Abstract

Mondini dysplasia is rare, but has an important association with recurrent bacterial meningitis. We herein describe the case of a 3-year-old girl with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss who presented with three independent episodes of bacterial meningitis within 8months. Temporal bone computed tomography indicated the characteristic features of Mondini dysplasia in the right inner ear. This was treated by surgical closure of the inner ear defect via oval window and additional vaccination was administered. Appropriate vaccination might prevent the recurrent bacterial meningitis associated with Mondini dysplasia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Thin-film fabrication of polyurea is hindered by poor solubility in most organic solvents. We fabricated spin-coated thin films of polyurea and investigated the structural and electrical properties of the films. The as-spun films had rough surfaces and relatively high crystallinity with 4.5 nm grains, while melt-quenched films were smooth and lower in crystallinity with 2.7 nm grains. Residual solvent remained in the films at temperatures above the boiling point of the solvent. The quenched polyurea films exhibited large current peaks originating from activated impurity charges from the residual solvent in the current density-electric field curves. The pyroelectric coefficient of the spin-coated polyurea films was estimated to be 4.13 μC/m 2 K. The polyurea films maintained pyroelectricity even after the application of an electric field, thereby exhibiting potential applicability in pyroelectric devices with annealing to remove the impurity charges. We have previously reported that tumor endothelial cells (TECs) are chromosomally abnormal. It is generally known that immortalized cells have chromosomal abnormalities. In this study, our objective was to compare chromosomal properties of an immortalized normal endothelial cell (NEC) line, MS1, and those of TECs, to assess the possible usefulness of MS1 cells as a surrogate for TECs, which have some experimental intractability as primary cultured endothelial cells.

Abstract

Abstract: The interfacial layer between a liquid crystal (LC) and a polymer alignment sublayer was investigated using the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) method. The time variations in the optical transmittance through the LC cells and the interfacial viscoelasticity were monitored simultaneously using the QCM to provide a comprehensive picture of the interfacial phenomena associated with the motion of LC molecules both in the bulk and in the interfacial layer. The response time of shift in the resonant resistance associated with the director orientation in the interfacial layer was about 90ms, while that in the LC bulk was about 5ms. This indicates that the reorientation of the LC molecules in the vicinity of the interface is much slower than in the bulk. The response time for the changes in thickness of the adsorbed layer, as estimated from the QCM results, was found to be about 1000ms. These results indicate that the electrorheological response, or the viscoelasticity, in the vicinity of the interface between the LC and the polymer should be taken into account for the development of LC devices. Abstract

Background: We retrospectively examined outcomes of salvage high-dose-rate interstitial brachytherapy (HDR-ISBT) for locally recurrent rectal cancer (LRRC). Methods: Nine patients with LRRC were treated with salvage HDR-ISBT. Their median age was 63 years. The median maximum diameter of LRRC was 40 mm (range 20-80 mm). Adenocarcinomas were histologically confirmed in all cases. The prescribed dose was 30 Gy/5 fractions/3 days to 50 Gy/10 fractions/6 days in the combined external-beam radiotherapy group (four patients) and 54 Gy/9 fractions/5 days to 60 Gy/10 fractions/6 days in the monotherapeutic group (five patients). Median follow-up time was 90 months (range 6-221 months). Results: Local control at final follow-up was achieved in five of nine patients. Of these five patients, one experienced a locally re-recurrent tumor in the vaginal wall 33 months after treatment and received re-HDR-ISBT as re-salvage treatment. The 8-year overall survival, local control, and progression-free survival rates were 56, 44, and 33 %, respectively. Based on the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events ver. 4.03, the following Grade 3 adverse events were observed in three patients (≥3 months): Grade 3 skin ulceration in one patient who showed tumor invasion of the skin and whose V100 was 400 cc; Grade 3 vaginal perforation in one patient whose tumor had invaded the vaginal wall; and Grade 3 vagina-to-bladder fistula in one patient whose tumor received re-irradiation. Late adverse events above Grade 3 were not observed. Conclusions: Long-term follow-up results revealed that salvage HDR-ISBT is a promising treatment for LRRC with tolerable toxicity. 243. Dose Reduction and Low-Contrast Detectability Using Iterative CBCT Reconstruction Algorithm for Radiotherapy

Abstract

Introduction:Several studies have reported the relation between the imaging dose and secondary cancer risk and have emphasized the need to minimize the additional imaging dose as low as reasonably achievable. The iterative cone-beam computed tomography (iCBCT) algorithm can improve the image quality by utilizing scatter correction and statistical reconstruction. We investigate the use of a novel iCBCT reconstruction algorithm to reduce the patient dose while maintaining low-contrast detectability and registration accuracy. Methods:Catphan and anthropomorphic phantoms were analyzed. All CBCT images were acquired with varying dose levels and reconstructed with a Feldkamp–Davis–Kress algorithm-based CBCT (FDK-CBCT) and iCBCT. The low-contrast detectability was subjectively assessed using a 9-point scale by 4 reviewers and objectively assessed using structure similarity index (SSIM). The soft tissue-based registration error was analyzed for each dose level and reconstruction technique. Results:The results of subjective low-contrast detectability found that the iCBCT acquired at two-thirds of a dose was superior to the FDK-CBCT acquired at a full dose (6.4 vs 5.4). Relative to FDK-CBCT acquired at full dose, SSIM was higher for iCBCT acquired at one-sixth dose in head and head and neck region while equivalent with iCBCT acquired at two-thirds dose in pelvis region. The soft tissue-based registration was 2.2 and 0.6 mm for FDK-CBCT and iCBCT, respectively. Conclusion:Use of iCBCT reconstruction algorithm can generally reduce the patient dose by approximately two-thirds compared to conventional reconstruction methods while maintaining low-contrast detectability and accuracy of registration.
