This structure reduces the adhesion of oil on solid surfaces, promotes dispersion, and may accelerate degradation processes. The effects of the addition of fine sediments (clay+silt) on the formation of OSA, their impact on the dispersion and degradation of the oil, and their potential use in recovering reflective sandy beaches were evaluated in a mesoscale simulation model. Two simulations were performed (21 days), in the absence and presence of fine sediments, with four units in each simulation using oil from the Recôncavo Basin. The results showed that the use of fine sediment increased the dispersion of the oil in the water column up to four times in relation to the sandy sediment. There was no evidence of the transport of hydrocarbons in bottom sediments associated with fine sediments that would have accelerated the dispersion and degradation rates of the oil. Most of the OSA that formed in this process remained in the water column, where the degradation processes were more effective. Over the 21 days of simulation, we observed a 40 % reduction on average of the levels of saturated hydrocarbons staining the surface oil. Environmental Science and Pollution Research International

Whether in petroleum geochemistry or environmental impact studies, knowledge of mechanisms, residence times and chemical intermediates is essential to describe the scientific and technical bases of oil deterioration. This report attempts to review the concepts of oil weathering and its biomarkers specifically, in order to inform studies related to the impact of spills in marine environments.

A disfunção endotelial, o estresse oxidativo e o dano ao DNA é uma condição presente durante o desenvolvimento e manutenção da hipertensão renovascular induzida pela estenose da arterial renal no modelo 2R1C de Goldblatt. Estudos tem demonstrado que o sildenafil, inibidor da fosfodiesterase-5, aumenta a oferta do monofosfato cíclico de guanosina (GMPc) principal segundo mensageiro do óxido nítrico (NO), sendo capaz de melhorar a função endotelial, diminuir o estresse oxidativo e o dano ao DNA. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos do tratamento com sildenafil sobre a função vascular, o estresse oxidativo e a genotoxicidade em células de rim estenótico de camundongos hipertensos. Foram utilizados camundongos machos C57BL/6, com aproximadamente 23 gramas, os animais foram separados em 3 grupos: Sham, 2R1C e 2R1C tratados com sildenafil (40mg/kg/dia). Os tratamentos foram iniciados 14 dias após a indução da hipertensão. Após 28 dias foram realizadas as medidas hemodinâmicas e em seguida os animais foram anestesiados. O leito vascular mesentérico (LMV) foi canulado e isolado para avalição da função vascular por meio da construção de curvas dose-resposta à Acetilcolina (ACh) ou Nitroprussiato de sódio (NPS), após pré contração com norepinefrina. Os rins foram retirados e alguns foram armazenados em nitrogênio líquido para dosagem de angiotensina II (Ang II). Outros tiveram as células isoladas através de ação enzimática para a realização do ensaio do cometa para analisar a genotoxicidade, e análise do estresse oxidativo e produção de NO pela citometria de fluxo. As respostas vasodilatadoras estão expressas como percentual de relaxamento em relação à pré-contração. A resposta máxima (Rmáx) e o logaritmo negativo da concentração de droga que provocou metade da resposta máxima (pEC50) foram calculados. Resultados de bloqueio farmacológicos foram expressos como a diferença na área abaixo da curva (dAUC). Os resultados estão expressos como média ± EPM. As comparações estatísticas foram feitas por ANOVA, seguida do post hoc de Bonferroni. *p

Two models of remediation (intrinsic bioremediation and phytoremediation) were tested. The metals (Al, Fe, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn and Ni) were determined employing Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FAAS). The total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) were analyzed using Gas Cromatograph with Flame Iron Detector (GC-FID). The physical–chemical parameters were monitored for a 90-day period at the pilot scale. The results showed that both techniques were effective at degrading the organic compounds in oil, with phytoremediation (Rizophora mangle) being the most efficient (87% removal). It was also observed that the biodegradation model of intrinsic bioremediation did not have a direct correlation with the concentrations of metals; however, a positive correlation with some metals (Cu, Zn, Cr, Ni) for the model with phytoremediation was verified with the removal of hydrocarbons, showing efficiency at phytoextraction and phytostimulation. The results suggest that red mangroves, through their rhizosphere mechanisms are a promising plant that can be used for the removal of petroleum hydrocarbons in the presence of metals in mangrove sediments.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar se a imunoglobulina endovenosa reduz a mortalidade e o tempo de internação no tratamento da sepse neonatal. FONTES DOS DADOS: A base de dados utilizada foi a MEDLINE. Os descritores, procurados por meio da ferramenta Medical Subject Headings, foram combinados na seguinte estratégia de busca: [(sepsis OR shock, septic OR infection) AND immunoglobulins, intravenous] AND infant, newborn. Apenas ensaios clínicos randomizados de boa qualidade e que avaliaram o efeito da imunoglobulina endovenosa adjuvante no tratamento da sepse neonatal foram selecionados. SÍNTESE DOS DADOS: Foram selecionados sete estudos para análise. Todos os estudos avaliaram a taxa de mortalidade, totalizando 3.756 pacientes. O efeito global desse desfecho revela que não há diferenças significativas entre os grupos avaliados. Apenas cinco estudos avaliaram o tempo médio de internação, contabilizando 3.672 pacientes. Embora o resultado final apresente uma redução estatisticamente significativa de 1,24 dias no tempo de internação no grupo da imunoglobulina endovenosa, essa diferença é clinicamente desprezível, e o alto custo não justifica o seu uso rotineiro na prática médica. Esses dados contradizem a revisão de Ohlsson et al., atualizada em 2010, que demonstrou diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos, tanto no desfecho de mortalidade quanto no tempo médio de internação. CONCLUSÕES: Este estudo conclui que não há diferença significativa na taxa de mortalidade no uso adjuvante da imunoglobulina endovenosa no tratamento da sepse neonatal e que a diferença no tempo de internação é clinicamente desprezível. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether intravenous immunoglobulin reduces mortality and length of hospital stay in the treatment of neonatal sepsis. SOURCES: The MEDLINE database was searched. The keywords were combined using the following search strategy: [(sepsis OR shock, septic OR infection) AND immunoglobulins, intravenous] AND infant, newborn. Only randomized clinical trials (RCTs) showing good methodological quality and assessing the effect of adjuvant intravenous immunoglobulin in the treatment of neonatal sepsis were selected for inclusion and data analysis. SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: Seven RCTs were selected. All of them evaluated the mortality rate, including 3,756 patients. The global effect of this outcome showed no statistically significant difference between the groups. Only five studies evaluated the mean length of hospital stay, including 3,672 patients. Although there is a statistically significant reduction of 1.24 days in the length of hospital stay with the use of intravenous immunoglobulin, such difference is clinically irrelevant and its high cost does not warrant its routine use in medical practice. The data reported in the present review contradict the review by Ohlsson et al., which was updated in 2010 and showed significant benefit with the use of intravenous immunoglobulin on both outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that the use of adjuvant intravenous immunoglobulin shows no benefit regarding mortality, whereas the reduction in the length of hospital stay is irrelevant.

The objective of this work was to study the morphology and biometry of the infraorbital foramen (FIO), variations in its shape, size and number as well as to obtain measurements of its location. 60 dry skulls were analyzed. The test of Qui-quadrant and the T Test were used in measurements with a 5% significance. On the right side, the FIO was measured at a distance of 6.49(±1.68) mm from the lower, 39.65(±3) mm from the upper, 17.7(±2.97) mm from the medial and 20.46(±2.9) mm from the lateral margin of the orbit; its pear-shaped opening distance was 13.67(±2.17) mm. On the left side, the distance of the FIO to the lower margin of the orbit was 6.52(±1.82) mm; to the upper margin was 39.9(±2.62) mm and to the lateral and medial margin were 17.93(±2.58) mm and 21.12(±3) mm, respectively; its distance to the pear-shaped opening was 14.26(±1.83) mm. It was found predominately in an oval shape, in 39 (65%) of the skulls, on both sides. Accessory foramens were present in 11 samples on the right and in 15 samples on the left side. The FIO was most frequently found on the side of, or laterally to the sagittal plane that passes through the middle of the supraorbital foramen/ incisures, in 38 skulls (63.3%) on the right side and in 45 skulls (75%) on the left and middle to the zigomatic-maxillary suture, in 41 skulls (68.3%) on right and in 42 skulls (70%) on the left side, besides being most frequently found in a region between the first and second premolars, in 22 skulls (36.7%) on the right side and in 17 skulls (28.3%) on the left.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar la morfología y biometría del foramen infraorbitario (FIO), las variaciones en su forma, tamaño y número y además, determinó su ubicación.Se utilizaron 60 cráneos aplicándose las prueba de Chi-cuadrado y t student con una significancia del 5%.En el lado derecho, la distancia del FIO al margen inferior de la órbita fue de 6,49 (± 1,68) mm, 39,65 mm (± 3) al margen superior mm, 17,7 mm (± 2,97) al margen medial y 20,46 (± 2,9) y al margen lateral de la órbita, respectivamente. La distancia de apertura fue 13,67 (± 2,17) mm.En el lado izquierdo, la distancia del FIO al margen inferior de la órbita fue 6,52 (± 1,82) mm; al margen superior fue 39,9 (± 2,62) mm y a los márgenes lateral y medial fue 17,93 (± 2,58) mmy 21,12 (± 3) mm, respectivamente. La distancia a la abertura piriforme fue 14,26 (± 1,83) mm. Su forma era predominantemente ovalada, en 39 (65%) de los cráneos. Forámenes accesorios estaban presentes en 11 muestras en el lado derechoy en 15 muestras en el lado izquierdo.El FIO estaba localizado más frecuentemente lateral al plano sagital que pasa por el centro del foramen supraorbital. De estos casos, en 38 cráneos (63,3%) en el lado derecho y en 45 cráneos (75%) en el lado izquierdo.Los FIO estaban en el punto medio de la sutura cigomática-maxilar en 41 cráneos (68,3%) en el lado derecho y en 42 cráneos (70%) en el lado izquierdo. Los FIO estaban más frecuentemente localizados en relación al primer y segundo premolares, en 22 cráneos (36,7%) en el lado derecho y en 17 cráneos (28,3%) en el lado izquierdo.

Le DELFOS, Espace de Documentation et Mémoire Culturelle, créé en 2008 par la PUCRS, rassemble documents et objets des 39 fonds provenant des facultés de Lettres, Communication Sociale, Philosophie et Sciences Humaines – Histoire et Architecture. Cet Espace a pour objectif la préservation, l’étude et la divulgation de ces objets culturels. Le présent article relate une brève histoire des groupes de recherche qui se dédient à la sauvegarde de ces fonds qui aujourd’hui constituent le DELFOS. O DELFOS, Espaço de Documentação e Memória Cultural, criado em 2008 pela PUCRS, reúne documentos e peças dos 39 acervos originários das faculdades de Letras, Comunicação Social, Filosofia e Ciências Humanas – História e Arquitetura, visando à preservação, ao estudo e à divulgação desses objetos culturais. Este texto é um breve registro da história dos grupos de pesquisa que se dedicaram à criação dos acervos que hoje constituem o DELFOS.

A full two-level factorial design was performed to characterise the effects of the following reagent concentrations on the analytical procedure: sodium tetrahydroborate, potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) and nitric acid. This chemometric tool demonstrated that an increasing acid concentration increases hydrogen production, which dilutes the analyte in the quartz tube during analytical measurements. The experimental conditions established in the final procedure were determined using a Box–Behnken design. The method was used to determine the concentration of lead in water samples, with limits of detection and quantification of 0.13 and 0.40 mg L 1, respectively. Method precision, expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD), was 6.36% and was obtained with a 10.00 mg L-1 lead solution. The accuracy was confirmed by determining the lead concentration in the NIST standard reference material, SRM 1643d, for trace elements in natural water. This method was then used to determine the lead concentration in eighteen water samples collected in the São Paulo River (Bahia State, Brazil). The lead concentrations varied from 0.62 to 3.73 mg L-1. All samples were also analysed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). Statistical tests demonstrated that there was no difference between the results obtained by both procedures.
