular level in the early embryo development and on female gamete maturation have also been observed. The opportunities to use space flights to study the effects of gravity variations are limited because of the high costs and lack of repeatability of the experiments. For these reasons, the use of microgravity simulators for studying, at the cellular level, the effects, such as those, obtained during/after a spatial trip, are developed to confirm that these models can be used in the study of body responses under conditions different from those found in a unitary Gravity environment (1 g). In view of this, this study aimed to investigate in vitro the effects of simulated microgravity on the ultrastructural features of human metaphase II oocytes using a Random Positioning Machine (RPM). We demonstrated for the first time, by Transmission Electron Microscopy analysis, that microgravity might compromise oocyte quality by affecting not only the localization of mitochondria and cortical granules due to a possible alteration of the cytoskeleton but also the function of mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum since in RPM oocytes we observed a switch in the morphology of smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) and associated mitochondria from mitochondria-SER aggregates to mitochondria–vesicle complexes. We concluded that microgravity might negatively affect oocyte quality by interfering in vitro with the normal sequence of morphodynamic events essential for acquiring and maintaining a proper competence to fertilization in human oocytes.

Introduction Theory of Mind (ToM) is defined as the ability to understand mental states of other people. Recent studies explored its role in various psychopathological disorders, but evidence lacks on the relationship existing between specific psychopathological domains and ToM. Objectives We aimed to investigate the relationship between psychopathology of Anxiety Disorders (AD) and Theory of Mind. Methods We enrolled 35 patients admitted to the Psychiatric Unit of Careggi Hospital in Florence with diagnosis of AD. We administered them: Zung Anxiety Scale (ZSAS), Metacognition Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30), and Reading the Mind in the Eyes (RMET). Pearson’s correlation was used to assess relationships between variables. Results A significant positive correlation was detected between RMET scores and ZSAS total scores (r=0.385, p=0.022), MCQ-30 Negative Beliefs about Uncontrollability and Danger subscale (MCQ-30-Neg, r=0.407, p=0.015), and MCQ-30 Cognitive Self-Consciousness subscale (MCQ-30-CSC, r=0.349, p=0.040). Correlations between the variables in the study and Reading the mind in the eyes total scores are shown. Introduction Theory of Mind is defined as the ability to understand mental states of other people, and is notoriously impaired in patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder. A growing body of evidence suggests an impairment of Theory of Mind in several other psychopathological disorders. However, only few studies have assessed Theory of Mind in patients with Anxiety Disorders (AD), addressing only patients with Social Anxiety Disorder. Objectives We aimed to investigate the differences in Theory of Mind between patients with AD and Healthy Controls (HC). In recent years, the agrifood sector has been relevantly impacted by resource shortage, food loss and waste across the whole supply chain. This study assesses, from a life cycle perspective, the water footprint of the fruit and vegetable losses occurring within the Italian agrifood supply chain, analyzing the potential linkages between circular economy policies and water management.The study methodology consists of three consequential steps: the definition of system boundaries, the data collection from databases and reports, and the processing of said data. Based on data availability of food losses, the following food items were chosen for the analysis, representing about 60% of the Italian fruits and vegetables domestic supply: tomatoes and onions for the macro-group of vegetables; orange, lemons, apples and grapes for the macro-group of fruits.Assessing the water footprint for the six categories of products, this study found out that, although less than other products, the amount of grapes lost along the supply chain determines a very high percentage of water loss. The tomato supply chain has proved to be the most sustainable in terms of water loss, due to the low amount of water needed to cultivate tomatoes. The analysis of the Italian trade market of fruits and vegetables has shown that water losses are mainly due to imports from France and Spain, in line with the high trade volumes. Finally, a weakness of the Italian fruit and vegetable supply chain was observed in the transport phase, because in this phase large quantities of food loss are associated with large volumes of water loss.Far from being the only tool to be used in the decision-making processes, the assessment of water loss embodied in the food loss, can be useful for managing the supply chain processes of perishable foods, ensuring process yield improvements, food quality traceability and environmental impact mitigation.

Metabolic disorders, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes (T2D) and metabolic syndrome, have been implicated in breast cancer (BC) progression. In this regard, insulin has been shown to promote mitogenic and metastatic responses in BC through diverse signaling pathways. Moreover, high levels of insulin and elevated expression of its cognate receptor, namely insulin receptor (IR), have been associated with increased BC incidence, resistance to treatments and poor outcomes. Metformin (1,1-dimethylbiguanide hydrochloride) is the most commonly prescribed drug for T2D treatment worldwide. Metformin has been shown to interfere with BC cell growth. In order to provide novel insights through which metformin can elicit anti-cancer responses in BC, we performed bioinformatics analysis as well as TaqMan Gene Expression Assay, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, immunoblots, 2D and 3D proliferation assays and motility experiments. A naturally immortalized BC cell line (namely BCAHC-1) and important components of the tumor microenvironment, such as cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) derived from BC patients, were used as model systems. We found that metformin inhibits the activation of main transduction pathways, the gene expression changes and the proliferative effects induced by insulin in BCAHC-1 cells. Moreover, metformin prevented the insulin-stimulated induction of CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4), which has been involved in BC metastatic dissemination. Next, metformin suppressed the invasion of CAFs triggered through CXCR4 via insulin stimulated BCAHC-1 cells. Our findings may suggest novel transduction mechanisms involved in the inhibitory effects elicited by metformin in both BC cells and CAFs.

Current advances in molecular profiling methodologies and the accessibility of multi-omics datasets are paving the way toward a better understanding of heterogeneous diseases, including breast cancer (BC). In this regard, we sought to uncover the transcriptional changes triggered by estrogen and insulin in a primary BC cell line (BCAHC-1), which expresses the 46kDa isoform of the estrogen receptor (ER)α and the insulin receptor, as we have previously ascertained. Raw data from RNA sequencing of BCAHC-1 cells were processed by the Bcl2Fastq 2.20 version of the Illumina pipeline, while in silico analyses were performed in R Studio using the TCGA dataset. Real-time PCR, immunoblotting, ELISA and chromatin immunoprecipitation experiments were used to identify the molecular events triggered by estrogen and insulin in BCAHC-1 cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). Furthermore, migration and invasion assays allowed us to ascertain the mechanisms triggering these biological responses in the presence of the aforementioned hormone treatments. First, we determined that 17β-estradiol (E2) and insulin stimulate a peculiar IL-11 expression and IL-11 secretion in BCAHC-1 cells. Thereafter, bioinformatics analyses confirmed the up-regulation of IL-11 in ER-positive BCs, with respect to adjacent normal tissues, and its association with worse survival. Next, the involvement of IL-11 in pro-metastatic transduction signaling was established via pathway enrichment analyses. Notably, we found that the secretion of IL-11 by BCAHC-1 cells prompts an invasive phenotype of CAFs through the up-regulation of genes belonging to the extracellular matrix organization pathway, namely, the intercellular adhesion molecule 1 and integrin alpha 5. Overall, our findings indicate that IL-11 secretion by BC cells may elicit a paracrine action on the surrounding stroma and introduce invasive properties, suggesting that IL-11 could be considered a valuable target in comprehensive treatments of ER-positive BC patients.

Multicriteria decision making (MCDM) is a field that helps decision makers evaluate alternatives based on multiple criteria and encompasses scoring, distance-based, pairwise comparison, and outranking methods. Recent developments have aimed to solve specific problems and overcoming the limitations of previous methods. This paper proposes a new axial-distance-based aggregated measurement (ADAM) method, which is used in combination with the best-worst method (BWM) to evaluate agri-food circular economy (CE)-based business models (BMs) to create a more sustainable and efficient system for producing and consuming food. This paper proposes nine BMs, which were evaluated against eight criteria. The BWM method was used to obtain the criteria weights, while the ADAM method was used to obtain a final ranking of the BMs. The results indicate that a sustainable circular agri-food supply chain is a BM that can bring companies the most significant progress in business and strengthen their position in the market. We concluded that the ADAM method is effective for solving MCDM problems and that, overall, the model is an effective tool for solving the problem defined in this study. The main contributions are the development of a new MCDM method and a hybrid model, the establishment of the framework for evaluation and selection of CE-based BMs, and the identification of the most important ones.

The Four-Dimensional Data Assimilation module (FDDA) is used in combination with the WRF model for the analysis of two case studies of high tide (on 4 April 2019 and on 12 November 2019) that affected the Venice Lagoon in the recent past. The system is implemented in the perspective of an operational use for nowcasting of 10 m wind, which will be part of a numerical system aimed at the forecast of the sea level height in the Venice Lagoon. The procedure involves the assimilation of data from meteorological surface stations distributed within the Venice Lagoon and in the open northern Adriatic Sea in front of the lagoon, as well asthe radiosonde profiles available within the simulation domain. The two cases were selected considering that the real-time forecasts missed their evolution, and the sea level height was significantly underpredicted. The comparison of the simulated wind with the observations shows a fairly good agreement over short time scales (1–2 h) in both cases; hence, the WRF-FDDA system represents a promising tool and a possibly valuable support to the decision makers in case of high tide in the Venice Lagoon.
