We use the symmetry-extended Maxwell rule established by Fowler and Guest to detect states of self-stress in symmetric planar frameworks. The dimension of the space of self-stresses that are detectable in this way may be expressed in terms of the number of joints and bars that are unshifted by various symmetry operations of the framework. Therefore, this method provides an efficient tool to construct symmetric frameworks with many `fully-symmetric' states of self-stress, or with `anti-symmetric' states of self-stress. Maximizing the number of independent self-stresses of a planar framework, as well as understanding their symmetry properties, has important practical applications, for example in the design and construction of gridshells. Axion dark matter can resonantly convert to photons in the magnetosphere of neutron stars, possibly giving rise to radio signals observable on Earth. This method for the indirect detection of axion dark matter has recently received significant attention in the literature. The calculation of the radio signal is complicated by a number of effects; most importantly, the gravitational infall of the axions onto the neutron star accelerates them to semi-relativistic speed, and the neutron star magnetosphere is highly anisotropic. Both of these factors complicate the calculation of the conversion of axions to photons. In this work, we present the first fully three-dimensional calculation of the axion-photon conversion in highly magnetised anisotropic media. Depending on the axion trajectory, this calculation leads to orders-of-magnitude differences in the conversion compared to the simplified one-dimensional calculation used so far in the literature, altering the directionality of the produced photons. Using the Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC), we obtained high-resolution (R$\sim$35,000) $K$-band spectra of the four planets orbiting HR 8799. We clearly detected \water{} and CO in the atmospheres of HR 8799 c, d, and e, and tentatively detected a combination of CO and \water{} in b. These are the most challenging directly imaged exoplanets that have been observed at high spectral resolution to date when considering both their angular separations and flux ratios. We developed a forward modeling framework that allows us to jointly fit the spectra of the planets and the diffracted starlight simultaneously in a likelihood-based approach and obtained posterior probabilities on their effective temperatures, surface gravities, radial velocities, and spins. We measured $v\sin(i)$ values of $10.1^{+2.8}_{-2.7}$~km/s for HR 8799 d and $15.0^{+2.3}_{-2.6}$~km/s for HR 8799 e, and placed an upper limit of $< 14$~km/s of HR 8799 c. Under two different assumptions of their obliquities, we found tentative evidence that rotation velocity is anti-correlated with companion mass, which could indicate that magnetic braking with a circumplanetary disk at early times is less efficient at spinning down lower mass planets., Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures, Accepted to AJ

We have obtained Hubble Space Telescope (HST) coronagraphic observations of the circumstellar disk around M star TWA 7 using the STIS instrument in visible light. Together with archival observations including HST/NICMOS using the F160W filter and Very Large Telescope/SPHERE at $H$-band in polarized light, we investigate the system in scattered light. By studying this nearly face-on system using geometric disk models and Henyey--Greenstein phase functions, we report new discovery of a tertiary ring and a clump. We identify a layered architecture: three rings, a spiral, and an ${\approx}150$ au$^2$ elliptical clump. The most extended ring peaks at $28$ au, and the other components are on its outskirts. Our point source detection limit calculations demonstrate the necessity of disk modeling in imaging fainter planets. Morphologically, we witness a clockwise spiral motion, and the motion pattern is consistent with both solid body and local Keplerian; we also observe underdensity regions for the secondary ring that might result from mean motion resonance or moving shadows: both call for re-observations to determine their nature. Comparing multi-instrument observations, we obtain blue STIS-NICMOS color, STIS-SPHERE radial distribution peak difference for the tertiary ring, and high SPHERE-NICMOS polarization fraction; these aspects indicate that TWA 7 could retain small dust particles. By viewing the debris disk around M star TWA 7 at a nearly face-on vantage point, our study allows for the understanding of such disks in scattered light in both system architecture and dust property., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, ApJ accepted. HD 106906 is a young, binary stellar system, located in the Lower Centaurus Crux (LCC) group. This system is unique among discovered systems in that it contains an asymmetrical debris disk, as well as an 11 M$_{Jup}$ planet companion, at a separation of $\sim$735 AU. Only a handful of other systems are known to contain both a disk and directly imaged planet, where HD 106906 is the only one in which the planet has apparently been scattered. The debris disk is nearly edge on, and extends roughly to $>$500 AU, where previous studies with HST have shown the outer regions to have high asymmetry. To better understand the structure and composition of the disk, we have performed a deep polarimetric study of HD 106906's asymmetrical debris disk using newly obtained $H$-, $J$-, and $K1$-band polarimetric data from the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI). An empirical analysis of our data supports a disk that is asymmetrical in surface brightness and structure, where fitting an inclined ring model to the disk spine suggests that the disk may be highly eccentric ($e\gtrsim0.16$). A comparison of the disk flux with the stellar flux in each band suggests a blue color that also does not significantly vary across the disk. We discuss these results in terms of possible sources of asymmetry, where we find that dynamical interaction with the planet companion, HD 106906b, is a likely candidate., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

The dark photon is a massive hypothetical particle that interacts with the Standard Model by kinetically mixing with the visible photon. For small values of the mixing parameter, dark photons can evade cosmological bounds to be a viable dark matter candidate. Due to the similarities with the electromagnetic signals generated by axions, several bounds on dark photon signals are simply reinterpretations of historical bounds set by axion haloscopes. However, the dark photon has a property that the axion does not: an intrinsic polarisation. Due to the rotation of the Earth, accurately accounting for this polarisation is nontrivial, highly experiment-dependent, and depends upon assumptions about the dark photon's production mechanism. We show that if one does account for the DP polarisation, and the rotation of the Earth, an experiment's discovery reach can be enhanced by over an order of magnitude. We detail the strategies that would need to be taken to properly optimise a dark photon search. These include judiciously choosing the location and orientation of the experiment, as well as strategically timing any repeated measurements. Experiments located at $\pm$35$^\circ$ or $\pm$55$^\circ$ latitude, making three observations at different times of the sidereal day, can achieve a sensitivity that is fully optimised and insensitive to the dark photon's polarisation state, and hence its production mechanism. We also point out that several well-known searches for axions employ techniques for testing signals that preclude their ability to set exclusion limits on dark photons, and hence should not be reinterpreted as such., Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures. We present molecular line observations of 13CO and C18O J=3-2, CN N = 3 - 2, and CS J=7-6 lines in the protoplanetary disk around TW Hya at a high spatial resolution of ~9 au (angular resolution of 0.15''), using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array. A possible gas gap is found in the deprojected radial intensity profile of the integrated C18O line around a disk radius of ~58 au, slightly beyond the location of the au-scale dust clump at ~52 au, which resembles predictions from hydrodynamic simulations of planet-disk interaction. In addition, we construct models for the physical and chemical structure of the TW Hya disk, taking account of the dust surface density profile obtained from high spatial resolution dust continuum observations. As a result, the observed flat radial profile of the CN line intensities is reproduced due to a high dust-to-gas surface density ratio inside ~20 au. Meanwhile, the CO isotopologue line intensities trace high temperature gas and increase rapidly inside a disk radius of ~30 au. A model with either CO gas depletion or depletion of gas-phase oxygen elemental abundance is required to reproduce the relatively weak CO isotopologue line intensities observed in the outer disk, consistent with previous atomic and molecular line observations towards the TW Hya disk. {Further observations of line emission of carbon-bearing species, such as atomic carbon and HCN, with high spatial resolution would help to better constrain the distribution of elemental carbon abundance in the disk gas., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Evolved low- to intermediate-mass stars are known to shed their gaseous envelope into a large, dusty, molecule-rich circumstellar nebula which typically develops a high degree of structural complexity. Most of the large-scale, spatially correlated structures in the nebula are thought to originate from the interaction of the stellar wind with a companion. As part of the Atomium large programme, we observed the M-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star R Hydrae with ALMA. The morphology of the inner wind of R Hya, which has a known companion at ~3500 au, was determined from maps of CO and SiO obtained at high angular resolution. A map of the CO emission reveals a multi-layered structure consisting of a large elliptical feature at an angular scale of ~10'' that is oriented along the north-south axis. The wind morphology within the elliptical feature is dominated by two hollow bubbles. The bubbles are on opposite sides of the AGB star and lie along an axis with a position angle of ~115 deg. Both bubbles are offset from the central star, and their appearance in the SiO channel maps indicates that they might be shock waves travelling through the AGB wind. An estimate of the dynamical age of the bubbles yields an age of the order of 100 yr, which is in agreement with the previously proposed elapsed time since the star last underwent a thermal pulse. When the CO and SiO emission is examined on subarcsecond angular scales, there is evidence for an inclined, differentially rotating equatorial density enhancement, strongly suggesting the presence of a second nearby companion. The position angle of the major axis of this disc is ~70 deg in the plane of the sky. We tentatively estimate that a lower limit on the mass of the nearby companion is ~0.65 Msol on the basis of the highest measured speeds in the disc and the location of its inner rim at ~6 au from the AGB star., Comment: 21 pages, 23 figures

We present observations of three protoplanetary disks in visible scattered light around M-type stars in the Upper Scorpius OB association using the STIS instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope. The disks around stars 2MASS J16090075-1908526, 2MASS J16142029-1906481 and 2MASS J16123916-1859284 have all been previously detected with ALMA, and 2MASS J16123916-1859284 has never previously been imaged at scattered light wavelengths. We process our images using Reference Differential Imaging, comparing and contrasting three reduction techniques - classical subtraction, Karhunen-Loeve Image Projection and Non-Negative Matrix Factorisation, selecting the classical method as the most reliable of the three for our observations. Of the three disks, two are tentatively detected (2MASS J16142029-1906481 and 2MASS J16123916-1859284), with the third going undetected. Our two detections are shown to be consistent when varying the reference star or reduction method used, and both detections exhibit structure out to projected distances of > 200 au. Structures at these distances from the host star have never been previously detected at any wavelength for either disk, illustrating the utility of visible-wavelength observations in probing the distribution of small dust grains at large angular separations., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Objectives: Routine cancer screening is widely recognized as an effective preventive strategy to reduce cancer mortality -- the second leading cause of death in the U.S. However, cancer screening requires a complex array of tasks such as seeking up-to-date guidelines, making appointments, planning hospital visits, and communicating with health care professionals. Importantly, modern health care largely relies on technology to disseminate the latest information and administer the system. Yet, little is known about the technology-related skills that are relevant to regular cancer screening. This study examined the association between problem-solving skills in the technology-rich environment (PSTRE) and cancer screening in later life. Methods: Using 2012/2014 Program for International Assessment of Adult Competencies data, binary logistic regressions with survey weights were used to estimate the association between PSTRE and four cancer screening behaviors among the corresponding target populations aged between 45 to 74 years old (n = 1,374 for cervical screening; n = 1,373 for breast screening; n = 1,166 for prostate screening; n = 2,563 for colon screening). Results: Results showed that greater PSTRE scores (0 - 500 points) were significantly and positively associated with prostate cancer screening (OR = 1.005, p < 0.05) among men, but not with colon (men and women) or cervical or breast (women) cancer screenings. Conclusions: Improvement in PSTRE may promote specific cancer screening behaviors. Our findings inform future policy discussions and interventions that seek to improve cancer screening among a vulnerable section of older populations. Background: Online health information is underutilized among Hispanics with low English proficiency in the U.S. This study examines the association between a unique measure of general English literacy, language use, and online health information seeking among Hispanic adults. Methods: Data for Hispanics ages 25-65 (N?=?700) come from the 2012/2014 Program for International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). Binary logistic regression models were used to predict online health information seeking as a function of literacy skill scores (0-500 points) and primary language use (Spanish vs. other). Results: Literacy (Odds-Ratio?=?1.012, p?< 0.001) was a positive predictor, while speaking Spanish at home (Odds-Ratio = 0.352, p?< 0.01) was a negative predictor of online health information seeking. Conclusion: Literacy skills and language use appear to be separate contributors of online health information seeking among Hispanic adults. Practice implications: Online health information providers should be aware of literacy skills and Spanish language use as barriers to online health information seeking among Hispanics, particularly those who have both limited literacy skills and predominantly Spanish language use. The objective of this study is to examine the associations between the motivation to learn, basic skills (i.e., literacy and numeracy), and organized adult education and training (AET) participation among the middle-aged and older adults in the USA. Rapid technological advancement and globalization necessitate individuals to engage in lifelong learning to actively participate in society. However, little is known about the roles of motivation to learn and basic skills in the AET participation in the U.S. adult population. We obtained the data from the 2012/2014 Program for International Assessment of Adult Competencies restricted-use file and adults aged 50 years and older (n = 2,580) are included. Structural equation models are used to examine (1) any AET, (2) formal AET and (3) non-formal AET participation as a function of the motivation to learn latent construct, literacy, numeracy, and other covariates. Results showed that the motivation to learn, literacy and numeracy are all positive predictors of non-formal AET participation. Only motivation to learn is associated with formal AET participation. Findings from this study may inform future interventions as well as policy changes to promote specific types of organized AET programs among older adult population in the USA. We examine complex pathways that link health information seeking behavior with education and health literacy (decomposed into general literacy and numeracy), and how these pathways differ by perceived health status (need) among a nationally representative sample of Americans age 50 and older (n = 2,750). Data come from the Program for International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). Multi-group structural equation models were used to examine the use of eight health information sources (newspapers, magazines, internet, radio, TV, books, friends/family, and health professionals). Findings partially support the long-standing notion that health seeking behaviors are directly linked to educational attainment, and provide some of the first nationally representative evidence for how education functions through distinct health literacy components to shape health information seeking behaviors by health status. Findings from this moderated mediation analysis point to the importance of examining, and addressing, health literacy disparities in access to and use of health information. Context. Solar magnetic pores are, due to their concentrated magnetic fields, suitable guides for magnetoacoustic waves. Recent observations have shown that propagating energy flux in pores is subject to strong damping with height; however, the reason is still unclear. Aims. We investigate possible damping mechanisms numerically to explain the observations. Methods. We performed 2D numerical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations, starting from an equilibrium model of a single pore inspired by the observed properties. Energy was inserted into the bottom of the domain via different vertical drivers with a period of 30s. Simulations were performed with both ideal MHD and non-ideal effects. Results. While the analysis of the energy flux for ideal and non-ideal MHD simulations with a plane driver cannot reproduce the observed damping, the numerically predicted damping for a localized driver closely corresponds with the observations. The strong damping in simulations with localized driver was caused by two geometric effects, geometric spreading due to diverging field lines and lateral wave leakage., Comment: 12 pages (including appendix), 13 figures, accepted for publication by A&A

An optical gateway to convert four-level pulse amplitude modulation to quadrature phase shift keying modulation format having shaping gain was proposed for flexible intensity to phase mapping which exploits non-uniform phase noise. The power consumption of the optical modulation format conversion can save by making a DNN-based decision on the receiver side for the generated QPSK signal with non-uniform phase noise. A proof-of-principle experiment has shown that an optically geometric constellation shaped QPSK modulated signals generated from regular PAM4 signals with Gaussian-distributed noise. The shaped QPSK signal shows BER and generalized mutual information improvement by 1dB gain through the use of digital neural network signal recovery.

It has been suggested that certain antiferromagnetic topological insulators contain axion quasiparticles (AQs), and that such materials could be used to detect axion dark matter (DM). The AQ is a longitudinal antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation coupled to the electromagnetic Chern-Simons term, which, in the presence of an applied magnetic field, leads to mass mixing between the AQ and the electric field. The electromagnetic boundary conditions and transmission and reflection coefficients are computed. A model for including losses into this system is presented, and the resulting linewidth is computed. It is shown how transmission spectroscopy can be used to measure the resonant frequencies and damping coefficients of the material, and demonstrate conclusively the existence of the AQ. The dispersion relation and boundary conditions permit resonant conversion of axion DM into THz photons in a material volume that is independent of the resonant frequency, which is tuneable via an applied magnetic field. A parameter study for axion DM detection is performed, computing boost amplitudes and bandwidths using realistic material properties including loss. Massive stars die an explosive death as a core-collapse supernova (CCSN). The exact physical processes that cause the collapsing star to rebound into an explosion are not well-understood, and the key in resolving this issue may lie in the measurement of the shape of CCSNe ejecta. Spectropolarimetry is the only way to perform this measurement for CCSNe outside of the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds. We present an infrared (IR) spectropolarimetric detection of a CCSN, enabled by the new highly sensitive WIRC+Pol instrument at Palomar Observatory, that can observe CCSNe (M = -17 mags) out to 20 Mpc to ~0.1% polarimetric precision. IR spectropolarimetry is less affected than optical by dust scattering in the circumstellar and interstellar media, thereby providing a more unbiased probe of the intrinsic geometry of the SN ejecta. SN 2018hna, a SN 1987A-like explosion, shows 2.0+-0.3% continuum polarization in the J band oriented at ~160 degree on-sky at 182 d after the explosion. Assuming prolate geometry like in SN 1987A, we infer an ejecta axis ratio of <0.48 with the axis of symmetry pointing at 70 degree position angle. The axis ratio is similar to that of SN 1987A suggesting that they may share intrinsic geometry and inclination angle. Our data do not rule out oblate ejecta. We also observe one other core-collapse and two thermonuclear SNe in the J band. SN 2020oi, a stripped-envelope Type Ic SN in Messier 100 has p = 0.37+-0.09% at peak light, indicative of either a 10% asymmetry or host interstellar polarization. The SNe Ia, 2019ein and 2020ue have p < 0.33% and < 1.08% near peak light, indicative of asymmetries of less than 10% and 20%, respectively.

We aim to demonstrate the scientific potential of the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) for the study of the Milky Way structure and evolution. We used astrometric positions, proper motions, parallaxes, and photometry from EDR3 to select different populations and components and to calculate the distances and velocities in the direction of the anticentre. We explore the disturbances of the current disc, the spatial and kinematical distributions of early accreted versus in-situ stars, the structures in the outer parts of the disc, and the orbits of open clusters Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1. We find that: i) the dynamics of the Galactic disc are very complex with vertical asymmetries, and new correlations, including a bimodality with disc stars with large angular momentum moving vertically upwards from below the plane, and disc stars with slightly lower angular momentum moving preferentially downwards; ii) we resolve the kinematic substructure (diagonal ridges) in the outer parts of the disc for the first time; iii) the red sequence that has been associated with the proto-Galactic disc that was present at the time of the merger with Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage is currently radially concentrated up to around 14 kpc, while the blue sequence that has been associated with debris of the satellite extends beyond that; iv) there are density structures in the outer disc, both above and below the plane, most probably related to Monoceros, the Anticentre Stream, and TriAnd, for which the Gaia data allow an exhaustive selection of candidate member stars and dynamical study; and v) the open clusters Berkeley~29 and Saurer~1, despite being located at large distances from the Galactic centre, are on nearly circular disc-like orbits. Young giant planets and brown dwarf companions emit near-infrared radiation that can be linearly polarized up to several percent. This polarization can reveal the presence of a circumsubstellar accretion disk, rotation-induced oblateness of the atmosphere, or an inhomogeneous distribution of atmospheric dust clouds. We measured the near-infrared linear polarization of 20 known directly imaged exoplanets and brown dwarf companions with the high-contrast imager SPHERE-IRDIS at the VLT. We reduced the data using the IRDAP pipeline to correct for the instrumental polarization and crosstalk with an absolute polarimetric accuracy <0.1% in the degree of polarization. We report the first detection of polarization originating from substellar companions, with a polarization of several tenths of a percent for DH Tau B and GSC 6214-210 B in H-band. By comparing the measured polarization with that of nearby stars, we find that the polarization is unlikely to be caused by interstellar dust. Because the companions have previously measured hydrogen emission lines and red colors, the polarization most likely originates from circumsubstellar disks. Through radiative transfer modeling, we constrain the position angles of the disks and find that the disks must have high inclinations. The presence of these disks as well as the misalignment of the disk of DH Tau B with the disk around its primary star suggest in situ formation of the companions. For the 18 other companions, we do not detect significant polarization and place subpercent upper limits on their degree of polarization. These non-detections may indicate the absence of circumsubstellar disks, a slow rotation rate of young companions, the upper atmospheres containing primarily submicron-sized dust grains, and/or limited cloud inhomogeneity. In order to construct regularizations of continuous linear functionals acting on Sobolev spaces such as $W_0^{1,q}(\Omega)$, where $1

Stars with masses between 1 and 8 solar masses (M$_\odot$) lose large amounts of material in the form of gas and dust in the late stages of stellar evolution, during their Asymptotic Giant Branch phase. Such stars supply up to 35% of the dust in the interstellar medium and thus contribute to the material out of which our solar system formed. In addition, the circumstellar envelopes of these stars are sites of complex, organic chemistry with over 80 molecules detected in them. We show that internal ultraviolet photons, either emitted by the star itself or from a close-in, orbiting companion, can significantly alter the chemistry that occurs in the envelopes particularly if the envelope is clumpy in nature. At least for the cases explored here, we find that the presence of a stellar companion, such as a white dwarf star, the high flux of UV photons destroys H$_2$O in the inner regions of carbon-rich AGB stars to levels below those observed and produces species such as C$^+$ deep in the envelope in contrast to the expectations of traditional descriptions of circumstellar chemistry., Comment: To be published in Chinese Journal of Chemical Physics

Because of bright starlight leakage in coronagraphic raw images, faint astrophysical objects such as exoplanets can only be detected using powerful point spread function (PSF) subtraction algorithms. However, these algorithms have strong effects on faint objects of interest, and often prevent precise spectroscopic analysis and scattering property measurements of circumstellar disks. For this reason, PSF-subtraction effects is currently the main limitations to the precise characterization of exoplanetary dust with scattered-light imaging. Forward-modeling techniques have long been developed for point source objects. However, forward-modeling with disks is complicated by the fact that the disk cannot be simplified using a simple point source convolved by the PSF as the astrophysical model; all hypothetical disk morphologies must be explored to understand the subtle and non-linear effects of the PSF subtraction algorithm on the shape and local geometry of these systems. Because of their complex geometries, the forward-modeling process has to be repeated tens or hundred of thousands of times on disks with slightly different physical properties. All of these geometries are then compared to the PSF-subtracted image of the data, within an MCMC or a Chi-square wrapper. In this paper, we present here DiskFM, a new open-source algorithm included in the PSF subtraction algorithms package pyKLIP. This code allows to produce fast forward-modeling for a variety of observation strategies (ADI, SDI, ADI+SDI, RDI). pyKLIP has already been used for SPHERE/IRDIS and GPI data. It is readily available on all instruments supported by pyKLIP (SPHERE/IFS, SCExAO/CHARIS), and can be quickly adapted for other coronagraphic instruments., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures. Vortex Fiber Nulling (VFN) is an interferometric method for suppressing starlight to detect and spectroscopically characterize exoplanets. It relies on a vortex phase mask and single-mode fiber to reject starlight while simultaneously coupling up to 20% of the planet light at separations of $\lesssim1\lambda/D$, thereby enabling spectroscopic characterization of a large population of RV and transit-detected planets, among others, that are inaccessible to conventional coronagraphs. VFN has been demonstrated in the lab at visible wavelengths and here we present the latest results of these experiments. This includes polychromatic nulls of $5\times10^{-4}$ in 10% bandwidth light centered around 790 nm. An upgraded testbed has been designed and is being built in the lab now; we also present a status update on that work here.
