220. PISA, Policymaking and Political Pantomime: Education Policy Referencing between England and Hong Kong

Abstract

Since the mid-1980s, a number of East Asian societies have consistently performed well in international tests, and their education systems have emerged as models of "best practice", including Hong Kong, which has been extensively referenced by politicians and their advisers in England. In parallel, local dissatisfaction with the education system in Hong Kong has prompted major education reforms. This mismatch between the perceptions of the Hong Kong education system of the two policy communities is explored using documentary analysis and interviews with policymakers and other key stakeholders. We analyse the ways in which features of Hong Kong's education system are reconstructed and projected in policymaking in England and argue that the referencing to Hong Kong in England is akin to a form of political theatre, reminiscent of a pantomime, with stereotyped villains, heroes and fairy godmothers, narratives of good conquering evil, and comical set-pieces. We argue that these elements provide the means for both constructing and validating simple causal claims and their associated policy actions.

224. Modelling peatlands as a complex adaptive systems

A new conceptual approach to modelling peatlands, DigiBog, involves a Complex Adaptive Systems consideration of raised bogs. A new computer hydrological model is presented, tested, and its capabilities in simulating hydrological behaviour in a real bog demonstrated. The hydrological model, while effective as a stand-alone modelling tool, provides a conceptual and algorithmic structure for ecohydrological models presented later. Using DigiBog architecture to build a cellular model of peatland patterning dynamics, various rulesets were experimented with to assess their effectiveness in predicting patterns. Contrary to findings by previous authors, the ponding model did not predict patterns under steady hydrological conditions. None of the rulesets presented offered an improvement over the existing nutrient-scarcity model. Sixteen shallow peat cores from a Swedish raised bog were analysed to investigate the relationship between cumulative peat decomposition and hydraulic conductivity, a relationship previously neglected in models of peatland patterning and peat accumulation. A multivariate analysis showed depth to be a stronger control on hydraulic conductivity than cumulative decomposition, reflecting the role of compression in closing pore spaces. The data proved to be largely unsuitable for parameterising models of peatland dynamics, due mainly to problems in core selection. However, the work showed that hydraulic conductivity could be expressed quantitatively as a function of other physical variables such as depth and cumulative decomposition. DigiBog architecture was used to build a simple, vertical, ecohydrological model of long-term peat accumulation. As model complexity was increased under a self-organisation approach, model predictions of peat accumulation rates and surface wetness changed dramatically, revealing the importance of feedbacks between peatland hydrological behaviour and peat physical properties. This work may have important implications for palaeoclimatic reconstructions which assume peatland surface wetness to be a reliable climatic indicator. The expansion of the model to include horizontal space altered model behaviour in quantitative and qualitative terms.

225. Can Judgments of Threat Reflect an Approaching Person's Trait Aggression?

Abstract

When in a vulnerable situation (such as walking alone at night), an approaching person may be seen as 'threatening'. Here, we are interested in how well participants' judgments of threat reflected the trait aggression of approaching target people. We use two similar experiments to demonstrate and replicate the relationship between judgments of threat and target aggression. In both studies participants judged how threatening they found 22 approaching people (presented in videos). In Study One, participants judged the targets whilst sitting at a computer. In Study Two, participants were standing and were either oriented facing the videos, or oriented away from the videos so they had to look over their shoulder. This was to emulate a potentially threatening person approaching from behind. Across both studies, there was strong evidence that the average judgments of the threat posed by the approaching targets accurately reflected the targets' trait aggression. It was also found that there was noteworthy variability in individual participants' ability to detect aggression, with a few participants even having an inverse relationship between threat and the target's aggression. 226. The physical and psychological health effects of pet ownership among children in China:A systematic review

Abstract

Research to date in Western contexts has indicated various physical and psychological health effects of pet ownership among children, but less is known about the role pets play in the health of children in China. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the evidence on the effects of pet ownership on physical and psychological health among children in China. A literature search was performed in eight databases for studies that investigated the health and psychological effects of pet exposure on children (operationalized as birth to 20 years) in China, and a quality assessment and a narrative synthesis of results were conducted. Fifty-nine studies published between 2002 and 2021 were included in this review, of which 57 focused on children’s physical health issues including asthma and allergy symptoms, Toxoplasma gondii infection, animal induced injuries, low birth weight and hypertension, while only two studies focused on children’s psychological health. Overall, pet exposure was most often studied as a risk factor for respiratory health, injuries, and T. gondii infection among children in China but was also seen as a protective factor for cardiovascular health and for the association between environmental pollution and children’s respiratory function. In addition to physical health effects, two studies focused on psychological factors: post-traumatic stress following animal-induced injuries and benefits of reading following a canine-assisted activity. Findings underscore the need for further research examining the effects of pet ownership on children’s development and psychological health in China.

228. Carbon export from natural iron fertilisation in the Southern Ocean

Abstract

It has long been recognised that some oceanic regions have persistently low chlorophyll levels, even though inorganic nutrients are plentiful. Studies have shown that these high-nutrient, low-chlorophyll (HNLC) areas are depleted in iron, which is an essential micronutrient for phytoplankton growth. In HNLC regions biological production can be enhanced with artificial mesoscale iron fertilisation. However, the ability of artificially induced phytoplankton blooms to efficiently sequester carbon to mesopelagic depths is still an open question. SubAntarctic islands in the HNLC Southern Ocean are a natural source of iron and thus fuel the annual phytoplankton blooms observed in their proximity. One such bloom, tied to the Crozet Islands (52ºE, 46ºS), provided the opportunity to examine particulate organic carbon (POC) export during the austral summer of 2004/5. This work was imbedded into the multi-disciplinary CROZEX project thus providing a rich context for data interpretation. Based on satellite imagery, a high chlorophyll region (max = 4 µg l-1) north and downstream of the Crozet Islands was distinguished from a low chlorophyll region (typically 0.3 µg l-1) south and upstream of the islands. POC export estimates, obtained with the naturally occurring particle reactive radionuclide tracer, 234Th, were initially D15 mmol C m-2 d-1 in the high chlorophyll region, compared with D5 mmol C m-2 d-1 in the low chlorophyll region. After a moderately small increase in chlorophyll in the south (max = 0.7 µg l-1) the spatial variability in POC export was lost, resulting in equally high levels of POC export (ca. 20 mmol C m-2 d-1) throughout the study area. After comparing the daily rates of POC export with temporally integrated new production calculated from nitrate budgets, a different spatial pattern emerged. New production (NP) presented consistently higher values in the north, when compared to the south. Two hypotheses were formulated to explain this, 1) dissolved organic matter (DOM) and suspended particulate organic matter (sPOM) produced from NP was stored in the mixed layer with this effect relatively greater in the north, 2) the export event in the north was longer resulting in greater seasonal POC export. Investigation of the DOM pool revealed that DOM accounted for 46±7% of NP and was consistent across the whole study area. In contrast, sPOM accumulated at differential rates of 18±7% in the north and 0±7% in the south. This suggested that differential storage of sPOM was responsible for the lack of a latitudinal gradient in POC export after the relatively small increase in chlorophyll in the south. After investigating the second hypothesis, the daily rates of POC export were scaled to seasonal integrals using a silicon budget, which allowed the formulation of a seasonal carbon budget. This revealed that over the timescale of the study the magnitude of NP and POC export were not the same with this difference greatest within the northern high chlorophyll region. This was the result of relatively greater storage of sPOM in the north and had the effect of reducing the amount of easily exportable POC to mesopelagic depths. Thus both hypotheses contributed to better understanding carbon export in the Crozet region.

229. A Fabry Perot Fibre-optic hydrophone for the characterisation of ultrasound fields

Abstract

This thesis documents the development of a novel fibre optic hydrophone, for the characterisation of medical ultrasound transducers and the measurement of ultrasound induced temperature rises. The transduction mechanism of the hydrophone is based on the detection of acoustically and thermally induced changes in the optical thickness of a Fabry-Perot interferometer deposited at the tip of a single mode optical fibre. The interferometer comprises a layer of Parylene-C sandwiched between two thin gold mirrors. The design of the sensor was optimised using a numerical model of the interferometer transfer function. Through the use of vacuum deposition techniques, a fabrication procedure has been developed which enables batch production of the sensors. A self contained sensor interrogation system has also been developed. The system uses a rapidly tuneable laser developed originally for the telecoms industry to interrogate the sensor and make acoustic and thermal measurement, Control of the system is achieved via a PC using software written in Labview 8.0.

Abstract

Abstract Background Pythium ultimum is a ubiquitous oomycete plant pathogen responsible for a variety of diseases on a broad range of crop and ornamental species. Results The P. ultimum genome (42.8 Mb) encodes 15,290 genes and has extensive sequence similarity and synteny with related Phytophthora species, including the potato blight pathogen Phytophthora infestans. Whole transcriptome sequencing revealed expression of 86% of genes, with detectable differential expression of suites of genes under abiotic stress and in the presence of a host. The predicted proteome includes a large repertoire of proteins involved in plant pathogen interactions, although, surprisingly, the P. ultimum genome does not encode any classical RXLR effectors and relatively few Crinkler genes in comparison to related phytopathogenic oomycetes. A lower number of enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism were present compared to Phytophthora species, with the notable absence of cutinases, suggesting a significant difference in virulence mechanisms between P. ultimum and more host-specific oomycete species. Although we observed a high degree of orthology with Phytophthora genomes, there were novel features of the P. ultimum proteome, including an expansion of genes involved in proteolysis and genes unique to Pythium. We identified a small gene family of cadherins, proteins involved in cell adhesion, the first report of these in a genome outside the metazoans. Conclusions Access to the P. ultimum genome has revealed not only core pathogenic mechanisms within the oomycetes but also lineage-specific genes associated with the alternative virulence and lifestyles found within the pythiaceous lineages compared to the Peronosporaceae.

245. A study of a mutant form of receptor tyrosine kinase Tie-2 associated with venous malformations

Abstract

The receptor tyrosine kinase Tie-2 is expressed predominantly in endothelial cells and is involved in blood vessel formation and maintenance. A missense mutation resulting in an R849 to W substitution in the kinase domain of Tie-2 has been reported to co-segregate with an autosomal dominantly inherited form of venous malformation (VM). In this disorder focal masses arise comprising of numerous dilated vascular channels lined with endothelial cells but largely lacking mural cell support. The mechanism whereby R849W mutant Tie-2 results in VM is not known. The aim of this study was to determine the functional effects of this mutant form of Tie-2 in order to gain insight into the mechanism by which it results in VM. To do this, wild type and VM (R849W) mutant Tie-2 were subcloned into mammalian expression vector pCR3 and stably expressed in endothelial cells. the VM mutant form of Tie-2 exhibited elevated constitutive tyrosine phosphorylation compared with wild type receptor in endothelial cells. expression of VM mutant Tie-2 caused a dramatic increase in endothelial cell survival during serum starvation. Under basal conditions VM mutant Tie-2 was found to be associated with a number of tyrosine phosphorylated proteins including Shp-2 and the adapter protein Shc. Consistent with effects on cell survival, endothelial cells expressing VM mutant Tie-2 had constitutively activated Akt. These data suggest the mutant form of Tie-2 may act to prevent regression of mural cell poor vessels via ligand-independent Tie-2 activation of Akt and endothelial survival.

Abstract

For more than 60 years, humans have travelled into space. Until now, the majority of astronauts have been professional, government agency astronauts selected, in part, for their superlative physical fitness and the absence of disease. Commercial spaceflight is now becoming accessible to members of the public, many of whom would previously have been excluded owing to unsatisfactory fitness or the presence of cardiorespiratory diseases. While data exist on the effects of gravitational and acceleration (G) forces on human physiology, data on the effects of the aerospace environment in unselected members of the public, and particularly in those with clinically significant pathology, are limited. Although short in duration, these high acceleration forces can potentially either impair the experience or, more seriously, pose a risk to health in some individuals. Rather than expose individuals with existing pathology to G forces to collect data, computational modelling might be useful to predict the nature and severity of cardiovascular diseases that are of sufficient risk to restrict access, require modification, or suggest further investigation or training before flight. In this Review, we explore state-of-the-art, zero-dimensional, compartmentalized models of human cardiovascular pathophysiology that can be used to simulate the effects of acceleration forces, homeostatic regulation and ventilation–perfusion matching, using data generated by long-arm centrifuge facilities of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the European Space Agency to risk stratify individuals and help to improve safety in commercial suborbital spaceflight.
