Abstract

Having knowledge on the room acoustic properties, e.g., the location of acoustic reflectors, allows to better reproduce the sound field as intended. Current state-of-the-art methods for room boundary detection using microphone measurements typically focus on a two-dimensional setting, causing a model mismatch when employed in real-life scenarios. Detection of arbitrary reflectors in three dimensions encounters practical limitations, e.g., the need for a spherical array and the increased computational complexity. Moreover, loudspeakers may not have an omnidirectional directivity pattern, as usually assumed in the literature, making the detection of acoustic reflectors in some directions more challenging. In the proposed method, a LiDAR sensor is added to a loudspeaker to improve wall detection accuracy and robustness. This is done in two ways. First, the model mismatch introduced by horizontal reflectors can be resolved by detecting reflectors with the LiDAR sensor to enable elimination of their detrimental influence from the 2D problem in pre-processing. Second, a LiDAR-based method is proposed to compensate for the challenging directions where the directive loudspeaker emits little energy. 202. Mapping the direction of electron ionization to phase delay between VUV and IR laser pulses

Abstract

We theoretically demonstrate a one-to-one mapping between the direction of electron ionization and the phase delay between a linearly polarized VUV and a circular IR laser pulse. To achieve this, we use an ultrashort VUV pulse that defines the moment in time and space when an above threshold electron is released in the IR pulse. The electron can then be accelerated to high velocities escaping in a direction completely determined by the phase delay between the two pulses. The dipole matrix element to transition from an initial bound state of the N$_2$ molecule, considered in this work, to the continuum is obtained using quantum mechanical techniques that involve computing accurate continuum molecular states. Following release of the electron in the IR pulse, we evolve classical trajectories, neglecting the Coulomb potential and accounting for quantum interference, to compute the distribution of the direction and magnitude of the final electron momentum. The concept we theoretically develop can be implemented to produce nanoscale ring currents that generate large magnetic fields., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Formal methods for verification of programs are extended to testing of programs. Their combination is intended to lead to benefits in reliable program development, testing, and evolution. Our geometric theory of testing is intended to serve as the specification of a testing environment, included as the last stage of a toolchain that assists professional programmers, amateurs, and students of Computer Science. The testing environment includes an automated algorithm which locates errors in a test that has been run, and assists in correcting them. It does this by displaying, on a monitor screen, a stick diagram of causal chains in the execution of the program under test. The diagram can then be navigated backwards in the familiar style of a satnav following roads on a map. This will reveal selections of places at which the program should be modified to remove the error.

Abstract

Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD) has recently been devised as a method to solve the dynamics of integrable quantum many-body systems beyond the mean-field approximation. In its original form, a major limitation is the inability to predict equal-time correlations. Here we present a new method to treat thermal fluctuations of a 1D bosonic degenerate gas within the GHD framework. We show how the standard results using the thermodynmaic Bethe ansatz can be obtained through sampling of collective bosonic excitations, revealing the connection or duality between GHD and effective field theories such as the standard hydrodynamic equations. As an example, we study the damping of a coherently excited density wave and show how equal-time phase correlation functions can be extracted from the GHD evolution. Our results present a conceptually new way of treating fluctuations beyond the linearized regime of GHD., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

In this study, we mapped and quantified changes of proteoglycan (PG) content and biomechanical properties in articular cartilage in which either blunt or sharp grooves had been made, both close to the groove and more remote of it, and at the opposing joint surface (kissing site) in equine carpal joints. In nine adult Shetland ponies, standardized blunt and sharp grooves were surgically made in the radiocarpal and middle carpal joints of a randomly chosen front limb. The contralateral control limb was sham-operated. At 39 weeks after surgery, ponies were euthanized. In 10 regions of interest (ROIs) (six remote from the grooves and four directly around the grooves), PG content as a function of tissue-depth and distance-to-groove was estimated using digital densitometry. Biomechanical properties of the cartilage were evaluated in the six ROIs remote from the grooves. Compared to control joints, whole tissue depth PG loss was found in sites adjacent to sharp and, to a larger extent, blunt grooves. Also, superficial PG loss of the surgically untouched kissing cartilage layers was observed. Significant PG loss was observed up to 300 µm (sharp) and at 500 µm (blunt) from the groove into the surrounding tissue. Equilibrium modulus was lower in grooved cartilage than in controls. Grooves, in particular blunt grooves, gave rise to severe PG loss close to the grooved sites and to mild degeneration more remote from the grooves in both sharply and bluntly grooved cartilage and at the kissing sites, resulting in loss of mechanical strength over the 9-month period.

Abstract

Abstract Background The practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) is a health and social problem. Millions of girls and women have undergone FGM or will soon, and more information is needed to effectively reduce the practice. The aim of this research is to provide an overview of the FGM trendlines, the inequality of its prevalence, and the economic burden. The findings shed light on 30-year trends and the impact of the pandemic on planned efforts to reduce FGM which helps with public health interventions. Methods Temporal trend analysis, and graphical analysis were used to assess the change and inequality over the last 30 years. We included 27 countries in which FGM is prevalent. We calculated the extra economic burden of delayed interventions to reduce FGM like COVID-19. Results For the 27 countries analyzed for temporal trendlines, 13 countries showed no change over time while 14 had decreasing trends. Abstract

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract

While emission-selected galaxy surveys are biased towards the most luminous part of the galaxy population, absorption selection is a potentially unbiased galaxy selection technique with respect to luminosity. However, the physical properties of absorption-selected galaxies are not well characterised. Here we study the excitation conditions in the interstellar medium (ISM) in damped Ly$\alpha$ (DLA) absorption-selected galaxies. We present a study of the CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) in four high-metallicity absorption-selected galaxies with previously reported CO detections at intermediate ($z \sim 0.7$) and high ($z \sim 2$) redshifts. We find further evidence for a wide variety of ISM conditions in these galaxies. Two out of the four galaxies show CO SLEDs consistent with that of the Milky Way inner disk. Interestingly, one of these galaxies is at $z \sim 2$ and has a CO SLED below that of main-sequence galaxies at similar redshifts. The other two galaxies at $z>2$ show more excited ISM conditions, with one of them showing thermal excitation of the mid-$J$ (J$=3, 4$) levels, similar to that seen in two massive main-sequence galaxies at these redshifts. Abstract

The seminal Fast Johnson-Lindenstrauss (Fast JL) transform by Ailon and Chazelle (SICOMP'09) embeds a set of $n$ points in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space into optimal $k=O(\varepsilon^{-2} \ln n)$ dimensions, while preserving all pairwise distances to within a factor $(1 \pm \varepsilon)$. The Fast JL transform supports computing the embedding of a data point in $O(d \ln d +k \ln^2 n)$ time, where the $d \ln d$ term comes from multiplication with a $d \times d$ Hadamard matrix and the $k \ln^2 n$ term comes from multiplication with a sparse $k \times d$ matrix. Despite the Fast JL transform being more than a decade old, it is one of the fastest dimensionality reduction techniques for many tradeoffs between $\varepsilon, d$ and $n$. In this work, we give a surprising new analysis of the Fast JL transform, showing that the $k \ln^2 n$ term in the embedding time can be improved to $(k \ln^2 n)/\alpha$ for an $\alpha = \Omega(\min\{\varepsilon^{-1}\ln(1/\varepsilon), \ln n\})$. The improvement follows by using an even sparser matrix. We also complement our improved analysis with a lower bound showing that our new analysis is in fact tight.

Abstract

Hybrid classical quantum optimization methods have become an important tool for efficiently solving problems in the current generation of NISQ computers. These methods use an optimization algorithm executed in a classical computer, fed with values of the objective function obtained in a quantum processor. A proper choice of optimization algorithm is essential to achieve good performance. Here, we review the use of first-order, second-order, and quantum natural gradient stochastic optimization methods, which are defined in the field of real numbers, and propose new stochastic algorithms defined in the field of complex numbers. The performance of all methods is evaluated by means of their application to variational quantum eigensolver, quantum control of quantum states, and quantum state estimation. In general, complex number optimization algorithms perform best, with first-order complex algorithms consistently achieving the best performance, closely followed by complex quantum natural algorithms, which do not require expensive hyperparameters calibration. In particular, the scalar formulation of the complex quantum natural algorithm allows to achieve good performance with low classical computational cost.

Abstract

Context. Brown dwarfs are poorly understood transition objects between stars and planets, with several competing mechanisms having been proposed for their formation. Mass measurements are generally difficult for isolated objects but also for brown dwarfs orbiting low-mass stars, which are often too faint for spectroscopic follow-up. Aims. Microlensing provides an alternative tool for the discovery and investigation of such faint systems. Here we present the analysis of the microlensing event OGLE-2019-BLG-0033/MOA-2019-BLG-035, which is due to a binary system composed of a brown dwarf orbiting a red dwarf. Methods. Thanks to extensive ground observations and the availability of space observations from Spitzer, it has been possible to obtain accurate estimates of all microlensing parameters, including parallax, source radius and orbital motion of the binary lens. Results. After accurate modeling, we find that the lens is composed of a red dwarf with mass $M_1 = 0.149 \pm 0.010M_\odot$ and a brown dwarf with mass $M_2 = 0.0463 \pm 0.0031M_\odot$, at a projected separation of $a_\perp = 0.585$ au. The system has a peculiar velocity that is typical of old metal-poor populations in the thick disk. Percent precision in the mass measurement of brown dwarfs has been achieved only in a few microlensing events up to now, but will likely become common with the Roman space telescope., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We present our follow-up observations with GRANDMA of transient sources revealed by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). Over a period of six months, all ZTF triggers were examined in real time by a dedicated science module implemented in the Fink broker, which will be used for the data processing of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. In this article, we present three selection methods to identify kilonova candidates. Out of more than 35 million candidates, a hundred sources have passed our selection criteria. Six were then followed-up by GRANDMA (by both professional and amateur astronomers). The majority were finally classified either as asteroids or as supernovae events. We mobilized 37 telescopes, bringing together a large sample of images, taken under various conditions and quality. To complement the orphan kilonova candidates (those without associated gamma-ray bursts, which were all), we included three additional supernovae alerts to conduct further observations of during summer 2021. We demonstrate the importance of the amateur astronomer community that contributed images for scientific analyzes of new sources discovered in a magnitude range r'=17-19 mag. We based our rapid kilonova classification on the decay rate of the optical source that should exceed 0.3 mag/day. GRANDMA's follow-up determined the fading rate within 1.5+/-1.2 days post-discovery, without waiting for further observations from ZTF. No confirmed kilonovae were discovered during our observing campaign. Abstract

In this work, we study the space of complete embedded rotationally symmetric self-shrinking hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. First, using comparison geometry in the context of metric geometry, we derive explicit upper bounds for the entropy of all such self-shrinkers. Second, as an application we prove a smooth compactness theorem on the space of all such shrinkers. Abstract

We present a method to maintain the subjective perception of volume of audio signals and, at the same time, reduce their absolute peak value. We focus on achieving this without compromising the perceived audio quality. This is specially useful, for example, to maximize the perceived reproduction level of loudspeakers where simply amplifying the signal amplitude, and hence their peak value, is limited due to already constrained physical designs. In particular, we minimize the absolute peak value subject to a constraint based on auditory masking. This limits the perceptual difference between the original and the modified signals. Moreover, this constraint can be tuned and allows to control the resulting audio quality. We show results comparing loudness and audio quality as a function of peak reduction. These results suggest that our method presents the best trade-off between loudness and audio quality when compared against classical methods based on compression and clipping.

Abstract

We study Floquet engineering of the tunnel coupling between a pair of one-dimensional bosonic quasi-condensates in a tilted double-well potential. By modulating the energy difference between the two wells, we re-establish tunnel coupling and precisely control its amplitude and phase. This allows us to initiate coherence between two initially uncorrelated Bose gases and prepare different initial states in the emerging sine-Gordon Hamiltonian. Abstract

Single-shot Coherent Diffraction Imaging (CDI) is a powerful approach to characterize the structure and dynamics of isolated nanoscale objects such as single viruses, aerosols, nanocrystals or droplets. Using X-ray wavelengths, the diffraction images in CDI experiments usually cover only small scattering angles of few degrees. These small-angle patterns represent the magnitude of the Fourier transform of the two-dimensional projection of the sample's electron density, which can be reconstructed efficiently but lacks any depth information. In cases where the diffracted signal can be measured up to scattering angles exceeding 10 degrees, i.e. in the wide-angle regime, three-dimensional morphological information of the target is contained in a single-shot diffraction pattern. However, the extraction of the 3D structural information is no longer straightforward and defines the key challenge in wide-angle CDI. So far, the most convenient approach relies on iterative forward fitting of the scattering pattern using scattering simulations. Here we present the Scatman, an approximate and fast numerical tool for the simulation and iterative fitting of wide-angle scattering images of isolated samples. Furthermore, we publish and describe in detail our Open Source software implementation of the Scatman algorithm, PyScatman. The Scatman approach yields quantitative results for weakly scattering samples. PyScatman is capable of computing wide-angle scattering patterns in few milliseconds even on consumer-level computing hardware. The high computational efficiency of PyScatman enables effective data analysis based on model fitting, thus representing an important step towards a systematic application of 3D Coherent Diffraction Imaging from single wide-angle diffraction patterns in various scientific communities.
