Infection behavior of the rhabditid nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita to the grey garden slug Deroceras reticulatum was studied. The dauer (enduring or nonaging) juveniles of P. hermaphrodita invade D. reticulatum within 8-16 hr following external exposure, with the posterior mantle region containing the shell cavity serving as the main portal of entry. The dauer juveniles can recover, multiply, and produce new dauer juveniles in the slug and slug feces homogenates, but not in the soil extract. These results demonstrate that P. hermaphrodita is a facultative parasite of the slug and can complete its life cycle under nonparasitic conditions associated with the host. Although the juvenile and adult nematodes can kill the slug if injected into the shell cavity of the host, only the dauer juvenile can serve as an infective stage in the natural environment.

The first occurrence of the Achatina fulica, an intermediate host of Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the etiological agent of meningoencephalic angiostrongiliasis, is reported in Resende municipality, Brazil. In the five visited localities, snails were found living freely, and the larvae of this parasite was not seen in any of them. The finding of A. fulica in the area may be related to its commercialization as a food item and embodies the possibility of new focus.

Moraxella osloensis, a gram-negative bacterium, is associated with Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, a nematode parasite of slugs. This bacterium-feeding nematode has potential for the biological control of slugs, especially the grey garden slug, Deroceras reticulatum. Infective juveniles of P. hermaphrodita invade the shell cavity of the slug, develop into self-fertilizing hermaphrodites, and produce progeny, resulting in host death. However, the role of the associated bacterium in the pathogenicity of the nematode to the slug is unknown. We discovered that M. osloensis alone is pathogenic to D. reticulatum after injection into the shell cavity or hemocoel of the slug. The bacteria from 60-h cultures were more pathogenic than the bacteria from 40-h cultures, as indicated by the higher and more rapid mortality of the slugs injected with the former. Coinjection of penicillin and streptomycin with the 60-h bacterial culture reduced its pathogenicity to the slug. Further work suggested that the reduction and loss of pathogenicity of the aged infective juveniles of P. hermaphrodita to D. reticulatum result from the loss of M. osloensis from the aged nematodes. Also, axenic J1/J2 nematodes were nonpathogenic after injection into the shell cavity. Therefore, we conclude that the bacterium is the sole killing agent of D. reticulatum in the nematode-bacterium complex and that P. hermaphrodita acts only as a vector to transport the bacterium into the shell cavity of the slug. The identification of the toxic metabolites produced by M. osloensis is being pursued.

The paper provides the data on the invasion of unionids in the Zhitomir Polesye by parasitic worms Aspidogaster conchicola. The aspidogasters have been found in 9 species of molluscs (Unio--5, Colletopterum--1, Pseudonodonta--1, Batavusiana--2). An extensity and intensity of invasion of unionids by A. conchicola are unequal in different host species. The highest values of them were recorded for Unio conus borysthenicus (87% and 12 specimens), U. tumidus falcatulus (75%; 5 specimens), and Batavusiana nana (59.8%; 20 specimens). The invasion of molluscs by aspidogastrids from the stagnant waters are higher, than from the fluvial waters. The aspidogasters were found in the pericardium and kidneys of unionids. More often the parasites were met in the pericardium exclusively, rarely in the pericardium and kidneys simultaneously, and most rarely in the kidneys only. Within the pericardium, A. conchicola prefer the furthest sites of the contractile ventricle of the molluscan heart.

The prevalence, abundance, and developmental status of the digenetic trematode Proctoeces lintoni Siddiqui et Cable 1960 were compared in 3 species of keyhole limpets Fissurella. A total of 197 limpets was collected at Caleta Chome, south-central Chile. Fissurella picta and F. costata had the highest prevalence of infection, whereas F. picta showed the greatest abundance of parasites, which increased with host shell length. However, the frequency of P. lintoni specimens with eggs in the uterus was greatest in F. costata. These results suggest that an increased rate of development of a parasite in the intermediate host may shorten the residence time necessary for maturation in the final host. Thus, faster development of the parasite in F. costata suggests the possibility that the parasites transmitted through this host species have shorter maturation times in clingfishes than individuals transmitted via other limpet species.

In this study, the excretory-secretory products (ESP) of the daughter sporocysts of Vesicocoelium solenophagum (Trematoda) and plasma proteins of its host, Sinonovacula constricta were characterized by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and gelatin-substrate gel analyses, and the relationships between them were analysed using immunoblotting. Proteinase activity was detected in the ESP from daughter sporocysts of V. solenophagum. Some polypeptides of the ESP were found to be recognized by antiserum, raised against plasma from non-infected S. constricta, suggesting that the ESP may mimic host molecules (molecular mimicry). In contrast, neither the obvious proteinase activity nor the binding to the antisera was observed for the soluble proteins of daughter sporocyst, indicating that the ESP may play a important role in the parasite-host relationship. Although the plasma of infected S. constricta contained polypeptides that were similar to the plasma of non-infected bivalves, increased quantities of proteins at >170 kDa, 15 kDa and decreased quantities at 60 kDa were observed in the plasma of infected bivalves. Immunoblotting analysis revealed that the plasma of infected bivalves had a faint reaction with both anti-non-infected plasma antisera and anti-sporocyst antisera. These results indicated that the structure and quantity of some polypeptides from the plasma of infected bivalves had changed because of the infection with V. solenophagum. The polypeptides between the plasma of bivalves from a non-epidemic area and that from an epidemic area were similar, but the former had more polypeptides of 170-220 kDa and much greater proteinase activity than the latter, suggesting that the increased polypeptides of 170-220 kDa and the high proteinase activity in plasma may be favourable for protecting the host from being invaded by the parasites.

The behavioral response of Renicola thaidus cercariae (Renicolidae) to the light has been studied. The positive photo reaction was observed during the first hour of the cercariae free-living period (after shedding from the mollusc). Six hour old cercariae did not show any direct photo reaction. Temporal presence of the positive photo reaction promotes a wider spatial distribution of R. thaidus cercariae. This fact may increases a probability of successful finding and infection of the second intermediate host--bivalves such as the blue mussels. Besides, the more random distribution of infection in bivalve host populations is achieved. This circumstance increases a probability of infected bivalve to be eaten by the final hosts--seabirds.

According to the rule of academican E. N. Pavlovskiy, any organism of host is an environment of inhabit for a parasite (Pavlovskiy, 1934). It was analysed, which "ecological niche" or microbiotop (= microhabitat) is occupied by this or that species of symbiotic (parasitic) copepods in organisms of different groups invertebrate-hosts. The assumption lying in a basis of the given analysis means that each group of hosts may give to cohabitants only certain variants of microbiotopes independently on the general morphological structure and life mode of hosts. Five types of microbiotops offered by various groups of hosts for symbiotic copepods are designated (Ta[symbol: see text] 2). 1. The body surface of benthic invertebrates as a microbiotope is characterized by conditions being little different (concerning any kind of physical and chemical influences on copepods) from those in external environment on any other substrate. Apparently a trophical dependence plays a determining role in this case. There are certain directions in a development of adaptations, which are characteristic in some extent for all water ectoparasitic crustaceans and have one functional task--to help to an ectoparasite to keep itself on a surface of host body. In the first, the maxillules and maxillipeds significantly are developed, they get a form of large claws, with which the dopepods are strongly attached on a surface of host body and have an opportunity to move on it without a danger to be washed off. In the second, the form of the body undergoes a dorso-ventral expression and expansion of prosome, forms a cephalic shield allowing to the symbiont to press itself tightly to the host body surface and to avoid the loss of host (tab. 2). In occasions, some ectoparasites stimulate the formation of galls in skin tissues of the host, that also provides the parasite with constant conditions, without any threat to lose the host. However, this phenomenon has not a wide distribution and is observed in some groups of crustacean and echinoderm hosts. 2. The narrow tubular cavities in the organism of host either they are a part of external environment (as in channel system of spongia) or a part of internal environment of organism (as channels of blood system or thin parts of a digestive system) have always rigidly limited sizes and form. Characteristics of all parasites occupying this microbiotopes are the strong transformations. They are expressed by the reduction of legs or any other appendages (frequently in a significant degree), loss of segmentation to some extent and in eruciform (or vermiform) form of a body (tab. 2). This microbiotope is occupied by an ectoparasite in one case only (Spongicola uncifer from channel system of spongia) and by endoparasites in all other cases. 3. Large cavities connected with external environment. The formations of various genesis, such as mantle cavity of molluscs, gill cavity and marsupium of crustaceans, bursal cavity of ophiuroids and branchial cavity of ascidians, concern this type of microbiotopes. All of them are characterized by the relative difference from the external environment and rather large volume (in comparison to sizes of copepods), that provides the parasites with a sufficient protection from factors of the external environment and constant source of food such as elements of host body or food's particles brought by the water flow. Morphological changes in inhabitants of the microbiotope have two directions. They practically are absent in the overwhelming majority copepods, living in the mantle of cavity of the lamellibranches. On the other hand, the inhabitants of gill cavity and marsupium of crustaceans, bursal cavities of ophiuroids and branchial cavity of ascidians are characterized by the presence of strong transformations. Usually there are expressed in a loss of segmentation to some extent, reduction of appendages and swelling of body, as in species of the genus Sphaeronella (tab. 2). Changes are also observed in the life cycle: the tendency to reduce stages of development (development of nauplii stage, which takes place under the ovarial cover). In this case the copepodid stages hatch from the ova. 4. The internal cavity of organism of host. This type of microbiotopes in different groups of the hosts is represented in a various degree. We recognise it in a coelome of polychaetes, lacunar system of molluscs, mixocoel of crustaceans, coelome of echinoderms and cavity of body in ascidians. Two basic evolutionary directions are observed in copepods occupying this microbiotope. In the first case, the parasite is not exposed to transformations and keeps the initial plan of structure as in ancestral free-living forms. In the second case the parasites are exposed to strong transformations, they either live directly in cavity's liquid, or are surrounded by a cyst (as in Cucumaricolidae). 5. Microbiotope of the last type is most specific. The simultaneous existence in two environments--external environment (environment of the second order) and internal environment (environment of the first order) leads to the complete loss of ancestral type in a structure and level of organisation. At the same time both morphological and functional division of the parasite body into two parts produces a new formation--the ectosome and endosome. In this case we deals with the phenomenon of mesoparasitism.

Knowledge of the population dynamics of parasites and their hosts is essential to build veterinary and health programs. The example chosen is that of Fasciola hepatica, a food-borne trematode responsible for severe human and animal infections on the five continents. In this paper, we review the relationships between the liver fluke and its intermediate (mollusc) and definitive (vertebrate) hosts.

A survey of pathological conditions affecting cockle populations of the most economically important natural beds of Galician estuaries in NW Spain was performed. Samples of 30 adult cockles were collected from each of 34 natural beds in the spring of 1999 and processed by histological techniques. Disseminated neoplasia were seen in samples from most of the natural beds, in some cases with a high prevalence. The gregarine Nematopsis sp., larval trematode stages, and branchial extracellular large cysts enclosing bacteria-like microorganisms were the most prevalent parasites. Paravortex cardii, intracellular colonies of rickettsiae-like organisms in digestive and gill epithelium, Pseudoklossia sp. coccidians, Trichodina sp., and other ciliates were frequently seen in the samples. Copepods in gills and intestine and unidentified gregarines in intestine epithelia and surrounding connective tissue were less prevalent and were observed in samples of some natural beds. Large foci of heavy hemocytic infiltration were detected in a few sites only. Cysts of Steinhausia sp. and plasmodia and spores of a haplosporidian were seen in cockles from two localities. Inflammation was frequently observed in the samples. Some of the parasites and pathological conditions could be associated with mortality., (Copyright 2001 Academic Press.)

Acanthoparyphium tyosenense Yamaguti, 1939 (Digenea: Echinostomatidae), was originally reported as an avian intestinal parasite; here, its presence is reported in 10 humans in the Republic of Korea. The patients were 9 adults aged 35-66 yr (males and females) and a young girl aged 7 yr residing in 2 coastal villages in Puan-gun, Chollabuk-do. The worms were recovered after treatment with praziquantel and purgation with magnesium salts. A total of 158 specimens (1-107 specimens/individual) was collected, together with varying numbers of other intestinal flukes. The patients had eaten various kinds of brackish water mollusks caught in an estuary near their villages. Five bivalves and a gastropod species suspected as sources of human infection were collected and examined. Two bivalves (Mactra veneriformis and Solen grandis) and the gastropod (Neverita bicolor) were found to be infected with the metacercariae of A. tyosenense; adult flukes were confirmed after the experimental infection of chicks. The results show that A. tyosenense infects humans and that brackish water mollusks are the source of human infection.

Patterns of association of digenean families and their mollusc and vertebrate hosts are assessed by way of a new database containing information on over 1000 species of digeneans for life-cycles and over 5000 species from fishes. Analysis of the distribution of digenean families in molluscs suggests that the group was associated primitively with gastropods and that infection of polychaetes, bivalves and scaphopods are all the results of host-switching. For the vertebrates, infections of agnathans and chondrichthyans are apparently the result of host-switching from teleosts. For digenean families the ratio of orders of fishes infected to superfamilies of molluscs infected ranges from 0.5 (Mesometridae) to 16 (Bivesiculidae) and has a mean of 5.6. Individual patterns of host association of 13 digenean families and superfamilies are reviewed. Two, Bucephalidae and Sanguinicolidae, are exceptional in infecting a range of first intermediate hosts qualitatively as broad as their range of definitive hosts. No well-studied taxon shows narrower association with vertebrate than with mollusc clades. The range of definitive hosts of digeneans is characteristically defined by eco-physiological similarity rather than phylogenetic relationship. The range of associations of digenean families with mollusc taxa is generally much narrower. These data are considered in the light of ideas about the significance of different forms of host association. If Manter's Second Rule (the longer the association with a host group, the more pronounced the specificity exhibited by the parasite group) is invoked, then the data may suggest that the Digenea first parasitised molluscs before adopting vertebrate hosts. This interpretation is consistent with most previous ideas about the evolution of the Digenea but contrary to current interpretations based on the monophyly of the Neodermata. The basis of Manter's Second Rule is, however, considered too flimsy for this interpretation to be robust. Problems of the inference of the evolution of patterns of parasitism in the Neodermata are discussed and considered so intractable that the truth may be presently unknowable.

The zebra mussel Dreissena bugensis (Andrusov), a representative of mollusc fauna in the Dnieper-Bug estuary, have been found for the first time in the Rybinsk reservoir (the Volga reach, Shumorovka River). In pericardial and mantle cavities and inner organs of molluscs the following parsites have been found: Aspidogaster limacoides, Caspiobdella fadejevi, Helobdella stagnalis, eggs of the water mites of the genus Unionicola, and representatives of nonspecific saprotrophic fungi of the genus Acremonium. It is shown that composition of parasites and free-living organisms in D. bugensis is similar to that in D. polymorpha.

In the present study authors claim that the adult orthonectids can not move through host tissues by themselves. In various species of these enigmatic parasites there are at least two different mechanisms of emission of males and females from the host body. Intoshia linei, the orthonectid from Lineus ruber (Heteronemertini), and Intoshia variabili, the parasite of a flatworm Macrorhynchus crocea, realize the first way of emission. The plasmodium of these species forms tube-like outgrowths, which pierce the host tissues reaching the host body surface. The cytoplasm structure of these outgrowths differs from the cytoplasm of the central mass of plasmodium. Small mitochondria with electron dense matrix, lipid granules and vesicular bodies being common in the central part are absent in these outgrowths. Plasmodial outgrowths reach the host body surface and adult orthonectids move inside them using their cilia and stopping from time to time. The plasmodial outgrowths penetrate the ciliated epithelium, then males and females leave the host. Duration of emission may vary in different species from 6 to 13 days. The second mechanisms of emission is common for the orthonectid parasites of mollusks. Our observations of Rhopalura philinae from the gastropod Philine scabra lead to the conclusion that males and females leave their host practically simultaneously. When the plasmodium attains the terminal stage of its development most of the host entrails are already displaced by plasmodial mass. It causes breaks in host body walls and hence to emission of sexual individuals. During this process, which lasts about 24 hours, the mollusk dies. The same mechanism was observed in Rhopalura littoralis--parasite of the gastropod Onoba aculeus. Our investigations of emission ways reveal that the plasmodium of orthonectids has a potency of directing growth and can form certain structures. The process of forming the plasmodial outgrowths is coordinated in time and space. These outgrowths have certain directions inside the host body and the maturation of sexual individuals is clear related with the development of plasmodium outgrowth system. Our results suggest that forming of plasmodial outgrowths is an element of development of the united and highly integrated system. It is necessary to emphasize the capability of plasmodium to accomplish such morphogenetic transformations. This fact argues that plasmodium is a part of parasite organism and not host cells modified, like some experts supposed.

The age dynamics in oxygen consumption of the cercariae Himasthla elongata, Cryptocotyle lingua and Cercaria parvicaudata (Renicola sp.) was studied using modified Winkler's method. It was detected that under stable temperature and water salinity conditions the rate of oxygen uptake depends directly on cercariae size. The highest intensity of energetic metabolism was recorded in the first few hours of cercariae life when their movement activity was maximal. The following reduction of oxygen consumption passed unequally in three cercariae species studied. Large, long-lived H. elongata cercariae after relatively short period of active swimming turn to crawling on the bottom. The rate of oxygen uptake in such cercariae was two times less than in free-swimming ones and remained approximately invariable up to the cercariae death. The smaller sized, short-lived Renicola sp. cercariae swim actively in the water and during this time the level of their energetic metabolism remains more or less stable. It decreased drastically after cercariae sinking to the bottom, after that they perished very soon. Also relatively small C. lingua cercariae alternate the active and passive phases of swimming. Thanks to that they consume the energetic resources economically and prolong their longevity. During free-swimming period the rate of oxygen uptake of C. lingua cercariae remains more or less stable. As in the case of Renicola sp. cercariae, it decreased drastically after the cercariae sinking to the bottom. Apparently such cercariae lose their ability to infect the second intermediate host (fish).

This paper reports the first karyological study of trematode Ichthyocotylurus platycephalus (Creplin, 1825) Odening 1969. Chromosome number and morphology were studied in somatic cells of parthenites from intermediate host--mollusc Valvata piscinalis using an air drying technique and Giemsa staining. The karyotype consisted of 20 chromosomes comprising five pairs of subtelo-acrocentric (1st to 5th), two pairs of submeta-subtelocentric (6th-7th), one submetacentric (9th) and two pairs of metacentric chromosomes (8th, 10th). A supernumerary chromosome variation (presence/absence of B-chromosome) and occurrence of triploidy in one population of I. platycephalus are reported. In addition, the karyological analysis of Lithuanian population of I. variegatus was carried out. In the light of presented and previously obtained data comparative karyology of genus Ichthyocotylurus is discussed.

A total of 2,673 fresh specimens of cephalopod and fish representing 35 species were obtained from commercial local fisheries in Galician waters (NW Spain). They were examined for anisakid nematodes by digestion of the muscle and elution of the viscera and whole body cavity. All larval nematodes recovered were identified by light microscopy and multilocus electrophoresis as belonging to the species Anisakis simplex sensu stricto and A. pegreffii. Encysted larvae mostly occurred in the viscera but were also found in the flesh of squid and fish. Demographic values for larval nematodes are discussed in relation to host preferences and the ecological niche of both anisakid species at the sampling area. Primary recommendations are also expressed concerning the effects of current fishing and aquaculture practices on the Anisakis problem.

This laboratory study examined the survival of extreme environmental conditions by the White Sea periwinkle Littorina saxatilis. Molluscs from localities with high and low prevalence of Microphallus piriformes, which is a representative of the "pygmaeus" group of digeneans (Microphallidae), were compared. These parasites have not a stage of free-living cercariae in their life cycle. Metacercariae mature inside the sporocysts parasitizing the molluscan host. No negative influence of infection was found on resistance of molluscs to prolonged desiccation and extremes of air and water temperature. On the contrary, significant lower mortality of high infected snails was observed in some experiments. Exposure to fresh water was the only treatment that caused more intensive mortality of high infected snails in comparison with low infected one. The results of the experiments were discussed taking into consideration the available data on mechanisms of molluscan resistance and features in the relationships of "pygmaeus" group sporocysts with the organism of molluscan host. It was emphasized that the wide spread opinion regarding the only negative influence of trematode infection on the resistance of infected molluscs should be revised.

Angiostrongylus costaricensis is a nematode parasite of wild rodents in the Americas. Man may become infected accidentally and, sometimes, suffers a very severe abdominal disease. Ingestion of raw vegetables has been proven to be a risk factor for the acquisition of A. costaricensis and, therefore, prophylaxis should include food disinfection. The larvicidal effect of wine vinegar, saturated cooking salt (SS) and a 1.5% bleach solution (BW) were compared with a 1-h-incubation period, at room temperature. Larval viability was tested through inoculation in Swiss mice. Only one out of 560 larvae treated with BW (97.3% of the animals were uninfected) was recovered as an adult worm, while 90/336 and 29/512 larvae treated, respectively, with SS and WV were recovered as adult worms. This larvicidal effect of BW was seen also in incubation times as short as 15 min. In conclusion, the 1.5% bleach solution may be helpful for prophylaxis of human abdominal angiostrongyliasis through disinfection of raw vegetables and unpeeled fruits.

Thirteen freshwater animals consisting of 8 species of fish, 1 species of shrimps and crabs and 3 species of mollusks collected during September 2000 from 8 sites in 4 districts of Chiang Mai Province: Hang Dong, San Pa Tong, Chom Tong and Hot were investigated for helminthes. Two metacercariae were recovered from 4 species of fish with the prevalence of 80.32%; Metacercariae of Stellantchasmus falcatus were found in the body cavity and under the scales of Dermogenus pusillus (39.34%) and the metacercariae of Haplorchoides sp were found only under the scales of Mystacoleucus marginatus, Systomus orphoides and Rasbora paviei, (40.98%). Adult of Acanthocephala, Pallisentis sp also recovered from the intestine of Trichopsis vittatus (3.29%). Moreover, Pleurolophocercous cercaria and redia were found in mollusk (Lymnaea sp) with the prevalence of 45.65%.

In the Kandalaksha Bay (White Sea), the experiments have been carried out to study the life cycle of the larval trematodes of the genus Himasthla (Dietz, 1909) from the intertidal whelk Littorina saxatilis. It has been established that the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is the second intermediate host for this species. The seagull Larus canus is the final host. The species has been identified as Himasthla elongata.

A classical body of knowledge regarding molluscan immunobiology has developed over the years that indicates an important role for both soluble hemolymph proteins and hemocytes in internal defense. The incorporation of powerful molecular approaches into the toolkit of the molluscan immunobiologist holds considerable promise for allowing a more precise description of the molecules and processes involved. Recent discoveries indicate that the molluscan internal defense system has components that are simultaneously both tantalizingly similar to, and different from, molecules functioning in a defense context in other phyla. Study of molecular components of the internal defense systems of molluscs promises to be a rewarding and surprising field.

Specimens of the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis infected with the schistosome parasite Trichobilharzia ocellata show a strongly inhibited development of their reproductive tract. We hypothesised that the effects of the underdevelopment of targets are reflected at the level of the neuronal development of (i) the motor neurons innervating the male copulation organ and (ii) neuroendocrine cells regulating the gonad. We determined the state of neuronal development by measuring cell number, cell size and neuropeptide gene expression. Our results show that the neuronal development of both copulation controlling anterior lobe motor neurons of the right cerebral ganglion and neuroendocrine caudodorsal cells, which produce neuropeptides regulating ovulation, egg laying and accompanying behaviour, are affected in parasitised animals in which their respective target organs were not developed. The cell bodies were smaller and fewer cells were found to express neuropeptide genes compared to those in non-parasitised animals. These effects were not observed in the appropriate controls. Backfills and lesions of the penis nerve have shown that the inhibited development of central motor neurons in parasitised snails is target dependent; neighbouring neurons that have no connection with the male copulation organ are not affected. Our data suggest that this effect is established by target-derived neurotrophic factors that need this connection for being transported to the innervating motor neurons. We propose that the effect on the neuroendocrine caudodorsal cells is mediated by a humoral factor, since they have no known connection with their target. We have shown that the size and gene expression of motor neurons controlling copulation behaviour in the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis are related to the size of their target, the copulation organ, and depend on the connection with this target.

Xiphidiocercariae, aquatic larval stages of some trematodes are considered a potential instrument for biological control of mosquitoes. In this study we evaluated its natural occurrence in Campinas region and two places in Vale do Ribeira (Registro and Miracatu), São Paulo State. Snails were obtained from fresh water collections from September 1996 to February 1999. The species collected were Lymnaea columella, Physa marmorata, Biomphalaria tenagophila, Biomphalaria sp., Drepanotrema cimex, D. lucidum and Drepanotrema sp. Fasciola hepatica, xiphidiocercariae (Haematoloechidae) and echinostomatid cercariae were detected in the lymnaeids snails from Miracatu, SP. In the same locality were found planorbids snails parasitized by furcocercariae, echinostomatid cercariae and xiphidiocercariae. The xiphidiocercariae found in the planorbids were different from those obtained from lymnaeids. One Biomphalaria sp. infected with furcocercariae was found in Louveira, SP. In the ROSA place (Campinas, SP) an individual of Biomphalaria sp. and one of L. columella were found infected by the furcocercariae and echinostomatid cercariae, respectively. In the place UNI-I, in Campinas, one L. columella was infected by furcocercariae. Double infection in snails from Miracatu was also observed.

Seven species of fishes, 6 species of mollusks, 1 species of crab, and 1 species of shrimp were collected from 12 natural freshwater sites from 5 provinces: Lumpang, Phrae, Phayao, Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai during the Rainy season of 2000. Fishes, Channa striatus, Dermogenus pusillus, Oxyeleotris marmoratus, Trichogaster trichopterus and Trichopsis vittatus were examined for helminths and 34.69% (17/49) were infected. There were 2 genera of monogenean identified as follows: Dactylogyrus and Trianchoratus; 3 genera of metacercariae were as follows: Acanthostomum, Posthodiplostomum and Stellantchasmus. Furthermore, 1 genus of Acanthocephala was found from fishes to be Pallisentis sp. The prevalence of infection in mollusks was 6.20% (17/274); Pleurolophocercous and Furcocercous cercariae were observed only in one species of mollusks, Melanoides sp. A crab and a shrimp were negative.

The diversity of ways in which parasites reduce the fitness of their hosts has been documented during the past decades, and clearly indicates that parasites can often be considered as direct agents of selection. In natural systems, however, the outcome of a host-parasite interaction might be strongly determined by other ecological factors. Parasites can be detrimental to host fitness in one environment, whereas they can be beneficial to it in another. From an evolutionary perspective, this phenomenon is of considerable importance for understanding the dynamics of coevolution among geographically structured populations evolving under different ecological pressures. Here, Frédéric Thomas and colleagues review several ecological situations in which parasitized individuals enjoy a selective advantage over unparasitized conspecifics.

A morphofunctional aspect of pathogenesis in various mollusc--trematode combinations is very different. To evaluate the level of antagonism between the host and parasite, it is reasonable to use a summarized parameter of general physiological state of infected individuals. The somatic growth of the host could be used for that purpose. Analysis of original and reference data has shown, that the gastropod growth response to the trematode infection depends on the longevity of molluscs. The growth acceleration (gigantism) in infected individuals is common for snails with the intermediate longevity (3-4 yr), such as Hydrobia, Onobia and Bithynia (Prosobranchia: Rissoacea). As an exception, the gigantism is observed in the short-living species, which do not change the growth rate when they are parasitized: Biomphalaria, Bulinus, Helisoma and Lymnaea (Pulmonata: Basomathophora). Earlier, it was assumed that the single trend manifested in the infected long-living species (6-27 yr), such as Littorina (Prosobranchia: Littorinacea) and Cerithidea (Prosobranchia: Cerithiacea), in the decrease of the growth rate. The only case of the growth acceleration within the long-living molluscs was detected in the Littorina littorea from the White Sea infected with low pathogenic partenits of Cryptocotyle lingua (Heterophyidae). Based on the groups of snails with different longevity and being phylogenetically distant from each other, we can presume that the growth response to the infection correlates with the morphological peculiarities of hosts. The morphofunctional distinction in the system formed by trematodes and molluscs of different taxa are expressed in the parthenit localization in the host body and in the degree of digestive gland and/or gonad destriction. From the viewpoint of general physiological status of the host organism, the results of disfunctions in these organs are not similar. The destruction of digestive system ("energy power station" of organisms) is more fatal for infected individuals than a parasitic castration. Therefore, the localization of parasites in the mollusc gonad can be recognized as a parasitic adaptation to decrease the probability of a premature host's death and respectively to prevent the elimination of parasites. Phylogenetically distant gastropods with different life cycles use a diverse reproduction strategy, which implies a different proportion of gonad and digestive gland volume. Thus, snail species from different taxa are not similar in relation to the life space, which could be "granted" to the parasite without any risk to reduce a viability of the host. The space lack forces the parthenits parasitizing in the molluscs with the longer life span to occupy the digestive gland tissues, that increases their pathogenicity and decreases the host's growth rate.

The random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique was applied for the studies of genetic heterogeny between several natural populations of trematodes belonging to the Microphallida family. Initially, the metacercariae from the daughter sporocysts infestating Littorina saxatilis and Littorina littorea periwinkles were used. Comparison of the banding patterns obtained for the different metacercariae within one sporocyst gave an unpredicted results. For two of three studied species (M. pygmaeus and M. pseudopygmaeus), the considerable differences in RAPD patterning was detected. According to the classical point of view, the process of cercariae (metacercariae in case of the "pygmaeus" group of microphallides) formation does not include DNA recombination. Because of that, all metacercariae within one single sporocyst should be genetically identical. However, data obtained clearly shows that at least in some cases it is not so. We can hardly believe that such result could be a methodological artifact, for not single difference in a RAPD patterns was recorded between the metacercariae within sporocysts of M. piriformes. Moreover, even the 100 fold dilution of the total DNA used for PCR amplification does not change the banding patterns. Hence, our results can not be explained by slight fluctuations in the DNA concentrations between the samples. The most evident conclusion is that we came across yet strange, but real phenomenon--some degree of genetic difference within the progeny of each of the sporocysts--metacercariae. However, the detailed study is needed to understand and interpret these observations correctly. Amplification of the total DNA extracted from the whole sporocysts (containing metacercariae) never showed any differences in RAPD patterns between the parasites been derived from one infestated snail (local parasite hemipopulation). That allowed us to compare different parasite populations referring the RAPD pattern of one sporocyst from a snail to as a representative of one local hemipopulation. Analysis of the RAPD-loci frequencies showed a considerable genetic differences between the subpopulations of M. piriformes, infestating different paraxenic intermediate hosts--L. saxatilis and L. obtusata. This phenomenon was statistically significant for 2 localities of 3 studied. No heterogeny within populations was recorded for M. pygmaeus. Both M. piriformes and M. pygmaeus are characterized by the genetic differentiation in the microgeographic scale (within the Chupa bay of the White sea, the longest distance between the analyzed localities is 20 km). According to the frequencies of the RAPD-loci, parasites from the sheltered locality differ significantly from the parasites of other two localities exposed to the open sea. For both species the degree of genetic similarity between the populations correlates positively with the distance between the localities. We can suppose that the population structure of microphallids depended mainly upon the population structures of their intermediate hosts, definitive hosts and geographical structure of the areal. However, taking into consideration the low motility of snails, we believe that the distribution, migration and species composition of the definitive hosts play the key role in the genetic structuring of M. pygmaeus and M. piriformes hemipopulations. As an addition, the RAPD analysis of the parasite populations from the Barents Sea (East cost of Murman peninsula) and North Sea (Western cost of Sweden) revealed no significant genetic differences between the worms from those places and from the White Sea. However in case of this macrogeographic comparison, insufficient number of samples does not allow us to draw any final conclusions.

SCHISTOSOMA INTERCALATUM: Endemic in central Africa, S. intercalatum is the causal agent of this intestinal bilharziasis, which is similar to Mansoni's disease but with a characteristic lower localization (rectum and sigmoid). The principal clinical signs are digestive disorders: abdominal pain, diarrhea or dysentery, straining, tenesmus, rectal bleeding. The moderately enlarged liver is smooth and hard but not painful, especially observed in adolescents. ORIENTAL BILHARZIASIS: Schistosoma japonicum (found in lakes in China, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia) and Schistosoma mekongi (Melong valley) are the principal agents. Both lead to major liver fibrosis producing severe portal hypertension and growth retardation in children.

Epidemiological Data: Caused by Schistosoma mansoni, intestinal bilharziasis is endemic in west central Africa, the Arabic peninsula, the Caribbean Islands and the Atlantic cost of South America. Young adults emit large quantities of eggs in stools. CLINICALLY: The adult stage of Schistosoma mansoni lives in the mesenteric veins draining the colon. Its eggs are deposited in the submucosal veinules then pass into the intestinal lumen. Patients eliminating eggs massively experience abdominal pain and diarrhea with stools containing blood and mucus. Hepatomegalia develops, often with splenomegalia. Signs of portal hypertension, collateral circulation and ascitis are observed in highly endemic areas. Other less typical signs of digestive disorders such as anorexia, vomiting, or nausea, have also been reported.

Different parasite species sharing the same intermediate host species may have similar or conflicting interests, depending on whether they are at the same stage in their life-cycle or whether they share the same definitive host. In the New Zealand cockle, Austrovenus stutchburyi, metacercariae of the digenean Meiogymnophallus sp. are positively associated with metacercariae of Curtuteria australis. This relationship is found in different cockle samples, and is independent of cockle shell size, which suggests that it is not merely the product of metacercariae accumulation over time. Both digenean species have the same definitive host, oystercatchers. Metacercariae of C. australis manipulate the phenotype of cockles, impairing the cockle's ability to burrow in the sediments. This makes the host more susceptible to oystercatcher predation. Thus Meiogymnophallus sp. can benefit by associating with C. australis and may hitch a ride with the manipulator parasite. This is supported by the finding that cockles impaired by C. australis and lying at the sediment surface harbour greater numbers of Meiogymnophallus than buried cockles. A third digenean species, whose sporocysts are found in cockles and which is not transmitted by predation, occurred only in surface cockles. Finally, a parasitic copepod with a direct life-cycle was found evenly distributed among buried and surface cockles, independently of their metacercarial loads. These results show that different parasite species do not use cockles in a random fashion, and that not all patterns of host use are consistent with shared or conflicting interests among parasites.

The fellodistomid Proctoeces lintoni is a common parasite of the gonads of key-hole limpets Fissurella spp. (Archaeogastropoda). It has also been found in the mantle of Octopus vulgaris and as an intestinal parasite of haemulid and gobiesocid fishes. Fissurella crassa, a host for progenetic P. lintoni, can be found from Huarmey, Peni (10 degrees S) to Chiloé, Chile (42 degrees S). Proctoeces lintoni has been found parasitizing fishes and molluscs from Callao, Peni (12 degrees S) to Valdivia, Chile (39 degrees S). Progenesis is thought to be a latitude-dependent phenomenon, and high progenesis is expected at higher latitude. In the present article, the association between latitude and progenesis was examined over a latitudinal gradient of about 3,000 km. Data suggest that progenesis of P. lintoni infecting F. crassa was not associated with latitude. Low levels of progenesis found in the Peruvian population could be a consequence of parasite-induced mortality rather than of low latitude, as would be predicted by the latitude dependence hypothesis.

We investigated the emergence of third-stage larvae (L3) of Umingmakstrongylus pallikuukensis from the slugs Deroceras laeve, Deroceras reticulatum, and the snail Catinella sp. in the laboratory and from D. laeve on the tundra. Third-stage larvae emerged from 8 of 8 D. laeve and 8 of 8 D. reticulatum housed at 20 C in darkness and from 9 of 10 D. laeve and 5 of 5 Catinella sp. housed at 21 C with 10-12 hr of light/day. Larvae emerged from D. laeve and D. reticulatum over a wide range of infection intensities (2-179 and 20-65, respectively), and the patterns of emergence were independent of intensity. The majority of the L3 emerged from most of the Deroceras spp. by 58 or 60 days postinfection (PI). Lower rates of emergence were observed from Catinella sp. Larvae emerged from D. laeve on the tundra by 10 wk PI and were recovered from the vegetation in some experimental enclosures the following year. Third-stage larvae survived in tap and distilled water at 0-4 C for 13 mo. Emergence of L3 of U. pallikuukensis from the intermediate host may increase the temporal and spatial availability of L3 and enhance their survival and transmission.

The experimental study of life cycles of the trematodes Nenimandijea kashmirensis Kaw, 1950 and Pleurogenoides medians Olsson, 1876 was carried out. It was found out, that their life cycles include: the first intermediate host--the mollusc Boreoelona contortrix ussuriensis, the second intermediate host--dragonfly larvae of the genus Cordulia, and the final host--the frogs Rana nigrimaculata and R. semiplicata. Based on obtained data it is suggested, that Pleurogenoides japonicus (Yamaguti) should not be considered as a separate species.

Cercaria cerastodermae I, a digenean parasite of Cerastoderma edule, was recorded for the first time in the Atlantic Ocean off the Iberian peninsula. Sporocysts were present in the hemolymph of the digestive gland, gonad, gills, and foot of the mollusc. Most of the cercariae present within sporocysts were encysted as metacercariae. The corresponding adult stages were obtained after experimental infection of several Diplodus sargus artificially reared in fish farms and that had previously been protected against natural infections. Numerous adult specimens of Monorchis parvus were collected in Diplodus annularis along the French Mediterranean coast. Comparison of wild and experimental adults allowed the adult stage of Cercaria cerastodermae I to be identified as M. parvus. Another monorchid, Monorchis monorchis, a parasite of Spondyliosoma cantharus, was found in the same Mediterranean area and compared with M. parvus. Additionally, ITS1 nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences of C. cerastodermae I and of the adults collected in naturally infected D. annularis and S. cantharus were obtained. Sequence data indicate that C. cerastodermae I corresponds to the adult of M. parvus found in D. annularis and is clearly distinct from M. monorchis found in S. cantharus.

Trematode infection was studied in sympatric populations of the periwinkles Littorina saxatilis and L. obtusata in 2 regions of Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea to assess host-parasite interactions at the population level. Twenty-seven spatially separated populations were each surveyed in 1984-1994; 2 heavily infected populations were investigated annually over a 16 yr period. Ten trematode species were found in the periwinkle populations. The closest association in spatial distribution and temporal dynamics was observed between 3 ecologically and morphologically similar trematodes of the 'pygmaeus' group: Microphallus piriformes, M. pygmaeus and M. pseudopygmaeus. For these 3 species, the prevalences were closely associated in the 2 host species when spatially separated sites from the 2 studied regions were considered, while in the 2 populations studied over the 16 yr period, a correlation was only observed between the infection levels of L. saxatilis and L. obtusata by either M. piriformes and immature microphallids. Likewise, within each host species, significant correlations were revealed between the prevalence of the different microphallids of the 'pygmaeus' groups. However, they were fewer and weaker when the long-term dynamics of infection in the 2 heavily infected populations were considered. Most other trematodes did not show significant association in prevalence either within or between the 2 host species on spatial and temporal scales.

Infective Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts were detected in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and cockles (Cerastoderma edule) from a shellfish-producing region (Gallaecia, northwest Spain, bounded by the Atlantic Ocean) that accounts for the majority of European shellfish production. Shellfish were collected from bay sites with different degrees of organic pollution. Shellfish harboring C. parvum oocysts were recovered only from areas located near the mouths of rivers with a high density of grazing ruminants on their banks. An approximation of the parasite load of shellfish collected in positive sites indicated that each shellfish transported more than 10(3) oocysts. Recovered oocysts were infectious for neonatal mice, and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis demonstrated a profile similar to that described for genotype C or 2 of the parasite. These results demonstrate that mussels and cockles could act as a reservoir of C. parvum infection for humans. Moreover, estuarine shellfish could be used as an indicator of river water contamination.

Due to their widespread distribution and virulence, protozoan species of the genus Perkinsus are especially worrisome parasites for shellfish farmers. In the present paper, we investigate the organization and the structural features of the nuclear ribosomal genes of Perkinsus atlanticus as well as the use of DNA sequence information from this region for phylogenetic analyses. This information has been useful, further, for the development of a diagnostic test based on the amplification by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. We have isolated a high-copy DNA sequence in this species, and, after its characterization, we have determined that it corresponds to the ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes 28S-5S-18S and the intergenic spacers. By comparing the complete sequence of the 5S rRNA gene and a partial sequence of the 18S rRNA gene of P. atlanticus with the sequences of those genes in other Alveolates, we have found additional support for the hypothesis that Perkinsus is more closely related to species of Dinoflagellata than to species of Apicomplexa. The intergenic spacer sequence between the 5S and the 18S rRNA genes was used to design a pair of primers to be used as a PCR-based diagnostic test.

Pteriid oysters (Pinctada maxima, Pinctada margaritifera, Pinctada albina, Pteria penguin), rock oysters (Saccostrea glomerata, Saccostrea cuccullata, Saccostrea echinata) and representatives of other taxa (Malleidae, Isognomonidae, Pinnidae, Mytilidae, Spondylidae, Arcidae) from the wild, and 4670 hatchery-reared P. maxima, from northern and Western Australia, were examined for parasites and diseases. Rickettsiales-like inclusions and metacestodes of Tylocephalum occurred in most species. Intranuclear virus-like inclusions occurred in 1/415 wild P. maxima, 1/1254 S. cuccullata, 3/58 Isognomon isognomum, 1/80 Pinna bicolor and 1/45 Pinna deltodes. Perkinsus was histologically observed in 1/4670 P. maxima spat, 2/469 P. albina, 1/933 S. glomerata, 16/20 Malleus meridianus, 12/58 I. isognomum, 1/45 P. deltodes, 5/12 Spondylus sp., 1/16 Septifer bilocularis and 3/6 Barbatia helblingii. One of 1254 S. cuccullata was heavily systematically infected with Perkinsus merozoites, meronts and schizonts, and was patently diseased. Other potentially serious pathogens included Haplosporidium sp. in 6/4670 P. maxima spat, Marteilia sydneyi from 1/933 S. glomerata, and Marteilia sp. (probably M. lengehi) (1/1254) and Haplosporidium sp. (125/1254) from S. cuccullata. The latter were associated with epizootics on offshore islands, with heaviest prevalence (45%) in oysters with empty gonad follicles. Marteilioides sp. infected the oocytes of 9/10 female S. echinata from Darwin Harbour. Details of geographical distribution and pathology are given, and the health of the bivalves examined is discussed.

The molluscicidal activity of saponins isolated from the plant Anagallis arvensis (Primulaceae) was studied against schistosome intermediate hosts, Biomphalaria glabrata and Oncomelania quadrasi. @Strong molluscicidal activity was found in two compounds called desglucoanagalloside B and anagalloside B. Their structures were identified on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic analyses and their activities are comparable to that of the synthetic molluscicide, niclosamide.

The life cycle of the trematode Pneumonoeces nanchangensis major includes three hosts: primary intermediate host (molluscs Helicorbis sujfunensis, Polypylis semiglobosa), secondary intermediate host (larvae of the dragonfly genus Lestes), and final host (frogs Rana nigrimaculata, R. semiplicata). Descriptions and measurements of cercariae and metacercariae are proposed.

During surveys of the trichodinid parasites in mariculture beds off the coast of Shandong Province, China, four species of the genus Trichodina from the gills of marine molluscs were investigated and morphologically studied. Of these, three are described as new: T. ruditapicis n. sp. from Ruditapes philippinarum (Veneridae), T. scapharcae n. sp. from Scapharca subcrenata (Arcidae) and T. mactrae n. sp. from Mactra veneriformis (Mactridae). One little-known species, T. macomarum Raabe & Raabe, 1959, is redescribed from M. veneriformis. Taxonomic and morphometric data for these trichodinids based on wet silver nitrate and protargol-impregnated specimens are presented. For each of the new species, comparisons with closely related species are provided.

In the light of recent studies (NESEMANN and CSANYI 1995) on the genus Batracobdella (VIRGUIER 1879) Batracobdella paludosa (CARENA 1824)--a component of the Polish fauna--is actually Batracobdelloides moogi (NESEMANN and CSANYI 1995).

The objective of this note is to report the occurrence of the Biomphalaria straminea in the county of Cachoeira Dourada in the south of Goiás, and with that enhance the knowledge about its geographical distribution in the state. More than identify the species, the collection of thirty samples helped study and verify the presence of cercariae, especially because they were found in a setting which offers proper conditions to the development of a focal transmission site of schistosomiasis.
